Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This’ gets millennial romance right, here’s why

    Life

Nobody Wants This: A romantic drama that isn’t hopeless after all
Netflix’s Nobody Wants This has quickly become a fan favorite, thanks to its exceptional writing, talented cast, and heartwarming storytelling. One of the series’ standout features is the witty and relatable dialogue penned by Erin Foster. Her ability to capture the nuances of modern relationships and create characters that feel incredibly authentic is evident in every scene.

At the heart of the series is the captivating chemistry between Kristen Bell and Adam Brody (Hello, Seth Cohen). Their on-screen camaraderie is electric, bringing a sense of realism and depth to their characters’ complex relationship. They wear their vulnerabilities and short-comings on their sleeves, which is what connects them to the audience the most.
The series boasts a stellar ensemble cast that complements the central duo perfectly. The loser siblings played by Justin Lupe (Morgan) and Timothy Simmons (Sasha) will make you miss the frenemies born to your parents.
Here are 6 reasons why ‘Nobody Wants This’ hits all the right notes:
    Relatable Characters
The series introduces us to a diverse cast of characters who feel incredibly authentic. Their struggles and  quirks are relatable, making it easy for viewers to connect with them on a personal level.

    Exceptional Writing
The writing in Nobody Wants This is sharp, witty, and emotionally resonant. The dialogue is natural and flows effortlessly, creating believable interactions between the characters. The usual complain viewers have with dialogues is that it doesn’t resonate with conversations people have in real life — that’s not the case with this show. From the brain rot rambling to the inside jokes between siblings, we’ve been there and done that.

    Strong Performances
The romantic genre has been sleeping on Adam Brody’s talent. While he proved his green flag abilities as Seth Cohen in The OC, it was about time he was roped in to do a mature show, depicting a relationship between older millennials. Also, him as a hot Rabbi? Sign us up to  the synagogue. Kristen Bell does comedy well and everyone knows that, but here, you see her play a character that is strong but complicated, emotionally mature but vulnerable — the writers have leaned into it beyond the surface.

    A Fresh Perspective on Relationships
Nobody Wants This offers a refreshing take on romantic relationships. The characters aren’t blinding falling in love for no rhyme or reason, there’s a synergy between them from the go, and it has been developed on, through the course of the show. The initial insecurities of getting to know someone and the fear of being rejected has been tapped into. Both Noah and Joanne have a distinctive personality, but their compatibility is based on their common humour and ability to enjoy each other’s company, despite their varying interest.
    Humorous Moments
There’s hahaha funny, and then there’s clever writing — this show is about the latter. The dialogues don’t make you cringe, instead, you’ll find yourself chuckling at all odd moments.
    A Diverse Representation
After obsessing over the priest from Fleabag, it’s about time we simp on Adam Brody’s traditional-but-equivocal Rabbi. Also, with the romance market saturated with Gen-Z narratives, it’s interesting to see a certain amount of attention returning to stories about couple in their late ’30s and ’40s.

Emily in Paris is coming back for Season 5: Everything to know

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

After yet another successful season, Emily in Paris has been renewed for season 5 by Netflix. Lily Collins shared the news on Instagram, while cheekily sipping on a cup of Italian espresso (obviously), hinting on the direction of where the storyline is headed.

Season 4 ended on yet another cliffhanger about Emily’s love life, but this time, she’s in Rome. let’s breakdown the last installment, shall we?
If you’ve already watched the 4th season of Emily in Paris, let’s address the most important question — are you team Gabriel or team Marcelo?

Everyone’s favourite American-in-Paris, Emily, played by Lily Collins returned with the show’s 4th season last month. The second half of the season dropped last week and let’s just say, the drama in her rollercoaster life continued to keep us hooked.
The season began with the golden confusion that has now become a redundant — will Emily and Gabriel get together? Spoiler alert: they do. But, to everyone’s disappointment, the couple barely makes it out of their honeymoon phase, before calling it quits on the icy French slopes. Reason? Mademoiselle Camille (how original) and an apparent fake pregnancy.

The will-they-wont they trope between Emily and Gabrielle was stretched for so long, that eventually when they did get together, the chemistry didn’t live up to the amplified hype. Which is why, when a new man was introduced in Emily’s life (sorry, Alife), minutes before the anti-climatic breakup with the resident hot chef, it felt like a welcoming pivot in the story.
The second half of the season gave us a new internet boyfriend to crush on. Eugenio Franceschini, the Italian actor was roped in to play the part of Marcello Muratori. A refreshing departure from the French and the British hottie, Marcello came in guns blazing for Emily’s heart — the Loro-Piana-style-quiet-lxuury-Italian-old-money story line that he was given also helped.

Whisking her away to Rome and showing her the city on his classic Italian vespa earned him the brownie points amongst the ladies.
On the work front, Emily continued being the character that saves the day — all while intermingling it with her already complicated love life. Picture this: Her French ex (Gabriel) is still an existing client, Her British ex (Alfie) works with one of Agence Grateau’s clients, and her soon to be next, Italian fashion Mogul (Marcello), will also be joining the roster.

