12 Things Healthy Women Do Before 7 A.M.

Even if you wouldn’t call yourself a “morning person,” the wee hours before the day begins can serve as a great opportunity for self-care, wellness, creativity, reflection, and productivity. What you do when you first wake up matters because how you spend your morning can set you up for success for the rest of the day. Stop scrolling through TikTok or hitting “snooze” and try these 12 things right when you wake up. FYI, you don’t need to check every item off the list every day to be considered “healthy” (nobody got time for that!). The goal is to offer inspiration for you to prioritize your health, turn happiness into a routine, and make the most of your mornings, whatever that looks like to you. Use these 12 things as inspo to experiment with or adapt to your morning routine in whatever way feels best, but above all, make your mornings work for you (yes, even before 7 a.m.).

    1. Drink a big glass of water
Drinking more water is one of the best things you could do for your body. Especially after sleeping all night, it’s important to rehydrate as soon as you wake to feel more energized. Make it a goal to drink a big glass of water in the morning right after waking up. Yes, that means before downing a cup of coffee, grabbing a bite to eat, or taking a shower. Make it a part of your usual morning repertoire to avoid feeling sluggish or tired and rehydrate the body as soon as possible.

    2. Establish a skincare routine and stick to it
So you work out, you eat healthy, and you drink water, but don’t forget to take care of your skin too. All you need is a quick 4-5-step process, but if you have the extra time or love a little extra indulgence, put on a face mask or massage in oil while you brush your teeth. You’ll be taking care of your skin for the long term while reaping those instant-glow benefits for the rest of the day. Also remember that it’s not just the skin above your neckline that’s important, so take care of the rest of your body with hydrating body lotion or oil, and apply the same care as you would to your face on the neck and décolletage.

    3. Set your alarm a few minutes earlier than you need to
If your mornings feel like a race against the clock, consider waking up extra early to have a slow, calm start to your day. You might have limited control over your mornings (like an early work start time or a child to take care of), so waking up just 10-15 minutes earlier than you need to will help you feel more in control and calmer throughout the entire day. Whether you spend your time meditating, indulging in a luxurious skincare routine, or just brewing a cup of coffee with a moment of silence, you will not miss the 10 minutes of extra sleep.

    4. Don’t look at your phone
If the first thing you do after your alarm goes off is check your email or answer text messages, you’re starting your day off reacting to what others need from you instead of giving yourself time to focus on what you need. Give yourself at least a little time to be fully present instead of falling prey to the reactive, response mode from all those notifications and alerts. Stay off social media, don’t check your email, and ignore that text message alert for at least 30 minutes after waking up.

    5. Make your bed
Not only will it feel good to get into a made bed later at night, but it’s also important for the success of your day. Making your bed first thing every morning means one small win before you even have a cup of coffee, which subconsciously will motivate you to achieve thousands of small wins throughout the day (and you know what they say about small wins: They lead up to really big ones). Plus, Gretchen Rubin found in her research that it’s the easiest and most common daily habit you can do to boost happiness.

    6. Carve out 15-30 minutes for yourself
Maybe you’re used to getting straight to work tasks or your to-do list, and you tell yourself you’ll meditate, move your body, or sit and read later in the day, but how often does that really happen? Place “me time” at the top of your to-do list instead of hoping you’ll have time later by setting aside 15-30 minutes every morning to do something just for you. Write, draw, paint, listen to your favorite playlist, practice French—whatever it is, make sure it’s something you’re excited to do. Another option is to spend a few minutes reflecting before beginning your day by journaling or meditating.

    7. Connect with someone you love
We’re all about some “me time,” but connecting with the people you love is a crucial part of your self-care routine too. Connecting first thing in the morning will give you those warm and fuzzies all day long and help you remember that the point of life is to enjoy it. Pause for a minute and pet your dog, smile at your roommate, call your mom, kiss your significant other, or write a thank you card to a coworker. All it takes is 60 seconds to check in and reconnect with the people you love most.

    8. Eat (or prep) a healthy breakfast
PSA for those of you who claim to not have time for breakfast or that you don’t want breakfast: Breakfast is a crucial opportunity to fit in more nutrients and give your body energy to get through the day. If you don’t feel like eating when you first wake up, no worries. Try to prep something for later in the morning when you are hungry so you can make sure it’s ready to go. Not sure what to make? We’ve got you covered. Try these breakfast bowls, healthy breakfast ideas, and sweet or savory options. If your mornings are usually rushed, try prepping your meal the night before.

    9. Clean one area of your home
Ugh, we get it. Who wants to do any chores in the morning before a long day of work? We’re not suggesting you pull out the mop bucket or deep clean an entire room first thing in the morning (we can’t all be Monica Gellar!). You can truly make a huge impact in less than 15 minutes by putting away laundry, wiping the counters, or unloading the dishwasher. You’ll be able to enjoy your entire day and feel less scattered when your space is clean, and you won’t be pushing off more chores to do later.

    10. Prep lunch or dinner
The healthiest people know that eating healthy requires thought and preparation. If you wait until you’re starving to think about your next meal, you’re more likely to go get fast food or heat up something from the freezer. If you only have a minute, plan what you’re going to eat for the rest of the day, much like you plan out your calendar and to-do list. It can either be a recipe based on what you’re craving or what you’re going to order from the restaurant down the road. If you have 10-20 minutes, start chopping veggies or even throw ingredients in your instant pot. It will save you time later and ensure you’re making the healthiest decisions possible.

    11. Make a to-do list
It’s easy to start the day with your head swimming with everything you need to do. Stop, take a breath, and start writing. Writing everything down on paper will make it easier for you to focus on one task and feel less overwhelmed. Don’t forget to also prioritize life goals. Of course, you’ll always have to do the mundane house chores or tedious tasks, but figure out where you can outsource these items and prioritize what will get you closer to your goals first thing so you make sure to get it done (yes, that means a workout or the brainstorm meeting you’ve been putting off).

