Dubai-based influencer urges caution about beauty industry after hospitalisation

When it comes to beauty these days, there’s so many treatments available that it’s hard to keep track of. Whether it be facials, manicures or pedicures, brows, waxing, laser treatment – the list really is endless.
However, given that so many treatments are widely used nowadays we rarely think to stop about the side effects some of them can have. More often than not, you there will be no side effects whatsoever, but there is always a chance.

This is exactly the case Dubai-based influencer Leena Kaziz found herself in when she went for an LVL lash treatment – it stands for length-volume-lift where the lashes are straightened with a serum to appear more lifted.
It was a treatment Leena had never had before, but what she wasn’t expecting was the severe reaction she was going to have to the treatment, which resulted in her being hospitalised.

After having her LVL treatment done mid last month, Leena began to notice some redness and some slight dryness, but it was when she was trying to go to sleep that she felt a sharp pain in her eyes.
Leena didn’t immediately go to hospital instead, she waited for the salon to open the next day to share pictures with them. She tells Emirates Woman that she didn’t think “it was that severe”.
“Later I found out I had a severe infection in my eyes and eyelids as well as a severe allergic reaction,” she reveals. “The allergic reaction increased with time and reached a point where my eyes where fully closed.
“The infection affected my sight even after my eyes were manually opened. My doctor was scared that the infection would reach behind my eyes and closer to my brain.”

Leena made the decision to share her story with her followers on Instagram as a warning to take precautions when undergoing beauty treatments and “to create awareness” for others.
“Everyone needs to know what happened,” she explains. “We really don’t have significant awareness about the risks we are exposing ourselves to. This treatment is so accessible and is available in most salons – a lot could go wrong.”
Even three weeks on, Leena still isn’t fully recovered.
“My eyes and eyes lids are still being irritated from the product,” she says. “I still need a month of medication and my skin is still not back to normal.”
Admittedly, the Syrian native calls this whole ordeal a “life-changing experience” and a “wake up call”.
“We are often too obsessed with becoming prettier and more appealing that we forget to really protect ourselves from our own self,” she says.
“Having said this doesn’t mean that I will stop taking care of my beauty, not at all. But when you are fully aware of how precious your body is you tend to be pickier and more cautious.”

Going forward, Leena believes that a patch test should be mandatory for consumers not just for an LVL treatment, but any treatment.
She believes people need to have the same consciousness when it comes to the beauty industry as any other.
“As consumers we have become very educated and picky with our food industry,” she says. “We read labels, do research and make conscious decisions on the products we consume. I hope that my experience will make as many women as possible become as picky with the beauty industry.”
And on a final note, she’s encouraging everyone to see their body “beyond just the outside”.
“Appreciate yourself and the preciousness of your body,” she says. “Remind yourself of how lucky you are that your body works day and night to make you alive.
“Because when you constantly remind yourself of that you will be more cautious, and you will do more research and make wiser choices.”

10 Trends French Girls Are Wearing This Fall

We call this time of year spooky season, and the French call it la rentrée (or the back-to-school season when grown-ups return to work from summer holiday). No matter what you call it, fall fashion is undoubtedly in full force. French girls greet the colder weather like they do everything else: with au natural hair, an iconic lipstick, that signature je ne sais quoi, and a killer wardrobe. Read on for the trends popping up in Paris this fall and shop the pieces that you’ll be spotting on all the cool French girls this season.
    1. Brown Faux Leather

There’s something so effortlessly luxurious about leather texture, and French girls know it. This season, leather is taking over blazers, button-ups, and even trousers. However, your favorite style stars are replacing classic black with chocolatey brown for a trend that screams 2020.

    2. Straight-Leg Jeans

Skinnies are not a necessary staple in the wardrobe of French girls like they are in yours or mine. Instead, straight leg jeans with a bit of a flared leg and relaxed fit are the Parisian go-to denim style. Baggier is better! And yes, they do work with even your most oversized knit. Try tucking the front into the waist of the pants to balance proportions.

    3. Layers of Neutrals

Parisian style is synonymous with timeless, so it’s no surprise that they layer up a variety of most timeless colors. French girls don’t do 50 Shades of Grey; they do 50 shades of neutral. Think of layering a range of off-white to dark brown, and every color in between. Try white denim with a beige sweater, or camel trousers and a cream-colored knit, and then throw on your favorite fall jacket and some key brown accessories.

