The Hot Girl Walk Essentials Our Editors Swear By

If I had a dollar every time that the words “too good to be true” traveled across my mind on any given TikTok binge, I’d have enough money to fund an all-inclusive Croatian vacation for me and 14 of my closest friends. From the winged liner hack that left me unironically resembling Julia Fox’s Paris-Fashion-Week-with-Kanye stint to the time someone swore that balsamic vinegar and sparkling water would serve as a healthy-yet-tasty alternative to Coca-Cola (many regrets), I’ve had my fair share of eye rolls. But if there’s one TikTok trend that took me by surprise and actually improved my life, it’s the infamous Hot Girl Walk.
The Hot Girl Walk is a multitasker’s dream. There’s no better way to get your steps in, soak up some vitamin D, listen to a mood-boosting playlist, catch up on your favorite podcast, phone a friend, or get outside on a work-from-home day than by putting your favorite sneaks on and getting after it. If you’re looking for a low-impact way to get fit, improve your mental health, spend some time with yourself, and reconnect with the world around you, the HGW is the cure. Here are the Hot Girl Walk essentials our editors rely on:

    SeaChange LTT Sneakers
When you’re walking for miles on end, there are two necessary shoe features that come to mind: comfy and cooling. With a cushioned memory foam footbed, soft, buttery smooth vegan corn leather, and cooling channels to promote airflow, these sneaks from SeaVees check all of our boxes. And it doesn’t hurt that they’re easy on the eyes.
Use code EVERYGIRL for 20% off of your first purchase at SeaVees + enter our giveaway HERE to enter to win two pairs of SeaVees shoes of your choice, free!

    Adjustable Fanny Pack
What’s a HGW without a belt bag that’ll help you keep all of your knick-knacks on your person—and look good doing it? We love this one from Amazon because it’s affordable, can be dressed down for a hot girl walk or up for a Sunday brunch with the gals, and it’s adjustable to guarantee the perfect fit every time.

    Retro Sunglasses
As much as we love strolling on a sunny day, a blinding sunrise or sunset is a lot prettier to take in when you’re wearing a pair of sunnies that help to make the view a lot less painful. Protect your eyeballs without breaking the bank with this two-pack of retro sunglasses and thank us later.

    Airpods
For your tunes, the latest and greatest episode from your podcast of choice, or getting all of the tea from your bestie, a pair of Airpods is the way to go. As much as we love a pair of noise-canceling, over-the-ear headphones, these in-ear ones help us to enjoy our audio while still being aware of our surroundings.

    Obé x Bala Bangles
    Adjustable Ankle Weights
If you’re looking to add a bit of a challenge to your next walk, look no further than these adjustable ankle or wrist weights from Bala. Bala Bangles are an editor-fav for good reason: They’re sleek, fit super comfortably, come in so many colors, and help us to add a (very light and reasonable) bit of burn. 10/10 recommend.

    Audiobook Subscription
Between new Netflix launches, pending book-to-movie or show adaptations, and the startling amount of Love Island (UK) episodes I need to catch up on, my TBR list has been absolutely suffering. I started listening to audiobooks on my Hot Girl Walks to help me to carve out some time to catch up on my ever-growing reading list, and it’s been such a game-changer. I get so caught up in the storyline that I end up walking for way farther than I anticipated which is always a pleasant surprise.

    La Roche-Posay
    Tinted Mineral Sunscreen
The perfect HGW sunscreen exists, and it’s this tinted mineral sunscreen from La-Roche-Posay. If you’re worried about running into your ex when you’re out and about and want a subtle, effortless glow, this stuff is the way to go. This sunscreen is my personal favorite because it’s tinted and brings life to my face without being too illuminating (sorry Glow Screen, I just can’t do it), and helps me to protect my face while still feeling super lightweight.

    Collapsable Water Bottle
There’s nothing that can ruin a HGW quite like having to hold something in your hand while walking for miles, so if you’re looking for a water bottle that’ll be ready when you are, consider this collapsable one from Amazon. It’s super affordable and folds so tightly that you’ll be able to fit it into your fanny pack until you pass a refill station when you’re ready to fill up. Once it’s full, it does have a strap, so it can hang from your index finger which is a 10/10 solution in my book.