    12. Move your body
Aside from helping you feel accomplished, morning workouts help your body feel more awake, energized, and productive through the day. But don’t worry: If you don’t have the time (or energy) to go on a run, do a fitness class, or get to the gym before 7 a.m., you don’t need a full workout to reap the benefits. Try going on a walk to get outside, do a quick yoga flow to move the body, or stretch to warm up your muscles. No matter what type of movement your body craves in the morning, it will help wake you up and keep you energized through your day.

15 Non-Toxic Wellness Products To Score From Target (That Are All Under $30)

As a wellness editor, it probably comes as absolutely no surprise to anyone that I live for wellness products. Supplements, essential oils, non-toxic skincare—you name it, I’ve tried it. But shopping for wellness products is different from shopping for a foundation or pair of jeans: A lot more goes into it than finding the right size or shade. The world of supplements can be totally confusing—”all-natural” doesn’t always mean healthy, and everything from essential oils to SPF can get expensive AF. What’s a girl to do? The answer: Head to Target.
That’s right, the store you go to “just for fun” on Sundays is not only good for wardrobe basics or home decor items you definitely don’t need (but always talk yourself into buying). The aisles of Target are loaded with wellness hidden treasures, from sexual health items to skincare that’s actually healthy for your skin. And because it’s all from Target, you know it’s totally affordable too. I scoured the aisles so you don’t have to—shop 15 natural wellness products you’ve got to try, all under $30.

    Dr. Bronner’s
    Pure-Castile Soap
There are a few reasons why this basic soap has a very un-basic cult following. For one, it’s as clean as it gets, with 90 percent organic ingredients. But it’s also certified fair trade, comes in sustainable packaging, and has an amazing scent. It’s called 18-in-1 because you really can use it 18 ways (I checked). Try it for face/body wash, hand soap, house cleaner, or as a gentle soap for makeup brushes. Trust me, you’ll want to buy in bulk.

    Organic Cotton Tampons
Let’s talk tampons for a sec. You’re literally inserting them into your body, so shouldn’t we care about how they’re made or what chemicals they contain instead of just how much they absorb? Expect better from your period products: This cotton is not only organic, but it also comes with a BPA-free applicator. If that’s not enough to convince you to switch, every purchase gives period products to girls who need them. Not a tampon fan? Check out Cora’s other amazing period products.

    Vital Proteins
    Collagen Beauty Greens Powder
Most of you are probably already collagen stans, but for those who live under a rock or have yet to get on the collagen bandwagon, Target has you covered. This one is made with organic wheat grass and spinach, so you’re getting many antioxidants and benefits from greens as well as the collegen. As with any supplement, talk to your doctor before taking.

Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum – SPF 35
PSA: There are so many non-toxic SPF options that are better for you and the environment—there’s really no reason to stick to plain old chemical sunscreen. My personal favorite is this gem from Versed. Made with non-nano zinc oxide physical sunscreen, the formula offers protection from the sun without leaving a white tint or cast (even on deeper skin tones).

    The Honey Pot
    Feminine Wash
Now onto vaginal care. Your vagina deserves (and needs) more TLC than just splashing your normal body wash down there. This wash is made with only clean, natural, and plant-based ingredients, so you know you’re giving your vagina only the best. It’s intended to keep pH levels healthy, prevent infection, hydrate the area, and relieve irritation.

    Charcoal Whitening Mouth Rinse
Yes, there is such thing as non-toxic oral care, and yes, you should be using it. If you’re looking for whiter teeth but don’t want the price tag of in-office treatments or the toxins (and sensitivity!) from basic white strips, check out Moon. It uses activated charcoal to whiten and brighten instead of chemicals, and it contains 10 antioxidants and essential oils for fresher breath and oral health. Win, win, win!

    Body Oil
On your next visit to pick up faux greenery or cheap wine, do yourself a favor and add this non-toxic oil to your cart. This genius product is meant for anywhere hair meets skin, meaning sensitive areas like pubic hair and under arms, but it can also be used on legs, face, or anywhere you grow hair. If you prefer hair removal, the oil is intended to keep skin hydrated and prevent ingrown hairs. If you like to grow it out, the oil keeps course hair soft. It’s not only clean and good for sensitive skin, but it’s also dermatologically and gynecologically tested, so you know you’re treating your body well.

    The Seaweed Bath Co.
    Firming Detox Body Cream
Confession: I read somewhere that Kim Kardashian uses this lotion like seven years ago (way before KKW Beauty), so I obviously bought it and have not looked back since. All it takes to be a convert is to read the ingredients list (see: green coffee bean extract, green tea, hyaluronic acid). The superingredients work to deeply nourish the skin with antioxidants and help protect it from damage. I swear, you can feel the 65+ vitamins and minerals working within one use.

    Organic Warming Balm
Since you can probably already tell that I’m a Cora fan, let’s talk about their Period Balm. The powerful essential oils help soothe period symptoms like cramping or bloating, and the formula has a warming effect that works to treat inflammation and ease tension overtime. Think of it as the 2021 version of the heating pad or hot water bottle your mom used to place on your stomach when you had cramps.

    Hero Cosmetics
    Mighty Patch Original Acne Patches
If you have yet to hop on the pimple patch bandwagon, allow me to change your life. Basically, these little stickers stick onto a pimple or breakout and suck out all the gunk in six hours. Seriously. You’ll wake up and any zit will be gone (it’s like magic!). This one is cleaner than patches from other brands and is strong enough to stay on through a whole night (looking at you, restless sleepers).

Foaming Shave Gel with Aloe Vera
Full disclosure, I have opted for conditioner or body wash instead of shaving cream since I was 15 years old (I mean, does it really do anything?). That is, until I tried Flamingo. This clean shave gel is so creamy and moisturizing, it is now a staple in my shower. You’d be a fan from the scent alone.

Pure Epsom Bath Salt Soaking Solution
Every good wellness enthusiast has a bag of Epsom salt on hand. I like this one because it’s cheap, large (basically the Costco of bath salts), and only contains one ingredient: magnesium sulfate (AKA Epsom salt). The magnesium soaks into skin to help relieve muscle pain, tension in the body, and overall inflammation (my doctor recommended I try Epsom salt baths for help with anxiety!).

