Dubai-based Italian jewellery designer’s guide to a La Dolce Vita summer in Capri

    Life

    by Camille Macawili

A high-profile clientele, A-list celebrity customers and the support of prominent industry insiders propelled fine jewellery label Faraone Mennella into the jewelry spotlight.
Drawing design inspiration from classical Italian heritage, award-winning designers Roberto Faraone Mennella and Amedeo Scognamiglio craft tactile, one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces that have been worn by the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, and Charlize Theron, to name a few. Now, with the Amedeo’s recent move to Dubai, he is plotting his next steps for the brand.
Emirates Woman chats with Amedeo Scognamiglio about his beginnings – as well as sharing insider tips and hidden gems and insider tips on how to do Capri like a local.
When was the point you realized you wanted to have your own label and designing jewelry could be your career?
I am the 6th generation of a family dynasty devoted to the craftsmanship of cameos and coral in Italy since 1857 so jewelry is in my DNA. But when I moved to NYC in my early 20s, Manhattan’s art and fashion scene of the 90s started to influence my aesthetics, helping me redefine my design vision. The mix of my Italian classic heritage and the NYC pop culture pushed me to dare and reinvent the design codes I absorbed in my father’s workshop. At that point, I felt empowered to not simply keep running a centuries-old family business, but revolutionise that ancient craft making it cool and current.
Love Lemons 18kt Diamond Earrings Dhs25,155 available at faraonemennella.com
You split your time between New York, London and Capri then recently moved to Dubai – tell us about this.
I split my time between NYC and London while enjoying my summer months in Capri which is home to me and to my 2 brands’ flagship stores. After Covid-19, and the tragic loss of Roberto Faraone Mennella my partner and best friend, I felt like I needed to move somewhere where I could start again and not live with the memories. With the help and guidance of my dear Emirati friends, I moved here last year, and I still pinch myself every day how lucky I am. Dubai, to me now what NYC felt in1998: vibrant, energetic, advanced and exciting.
For those who are new to the brand, what are your hero designs that are driving sales in the Middle East?
Faraone Mennella’s iconic pieces, even after 20 years now, are the ones first seen on Sex & The City back then. Stella Collection, our first design, is now our signature and iconic quintessentially Faraone Mennella collection. Over the years, and thanks to our long collaboration with Carolina Herrera, the fashion queen of NYC, we specialized in couture and bespoke high jewelry collections we only sell in our own boutiques and to private clients.
Abracadabra Earrings Dhs24,815 available at thatconceptstore.com
How did you develop your signature technique?
Although I am lucky to come from a family tradition and was able to ‘’experiment’’ and learn all the different angles of jewellery making from the very early age of 13 years old. When I design, I think of places, gowns, yachts and parties.. where my ladies will want to wear my jewellery.
Roberto Faraone Mennella and Amedeo Scognamiglio
Being an independent label, does that limit what you can do?
The most discerning and sophisticated luxury shoppers are always on the lookout for niche brands offering a product not seen everywhere. Luxury is about dreaming and holding memories of experiences that can’t be replicated. This is what we offer, and the reason why we are able to thrive in a highly competitive market is due to the authenticity and uniqueness we have over the big conglomerates.
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
A few memorable ones are: designing the jewelry for Sex & The City (2002); being included in TIME Style & Design’s 100 most influential designers (2007); Fondazione AltaGamma, Best Jewellery Design award (2020); but above and beyond anything, working with Roberto Faraone Mennella for 20 years, to see our dream of the early days in NYC become a globally recognized luxury brand. Now that I am left alone at the helm, my only reason to work is to prepare our brand’s legacy for the future, in honor of Roberto’s life. Now it’s a luxury brand with a higher purpose.
One thing to look forward to in Capri every summer?
The annual Faraone Mennella ‘’Viva Capri’’ event! It started in 2012 when we opened. We thought it would only be a party for the official opening, but our clients decided it had to be a yearly reunion. And so every year, the first week of July we celebrate jewellery, summer, and friendship with a truly eventful party with dancing and singing, in the most iconic locations of the island.
The best way to spend a lazy summer day in Capri…
Don’t plan, don’t schedule, don’t stress. Enjoy the island, the way the ancient Romans did. La Dolce Vita!
What’s your top tip for travelling to Capri?
No need to stress about expensive private transfers from Napoli – enjoy the 50-minute ride with the commercial hydrofoil lines, they are easy, faster, and more comfortable. From Dubai, FlyDubai has direct flights to Naples airport is better than a private jet and makes my life and commute so easy.