    Matching Set
No HGW is made complete without a matching set—sorry, I don’t make the rules. If you want to fully dive into the aesthetic surrounding the trend, this is a necessary add that will cary you from the couch to your nearest hiking trail and beyond. This ribbed tank-meets-sports-bra set is high quality, (I’m so sorry, I have to say it) buttery soft, and totally worth the investment. Plus, we love that you can choose separate sizes for your top and bottoms—tell us why all sets aren’t sold this way!

    Portable Charger
It never fails that when I decide to go on my HGW after dinner, my phone is near death and threatening to turn off mid-walk—which is neither fun nor safe. I got this portable charger last month and absolutely love that it’s compact and doesn’t require a separate cord to plug into your phone. It’s been such a simple add to my routine that has made my life infinitely better, and I recommend it to everyone I know.

5 Inexpensive Ways To Become a Pilates Girl at Home

There are trends that come and go (and should stay in the past—looking at you, sweater vests), then there are those that were so good that they come full circle. And if we’re talking about the feel-good world of wellness, there’s one workout that falls in the latter category. Re-enter: Pilates. ICYMI, it’s made a major comeback, and for good reason. Making its debut in the 1920s as a form of rehabilitation, Pilates is a low-impact workout that emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and mind-body connection. But don’t underestimate its effectiveness—it packs a punch.
It counts celebs like Jennifer Aniston and Hailey Bieber as devotees, and there’s no denying that they’re #fitspo. But Pilates isn’t just for A-listers with endless funds. While it’s traditionally performed on a reformer machine at fitness spots, you can easily adapt the discipline with just a mat. The best part other than firing up your core and getting a full-body experience? You can get your Pilates fix on a budget and in your very own dedicated gym space (AKA your living room), and we’re here to tell you how. Read on for five ways to affordably practice Pilates at home.

    1. Take Pilates classes online
Sure, you can flex your Pilates muscles at one of the many dedicated studios, but if the last couple of years has taught us anything, it’s that we can sweat it out with the best of them from the comfort of our own homes (and save some dough). Not sure where to start? Look no further than online fitness platform obé Fitness. Whether you have a few pieces of gear on hand or there’s no hand weight in sight, they’ve got you covered. You can filter obé’s Pilates workouts based on no equipment or what you do have. Only have a few minutes to get your body moving? Don’t sweat it (I can’t promise that you won’t break one though). obé has live and on-demand class offerings that range from five minutes to 60.
What’s more, you can plank and leg-lift anywhere—from your bedroom to your balcony in Italy—with your favorite instructors cheering you on. No joke—you get first-rate instruction and the energy of a group fitness class from your digs. And if you want to take it up a notch, you have the option to combine Pilates with other types of workouts (think: HIIT, sculpt, and yoga) to get the best of both worlds. While in-person Pilates memberships can set you back a couple hundred dollars each month, you can stick to your hot girl summer reserve doing Pilates in your humble abode using code TEG50 for a 7-day free trial + 50% off your first month of obé!

    2. Invest in affordable Pilates equipment or use what you already have
A solid Pilates workout doesn’t require any props, but if you want to level up and add variety to your sweat sessions, consider stocking up on a few pieces of equipment or find alternatives around the house.
    Mat
The must-have accessory to have within reach? A trusty mat. With the wealth of choices out there, you could have one for every day of the week, every mood, and every matching set (if you want to be extra). Opt for a thicker one with a good grip to give added support when you’re doing your Teasers and Side Bends.
For an easy mat back-up, pull a few towels or blankets out of your linen closet and layer them up depending on the amount of support you need.

    Mini Pilates ball
Don’t be fooled by the size and weight of this add-on. After a few minutes with it, you’ll feel muscles you never knew you had. Use it between your thighs to activate your pelvic floor or underneath your tailbone to make your core exercises more challenging.
Not ready to commit to the Pilates ball? Have no fear. Grab a throw pillow, put it between your thighs, and get to work!

    Sliders (AKA gliders or discs)
I’m going to bet you’ll develop a love-hate relationship with these guys. The closest thing to mimicking movements done on a reformer, gliders make it easy to slide your feet or knees out, in, and sideways while engaging your core.
You know those old towels you keep on hand for “just-in-case” moments? Well, now is the time to put them to good use. Substitute them for the sliders and clean your floors while you’re at it (it’s a clear win-win). And if you have a carpet-only sitch, swap in paper plates.

