How To Optimize Your Body’s Natural Detox System

After the indulgent festive season a lot of us are looking for ways to help our body detox! If you’re feeling like you overindulged or you’re looking for a way to jump back on to the healthy wagon, we’ve got your back!

Cut Down Processed Foods

At WH, we are all about finding ways to make a healthy lifestyle sustainable. We created a gentle 28-day programme that will see you gradually eliminating things from your diet that your body finds harder to process. This meal plan also introduces more nutrient-rich whole foods, which give your body the building blocks it needs to heal and repair.

We’re not talking a green juice diet.

Over the course of the programme, you’ll learn to cook nourishing meals that help your body function at its best. You’ll have more energy, feel lighter and have glowing skin. Check out our Go Detox programme, which includes a healthy meal plan.

Eating healthier will give you more energy and help you feel better in general. And adding more antioxidant-rich foods to your diet will help your body detox too!

This Is What Happens To Your Body On A Sugar Detox

Swap Booze For Buchu Tea

Going dry for January is one of them! (Read more about what Dry January is – and what the health experts have to say here.)

While drinking your two litres of water a day can certainly help keep you feeling energized, it also helps your body flush toxins. But sometimes we get a little bored of plain old H2O.

Here at WH, we’re obsessed with buchu tea! The Cape Kingdom range of Buchu Organic Detox teas (combined with natural flavours such a mint — good for weight loss; ginger — good for nausea; and cinnamon — good for fighting inflammation) has us making a beeline for the office kitchen. #MoreDrinkingLessSpilling

Hot summer days don’t always call for a hot cup of tea though. So try making your own iced tea by placing 4-6 teabags in 1 litre boiling water in a two-litre glass jug (or container). Steep for 15 minutes. Remove the tea bags and add loads of ice to the jug. Add in the juice of one orange and slices of additional lemon. Add some fresh mint for an extra bit of fresh flavouring.

Detox Through Sweat

Sweating has been used as therapy for as long as we know. Just think of all those saunas and Turkish baths. Sweating helps our bodies eliminate heavy metals and compounds such as BPA (hey, plastic bottles!).

In an interview, Dr Jeffrey Morrison of The Morrison Centre explains that “the primary detox organs are the liver and kidneys. Sometimes they’re not able to get rid of certain toxins because the load is too large.” He is a US-based functional medicine physician. “What doesn’t leave gets stored in the fat, so the body gets rid of it through a secondary system, which is sweat.” That’s even more motivation to exercise!

If you’re looking for a class that will make you sweat buckets and is accessible to all levels of fitness, try Bikram yoga aka Hot26!

It’s a series of 26 yoga postures performed slowly in a heated room over the course of 60 or 90 minutes.

Sleep Better = Detox Better

When we think of the word “detox”, our brains probably think of green juice before snoozing. The thing is, good-quality sleep is still one of the most underrated health fixes around. And it all comes down to you.

How does one support the other? Sleeping allows your brain to reorganize and recharge itself, as well as remove toxic waste byproducts that have accumulated throughout the day. Read more on The Neuroprotective Aspects of Sleep here.

Before you get into bed, try this basic yoga sequence to help you sleep better.