As per the Islamic calendar, it will fall between Zul Hijjah 9 to 12, resulting in a four-day long break. But since these dates are chalked right before the weekend, residents of UAE might just enjoy a hefty break of six days.

IN PARTNERSHIP: Riviera reverie — “a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream.” It is exactly the sentiment that Twiggy by La Cantine, the new beach club and restaurant at the park Hyatt Dubai Lagoon brings to Dubai.
Located at the edge of the Park Hyatt Dubai Lagoon, Twiggy by La Cantine is a whimsical escape. Once you’re here, you can tune out from the rest of the world and get momentarily lost in this minimal space. Under the shining sun, above the cobalt blue waters of this Persian Gulf lagoon — the white sand beaches juxtapose it all, perfectly nestled next to the Park Hyatt’s stunning 100-m infinity pool.
At Twiggy, the art of idleness is celebrated by enjoying the simple pleasures of life. The Provence-inspired decor ensures you make switch up your mood on a mundane day. You can begin your day by lounging, eating and swimming — until the sun melts into oblivion.

Under the watchful eyes of Pierre Pirajean, Héléna Paraboschi and Rizwan Kassim, the one-of-a-kind flavour of La Cantine has been recreated in Dubai, but with a distinct approach. Starting with La Cantine du Faubourg in Dubai and Ninive to Lana Lusa, Tagomago, Mimi Kakushi, Gohan, Kyma Beach and Madeleine et Marcel — each space is created with a state-of-the-art vision.
La Cantine strategically integrates its aesthetic without interrupting the royal view, the sea and the sky. The decor boasts of a Mediterranean ambiance, infusing rattan, pastel and hints of cream along with turquoise blue, inspired by the lagoon.
Having a meal Twiggy is an experience to behold, as the view and food make for an invincible combination. The team of chefs knows that the majestic sun-drenched view is doing its job, by satiating the appetites with delectable food, they take this escapade to a whole new level.
The chef’s beach club cuisine includes an array of lip-smacking dishes. From burrata and royal prawns to sushi platters — the chef knows how to ace a delicate seafood platter and handle the most sophisticated caviar. Whether it’s mastering the famous Angus beef to perfecting popular dishes like black truffle pizza and quinoa and kale salad — the menu will transport you across Ibiza, Saint-Tropez, Cassis and Formentera via Okinawa.
The great outdoors at Twiggy by La Cantine could easily pass off as a slice of paradise. Three gorgeous cabanas set slightly behind the tables offers you the ultimate privacy. Unwinding with your group of 6 to 12, the heavenly corners called Coco Cabana, Bardot Cabana and Grace Cabana can be your relaxing hideaways. Ozen Bolifushi in Maldives is the perfect secluded slice of paradise for slow living

    Lifestyle

    by Ruman Baig

While luxurious resorts in The Maldives are hardly scarce – here you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything other than smart island retreats – Ozen Bolifushi is simply put, a cut above, taking barefoot luxury to an entirely new level.
    The Arrival
Step off the plane and onto the resort’s private catamaran, a smart charter outfitted with cream sofas, an espresso bar and panoramic windows. The convenient 30-minute ride to Ozen Bolifushi relieves the hassle of connecting seaplanes, a true sanity-saver when travelling with children. As you near the island, the resort zooms into focus – all swaying palm trees and powdery sunbleached sands surrounded by the brightest blue water. You’ll be met with traditional Maldivian drumming, a fresh coconut water and a mist of Avène’s thermal spring water, before heading straight to your villa in one of the island’s elegant Rolls Royce buggies along with your personal butler.
    The Vibe
The island is smaller than some, lending an intimate feel where faces become familiar after just a day. You’ll find there is a sleepy sense of stillness and privacy to Ozen, withonly the sweeping waves, paradise-perfect beaches and occasional guest on a bike within eyesight. Days can be spent lounging, swimming, snorkelling and scuba-diving, or browse the island’s boutiques, charter a yacht, feed the stingrays at sunset and simply wander the maze of palm tree-lined pathways dotted with crochet hammocks and swings. And while adults settle poolside, children of all ages will be kept entertained with daily activities, such as treasure hunts, pizza making, water polo and ice hockey on the resort’s open-air ice rink, a first in The Maldives. With Ozen’s Reserve Plan, guests will not be required to sign throughout their stay, allowing for complete self-indulgence on the free-flowing premium bottles and culinary experiences.