    Weights
Whether you go the hand or wearable weights route, the oh-so-good burn will sneak up on you. Great for strengthening your balance, enhancing coordination, and working your upper or lower body, you’ll maximize your sweat with 1-, 2-, or 3-pounders.
Don’t want to spend your hard-earned cash on weights? Grab some water bottles or jugs, canned goods, bags of rice or beans, et voilà—problem solved.

    Resistance bands
Throw in some resistance to your favorite moves with bands of varying levels, and you can easily switch up your Pilates routine. Inexpensive, yet effective, they’re ideal for building strength and flexibility. Place your band of choice around your thighs, ankles, or wrists for more intensity.
If you want a no-spend option, dig out the old pairs of leggings buried in your dresser drawer and DIY some resistance bands. Tie the two legs of a pair together (this make take some trial-and-error) and wrap it around your knees, ankles, or wrists.

    Pilates ring
Simple in theory, this tool does a lot. Flanked by padded grips, you can squeeze in or push out to target your inner and outer thighs, chest and shoulders, and pelvic floor. Bonus points: It can give you a leg up on your posture and balance too.
Put your foam roller on double-duty and use it in place of a Pilates ring. Light and compact enough to hold or squeeze, it’ll do the job well.

    3. Grab a book on Pilates
DIY your Pilates workout with the guidance of a good, old-fashioned book. No matter your level of experience, there’s a paperback for you. From restorative stretching to a series of compound movements (read: firing up more than one muscle group at a time), you can customize your Pilates practice. Look for titles that include clear illustrations and detailed descriptions of exercises to guide you every step (or squeeze) of the way.
If you’re a newbie, no problem! Picking up a book on the basics will give you an intro to technique and form, teach you the difference between the “Hundred” and “Swan Dive,” and give you a solid foundation to build your Pilates routine. Bottom line: You do you, and go at your own pace (no intimidation or judgment here).

    4. Get the Pilates look
I think we can all agree that there’s nothing like a new workout set to get you motivated for a good sweat. So make room in your “hot girl summer” budget and treat yourself to a ‘fit that’ll complete your Pilates girl look. A quick Amazon search of “workout sets for women” will give you endless scrolls of matching two-piece duds that won’t break the bank. Pro tip: Look out for those with the “Prime Try Before You Buy” option (a free seven-day try-on period where you’ll only be charged for what you keep). And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Amazon Lululemon dupes our very own fashion editor, Maddie, put to the test (and gave her stamp of approval).
When you’re on your third Target run for the week (anyone feel me?), peruse their JoyLab activewear section and you’ll find wallet-friendly, lust-worthy pieces to fill your cart. Then there’s Old Navy with a crazy-good, extensive workout collection that includes offerings in various fabrics and sizes XS-4X. So go ahead and don your newest workout set like you would going to the gym, light a candle, and hit “play” on your Pilates playlist for your next heart-pumping at-home sesh.

    5. Follow Pilates influencers
Thanks to IG and TikTok, you can make connections and immerse yourself in the world of Pilates with a few scrolls and clicks and for zilch. It may take some exploration to find your new favorite, must-follow Pilates guru and a community you vibe with most, but the good news? There’s no shortage of inspo, hacks, and tips to get your #fitspo fill. Find instructional videos, workouts that target a specific part of the body, and advice for the novice and pro alike. So on your next scroll, be on the hunt for the Pilates It girl to inspire your next workout.

Meet The Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Helping Women Crush Their Goals

With fourteen years’ experience as a sports nutritionist and personal trainer, Candice De Mendonca thrives on helping others achieve their fitness goals. Here’s everything you need to know about how she crushes it every day!
She Walked The Walk And Talked The Talk
“I’ve run cross country for South Africa and represented Gauteng in swimming, athletics, hockey, soccer and indoor soccer. I love sports and it’s the reason I studied sports development at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), along with personal training. Thereafter I decided to also complete my Diploma in Food Science, which has made a world of difference to my expertise,” says Candice.
    She Fuelled Her Body Correctly
Fuelling your body doesn’t have to be all broccoli and chicken and no fun! According to De Mendonca low fat chocolate milk is a scientifically proven sports nutritional aid. YAY!
She explains: “When I discovered First Choice’s High Protein Recovery, I felt like a child on Christmas morning. HPR is literally the best post workout recovery aid out there. It offers no digestive issues, is easily absorbed and well used by the body. It has more protein and less calories and sugar than most other products on the market. I recommend it to anyone who is active, from children to adults.”
“HPR is scientifically formulated to give elite and amateur athletes rapid muscle recovery following intense workouts or competition.”

