    HH Sheikh Mansoor spearheads the 2020 Dubai Globe Soccer Awards

    Despite the global pandemic, under the guidance of the Chairman of Dubai Sports Council (DSC), His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, managed to bring well-known personalities and players from around the football world for an in-person conference which took place on December 27, at Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa with the theme – Football at the Top.
    On the night, Tommaso Bendoni, CEO of the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards shared his honour at being able to share their gratitude to those in the world of football amidst a difficult year.

    “We are honoured to have been able to show our appreciation to the players, clubs, coaches and agents who, during a difficult year for everyone, continued to work so that football did not stop and kept millions of fans around the world entertained,” he said.

    Notable awards give on the night included world-renowned football player Cristiano Ronaldo being crowned as Player of the Century 2001-2020 and with Polish talent Robert Lewandowski triumphing as Player of the Year 2020 and Bayern Munich as club received the Globe Soccer Award for Club of the Year 2020.
    Meanwhile, the Club of the Century 2001-2020, went to Real Madrid as the numbers for this Spanish club speak for themselves, not to mention their record of victories with many more talents being recognised.
    After accepting his award for Player of the Century 2001-2020, Cristiano Ronaldo said, “Year after year, Dubai gathers the best players, coaches and directors of world football in the same place for an entire week, showing how respected the Globe Soccer Awards has become.”

    Aimed to recognize, the best players, coaches and talent, the annual Dubai Globe Soccer Awards were established in 2010, Sheikh Mansoor shared his hopes to create “a better future for football” in the UAE and across the world.
    “We are following the path of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who insists we do not wait for the future, but make it, and the organisation of this Dubai International Sports Conference contributes towards the creation of a better future for football in the UAE, this region and the wider world,” His Highness said.

    Saudi Arabia has suspended flights for one more week

    With news regarding the spread of the latest variant of COVID-19 emerging last week, it has been confirmed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that it will continue the suspension of international flights for one more week.

    Due to the appearance of this new mutation, Saudi Arabia had immediately shut the land, air and seaports for one week, which has now been extended.
    While adhering to the precautionary measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has been informed the airports in the country to still transport non-Saudi passengers outside Saudi. However, the cabin crew for foreign airlines has been informed to not leave the plane on landing while avoiding any sort of physical contact with the ground and operation staff of the airport.

    As per instructions, all airlines must also coordinate with the Air Transport Department before applying for flights, while also avoiding the countries where the new strain has appeared.

    Abu Dhabi is set to break two world records on New Year’s Eve

    As the UAE gets ready to celebrate the end of 2020, a much-awaited day for many, this year’s fireworks show in Abu Dhabi is ready to break two Guinness World Records.
    The event is set to be hosted as a part of the Sheikh Zayed Festival. The will kick-off from 3pm onwards on December 31 as the night sky will later light up at Al Wathba for more than half an hour.

    Residents in the nearby vicinity will have the opportunity to witness the stunning fireworks in addition to the laser shows as the fireworks will span over a period of 35 minutes. This will be the longest-running fireworks display, hence why it’s set to break two world records.

    Those on the COVID-19 frontline will ‘go down in history’
    In April, His Highness declared in a cabinet meeting that those on the frontlines of the COVID-19 battle that they will “go down in history”.
    Sheikh Mohammed acknowledged how the nation was “racing against time to make our country ready for various circumstances”, but also highlighted and praised the efforts of those on the frontline of the COVID-19 battle.

    In May, to mark the 44th UAE Armed Forces’ Unification Day His Highness paid tribute to the protectors of the nation.

    Titled ‘What would have Zayed done today?’, the two-minute video showcased the UAE leaders chairing virtual meetings, visiting essential workers during these times and more. It also showcases the tireless work of those on the frontline amidst the battle against the coronavirus.
    In the narration, it’s stated if Zayed were around today, “He would have eased the pain by being caring, reassuring, supportive. He would have been the leader who, when the world is pausing, he’s already preparing for what’s next.”
    The Hope Probe launch
    Upon the successful launch of the UAE’s Hope Probe, Sheikh Mohammed shared his pride about the project the nation has spearheaded.

    “We proudly announce the successful launch of the Hope Probe,” he said. “The ground control station in Dubai has received the first signal from the probe after its solar panels were successfully deployed to charge its batteries.

    Praising the women of the nation
    To mark the fifth annual Emirati Women’s Day on August 28, 2020, His Highness honoured women across the UAE.
    Posting a video to his 10.3 million Twitter followers which paid tribute to Emirati women, he expressed his pride towards every female from the UAE.

    Condolences for the Beirut explosion
    Following the devastating explosion in Beirut, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum shared a heartfelt message of support with the people of Lebanon.