    4. Sleeveless Turtleneck Sweater

Not only are they the perfect comfy piece for staying at home all day every day, but sleeveless turtleneck sweaters are ideal to layer under outerwear because they won’t add bulk like chunky knit. Wear with your comfiest trousers to look chic for Zoom meetings or lounging at home, or throw on a blazer or jacket for an OOTD that will keep you warm while staying sleek.

    5. Puff-Sleeve Sweaters

As if we needed more reasons to wear the prettiest sweater style ever, puffed-sleeve knit happens to be a staple in the fall wardrobe of French girls and Parisian style stars alike. Wear as a cardigan or opt for a simple pullover sweater that has way more je ne sais quoi than your average sweater.

    6. Bold Plaid

No, bold plaid is not just for Gwen Stefani in her “No Doubt” days. It can also be incredibly timeless and effortless when done in structured, ladylike pieces like a tailored blazer. Make the trend more Blair Waldorf than ’90s punk by pairing with feminine accessories like a chain quilted purse and pointed-toe shoes.

    7. Shearling Coats

Yes, shearling is so cool that it’s the most popular coat of the season in both our Instagram feeds and in France. Maybe it’s because it looks much more modern than faux fur, or maybe because it’s so freaking cozy, but you can find us in rocking shearling coats until spring. Pair with feminine ruffles and lace à la French it-girl, Jeanne Damas.

    8. Lace-Up Booties

One of the most popular shoe styles of the season (beyond the classic ballet flats, of course) is an edgier version of your classic booties. Lace-up booties are not only functional and comfortable, but pair perfectly with a fall dress and tights. After all, the French girl’s signature is effortless style, so an edgy pair of booties makes a dressed-up outfit a little less structured. C’est parfait!

    9. High-Waisted Miniskirts

Because sometimes a miniskirt is just more feminine and comfortable than a pair of jeans or trousers, French girls bring their shortest styles into fall with knee-high boots and oversized cozy knit tucked into the waist.

    10. Trench Coats

Ah, the trench coat: as essential to French girl style as stripes and classic white tees. The lightweight (but warm) outerwear can be worn from the first day of fall until the last day of spring, making it the perfect investment piece and the simplest way to get your Parisian-girl style on. Make it more 2020 than Breakfast at Tiffany’s by pairing with light-wash denim in a relaxed fit and leaving your hair “I-woke-up-like-this” effortless.

8 Ways to Measure Your Health That Have Nothing to Do With Weight

Some people count calories and some people count steps, but there is one measurement that’s constantly obsessed over when it comes to health: weight. Because of the emphasis our culture puts on the number on a scale, you might think it’s the only way to measure your health. The truth is that your wellbeing comes down to multiple important factors, many of which have absolutely nothing to do with the physical space you take up. Genetics and lifestyle factors are different for every body, so of course weight doesn’t paint an accurate picture of health (duh!). Instead of hopping on a scale and dealing with the guilt, shame, and embarrassment that often comes with it, try these eight ways to identify how healthy you are instead.
    1. Glasses of water
Staying hydrated is a tale as old as time, but there’s a reason just about every expert on the planet recommends it. Your body uses water to maintain the functions of cells, organs, tissues, etc. As with everything else, the amount of water the body needs for optimal health varies from person to person because of factors like lifestyle, activity level, and bio-individuality, but it’s a good rule of thumb to be drinking as much water as possible.
If you’re regularly sipping throughout the day, drinking a big glass before your first cup of coffee, eating water-rich fruits and veggies, and bringing a water bottle whenever you’re on the go, you’re probably drinking enough to keep your body functioning at its best. If you do want to improve your health with hydration, try tracking the glasses of water you drink in a day and drink one more glass the next day.

    2. Hours spent sleeping
It’s true: falling asleep while watching Selling Sunset at 8:30pm can help boost your health. The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get 7-9 hours of sleep to reap the benefits of “powering the mind, restoring the body, and fortifying virtually every system in the body.” Getting your beauty rest is critical for the health of your body, so tracking how many hours of sleep you’re really getting can help determine if your sleep is restoring or if you could use a little improvement. Try an app like SleepCycle that will not only track how many hours you’re sleeping, but will identify how quality your sleep is. Even if you’re getting nine hours but your sleep cycles are poor quality, you won’t feel well-rested.