She Found What Worked For Her Body
It really is true that every body is different so you’ve got to find what works for you. For Candice, her body struggled with protein shakes.
“HPR changed all that. I can drink it every day and sometimes more than once a day, and reap all the benefits with no side effects. I see, feel and taste the hard work and research that have gone into it and most definitely won’t support a product I haven’t tested myself. HPR and the team behind it is one you can trust holistically. Woodlands Dairy and First Choice’s ethics and focus on sustainability, as well as the research and development that have gone into HPR, have paid off.”
    She Shares Her Knowledge
It’s true what they say, knowledge really is power and that’s why she shares it so that women are equipped with the knowledge to live their best lives. As sports nutritionist for HPR, De Mendonca writes a monthly blog to educate consumers, assist with any questions they have on nutrition and training, as well as interview athletes.
She Has A Trick For Setting Life And Fitness Goals
Dedicated to helping others achieve their goals, she also sets goals for herself every year. “I usually fixate on one word for the year. Last year it was success and I managed to achieve all my goals except one. Big and small. This year my word is focus and I have written down my goals for the year. My main goals include buying a property of my own, fulfilling my role as HPR sports nutritionist, and growing my online restaurant and training brand.”

10 Products a Fitness Trainer Always Has in Her Gym Bag

Whether you’re a trainer, an athlete, or a weekend warrior, your gym bag should contain everything you need to be out and about from sunrise to sunset. Besides multiple outfit changes, shower necessities, and healthy snacks, the best-prepped backpacks and gym duffels contain items you may not even know you need to help manage a busy schedule and an on-the-go lifestyle. So before you head to your favorite group fitness class, meet up with friends for a morning trail run before Sunday brunch, or hit the gym for an after-work sweat sesh, have these 10 gym bag essentials ready to go—they’ll vastly improve your Fit Girl game!

    The Laundress
    Sport Spray
No time for a shower? No problem! Gone are the days of smelling like you just left the gym (even if you just left the gym). With The Laundress Sport Spray, you’ll always be smelling fresh and clean. Sport Spray, which comes in multiple scents (pro tip: go for the grapefruit!), adds a fresh and crisp smell while removing unpleasant odors from anything it’s sprayed on, such as bags, clothes, and shoes, or even directly on the body.

    Trainers
When it comes to the best shoes to have in your bag, NoBull really takes the cake. The NoBull trainers are flat enough to train in (side note: please stop squatting in running shoes!) and cute enough to wear out on the town, whether you’re into bright colors and designs or a solid pair of neutrals. The proper training shoes are as important as the workout itself, so investing in a good pair that you like to wear is paramount.

    Urban Sport
    Slides
There’s nothing more satisfying than a shower after a good workout. And when you’re showering in shared facilities, it’s important to equip yourself with the right accessories to prevent things like athlete’s foot. Whenever you are in the locker room, the shower, or the changing room, never go around barefoot. Instead, keep a pair of flip-flops or slides in your gym bag. These slides are fashionable, non-slip, and sturdy enough to keep you clean, safe, and looking great.

    Vista Earbuds
Whether you’ve got a curated playlist, a true crime podcast line-up, or Oprah’s new favorite audiobook, the gym calls for sweat-proof, nonslip, and noise-canceling earbuds. JayBird Vista earbuds check all of those boxes, with earbuds that are treadmill-, box jump-, and grunting-squat-rack-neighbor-friendly.  The bonus? With a self-charging carrying case, they’ll never leave you high and dry without battery life. Toss these bad boys right into your gym bag and make every workout that much more enjoyable.

Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer
When it comes to making the gym-to-dinner turnaround, there’s nothing harder than turning a sweaty ponytail into an acceptable hairstyle. Thanks to the Revlon One-Step Volumizer, a two-in-one hair brush and dryer, going from Sweaty Betty to glam girl is a cinch. This barrel brush dryer is the only tool you need to create an easy blowout from the locker room. All it takes is a few minutes to brush your way to a “Did you just come from the salon?” look. Take it from a girl whose knowledge of barbells is way more extensive than her knowledge of hair products: The One-Step Volumizer is the easiest and most effective way to go from gym to date night.

    Plant-Based Protein Bars
Filling up on protein is important for muscle repair after a tough workout, and when it comes to choosing a protein bar, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice taste for health. No Cow protein bars are dairy-free, whey-free, gluten-free, kosher, non-GMO, and contain 20+ grams of plant-based protein per bar. Whether you like your protein bars fruity or dessert-like, No Cow has a protein bar for you. Keeping snacks in your gym bag is a great way to ensure that you never face that post-workout ravenousness that can lead you straight to the nearest fast food joint.

    Theragun Mini
No matter your preferred style of training, keep a Theragun mini in your gym bag for when the soreness hits, and you’ll never have trouble going down the stairs again. Small enough to carry around, yet powerful enough to massage tight muscles, the Theragun mini is the perfect pre- and post-workout recovery tool. The portable percussive massager gets deep into muscle tissue and improves blood flow while loosening and relaxing those stubborn areas that are particularly susceptible to DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), like hamstrings, quads, glutes, and lats.

    Tiger Balm
    Pain-Relieving Patch
Sometimes sore muscles need some extra TLC. Enter: Tiger Balm. You probably know Tiger Balm as a herbal pain relief ointment that works on contact, but did you know it comes in the form of patches, sans the grease and mess of the OG balm? Simply unwrap the patch, stick it on the part of your body that aches, and let the pain relief begin.

    Cryosphere Ice Cold Massage Roller
If your fitness routine has you on your feet a lot (I’m looking at you, runners!), you’re going to want to keep a Recoup Fitness Cryosphere Cold Massage Roller in your bag at all times. Just two hours in the freezer provides six hours of cold massaging, which is a delight on tired arches, backs, glutes, and shoulders. The roller is lightweight, can be used by hand or placed on the floor, and has a built-in handle to keep hands warm while in use. Bonus points for its double-duty use as a facial roller to alleviate those pesky, dark under-eye circles or that post-workout rosy cheek situation!

    Hustle Clean
    The Body Wipe
Made by athletes to clean and refresh and large enough to use on your whole body, these wipes are perfect for tight turnarounds when a shower is simply not an option. Keeping these in your bag will ensure that you’re never subjected to a day of sweaty discomfort after a workout. They can also be used as a way to freshen up after a long flight, your walk to work, or an accidental spill.

    Recharge
Exercise and sweat can deplete electrolytes, so adding packet of electrolytes can be a game changer. LMNT Recharge is a paleo-, keto-, and vegan-friendly electrolyte drink mix that deliciously replenishes electrolytes lost in sweat. One packet (either before, during, or after your workout) will restore the sodium, potassium, and magnesium levels your body needs to function at its best. Not sure which flavor to try first? The Orange Salt is a fan favorite, giving delightful summertime margarita vibes. Toss a few packets into your gym bag and recharge those electrolytes!