    Black Girl Sunscreen
Make It Matte Sunscreen – SPF 45
One of our go-to sunscreen brands of all time also happens to be paraben-free, vegan, and doesn’t contain any artificial fragrance (AKA chemicals that can irritate the skin but is found in many beauty products). This one contains shea butter and coconut oil, so you’re getting in some major hydration while protecting your gorgeous glow.

    Blackberry & Green Tea Deodorant
IDK who needs to hear this, but there might be a lot of sh*t in your deodorant. Do your research and talk to your doctor about recs that are right for you. But if you’re ready to switch to a cleaner kind, I suggest Native’s aluminum-free and paraben-free option. Sure, we love it for the long-lasting protection against odor and all the reasons to love (and need) deodorant, but we’re partial to Native because of the amazing scents. With hints of jasmine, cucumber, or citrus, you’ll subtly smell like you just came from a spa.

    The Honest Company
    Hand Sanitizer Spray
Who could’ve guessed a couple of years ago that hand sanitizer would be the #1 wellness must-have? Since 2020, I’ve kept a hand sanitizer in every purse I carry and use before every meal or after touching a public door handle (obsessive or smart, IDK). However, if you’re using hand sanitizer more (good job!), it could be drying out your hands. This one is just as effective (kills 99.9 percent of germs and bacteria) but doesn’t contain methanol (one of the main ingredients that leaves hands feeling dry) and contains aloe to help soothe and moisturize skin while you protect yourself from germs.

Bored of Your Wellness Routine? Here Are 8 TikTok Wellness Trends You Can Try at Home

Another day, another TikTok trend. I have a love-hate relationship with this app because it introduced me to feta pasta and pancake cereal, but I can also waste hours of my life scrolling through the explore page without even realizing any time has passed (I used to have hobbies!). Love it or hate it, there is some good that TikTok has brought to my life: updates to my wellness routine. If you are bored of your workout schedule, need new go-to recipes, or are just looking for some overall updates, the secret might just be the app that brought us the Renegade dance and whipped coffee. Bring out your main character energy and try one of these eight wellness trends from TikTok.

    1. 12-3-30 Workout

@laurengiraldoGame changer honestly♬ original sound – Lauren Giraldo

This workout method that went viral might just be your new go-to. Originally shared by influencer Lauren Giraldo, the “12-3-30” workout is as straightforward as it sounds: Set your treadmill to 12 percent incline and three miles per hour, and then walk for 30 minutes. As for why the method went so viral? TikTokers swear by it for a number of reasons, from being sustainable to helping them tone up. Especially if running feels intimidating or you don’t have more than half an hour to fit in a workout, you might want to hop on your treadmill and see what all the buzz is about.

    2. Liquid Chlorophyll

    @sakaralifeA must try springtime detoxing refresher ##sakaralife ##chlorophyll ##chlorophyllwater ##fyp ##plantbased♬ LoFi(860862) – skollbeats

Let me flex for a second and say that I’ve been a chlorophyll stan way before TikTok was a thing. Personally, I notice a huge difference in my skin and energy levels when adding drops of the green stuff into my water. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants, and liquid chlorophyll is a supplement you can take to get the antioxidants and nutrients from plant chlorophyll. For more information on chlorophyll, click here, and always talk to your doctor before adding a supplement to your routine.

    3. Cloud Bread

    @linqanaaa1 YEAR! ##foryoupage ##fypシ ##fyp ##itsanaaa ##myroutine ##foodietiktok ##cloudbread ##anniversary ##foodtrauma ##eggwhites ##nothinggoestowaste ##celebrating♬ Morning After – LLusion

I could watch TikToks of cloud bread all day long (and I seriously mean all day long). The DIY bread that’s made out of only egg whites and corn starch (and whatever other additives you want to adjust the flavor) is taking the internet by storm. Not only is it easy to make and falls under popular diets like paleo or keto, but it is also insanely satisfying to watch the egg whites get so freaking fluffy. Nutritionists and food-tokers have even been turning cloud bread into pizza by topping it with sauce and cheese or making DIY cupcakes by adding sugar to the batter.

    4. Push-Up Challenge

    @kev.the.nexusReposting one of my most viral videos! 😊 ##fitness ##kevthenexus ##foryou ##duet ##viral ##fyp ##plankchallenge ##workoutchallenge ##pushups♬ original sound – ᴀʟᴇx ʀᴀɢᴇ🐲

Leave it to social media to turn the exercise series you did in P.E. class into a full-blown viral challenge. Even Carrie Underwood tried it—and nailed it—so you know it’s good. Started by fitness trainer Kevin Edmonson, the challenge is basically following his moves (including push-ups, planks, and arm reaches) to the music and fitting in every push-up by the end of the song clip. If your workout routine is starting to feel mundane, millions of viewers and a killer song might be enough motivation to push yourself.

    5. Nature’s Cereal

    @natures_foodnature’s cereal ##fruit ##fruits ##share♬ original sound – 🥭Fruits & Leaves🍃

I love a fruit bowl as much as the next girl, but I never thought I’d go so far as to call a bowl of berries and pomegranate seeds with coconut water “cereal” (I love my Cheerios, OK). The trend started when a health blogger and content creator called his fruit bowl “nature’s cereal,” but the trend blew up when our queen Lizzo tried it for herself (and admitted she was addicted). Consider this trend wellness editor-approved because topping fruit with coconut water has become a go-to of mine (but TBH, I’d do anything to be more like Lizzo).

    6. Salad Jars

    @sweetpeasandsaffronSo here’s the deal with jar salads… 🥗 ##jarsalad ##mealprep ##lunchtime ##foodtiktok ##healthyrecipes ##saladtok ##foodtok♬ Say So (Instrumental Version) [Originally Performed by Doja Cat] – Elliot Van Coup

Watch your back, bowls: Salads have found a new home, and it’s way more attractive, convenient, and useful. Layering your salad ingredients in mason jars is trending, and it’s not just because it’s so Instagram-worthy. If you’re packing your lunch or prepping salads ahead of time, mason jars just make sense. Think about it: You can put wet ingredients on the bottom, and dry ingredients (like lettuce) on the top so they don’t get soggy. When you’re ready to eat, simply add dressing and shake. You’ll have a perfectly crisp salad—with evenly distributed dressing—every time.