    His Highness also ensured as much aid as possible was sent to Lebanon from the UAE to help those in need.
    Message to mark Saudi National Day
    In celebration of this year’s Saudi National Day and to solidify the bond between the two countries, His Highness sent a heartfelt message to the “glorious” Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

    In a video which Sheikh Mohammed shared, the continued great relationship between the Kingdom and the UAE was showcased.
    It was stated the country hopes and prays for “the continued prosperity and continued success” of Saudi Arabia.
    ‘The UAE is everyone’s country’
    HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, reaffirmed the that the United Arab Emirates is “everyone’s country”.
    “The UAE is everyone’s country and we have tried to build a successful model – our doors and books will remain open to all,” he said on social media.

    Saudi’s Crown Prince receives the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine

    Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Friday.
    The Saudi health minister, Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah was also vaccinated on December 17, one day after the Kingdom received its first batch of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. He stated that Saudi Arabia hopes to have vaccines to cover around 70 per cent of the Kingdom’s population by the end of 2021.

    “What we are seeing today regarding the gains that have been achieved by the Kingdom since the beginning of the pandemic is an extension of one of the most important policies within Vision 2030 that prevention is better than cure,” Dr. Al-Rabiah said.

    Dr. Al-Rabiah also shared thanks and gratefulness to the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman for his determination to fulfil the journey of providing vaccines for all the Saudi Arabians.
    As reported by the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia, over half a million people have already registered to take the coronavirus vaccine since its launch last Tuesday.

    Dubai issues guidelines for New Year’s Eve celebrations

    As we approach the close of 2020, many will be preparing to celebrate. However, given the ongoing pandemic, the public needs to be mindful of precautions and guidelines in place for health and safety reasons.
    In line with this, the Dubai Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management has outlined some precautionary measures ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations in the emirate.

    The rules were announced via the Dubai Media Office Twitter account, which included a maximum cap on gatherings in households – no more than 30 people can be present at private family or social gatherings.
    Any gatherings found violating the above rules will be penalised. The host of the gathering will be fined Dhs50,000 and individuals will be fined Dhs15,000 each.

    It was reiterated that inspections would be conducted to ensure all gatherings were complying with the published guidelines.

    For those who will be celebrating New Year’s Eve around various establishments around Dubai, ensure you wear a mask at all times apart from when sitting at your assigned table and ensure social distancing measures are adhered to.

    Watch: Sheikh Hamdan visited this brand new Dubai restaurant on Christmas Day

    A brand new restaurant, which opened on Christmas Day, was visited by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Crown Prince of Dubai on its launch day.
    The brainchild of celebrity chef CZN Burak, who is hugely popular on social media with over 17 million followers, shared a series of photos and videos of Sheikh Hamdan visiting his new establishment, CZN Burak, located at Boulevard Point in Downtown Dubai.

    The new Turkish-Middle Eastern restaurant is the first Dubai-based establishment for Chef CZN Burak, who already has three popular restaurants in Turkey, where is from, and he has now decided to crack the Dubai F&B space.

    The new contemporary eatery has over 150 dishes on the menu which features lamb, assorted mixed grills, kebabs, hummus with pastrami and more.

    His Highness was treated to an array of dishes on his visit to the restaurant’s opening day, all of which were personally cooked and prepared by Chef CZN Burak himself.
    As many will know Sheikh Hamdan is a huge foodie, and is regularly seen dining out at some of Dubai’s most popular restaurants. Some of his favourites include Gaia, Shanghai ME, Avli by Tashas, BB Social Dining and more.
    Now that this new Downtown Dubai restaurant has Sheikh Hamdan’s approval, we’ll have to make a booking ASAP.

    As 2020 comes to a close, many will be reflecting on the year that has been. With all of us having to face some major challenges this year, we’ll have also learned some incredible life lessons from experiences and also inspiring people throughout 2020.
    This rings true, particularly for Emirates Woman. We’ve spoken to and championed some incredible women this year and we have learned many valuable philosophies and lessons from their wisdom and inspiration.

    So, as the year draws to a close, EW is looking back on just some of the inspiring women we championed this year.
    Amina Muaddi

    Gracing the cover of EW‘s ‘Go Your Own Way Issue’ in April, designer Amina Muaddi is someone who epitomises individuality and grit to go it your own way. In our exclsuive interview with her, she explained that she laways knew she wanted to be an entreprenuer.
    “After working with fashion magazines for a while I realised that I should not put my dreams on hold and I decided to start my first shoe company,” she said. “There is no right time, sometimes things work out sometimes they don’t. But you have to be brave and start, take the first step and then be ready for the adventure.”
    Fatma Al Otaiba

    Designer Fatma Al Otaiba started this year (and new decade) with a bang, by launching her new luxury brand ODEEM. For the last 10 years Al-Otaiba dreamt of starting her own handbag brand. The Dubai-based luxury label which aims to focus on timeless leather goods. Combining tradition with eclecticism, the designs draw on different textures and details that are sure to turn heads.
    This year, Al Otaiba has taught us about many things to do with mindfulness and gratitude, what it takes to be an entreprenuer and her pride for being an Emirati woman.