Pilates Newbie? Learn This Pilates Lingo To Help You Keep Up In Your First Class

Pilates is hugely underrated as a form of exercise. The movements are so tiny and the weights so light… how can it possibly be effective, right? Well here’s the thing: You don’t always need to be lifting huge chunks of metal with a full range of motion to build strength and muscle tone. And with the ‘That Girl‘ aesthetic going viral on TikTok, Pilates classes are finally having their time in the spotlight. If you’re new to Pilates, though, you may find you struggle to keep up because the teacher is speaking a foreign language a.k.a. using Pilates terms. Use this guide to decode some of those common, yet totally weird, Pilates terms.
    [buy_button img=”https://www.womenshealthsa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/foam-roller.jpeg” url=”https://c.trackmytarget.com?a=u77ksa&i=ph1q1o&ref1=PilatesTermsFoamRoller&r=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mrpsport.com%2Fen_za%2F3-in-1-foam-roller-6252010301″ description=”3-in-1 Foam Roller” price=”199.99″ title=”BUY NOW!” alignment=”row”][/buy_button]
    Pilates Terms You Should Know:
    “Scoop your abs.”
May sound like: “Tilt your pelvis.”
What it actually means: Pull your tummy muscles in towards your spine and simultaneously up towards your chest. This helps lengthen your waist and stabilises your spine during movements. Pilates is all about moving well to prevent injury. You don’t need an ice-cream scoop to perform this move.
    “Articulate your spine.”
May sound like: Move vertebra by vertebra.
What it actually means: Rolling or unrolling your spine, either from standing, so you’re rolling forward towards the ground, or sitting upright, so you’re rolling onto your back. The idea is to move slowly, little by little, and with control. Moving this way increases flexibility in your back.

“Lengthen through the crown of your head.”
May sound like: Lengthen through your spine.
What it actually means: Sit or stand as tall as you possibly can. So no out-of-body experience then.
    “Soften your elbows.”
    Also: “Soften your knees.”
What it actually means: Whether it’s your elbows or knees that are getting the “softening” treatment, you don’t need Ingram’s to do it. All it means is that you shouldn’t lock the joint.

    “Fire your glutes.”
May sound like: Engage your glutes.
What it actually means: If your Pilates teacher gives you this instruction, all you’re doing is activating your butt muscles as you prepare to move. Case in point: If you’re lying on your back, about to go into bridge pose, squeeze your bum before you lift your hips.

    “Wrap your thighs.”
What it actually means: With your legs together, rotate your thighs outwards very slightly, as you simultaneously squeeze the backs of your inner thighs together. No contact plastic required.

    “Bring your wings down.”
What it actually means: No, this is not proof that Pilates is some woo-woo practice created for fairies. It’s not referring to actual wings. Simply pull you shoulders down away from your ears. Your neck feels better already, right?
    [buy_button img=”https://www.womenshealthsa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/blue_heaven_swing_board_adult_size_the_natural_one_sku86068.jpg” url=”https://c.trackmytarget.com?a=vpmli3&i=ph1q1o&ref1=PilatesTermsSwingBoard&r=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.faithful-to-nature.co.za%2Fblue-heaven-swing-board-adult-size-the-natural-one” description=”Blue Heaven Swing Board” price=”1 799″ title=”Buy It” alignment=”row”][/buy_button]
    “Open your chest.”
    May sound like: Chest wide.
What it actually means: “Scalpel!” No, not really. Just pull you shoulders back and breathe more deeply so your chest expands.
    “Knit your ribs.”
May sound like: Draw the ribs in.
What it actually means: As much as a rib-shaped tea cosy would make an interesting talking point at your next brunch, what you want to do here is pull your front ribs, just below your chest bone, closer together. You’ll feel your upper abs engage. It also stabilises your spine. Pilates is especially good for those with back pain.
WATCH: Beginners’ Pilates Workout With A Stretchy Band (And Practice Your Newly Learnt Pilates Terms)
    [embedded content]
    “Pull towards your midline.”
What it actually means: It sounds like something out of Olympic rowing, but the ‘midline’ is actually an anatomical term for an invisible line down the centre of your body that divides left from right. If you hear this phrase in your Pilates class, you’re probably pulling your leg towards your other leg.
READ MORE: 4 Genius Exercises From A Pilates Teacher That Will Help You Touch Your Toes
    “Ground your feet.”
May sound like: Anchor your hips.
What it actually means: Imagine yourself standing normally and someone bumps into you. You’ll probably stumble, because your weight was more on one foot than the other and you were actually kind of leaning on the side of that foot. Now imagine standing with your feet firmly planted. That’s grounding.
    “Hinge from your hip.”
May sound like: Break in the hip.
What it actually means: Bend forward at the hip joint, without rounding your back or bending your knees. Think of a laptop – the screen is the top half of your body, the keyboard is the lower half. Neither bends when you close the laptop.