    7. Hot Girl Walk

@cearakirkmy take on the ##hotgirlwalk! (Originally by hot girl @exactlyliketheothergirls but my spin on it 🤓) ##hotgirlsummer ##walk♬ Juless Edits – Shou

Megan Thee Stallion coined the term “Hot Girl Summer” in 2019, and in 2021, we have ourselves the “Hot Girl Walk.” Spoiler alert: It has absolutely nothing to do with what you look like and everything to do with confidence. The idea is basically to add four-mile walks into your routine to not only get some exercise and fresh air but also to work on your confidence. Many fans even call it a manifestation practice. For the entirety of the walk, you’re supposed to think about three things: what you’re grateful for, how hot you are, and things that you want to achieve. Now that’s a walk I can get behind.

    8. Becoming “That Girl”

    @.becomethat.girlbecome that girl with me. we start tomorrow. follow to join our journey. ##thatgirl ##fyp ##4u ##foryoupage ##follow ##like ##aesthetic ##monday.♬ Seaside_demo by SEB – SEB

I have a love-hate relationship with TikTok, and I also have a love-hate relationship with the “Becoming ‘That Girl’” trend. You might have heard sound bites saying “this is your sign to become that girl” or seen a series of clips showing a glow-up to “that girl.” So who is “that girl” and why is TikTok obsessed with her? While many “Becoming That Girl” TikToks portray waking up early, going to the gym, drinking green smoothies, and meditating, I think “that girl” is really just the best version of ourselves, whatever that looks like. While many TikToks portray a certain type of “girl,” try this trend by becoming the best version of you, no matter when you wake up, what you eat, or how you take care of your mental health. Identify what makes you happiest in life and then practice those things every day. And if you happen to record the process for a 30-second TikTok that goes viral? It’ll be an added bonus.

Watching “Nine Perfect Strangers?” Here’s How To Recreate a Wellness Retreat at Home

Is it just me, or is everybody bingeing Nine Perfect Strangers? The thriller, based at a remote wellness retreat, is Hulu’s latest buzz-worthy series that fans can’t get enough of. I’m going to be honest: I have not yet watched the show or read the book (it’s on my list, I swear!), but I’m assuming that this is not a wellness retreat that you’d opt into, based on the eerie tone and the fact that The Everygirl’s resident lover of all things spooky, Maddie, is a huge fan (something bad has got to happen). However, the concept of a wellness retreat (not in a thriller storyline) sounds appealing, especially after a stressful couple of years.
I can’t speak for Nicole Kidman, but the purpose of going on a wellness retreat is to spend uninterrupted time focusing on your physical and mental health. Imagine temporarily giving up your hectic life and busy schedule for sunrise yoga sessions, reiki healing, deep tissue massages, meditation lectures, and health food so good, it’s won awards. No matter what actually happens at Tranquillum House, the show had viewers Googling where and how they can attend a wellness retreat.
However, leaving your life for a few days and spending a hefty amount of money isn’t always feasible. But good news to those of you who are wellness-retreat curious (or just need a damn break): You don’t even have to leave your home to reap the benefits of a trendy health retreat. Read on for six steps to get the Nine Perfect Strangers experience from the comfort of your own home (or you know, all the good parts before Nicole Kidman gets really creepy).

    Source: Hulu

    Plan ahead
To get the full experience of a serene retreat away from busy schedules, to-do lists, and distractions, you’re going to have to plan ahead to get rid of those busy schedules, to-do lists, and distractions. Start by decluttering your space (more on that below), let friends or family know you’ll be off the grid for the next day or two, and get any chores done ahead of time so you can fully relax. Also, plan out a schedule to follow or meals to make, just like any other wellness retreat would have for you (as for what to put on the schedule or menu, more on that below!). Most importantly, plan to go tech-free while you’re on your “wellness retreat” (you don’t want an Instagram notification or scroll through TikTok to ruin your meditative bliss).

Turn your home into a sanctuary
The main reason a retreat is so appealing is because of the environment. You’re not going home to dirty dishes, screaming kids, or a pile of laundry—leaving your home gives you the chance to escape normal life for a little and focus solely on your well-being. Even if leaving home is not an option, you can still update your environment for similar benefits. Once you’ve decluttered and cleaned up, orient sofas or chairs toward windows (for more exposure to nature, even if nature is the view of the building across from you), add plants and greenery throughout your space, play with aromatherapy through diffusers and candles, and set the scene with calming music.

    Source: Hulu

    “Attend” classes online
Wellness retreats often mean early morning yoga or a meditation session before bed. Just because you don’t have a sunrise view or an instructor standing in front of you does not mean you can’t schedule meditation, yoga, and mindfulness classes (without the hefty wellness retreat price tags). Check out YouTube for a variety of wellness-related classes, lectures, and sessions, or try a service like obé fitness for workout classes, yoga stretches, and meditations all in one place. For extra points, try something totally new, whether you want to amp it up with an online fitness bootcamp or do a 60-minute yoga session with poses you’ve never tried. Wellness retreats mean new experiences, so trying something different from your usual workout or meditation app will help separate your at-home retreat from normal life.

    Have a DIY spa session
Let’s be honest: The very best part of a wellness retreat is the back-to-back luxurious spa appointments (and absolutely no guilt spending hours of your day to pamper yourself). To reap the same benefits from home, you don’t need a live-in masseuse or facialist on call. Start with a relaxing bubble bath (or luxurious shower) and apply a face and hair mask, and then go into facial massage, dry brushing, and lymphatic drainage to treat yourself from head-to-toe. In fact, there are dozens of beauty treatments you can do in the comfort of your own home (aesthetician not required). Check out 30 of them here. If you’re interested in other wellness treatments like acupuncture, cryotherapy, or aromatherapy, check out how I tried them at home here.