    Our cover star for May’s – ‘The Mindfulness Issue’, Ola Farahat is a rare combination – educated, beautiful and incredibly down to earth. With 1.2 million followers on social media, Farahat is the perfect exmaple on how to stay mindful and grateful. Despite having been in the social media space for many years, she explains it’s still a “dream”.
    “I just pursued my hobby and believed in it,” she told EW. “I appreciated every person who admires me because they made my dreams come true.”

    As the cover star for ‘The Summer Escape Issue’, Rania Fawaz showed us on a 12-hour shoot in 45-degree heat that she is focused, free-spirited and unfailingly hard-working. As she’s built her name in the social media space she told us how there is “no off switch”.
    “I think the key to being sane is always to be yourself across all platforms, that way it was not draining and I didn’t feel like I had to have time for myself,” she said. “I feel like the entire day is time for myself because of the way I choose to be.”

    This year Her Highness Sheikha Sana Al Maktoum launched her eponymous brand Sana Al Maktoum Fine Jewellery. However, her jewellery brand is so much more than just jewellery, Her Highness is encouraging women to find their inner strength through one treasured piece at a time. Her first collection for Sana Al Maktoum Fine Jewellery entitled ‘My Treasure’ is an ode to her late grandmother, using butterflies as the symbol.
    “Butterflies are symbols of transformation and beauty and she grew up at a time when options were limited for women, but she didn’t let that stop her,” Sheikha Sana she told EW in our exclusive interview with her. “She found a way to shine and to help others shine which is why I consider her a treasure.” Sheikha Sana also explained that each piece is “designed to be worn alone or layered together, each creation honours the memory of a remarkable woman and encourages the wearer to embark on a journey to find her own inner treasure”.

    Faiza Bouguessa is the brains behind the namesake label Bouguessa. The globally-championed has mastered exactly how the perfect cut inspires confidence. “Bouguessa is made to inspire confidence,” the designer told EW. “The ethos of the brand is all about minimal and sophisticated elegance for the modern woman. We recently announced our wish to move toward more sustainable practices, to allow women to feel good and do good when wearing our designs.”

    Gracing the cover of September’s – ‘The Power Issue’, Her Highness Sheikha Latifah Al Maktoum. As a truly powerful and inspirational figure, Her Highness knows exactly how to keep her mind in champion mode.

I can only control my actions not my surroundings or other people’s actions,” Her Highness said on overcoming challenges. “So why get frustrated by things you cannot control, it will not change anything? You have to make the best of every situation and there is always a light at the end of the tunnel even though sometimes you cannot see it.

Additionally, she’s able to facilitate change, paving the way for other women and girls in the region. “My role as the Chairperson of UAE GDA and being the most powerful women scientist, gives me huge opportunity to make change and influence decision-makers to bring more learning and career opportunities for girls and women,” she told EW.

    Khulood Thani, cover star for October’s – ‘The Bravery Issue’, combines her entrepreneurial spirit and extensive experience in culture and design and is focused on bringing innovative global fashion to an international platform. “I always trust my gut feeling, I have a special connection with the universe around me, and I like to follow the messages it reveals to me,” she told us.

    Captain Salma Al Baloushi is the first Emirati female to rise to First Officer’s rank at Etihad Airways. Earlier this year, Captain Salma spoke to us about what it takes to become a woman of firsts.
    “We get our mental obstacles from people around us who try to downgrade and discourage us from going ahead with things they’re not familiar with,” she said of her journey to success. “People kept telling me aviation was not for me, or this field was only meant for men, but my batch mates believed the opposite. It’s exhausting, but with the right support of your family, your company and a good understanding of the work environment, it’s possible.”

    Shaima Saleh Al-Husseini

    Shaima Saleh Al-Husseini is the managing director for the Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) and has been vital in the development of women’s sport in the Kingdom. She was right at the forefront when the Saudi Greens Team, which became the first Saudi women’s team ever to join an international event. In 2019, the Greens competed in the Global Goals World Cup (GGWCup) – a tournament that was launched to champion the role of sport in achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SGD) No. 5.
    Al-Husseini is incredibly proud of the change that’s happened in the Kingdom, and she only hopes this continues, she told EW earlier this year. “I hope to see more Saudi women become the faces of sport in Saudi,” she told EW recently. “Already we have a few very well-known professional athletes and some fitness professionals that are very well-known at the community level as well.”