Why (And How) You Should Plan Your Workouts Around Your Cycle

Do you crush intense HIIT sessions one week only to slog through burpees the next? If so, cycle syncing your workouts can help you create a routine that honors your energy levels and improves your exercise results. Understanding how your hormones impact your training empowers you to choose the best form of movement for your body no matter where you’re at in your menstrual cycle.
Medical professionals and wellness experts have recently begun highlighting the importance of altering your exercise routine throughout the month to match your hormone levels. Functional nutritionist Alisa Vitti first introduced women to this concept in her book WomenCode. She’s since trademarked her hormone balancing protocol called the Cycle Syncing® Method. The Cycle Syncing® Method helps menstruating people move, eat, and work in a way that respects their hormones through each phase of their cycle. People who practice cycle syncing workouts often experience mental and physical benefits, including better sleep, reduced PMS, and increased energy.

    Meet the expert
    Alisa Vitti, HHC, AADP
HORMONE EXPERT AND FOUNDER OF FLO LIVING
Alisa Vitti is a functional nutritionist and womens hormone expert, the founder of modern hormone health care company FLO Living, bestselling author of WomanCode, and creator of MyFLO, the #1 paid period app on iTunes. She has made expert appearances on The Dr. Oz Show, Women’s Health, MindBodyGreen, and The Huffington Post.

What are the benefits of cycle syncing your workouts?
According to Vitti, planning your workouts around your cycle can help you bio-hack your metabolism, increasing your workout’s effectiveness. “Your metabolism changes speed and your resting cortisol levels change in a cyclical pattern,” she said. “Since they are not the same every day, it makes no sense to eat the same amount of calories or do the same workout types or intensity each day. You want to match your caloric intake, workout type, and intensity with each phase of your cycle so you can optimize the use of stored fat as fuel and build lean muscle more efficiently.”
Not only does cycle syncing help you burn more fat and build more muscle, but it also encourages you to reconnect with your body. Once I removed the pressure to exercise at peak intensity all month, I could listen to what my body needed. Some days I had the energy for an outdoor run, on other days I just wanted to stretch on my yoga mat. No matter the day, I knew I was moving in a way that aligned with my hormones and my energy level.

What to keep in mind before you start cycle syncing your workouts:
If you’re a type-A gal like myself, you’ve likely already pulled out your calendar and begun meticulously scheduling next month’s workouts. While the Cycle Syncing® Method is a great tool to help guide your exercise plan, Vitti recommends letting go of perfectionism.  “Drop the perfectionism and instead embrace becoming dynamic and responsive. Listen to your body, track your cycle, track your symptoms, notice how you feel in each phase, notice how doing certain activities makes you feel in each phase, and reclaim the healthy relationship with yourself and your body you are supposed to have.”

How to exercise during each phase:
    Menstrual phase
During your menstrual phase (AKA when you’re bleeding), your estrogen and progesterone tank. This causes you to have low energy and feel generally less social. If you’re feeling a little sluggish, don’t push it. Swap your high-intensity workouts for something more restorative, like walking or gentle yoga. Research shows that an hour of strenuous activity during your period can increase your chances of exercise-induced inflammation. You don’t want to add aching muscles on top of an aching uterus, so skip your intense workout class during this time.

    Follicular phase
Your follicular phase starts on the first day of menstruation and ends at ovulation. During the middle of your follicular phase, your estrogen and progesterone begin to rise. You’ll likely notice increased energy and begin to feel more social. Now is a great time to check out a fast-paced group fitness class or see if a buddy wants to join you for a run.

    Ovulatory phase
During ovulation, your estrogen and testosterone peak, and your body is at its most fertile. You’ll likely feel full of energy, so this is a great time to hit fitness PRs (AKA personal records), like your max squat or fastest 5k. Thanks to your high hormones, you’re also your most aroused and confident. So go ahead and talk to that cutie you’ve been eyeing in spin class. Your spike in confidence might just lead to a hot date.

    Luteal phase
After ovulation, you enter the luteal phase of your cycle. Elevated progesterone levels will cause your energy to decline and you may feel more withdrawn. When you notice your energy taking a dip, scale your workouts down a notch. Replace high-intensity workouts with lightweight circuit training, walks, and yoga. It’s also a good idea to take your workouts indoors if you live in a warmer climate. Since your basal body temperature is higher in the luteal phase of your cycle, you may notice a decrease in your athletic performance when working out in the heat.