    Source: Hulu

    Get outdoors
Retreats are typically located in a place surrounded by nature to create a calm environment and to help attendees disengage. Nature provides many benefits and will help you feel totally at peace. To get the benefits for free, find a nearby hike to schedule into your retreat schedule. If hiking isn’t your thing or you don’t have trails near you, taking a walk through a nearby park or spending some time sitting at the beach will give you the same effects. If you’re more interested in the wellness retreats that are more active than relaxing, plan some more outdoor activities, like kayaking at a nearby lake or booking an outdoor workout class near you.

    Make your own menu
And now for the most important part: food. Wellness retreats around the world have a slew of impressive menus that promise high-quality and tasty vegan, farm-to-table, gluten-free, or totally clean meals. Instead of buying a lot of fruits and veggies and hoping for the best, plan out a menu ahead of time like any good wellness retreat would offer upon your arrival. Explore plant-heavy recipes that taste good and make you feel good, and consider meal prepping in advance so you don’t disrupt your R&R whenever you get hungry. Also, you can take this opportunity to improve your cooking skills. Look up online cooking classes like a DIY sushi class or watch a video to get assistance following a more complicated recipe.

Bored With Your Mornings? These Products Will Make You Excited to Get Out of Bed

Last year, I overhauled my morning routine in the universal attempt to get out of the rut that was 2020. I started journaling, DIYing celery juice, and stretching before the workday started. For a while, this morning makeover made me feel like a brand new woman. The journaling helped me stay motivated, the celery juice helped my digestion, and stretching helped my body wake up. But after a while, these things just started to feel, well, boring. Journaling seemed uninspiring, celery juice started tasting bland, and stretching felt like a chore. The truth is that sometimes, even when habits and routines are good for us, they can start to feel mundane.
Mornings are hard, and getting out of your warm, cozy bed for the stressful day that awaits you is even harder. But we all deserve to wake up every morning feeling energized, excited, and happy. The trick (besides getting a full seven to nine hours of sleep the night before): making your mornings a little more special. If your usual morning routine feels boring, shop the products below that will make you excited to get out of bed (no celery juice necessary).

    Equilibria
    Dynamic Roller Duo
These genius little rollers are my secret weapon for getting out of bed in the morning or staying energized throughout the day. If I need a little more energy (like right before a big meeting or if I’m feeling an afternoon slump), I pull out the Energy Roller from my desk drawer for an instant boost. I also keep the Calming Roller by my bed to use before I sleep or whenever I’m feeling anxious or stressed. Massaging it into my temples or on pulse points can make a huge difference in my mood, thanks to 75mg of CBD per roller and essential oils. Both of these rollers work on a topical level to relieve pressure points, regulate mood, and ease topical discomfort. Trust me, you’re going to want both.
Use code “theeverygirl” for 20% off your first order!

    14-Cup Coffee Maker
If the only thing you look forward to when your alarm clock goes off is your first cup of coffee, this one’s for you. Whether you can’t function before you’ve had it or the first sip is the best part of your morning, coffee is a good reason to get out of bed. Try this programmable machine that you set to start brewing right before your alarm goes off, so there’s less time between the minute your eyes open and your very first sip of the day.

    Back Seam Skinny Pants
Reality check: Of course you’re not going to want to get out of bed if you have to change from cozy PJs to stiff jeans or uncomfortable trousers. Whether you’re back in the office or still rocking workwear while working from home, these ankle pants are cozy enough to feel like loungewear but chic enough to pair with any button-up for even your most serious meeting days. Order a few pairs because they’re all you’re going to want to wear.

    Green Tablets
TBH, while celery juice is still a practice I love, the ritual started feeling so boring because it just took a lot of work (I mean, homemade green juice every morning? I’m exhausted just thinking about it!). If you’re like me and love the feeling of taking care of your body but hate the effort it takes, I have the answer for you. 8Greens is an Everygirl editor favorite because of the delicious taste, amazing nutrients, and plant ingredients. Add to a cup of water and enjoy!

Hair Dryer & Volumizer Hot Air Brush
What’s more motivating to get out of bed than knowing you’re going to have a great hair day? Even if you don’t have time to fit in a full face mask or bubble bath in the morning (who does?), you can still take some time to pamper yourself by getting ready for your day. This hot air brush is not only easier and less steps than a full blow dry and curling routine, but you’ll also have that just-got-a-blowout look throughout the rest of your day. Now that’s worth waking up for.

    Youth To The People
15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Energy Serum
Speaking of pampering yourself, if you don’t look forward to your morning skincare routine, it’s time to make some changes. This clean and sustainable serum contains a high concentration of vitamin C (hello, glow!), but it more importantly contains a clean caffeine to wake up and energize the face. Think of it like a cup of coffee for your skin (because it deserves coffee too!). Apply under a moisturizer and SPF for a skincare routine that will get you out of bed.

    Hamilton Beach
    Breakfast Sandwich Maker
Let’s be real: The best part of mornings is breakfast. If you’re a smoothie-on-the-go kind of girl or have the same avocado toast every morning, no wonder your mornings are boring. You can DIY the breakfast sandwich of your dreams, thanks to one easy, simple step. Trust me, the smell of eggs, bacon, and english muffins alone will be enough to get you out of bed.

    Milk Frother
One of the changes in my morning routine that has stuck is frothing my creamer. It sounds like such a simple step, but frothed milk immediately turns a cold cup of coffee into a decadent latte or delicious cappuccino. My coffee is no longer a necessity—it’s my favorite morning luxury.

    Le Moderne Wellness Journal
Tired of the same boring planner and to-do lists? Same. When you sit down to write out your to-do list and create your schedule, make it a ritual you’ll look forward to instead of another mundane moment in your day. This wellness journal helps you track things like sleep, meals, and self-care, and it also gives you space to gratitude journal and record feelings for a practice that’s much more inspiring than “all-staff meeting at 1 p.m.” or “finish folding laundry.”

    Build Your Own Cozy Set
Getting out of bed is often so hard because it also means getting out of your cozy, comfy pajamas. So what if your outfit for the day was even more cozy and comfy than your old camp T-shirt? If you’re working from home or lounging around the house on the weekends, lay out this dreamy set for an OOTD that will feel better than any pajamas you’ve ever had.