With the Muratori’s giving their precious brand to Agence Grateau for revival, Emily has both work and play tying her down to Rome. The season ends for Emily with a new apartment, a new city and a new man — a serious déjà vu to the pilot episode.
What happens next? Well, that should all unfold in season 5. Until then, au revoir, or, should we now say arrivederci? *wink wink.*

The Bear S3: A culinary catharsis (even for the air fryer enthusiasts)

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Anthony Bourdain’s words echo as I settle in to watch the latest season of The Bear: “Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don’t have.” This Emmy-winning show isn’t just about fancy plates and family drama; it’s a pressure cooker of ambition, mental health, and the brutal realities of the restaurant industry.

For the uninitiated, The Bear follows Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a young chef from the fine-dining world who returns to Chicago to run his family’s Italian beef shop after his brother’s suicide. The show masterfully captures the symphony of chaos in the kitchen, the dark humor that keeps everyone afloat, and the relentless pressure to succeed in a cutthroat business.

My expertise within the kitchen remain constrained to the bare minimum of dumping things in the air fryer – later, plating the dino nuggets with a gourmet-style ketchup ‘swish’ on the plate. But, will that stop me from disapprovingly nodding alongside Carmy when a piece of wagyu is overdone by 0.01 second or when a dehydrated flower isn’t angular enough on a piece of cake? Absolutely no.

Season 3 takes a sharp turn. While the first two seasons were a frantic scramble to transform a greasy spoon into a fine-dining haven (think dental surgery without anesthesia), season 3 delves into Carmy’s psyche. The premiere is a masterclass in silent storytelling, a journey through Carmy’s fractured memories. We see glimpses of a tyrannical ex boss, happier times with his girlfriend Claire, and fleeting moments of respite in Copenhagen. It’s a lyrical exploration of what shaped him into the talented but deeply troubled chef he is today.

Back in the present, Carmy’s relentless pursuit of culinary perfection throws everything into disarray. His single-mindedness alienates his team. The Bear isn’t afraid to explore the vicious cycle of abuse that festers behind the decorative curtains of a fine dining kitchen, turning Carmy into the very thing he despises – an unreceptive bully.
A standout episode is “Napkins,” directed by Ayo Edebiri (Sydney), which unveils the backstory of the enigmatic line cook, Tina. We also get glimpses into the world of real-life culinary giants like Thomas Keller and Daniel Boulud, who mentored a young Carmy. These cameos feel organic, adding depth to the show’s exploration of ambition and mentorship.

Despite its dark exploration of ambition’s underbelly, The Bear retains its signature blend of frantic energy and quiet moments of grace. Stellar performances and superb camerawork continue to make it one of the most compelling shows on television. Season 3 may not be a smooth ride, but it’s a journey well worth taking.

Run don’t walk: Netflix just dropped the first look of Emily in Paris Season 4

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Emily in Paris Returns: Fashion gets bolder, love Gets Messier in Season 4.

Calling all Francophiles and hopeless romantics, Netflix has unveiled a first look at the highly-anticipated season 4 of “Emily in Paris,” the Darren Star comedy that’s equal parts fashion inspiration and Parisian escapism.
All the BTS shots from Emily in Paris S4

A Recap of Emily’s Parisian Adventures (So Far)
For those new to the show, the first three seasons follow Emily Cooper, a young American marketing executive who lands her dream job at a Parisian firm. What unfolds is a whirlwind of cultural clashes, career challenges, and of course, a whole lot of love triangles.
Emily navigates the chic world of Parisian fashion while struggling to master the language and customs. She develops close friendships with her colleagues, particularly Mindy, an aspiring singer, and clashes (but secretly admires) her sophisticated boss, Sylvie.
The biggest drama, however, revolves around Emily’s love life. Torn between the charming chef Gabriel, her downstairs neighbor, and the kind Brit, Alfie, Emily’s heart (and loyalties) are constantly tested.
What to Expect in Season 4
Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger, with Emily caught between her feelings for Gabriel and Alfie, further complicated by the news of Gabriel’s ex, Camille, expecting his baby.
The first look photos for season 4 hint at a bolder Emily, both in terms of her personality and her fashion choices. Costume designer Marylin Fitoussi promises a “reinterpretation of Parisian fashion codes” with Emily taking more risks and asserting her own unique style.
The synopsis offers a glimpse into the upcoming chaos: Emily wrestles with her feelings for Gabriel while he prepares for fatherhood, Sylvie faces a personal dilemma, and Mindy’s band scrambles for funds for Eurovision. Underlying it all is the undeniable chemistry between Emily and Gabriel, but with secrets threatening to derail everything.
    A Season Split in Two
“Emily in Paris” season 4 will be a double feature, premiering in two parts. Part 1 arrives on August 15, 2024, followed by Part 2 on September 12, 2024. So, get ready to binge-watch, ooh la la at the fashion, and gasp at the inevitable romantic entanglements that await Emily in the City of Lights.