    3. Nutrients
Reality check: counting calories doesn’t really tell us much about our health. Every body needs a different caloric intake, and every calorie looks different in the body (for example, 1,000 calories of soda would be very different than 1,000 calories of spinach). But when we’re aware of the nutrients (like vitamins, macros, antioxidants, phytochemicals, etc.) and what they do for the body (like give energy, boost skin glow, or reduce inflammation), we’re able to use food as a tool to achieve peak wellness. Focusing on more nutrients can also subconsciously crowd out processed and sugary foods (totally guilt-free). Think of adding more whole foods into your diet (like adding kale to a pasta dish or eating berries with breakfast) to get more healing nutrients.

    4. Energy levels
Another reality check coming at you: you shouldn’t be OK with just feeling OK. Afternoon slumps and necessary nap times are normalized in our society, but brain fog, a lack of energy, and general exhaustion is your body’s way of telling you that something might be off. Everything from difficulty waking up in the mornings to needing a coffee at 3pm might mean you have some room for improvement. Fatigue is not a way of life; it’s a symptom. Getting better sleep at night, moving more, eating different foods, or just taking more breaks might help fix energy levels so you feel your very best and be as healthy as possible. On the flip side, if you do wake up refreshed, have consistent energy throughout the day, and feel relaxed at night, it’s a good sign of how healthy your body and lifestyle are.

    5. Bowel movements
You know how they say eyes are the window to the soul? Well, poop is the window to your health. Sure, it’s not a great dinner table topic, but your bowel movements are an important measurement to identify what’s going on in the body. The gut microbiome affects the immune system, the brain, hormone levels, and pretty much every other function and system in the body, so it’s crucial to keep the gut healthy. The frequency, appearance, or changes in bowel movements can give us some insight into how healthy the gut actually is. Talk to your doctor if you think your stool is abnormal or changes, and consider tracking how often you’re going to the bathroom or how certain foods and lifestyle changes affect movements.

    6. How many push-ups you can do
Last year, a study made headlines for finding that push-up ability could predict heart disease in active adult men. Even if you’re not an active adult man and haven’t done a push-up since middle school PE, the point is that physical strength and endurance are huge indicators of how healthy the body is overall. Whether it’s how many push-ups you can do, how much weight you lift, how many miles you can hike, or how long you can kickbox, your physical limits tell you a lot about your body. If you are motivated by external factors, don’t stare at a number on a scale. Instead, push yourself to do one more rep, move up in weight, or do one more push-up to improve your health.

    7. Mood
The mind-body connection is real, people! Moods can actually clue us in to what’s going on in the body. Food can affect your mood (which is why “nutritional psychiatry” is a thing), so if you could use a few little tweaks in your stress levels or happiness (who doesn’t in 2020?), try eating foods like nuts, berries, or dark chocolate, which may help boost your mood. Likewise, my favorite reason to exercise is that it serves as a major mood booster. Bottom line: eat whole foods that are good for the gut and fit in regular exercise to improve your overall health and boost your mood. The mind-body connection is a never-ending cycle you can use as a tool for checking in with the body.

    8. How you physically feel
OK, let me rant for a sec. I’m thankful for technology like Fitbits that track our steps, apps that record the nutrients we’re eating, and yes, even scales, which help our doctors keep us healthy. With that being said, I also think that focusing on external numbers, counting, and tracking is preventing us from being truly intuitive with our bodies. The truth is that we can understand our health simply based on how good we feel, rather than depending on a number on a screen or scale. The most powerful, accurate, and sustainable method to measure your health? Take notice when you feel great, when you feel OK, and when you don’t feel good. Your body is constantly communicating with you, whether it’s through a symptom like acne, upset stomachs, or fatigue, or through feeling energized, vivacious, and happy. All we have to do is listen and adjust to achieve our healthiest selves.

How do you measure your health? More

Dubai issues updated travel guidelines for UAE citizens, residents and visitors

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, countries are changing and adapting guidelines as best they can in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.
With that, Dubai has outlined new travel guidelines for citizens, residents and tourists, per an announcement from the emirate’s Supreme Committee of Crisis & Disaster Management.

Passengers flying with Etihad now have a COVID-19 test included in their ticket

Abu Dhabi-based airline Etihad Airways is now including a COVID-19 test in the price of tickets for those departing from the UAE capital.
Up until the end of the year, Etihad customers departing from Abu Dhabi International Airport will be entitled to a COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test at Life Medical Diagnostic Centres around the UAE as part of the cost of their ticket.