    Amazon | JALL
    Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm
If waking up feels more painful than actually getting out of bed, the fix might be as simple as changing your alarm clock. Forget the annoying ringers on your iPhone or sound machine. No matter when you wake up, you can wake up with the sun, thanks to this soothing and gentle light that mimics the sunrise to wake you up naturally and peacefully.

    Frank Body
    Original Coffee Scrub
If you’re one of those people who don’t feel fully awake until you take a shower, make sure your shower routine is enough to get you excited for the mornings. PSA: Morning showers should not just be a quick shampoo. All it takes is a minute to pamper yourself from head to toe. This non-toxic scrub not only feels luxurious on the body, but it’s also made with coffee grounds so you can get your caffeine fix before you even brush your teeth.

    Magic Spoon
    Grain Free Cereal
Think about when you were a kid. What was the one thing that got you out of bed before a long day of pop quizzes and multiplication? That’s right, Fruit Loops or Cap’n Crunch. Since you’re now a grown adult and know better than to call sugary cereal a nutritious meal, you can still get the excitement of a tasty bowl of cereal (that won’t give you a sugar crash) with to Magic Spoon. With clean ingredients, high protein, and no gluten, grains, soy, sugar alcohols, or anything artificial, your childhood favorite is better than ever.

If all else fails and no breakfast, beauty product, or cozy clothing can get you excited about your mornings, look to inspo from the experts. 6 Things You Should Do for Your Health in Your 20s

I’d like to make a case that your 20s are the weirdest decade of your life. All of a sudden, you’re all on your own (I miss you, mom!), trying to get a job or score a promotion, spending any off-time on your social life (FOMO is real), and maybe (just maybe) being in a relationship or saving up for those major purchases like a house, a kid, or a dog (vet bills are no joke). Who has the time and money to prioritize all the different health tips out there too? Plus, we’re told that we’re “so young” and have “nothing to worry about” (even when it definitely doesn’t feel that way).
While your 20s should absolutely be enjoyed (just like every other decade of your life, FYI), it’s also a crucial time to revaluate your health and establish habits that will help keep you healthy as you get older. Think of it like an investment: What you do for your body now will not only make you feel your best, but will also help your future self be healthier too. Read on for six things women in their 20s should be doing for their health.

    1. Prioritize your reproductive health
    Source: Modern Fertility
Your 20s are weird because everyone is in a different place: You may have some friends who already have two kids while other friends just booked a one-way ticket to Thailand after quitting their job on a split decision. But one thing we all have in common, no matter what’s in our five-year plan, is that knowledge is power. Whether having kids is a part of your future or not, knowing your body is crucial for health. The Modern Fertility Hormone Test is the most comprehensive hormone test you can take at home for a fraction of the cost, and it comes with personalized reports, 1:1 consultation with a fertility nurse, and a community of people to lean on for support. Modern Fertility believes that knowing your fertility early on is the key to owning your future.
    Source: Modern Fertility
Real talk: whether you are considering having kids or not, Modern Fertility can get you the information you need to be proactive about your reproductive health. The test will give you insight into your ovarian reserve (how many eggs you have), potential success rates for IVF and egg-freezing, and can help identify red flags that may indicate a hormone imbalance (1 in 10 women suffer from PCOS.)
Think of Modern Fertility like every 20-something’s best friend: it will help you plan for the future you want, and be there to support you every step of the way. The test is also HSA/FSA eligible and shipping is always free. Get 10% off your order HERE.

    2. Schedule regular doctor appointments
    Source: Ksenia Chernaya | Pexels
Whether you’re an older Gen Z or a younger millennial, you might not be in the habit of scheduling regular doctor visits. Maybe your mom always scheduled those appointments for you until you turned 18 so it’s just not a habit, or maybe you let busy work life and an overbooked calendar delay those appointments because there’s no pressing issues right now. PSA: Health is not something you focus on when you’re forced to. Preventive health ensures your body is as healthy as possible, and regular visits are important to stay on top of symptoms or underlying issues you don’t even know are there (yes, even as young as your 20s).
You need a physical exam once a year, but you should also see a gynecologist every year if you have a vagina, a dermatologist every few months (depending on your family history, concerns, etc.), a dentist every six months, and any other specialists as needed. Get in the habit of scheduling all appointments needed for the next 12 months at once. Dedicate some time this week to make all the appointments you’ll need over the next year, and set up a system to make sure to keep regular appointments in the future (like booking the next appointment at the doctor’s office or scheduling the same chunk of time in a year from now to make those appointments).

    3. Take your mental health seriously
    Source: The Everygirl
The good news is that our generation prioritizes mental health more than any generation before, thanks to normalizing therapy (thank you, #therapytiktok!) and moving away from burnout culture. But just because it’s “common” to feel anxious and burned out does not mean you should feel anxious or burned out. You have routines for your physical health (read: eating your veggies, working out, and annual doctor visits), and you should have an established routine for your mental health too. Whether that means weekly therapy sessions, daily meditation, regular tech-free time, or leaving a job that’s depleting you, prioritize mental health above all else. Oh, and don’t wait until you’re totally burned out or suffering with anxiety or depression to ask for help and make some changes. Work with a therapist and instill daily practices to avoid getting to that point in the first place.

    4. Eat for your health
    Source: Ekaterina Bolovtsova | Pexels
Maybe it was when you graduated college and realized cafeteria food and binge-drinking wine out of bags just wouldn’t cut it anymore, or maybe as you got older, you noticed your body doesn’t bounce back from a McDonald’s meal or pitcher of spicy margaritas like it used to. No matter what the catalyst is, many people start to reevaluate the way that they’re eating when they’re in their 20s. However, just because your body is changing and reacting to food differently does not mean you should be eating for weight loss. Instead, think of every bite you take as an investment in your future self.
What you’re eating now will impact your health in 10, 20, or 30 years. Instead of just eating “healthy” so that your body can look a certain way, start eating to boost heart health (like leafy greens and avocados), keep your energy levels increased (like bananas or dark chocolate), or improve overall longevity (like cruciferous vegetables and berries). In other words, eat your fruits and veggies because they’ll help you feel good, not just because they help you look good. It’s certainly never too soon to start eating for your future self, so get in the habit now of using food as a tool to stay your healthiest as you get older.