    The Stay
No stone has been left unturned when it comes to furnishing the villas, where spacious suites offer floor-to-ceiling windows with unobstructed ocean views, walk-in wardrobes, private pools, outdoor dining verandas, spa-inspired bathrooms and a fully-stocked private bar. Perched above the sea, the water villas stand out and are perhaps what springs tomind when envisioning the Maldives. Accessed by bike or buggy along a boardwalk, these villas offer a sprawling outdoor deck with several seating areas and sunken sofas, from which you can spot shoals of fluorescent fish swirl by. A number of the villas also feature a water slide into the sea which makes for a playful way to wake up on your morning swim. For the ultimate in seclusion and splendour, the Royal Reserve is a sprawling threebedroom beachfront home (along with separate spaces for staff) complete with an open-air jacuzzi, a gym, pool, an overwater bar, plus a dedicated Teppanyaki restaurant as well as a kitchen and grape cellar.
    Wellness
When not racking up steps strolling the island, guests can take to the ocean-facing treadmills at the gym or book in for a group class and sunrise flow on the yoga pavilion. Further unwind at Ozen’s spa, an idyllic garden sanctuary where expert facials and knot-banishing massages in the overwater treatment suites will soothe you into a mediative state. Guests can also book a consultation with the island’s resident Ayurveda doctor, who after checking your pulse will recommend holistic healing remedies to work into your daily regime.

    Dining
Food at Ozen draws on a “garden-to-table” concept where chefs plate dishes using herbs, seasonal vegetables, microgreens and tropical fruits freshly picked from island soil. Breezy lunches will be spent on the beach at Vista Del Mar where the varied buffet includes a spread of salads, grilled meats, seafood, sushi and homemade pastas to rival that in Rome. Come evening, feast on mezze and tagines at Sangu or sample Saffron’s mouth-watering curries through their concept dining experience. While fine dining restaurant ORIGINE, delivers an elegant culinary journey along with grape tasting sessions held by the resort’s enthusiastic sommelier – an experience well worth booking ahead for.

This is when the scorching UAE heat is likely to end

    Lifestyle

    by Olivia Morris

Had enough of the scorching UAE heat? Well, we’ve got some good news for you.
It appears the sweltering summer days are now numbered, according to a UAE astronomer.
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, a prominent member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, took to Twitter to announce the Suhail star is on the horizon, which signifies an end to the sweltering UAE heat.
He announced the UAE can expect to see the star appear around August 24, 2022.

The Suhail star is one of the brightest stars in the sky and is estimated to be 313 light-years away from Earth.
During ancient times, Arabs would learn through to the stars when hot periods would come, when the rain would come and so on, which would help farmers, seasons for grazing and travel, fishing season and more.
Given that temperatures recently peaked at 50 degrees celsius in some parts of the UAE, news that cooler weather is on the horizon will be welcomed with open arms.

Temperatures to approach 50°C in the UAE – when is the cooler weather coming?

    Lifestyle

    by Team Emirates Woman

As the scorching heat in the UAE continues, temperatures in some parts of the country are set to approach 50 degrees celsius.
According to the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), some parts of Abu Dhabi, including Gasyoura and Razeen, could reach up to 49°C today.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the country temperatures are set to be around the 41°C mark.
And while the sweltering heat continues to rage on, it begs the question: when exactly can we expect the cooler weather to come?
There’s actually an ancient method the people of the Arabian peninsula have been using for centuries to decipher the weather, as well as timings, seasons and more – the stars.
In relation to the sign summer is coming to an end, it’s dependent on when the Suhail star – the second brightest star in the sky, which is estimated to be 313 light-years away from Earth – is spotted.
It may have felt like the sweltering summer heat has been never-ending this year, but there’s a tell-tale sign that’s appeared meaning that summer is officially drawing to a close.
The Suhail star – one of the brightest stars in the sky, which is estimated to be 313 light-years away from Earth – has been spotted.
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, previously explained to the Khaleej Times Arabs would learn “through to the stars” when hot periods would come, when the rain would come and so on.
“And by counting the stars, farmers and people in the villages knew when to plough their land, and when to sow in preparation for the rain,” he said. “People of the mainland got to know the seasons for grazing and travel, whereas those of the sea were able to know the fishing and travel seasons from the stars.”
Generally, the Suhail star makes an appearance around late August, signalling cooler weather is on the horizon.
So, hopefully, there’s not too long to wait for the very best weather to arrive in the UAE.