However, this does not include those flying to China.
Discussing the new launch, Dr Nadia Bastaki, the Vice President of Medical Services for the airline said: “We are confident this partnership will provide Etihad, and most importantly our guests, with Life Dx’s superior testing technologies so they can travel from the capital with greater peace of mind.”

She also added it’s a “further step” to help passengers feel “secure and protected” when travelling with the airline.

Abu Dhabi borders open to tourists
This comes after it was announced Abu Dhabi’s borders are now open to tourists.
The reopening of the borders to international travellers is to “support recovery plans of the country’s tourism sector and economy”, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) said.
However, unlike neighbouring emirate Dubai, those arriving into Abu Dhabi those who are arriving from an international destination – whether they are tourists or residents – must quarantine in their homes or a hotel room for 14 days even if they test negative for COVID-19.
Etihad Airways will include a Covid-19 test in the price of tickets for UAE customers departing from Abu Dhabi until the end of the year.
The national airline will offer all passengers flying out of the UAE capital the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test at Life Medical Diagnostic Centres around the country as part of their airfare.

Harry Styles Is My Fall Fashion Inspiration—Here’s How I’m Copying His Most Popular Looks

Because I’m only going a few select places this fall, my wardrobe is shifting quite a bit, but probably not in the way you’d expect. The “trendiness” of my fashion sense has gone up about ten-fold. If I’m wearing an outfit anywhere, it’s going to be to the nine’s because what other excuse do I have to dress?! I’ve pretty much always dressed with the season’s trends in mind, but I’ve taken it to another level in fall 2020. The icon I’m using for all of my inspiration this fall? Harry Edward Styles. 🥰Does anyone remember that tweet that was like, “Does Harry think we just like the music or does he know that we would actually die for him?” I relate to that a lot. While I obviously fantasize about our adorable children (Xander Styles … is that not the coolest name on Earth?) and the miraculous love life we’d have together, I also just am absolutely enamored with him in every facet. His music? Revolutionary. The fact that he’s socially-conscious and aware? A dream. His sense of humor? Pretty good; I’m still thinking about that Sara Lee skit almost a year later. I’ve never seen a single interview with Harry Styles that makes me be like, “Ah, this guy’s overhyped.” He presents himself in the best way, and that, obviously, includes his style.
I was a One Direction stan in high school, and I still follow about 10 Harry Styles accounts on Twitter and Instagram just for updates about his whereabouts. But the best account I follow is the Harry Styles Fashion Archive, which shares his exact pieces and outfits. After scouring that account for about an hour on a Saturday morning a few weeks ago, I pinned hundreds of Harry-inspired looks on my Pinterest board to copy this year. In the name of sharing everything about me on the Internet, I’ve put together Harry’s key pieces to get the look, plus a few outfits of his I’m dying to recreate. Turn on “Woman” and gush over HS with me!

    Key Pieces
There are a few key items you can add to your wardrobe if you want to Harry-fy it just a bit. There’s no need to go full Gucci model to get inspired by his style; instead, grab a few of these pieces and mix-and-match with your personal style to make it your own. Basically, “There’s a piece of you in how I dress” is about us. It’s our Harry Styles capsule wardrobe if you will.

    Old Skool Sneaker

If Harry’s wearing a sneaker, it’s usually these. Pair them with trousers, denim, leggings, and more to make any look more casual.

    Stella and Haas
    Band Ring

Harry’s always wearing rings, usually one on every single finger. Layer up your rings in your metal of choice (Harry’s a silver guy, which I can appreciate).

    Rayon Long-Sleeve Blouse

Harry absolutely loves to layer. He almost never just wears a sweater; he always pairs a button-down collared top underneath. This is a super simple way to upgrade your sweater collection with one simple piece.

    Chinese Laundry
    Finn Bootie

For Harry’s more dressed-up looks, he’s almost always in leather or suede booties. These are a great heel height, so you can walk in them all day long.

    Alice&Wonder
    United We Vote Tee

Harry is a graphic tee fiend, and I’ll bet he has a few great voting tees in his closet as we speak. Not only is Harry Styles a talented musician, a lovely-looking person, and a great actor (we’ve all seen “Dunkirk,” right?), but he’s a huge supporter and ally of the LGBTQ+ community and Black Lives Matter. I have a feeling Harry wants us all to vote in 2020—even if he’s not a U.S. citizen.