    5. Wear SPF every time you go outside
    Source: @neutrogena
If SPF is something you only pull out before a beach day, we need to talk. Sun protection is a crucial part of overall health, but it’s one of the most overlooked. Sun damage (including skin cancer) can happen anytime you’re exposed to the sun, not just if you get a bad burn after a day outside. If you’re not yet in the habit of applying SPF every time you leave the house, keep a face sunscreen by the front door with your keys and wallet so you remember to put on a quick layer before running out the door or keep a bottle in your car for easy reapplication. Of course, sun protection is most important for protecting against serious sun damage like skin cancer, but it’s also a crucial time to prevent other forms of sun damage like wrinkles or hyperpigmentation that increase as we age. Trust me, you’d much rather take preventative measures now to protect your gorgeous skin than fight the effects years from now.

    6. Get a good night’s sleep (every night)
    Source: Alaina Kaczmarski
Long gone are the days of regular clubbing until 6 a.m. or pulling an all-nighter for an exam. Sure, we might have a fun night out here and there, a special event, or an extra heavy workday that will give us a shorter night of sleep, but I stopped being able to enjoy any time spent out past 11 p.m. the day I turned 25. The reality is that sleep cannot be a second thought or a welcomed bonus like it might have been in your teenage and college years. Start prioritizing sleep (and quality sleep) every night. Turn off Netflix at a reasonable time and have a go-to wind down routine that you prioritize over the next episode of Outer Banks (as hard as it is to turn it off!). Especially as we get older, sleep is crucial for keeping the body as healthy as possible and our energy levels high, so prioritize getting a full seven to nine hours of sleep every night.

8 Ways I Prepare (And Recover) From a Night Out

There was a time in my life when I used to put on full glam on a Tuesday at 9 p.m., hit a pre-party get-together at 10:30 p.m., and make it to the bar at the ungodly hour of midnight. After three hours of dancing the night away, replacing my sweat losses with vodka sodas, and ending the night at Taco Bell, I’d get a mere four hours of sleep and spring up for my 9 a.m. class chipper, bright-eyed, and ready to ace my Biochem exam—no hangover recovery plan (or even need for one) in sight. Now (six years post-grad), I’ll have two and a half glasses of wine while watching Love Island (U.K.) and be down for the count for at least three whole business days.
While I’m still down to celebrate a job promotion with a friend, pour a pitcher of spicy margaritas to kick off a G.N.O., or stay up past my bedtime to catch a live concert, my prep and recovery for a late night out is a lot more curated than it used to be. Bouncing back from dehydration, lack of sleep, and high-sodium food (Crunchwrap Supremes will be the death of me) is no easy feat, but fear not! If you can’t keep up quite like you used to, these recovery hacks have your back:

    Source: GoHydrate

    1. Pre-hydrate
Before a night out, get ahead of the game and make hydrating a priority. Sure, water is a good start, but if we’re not in the mood to be laying in bed all day tomorrow, we need all of the help we can get. When we know we’ll be dancing the night away, walking in heels across town to get to the next rooftop bar, or basking in the sunset while enjoying a margarita on a downtown patio, we reach for GoHydrate, an all-natural hydration drink that tastes incredible (if you haven’t tried their cherry limeade packet yet, you are missing out) and delivers five electrolytes immediately to the body. Unlike other hydration packets, these have zero sugar, the added benefit of vitamin D, and only 80 mg of sodium per packet, which is a win in our book.

    Go Hydrate
    Variety Box
Use code EVERYGIRL for 15% off of your first GoHydrate variety pack!

Even when you’re not drinking alcohol, staying hydrated is crucial for feeling your best and keeping your body healthy. Staying hydrated can help with everything from skin glow, to feeling more toned to helping the body detox properly, and, you know, just helping every organ in the body run properly. GoHydrate contains super ingredients like electrolytes (such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium) to immediately hydrate on a deeper level than water alone. Trust me: your body feels the difference when you’re properly hydrated.

    2. Assemble a bedside recovery kit
The last thing that you’ll want to be doing when waking up exhausted after a night out is to go on a treasure hunt around your house to find items to bring you back to life. Before you go out for an evening, assemble a bedside recovery kit so that you can start nursing yourself back to reality from the comfort of your own bed. Here are our go-to items to have in our arsenal:

    3. Practice a 1:1 water to drink ratio
Being a hydrated baddie is always on our to-do list, and it’s even more important when we’re drinking sugary drinks and drinks that contain alcohol. Getting in the habit of alternating glasses of water with your non-water drink of choice, ordering drinks that are blended with ice, opting for light over dark liquors, and diluting liquor with water are great ways to keep up with water loss while tackling an evening of activities.

    4. Take ibuprofen before bed and again in the morning
If you can remember to take ibuprofen before bed in an effort to stay ahead of the aches and pains that come from drinking, dancing into the late hours of the night, running across town to hit up your favorite pizza joint before it closes, and/or consuming mass amounts of sugar and dairy, you will thank yourself later. Ibuprofen (AKA Advil or Motrin) is an over-the-counter, nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drug that can help tackle the aches and pains that come with a night out. On the other hand, acetaminophen (Tylenol) should be avoided, as it’s metabolized in the liver, which already may be working overtime if you indulged in a few alcoholic beverages. Before taking any type of supplement or medication, consult with your doctor about which over-the-counter options are right for you.

    5. Catch up on hydration in the morning
No matter how much you may have hydrated before, during, or after a night out, there’s still plenty of opportunity to rehydrate when you wake up. When you open your eyes to a dry mouth, a bit of a headache, and missed calls from your DoorDash delivery driver, reach for a bottle of water mixed with your favorite GoHydrate flavor. With all-natural ingredients, Instant Hydration Technology that delivers electrolytes immediately to the body, and only 80mg of sodium, GoHydrate is an obvious choice for a morning where your tank is on E.

