Streaming soon: new HBO series to watch now that ‘Succession’ is over

    Life

    by Camille Macawili

A painful reality we all live in nowadays is trying to fill the void when our favourite TV series ends.
Hot off the spectacular ending of Succession, HBO is already on a roll to release its next hit drama, The Idol. From Euphoria to White Lotus to its latest hit Succession — we can’t help but get excited with the premise The Idol brings.
The brainchild of Abel Tesfaye (formerly) known as The Weeknd, this series has been co-created with Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson and Iranian creative producer Reza Fahim. It hit its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival this year — screening the first two episodes, sparking conversations ahead of the first episode streaming which airs on June 4, 2023.

The scandalous plot is based on “the sleaziest love story in Hollywood”, tells The Weeknd, who plays as a self-help guru and modern-day cult leader. He brainwashes Jocelyn, a troubled pop star, played by Lily Rose-Depp into a clichéd dangerous world of illegal substances and everything in between. While it’s nowhere near original nor disruptive, it is still worth watching a few more episodes for the ensembles and the vibe.
The star-studded production also features pop singer Troye Sivan, K-pop star Jennie Ruby Jane of Blackpink, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, and more.

Press play to watch the official teaser of HBO’s The Idol:

Watched XO Kitty? Follow up with 7 other romantic dramas to fill the void

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Author Jenny Han is back with another teenage drama, but this time, it’s focused on the Gen-Z. XO Kitty is a spin-off of Han’s original ‘To All The Boys I Loved Before.’
This particular series focuses on the youngest Covey sister, who happens to finally live her own love story after meddling in the love lives of her older sisters. Katherine Song Covey a.k.a Kitty is possibly the bravest out of the three sisters. She goes after what she wants and isn’t afraid to wear her heart on her sleeves.
Set in the beautiful city of Seoul (the land where all the romantic K-Dramas emerge from), XO Kitty follows the protagonist’s journey of finding love, forging a connection with her late mother and eventually finding herself amidst the chaos.
What sets this drama apart? It could have easily been a cliché narrative where the boy meets the girl, some silly confusion and then a happy ending. Han approached a different storyline with this show — instead of giving the viewers a simple comfort watch, she toyed with the idea of sexual identity and how feelings can be fickle in your growing years.
More than the romantic storylines in this show, it’s interesting to watch Kitty find friendships in a new country that become her ultimate source of strength through difficult times.
Teenage dramas are typically known for pitting young girls against each other over a boy. While in the beginning, it does seem like this show will take a similar route — but through the course of ten episodes, it pivots. A refreshing departure from the girl vs. girl trope.
Overall, XO Kitty is a perfect watch on a casual Friday night when you aren’t looking for any mind-utilising content. But after you finish the series, it will leave you in a warm and fuzzy place.

    Lifestyle

    by Camille Macawili

International Women’s Day is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on where we are, and where we need to be.
Seeing one show can have a powerful effect when you see yourself represented and reflected on screen, it gives power to your experience.
Many of these are part of Netflix’s International Women’s Month Collection, which aims to highlight the voices of women behind and in front of the camera. Top tip: also look out for the “Strong Arab Women” and “Arab Women Behind the Camera” rows in the collection.
Emirates Woman shares five Netflix shows made by Arab women that feature strong female leads that we recommend adding to your watch list.
    The Exchange

Inspired by actual events, two women set out to pioneer the cutthroat stock market of 1980s Kuwait — and disrupt its corrupt boys’ club along the way. The Exchange brings to life the glorious 1980s when the stock market was booming and fashion was bigger and brighter than ever before. It brought on a unique and untold women-centric story of Farida and Munira to screens across the world with a star-studded cast of Kuwaiti talent.
    The Swimmers

Based on real-life events, this inspiring and heartfelt movie tells the story of two young sisters, Yusra and Sara Mardini who embark on a risky voyage – from war-torn Syria to the 2016 Rio Olympics, putting their heart and swimming skills to heroic use. Real-life sisters Nathalie and Manal Issa were cast in the roles of Yusra and Sara Mardini respectively, and the film is directed by Welsh-Egyptian Director Sally El Hosaini.
    Finding Ola

Finding Ola tells the story of a divorced mom who embarks on a journey of self-discovery while dealing with the challenges of raising two children and making ends meet. The Eat Pray Love meets Raising Helen made it to the Top 10 after launch and with a season 2 in the pipeline.
The show tackles the nuances of mother-daughter relationships, friendships, second chances and self-discovery, with Hend Sabry playing the role of Ola Abdelsabour and debuting as executive producer.
    Whispers

Breaking the glass ceiling all the way is Whispers, a first-of-its-kind Saudi Arabian thriller series led by award-winning director, Hana Alomair. The eight-episode series is about a family facing the death of their patriarch, Hassan, just as his mysterious past begins to resurface days before the launch of a smart app owned by the family business. The fast-paced drama develops from different protagonists’ perspectives and features several unconventional women characters.
    Al Rawabi School for Girls

A young adult drama that sheds light on the impact of bullying on young women, through the eyes of a group of Arab teens navigating friendships, morality and difficult life choices. The series, made by a majority female cast and crew, is a true example of a story made in the Arab world and loved globally.