    Wide-Leg Twill Pants

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a picture of Harry in a skinny pant since 2018. He lives and breathes wide-leg and flare trousers and jeans, especially when they have a pattern like these plaid ones. If the wide-leg scares you, wear these with a bodysuit to keep your shape.

    LaPierre Cosmetics
    Nail Lacquer

Harry always has manicured nails, usually in a fun, bright shade (or multiple—he loves rainbow nails!). His nails usually ever-so-slightly match a point in the outfit or the color scheme.

    Sam Edelman
    Notched Collar Wool Blend Coat

In the fall and winter, Harry always dresses up his looks with a wool coat, often in camel or black. You’ll wear this to death, so we recommend investing if you can!

    Knit Sweater

You’ll always see Harry in bright sweaters (like the green below!), especially in situations where he can color-block, a major fall trend. But if you’re not quite ready to wear something bright, this sweater also comes in a gorgeous beige I could also see Harry wearing. It’s all in the preppy details.

    Copy His Outfits

wide-leg pants / green sweater / sneakers / pearl necklace
The second I saw this outfit, I wanted to compile every piece and wear it myself. This is certainly the most “out there” look on this list, but that’s why I love it. Harry isn’t afraid of mixing colors and styles that seem counterintuitive. The hardest item to source was a sweater—Harry loves his graphic sweaters, but of course, they’re all astronomically priced—but I quickly found a green option that would work just as well. I love how the pearl necklace (a staple in Harry’s closet the last year or so) and trousers dress up this bright sweater and sneakers combo.
If this outfit was a Harry song, it’d be: “Sunflower, Vol. 6”

black skinny jeans / leopard button-up / gold ring / ankle boots / canvas tote
This is a classic Harry look circa 2015. At the tail end of One Direction (gone, but never forgotten), Harry sported a version of this look basically every single day: button-up, black skinny jeans, and ankle boots. And even in 2015, I was furiously pinning it to my Pinterest style board. He’s found a way to make even basics look chic, typically by adding a cool bag (I think he’d appreciate this one from Etsy), lots of rings, and unbuttoning the top just enough to see his glorious tattoos.
If this outfit was a Harry song, it’d be: “Sign of the Times”

black trousers (plus-size option) / organza top (option 2) (plus-size) / black heels / pearl earrings / nail polish
When I imagined this article, this wasn’t a look that immediately came to mind, but as I kept staring it, I realized this is actually quite an easy outfit to put-together for normal life, just with an added HS flair. Whether you’re going to a wedding this fall (don’t forget your mask!), happy hour on a patio, or just having a pretend girls’ night, this outfit should be top of mind. Tuck the top into the trousers to give the illusion that you’re wearing a jumpsuit, and don’t forget the classic Harry manicure—it truly completes the look.
If this outfit was a Harry song, it’d be: “Lights Up”

    button-up / sweater vest / trousers (plus-size option) / loafers / sunglasses
I went into our office twice this week, and somehow, I managed to wear a sweater vest both days. I can’t quit. I never thought I’d be so into the preppy style, but staring at photo after photo of Harry Styles absolutely rocking them has convinced me that it’s a must-have. Harry has made this his uniform lately, pairing it atop a button-up with wide-leg trousers and loafers. For a little extra ‘70s the HS way, add big, square sunglasses. Watermelon sugar hiiiiigh.
If this outfit was a Harry song, it’d be: “Adore You”

    graphic tee / shacket / flare jeans (plus-size + budget-friendly option) / sneakers / cherry earrings
Harry’s collection of graphic tees make me gasp every time. I love every single one, from the Christopher Kane “Sex” T-shirt (and pajama top!) he wore on SNL to the “But Daddy I Love Him” shirt he was seen wearing in NYC (the same weekend I was there—not saying it’s a conspiracy or anything, but …) to his very own merch while performing with Lizzo (game recognize game), he has mastered the art of the graphic tee, something I cannot say for myself. I love how he dresses them up and makes them look even cooler with plaid jackets and blazers, plus some extra pizazz whether it’s his jewelry, a fun nail design, or a statement pant. For this inspo, I’m head-over-heels for these cherry earrings—they’re handmade in Argentina by artisans using natural materials like glass, metals, and resin. Definitely Harry-approved.
If this outfit was a Harry song, it’d be: “Cherry” (duh!) More