    6. Take ginger for nausea and eat easily digestible foods
If you’re someone who gets wildly nauseated after a late night out, you’re not alone. Being nauseated can be a huge barrier to rehydrating and keeping up with your nutrition, which can be detrimental to getting through a massive recovery day. Ginger is a safe and effective way to treat nausea and is such a game-changer to have on hand if you’re looking to settle your stomach after a few alcoholic beverages, a lot of sugar, or too much dairy. We love reaching for ginger chews, ginger gum, ginger tea, or grating fresh ginger to add to a smoothie or hot water. If you’re not feeling up to eating a big meal, opt for simple, easily digestible carbs like toast, bagels, crackers, soup, scrambled eggs, or potatoes that will help raise blood sugar while being gentle on the stomach.

    7. Take a nap
It’s no secret that a night out and sleep don’t mix well. In addition to being out and about and abandoning your normal bedtime, the not-so-healthy choices that come with it (drinking alcohol and eating a lot of sugar) delay sleep onset, cause sleep disturbances, and decrease sleep quality. So, in addition to being dehydrated and possibly hypoglycemic, day-after-drinking symptoms are further exacerbated by lack of sleep. If you can find time in your day after you hydrate and eat a bit, take a nap to give your body the gift of some much-needed rest.

    8. Gua sha or ice roll for puffiness
After a night of succumbing to sodium in the form of eating some of our favorite foods (pizza, tacos, or ramen, just to name a few), our faces are always at peak puffiness the morning after a night out. We love reaching for our favorite gua sha stones, jade rollers, and ice rollers to help us de-puff when our faces are holding on to water after a night of fun-filled activities.

Remember: Drinking can be fun, but it can also be incredibly dangerous and addicting. If you or a loved one is experiencing alcoholism or alcohol abuse, you can call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration’s 24-hour hotline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for treatment options and resources.

The Wellness Hacks I Love to Start My Day With

My relationship with mornings has not always been chipper. As someone who starts the workday early, my mornings typically looked like rolling out of bed, brushing my teeth, and opening my laptop (#WFHlife, am I right?). But I quickly noticed that even if I was starting work on time (and had my teeth brushed and ready to go, might I add!), I lacked energy and motivation throughout the day. By the time the workday was over, you can bet I went from my desk to the couch and watched Netflix until bedtime. The truth is that your mornings dictate your entire day. What you prioritize in the mornings can snowball into your habits, routines, and choices until bedtime. So I ditched the roll-out-of-bed-and-open-laptop routine and transformed my mornings as a way to transform my life. And guess what? It worked. Here are five of my favorite go-to morning wellness tips that have changed my productivity, energy, and motivation throughout the entire day.

    1. Using a CBD Roller

Scent is a powerful thing. Just like lavender helps you relax before bed, scents like peppermint, jasmine, and lemon can help you feel energized. Or at least that’s what I’ve found after using my Equilibria Energizing Roller religiously for the past six months. With a combination of peppermint, sweet orange, geranium, spearmint, litsea, and full-spectrum CBD, this product will become your go-to for starting your day the right way. I keep my Energizing Roller in my desk drawer and roll it onto my temples and wrists before opening my laptop every morning. The super ingredients help keep me focused, calm, and energized, and having the same ritual first thing every day helps get me in the mindset for productivity.

    2. Manifest journaling

We all know and love gratitude journaling for boosting mental health or fostering healthier relationships. I stan some gratitude and personally swear that it is the secret to a happy life, but I like to take my morning journaling one step further. I always start with a list of three things I’m grateful for (which most often includes my dog and coffee), but I also spend some time writing about my best self. Trust me, manifestation is real, people!
I’ll either reflect on my best self (What are her routines like? How does she work out? What does she eat? How does she spend her evenings?) or reevaluate my goals (What will make me happy? Are my current habits helping me get there? What do I really want in life?). Even spending just five minutes thinking about what I truly want and who I want to be reminds me of my life’s big picture and helps prevent me from getting stuck in everyday stressors and to-do lists. Plus, there’s nothing quite as motivating as being reminded of your dreams (which, as Glennon Doyle says, is the blueprint of our lives, not a fantasy).

    3. Using skincare as self-care

I consider myself a skincare queen: I have separate drawers for my serums and moisturizers, always put on essences before eye cream, and never leave the house without (non-toxic) SPF. But my morning skincare routine is more than an effort to clear pores and prevent wrinkles; it’s a moment before I start my busy days to center myself. My six-step skincare routine serves as a reminder to not rush through the day and get straight to work. I turn my skincare routines into ~moments~ by playing a podcast or music, taking time to massage in product, and repeating an affirmation in the mirror. No, my morning skincare is not just another must-do item on the list, it’s a wellness hack.

    4. Eating a big bowl of fruit

Ever since changing my mindset to be about adding as many nutrients as possible into my diet, not only did my relationship with food change, but so has my body. Breakfasts for me used to be green smoothies or eggs and avocado toast. While those are both amazing meal options, fruit was never really a part of my life besides the occasional apple crumble or strawberry smoothie. When I learned about how much fiber and antioxidants were in fruit, I found a new zest for kiwis, berries, and papaya, and now I crave a big bowl of fruit first thing every morning. Whether or not my go-to green smoothie or avocado toast is part of breakfast, I always start with whatever fruit I have in my fridge. After I began to eat fruits to start my day, I’ve become more energized and have better digestion.

    5. Getting outside

Full disclosure, of all my other wellness hacks, this one was more so forced upon me than a chosen lifestyle change. Getting a puppy about a year ago changed my life in a lot of ways. Besides the obvious unconditional love and $$$ on vet visits and dog food, one of those changes is that I’m getting outside more, including first thing in the morning (nature calls!). B.L. (“Before Louie”), I went for days without stepping outside. My energy levels have dramatically improved since getting five minutes of sunlight after I wake up, and I’m no longer groggy in the mornings (and afternoon slumps are a lot fewer after a lunchtime dog walk too). Whether you’re walking your own dog or just walking yourself (or sipping coffee on your balcony–whatever floats your boat), start your day with a little time outdoors, and it just might change your life too.