7 reasons you need to book this eclectic Dubai staycation ASAP

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

With Dubai summers reaching peak temperatures, the best way to escape is with an activity-fuelled staycation without any added hassle.
After recently opening in Dubai, 25hours Hotel One Central brings a quirky experience in the heart of the emirate with views overlooking the city’s impressive skyline.
As I was on the lookout for a quirky getaway, this all-in-one experience became the perfect escape combining elements of nomadism with a flair.
This staycation was undoubtedly packed with a host of global traditions in one venue and here’s why Emirates Woman suggests you should add it to your bucket list too.
    Unwind in a quirky suite

Nothing about 25hours is conventional, particularly its nomadic-themed suites, each with its own individual flair. To be transported to nature, The Farmstay Suite offers features such as a double rainfall shower and a hammock to relax after a long stay. Meanwhile, the Artistic Village Suite is an invigorating space to get your creative juices flowing.  If you’re looking for something a bit extra, The Hakawati Suite, features two private bars, a photo booth, a double bathtub, a dance floor and a secret staircase leading to an expansive space for all your friends to gather. The most unique feature is the Sheikh trip-king-sized bed with a seamless view of the city’s skyline. For a summer retreat escape, guests receive a 40 per cent discount on the hotel’s best available rates when booking for two nights or more until September 30, 2022.
    A culinary journey

From freshly baked pretzels to authentic German dishes, Ernst Biergarten located within the hotel takes guests on a traditional journey. Without any dearth of entertainment, this must-visit spot features quiz nights, football screenings and live singing. This Bavarian banquet effortlessly mimics an old traditional pub in Germany with décor put together with fine attention to detail. With events such as Oktoberfest soon approaching, you know exactly where to visit next.
    Hit the pool

If you’re looking to catch some sun, the pool at the hotel’s sixth-floor desk showcases unrivalled views of the Museum of the Future. Every Sunday, the venue combines views with vibes at the Cool Runnings pool party with cocktails and Afrobeats to keep the energy up throughout. The day is spruced with a delectable Jamaican BBQ including beef patties, skewers, slushies, and more. From 2pm to 8pm, guests can soak up the sun and wind down from the weekend in this enticing environment.
    Record your own podcast

Plan on starting your own podcast? This venue offers its very own podcast studio to record the next inspiring idea you might have. With professionally-equipped mikes, guests can use their time wisely to create content in this inspiring space. Without limiting to podcasts, guests also have the option of mixing their own vinyl and perhaps recording the next best hit.
Stay productive in the co-working space

To ensure your work doesn’t take a backseat the hotel is packed with a plethora of co-working spaces including the Nomadic Bar. With freshly brewed coffees and an array of authentic desserts, visitors can dine and work all day in tranquillity. Situated in the heart of the hotel, this local barista is operated by one of Dubai’s most popular coffee houses, Nightjar Coffee. Without being limited to the coffee shop, guests can also work in different areas of the hotel including the common rooms and desks adjacent to the vinyl studio.
    Rejuvenate

For some me-time, The Extra Spa offers a plethora of relaxing treatments and massages to rejuvenate for the week ahead. From express treatments to 60-minute full-body massages, there are a host of services for a luxurious escape. For a deep cleanse, the salt room is open for guests to use post their massage and to feel replenished from the inside out.
    Book a delectable Indian brunch

With the weekend known for brunches, the hotel’s authentic Indian restaurant, Tandoor Tina serves a variety of dishes with a playful British twist. Every Saturday from 1pm to 4:40 pm, visitors can dine with their friends and family with a host of flavourful dishes and mouth-watering cocktails. The non-alcoholic package starts at Dhs245, the house package is priced at Dhs345 and the bubbles package is at Dhs445.
While you walk in as a stranger, you walk out feeling just as much at home with the hotel’s friendly staff and simplicity. I couldn’t recommend a stay here more.
