    As Eid Al Etihad is approaching, we thought to bring back a bit of the past. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) boasts a rich tapestry of history beyond its modern skyline.
    With facts known globally to ones that you discover only through years of living in this country, we made sure to gather all sorts of facts, from architecture to food in honour of December 2.
    On the occasion of the 54rd Eid Al Etihad, here are 10 lesser-known historical facts:
    Trucial States Era (19th Century)

    Before the formation of the UAE in 1971, the region was known as the Trucial States. These were sheikhdoms along the coast that entered into a series of agreements with the British government.
    Pearl Diving Economy

    In the early 20th century, the UAE’s economy was primarily reliant on pearl diving. The pearls from the Gulf were highly valued and contributed significantly to the region’s prosperity.
    Al Ain Oasis

    One of the world’s oldest permanently inhabited settlements, Al Ain, is home to a vast oasis and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It provides a glimpse into traditional Emirati agricultural practices.
    Al Fahidi Historic District

    In Dubai, the Al Fahidi Historic District is a step back in time. The area, with its wind-tower architecture, showcases the traditional construction methods of the region.
    Ancient Trade Routes

    The UAE has a rich history of being a crossroads for ancient trade routes. The city of Umm Al Quwain, for example, was a vital port for merchants.
    Bani Yas Tribe

    The Bani Yas tribe played a crucial role in the formation of the UAE. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, belonged to this influential tribe.
    Ibri Fort in Oman

    Ibri, a town now in Oman, was historically part of the UAE. The Ibri Fort stands as a testament to the historical connections between the regions.
    Jebel Hafeet Tombs

    Near Al Ain, Jebel Hafeet is not only the UAE’s second-highest peak but also home to ancient tombs dating back over 5,000 years.
    Liwa Date Festival

    Ras Al Khaimah Ghost Town

      The United Arab Emirates is close to celebrating the 53rd year of its union (now titled as Eid Al Etihad).
      This year, the organising committee has announced that this special day will be titled ‘Eid Al Etihad’. A name which commemorates the 1971 unification of the seven Emirates in establishing a nation based on shared commitments and vision.
      The renaming of this day offers an opportunity to reflect on the country’s history. To think that a nation reaching its 53rd year as a country and come so far in the modern world at lightning speed deserves the time to be acknowledged and honoured.
      In a world which goes through never ending change, and increasing developments in all fields, the UAE has managed to hit every goal. It has managed to excel in the creation of an environment which is safe, multi-cultural, educational and ambitious for both its residents and visitors.

      Eid Al Etihad is a day to celebrate the UAE’s heritage of deep-rooted traditions. The remembrance of a shared union has allowed for rich cultural diversity, inclusivity, and a remarkable journey for all of its people. There will be all types of celebrations and activities in all the Emirates to participate in.
      To reflect back on the centuries where people roamed the deserts and mountains. Tendering to their animals and date trees. Navigating the sea looking for pearls and fish, concurrently creating trade routes to open its doors to a world bigger than its ever known. It grew, like its horses and falcons, roaming around the land. Spreading its wings to fly into a world that led Sheikh Zayed and the Founding Fathers in building a unified state.

      Eid Al Etihad is for remembrance. It is for honor. For tradition. Lastly, for the vision which has not changed since its founding: union.

      Cartier and Dubai Design District have come together in celebration of Eid Al Etihad with a vibrant programme titled Al Manama by Cartier.

      Everything to know about the Al Manama exhibition
      The Al Manama exhibition opens on Friday 22nd November until the 3rd of December. The exhibit will include a variety of programmes ranging from panel discussions and creative collaborations featuring local Emirati creatives. Situated between buildings 9 and 10 of d3, you can partake in the exhibition in the three manamas conceptualized by local architects Ahmed and Rashid bin Shabib in collaboration with Cartier.
      The structures are a product of reimagining Emirati architecture from a contemporary lens, showcasing modernity in the preservation of the UAE’s heritage. The main manama hosts the programmes. The second one consists of a standing conversation pit and projector displaying past pictures of buildings, the sea, boats and people as a way to remember and reflect. The third manama is for the book enthusiasts. Containing a variety of different books related to the UAE and its history.

      Al Manama by Cartier: Revisiting Typologies
      The first day of the exhibition consisted of a panel titled Al Manama: Revisiting Typologies. It began with opening speeches from Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of d3 and Caroline Dumont Frotiee, Managing Director of Cartier UAE. Shortly after, the panel welcomed moderator Adina Hempel and speakers Ahmed and Rashid bin Shabib.
      In a reflective discussion on the practice of architecture, Ahmed and Rashid discussed the idea of an analogue social network. The Manama is a century old structure that has been revisited for the collaboration. Traditionally, it was a way for people to keep cool during the summertime.

      The panel sparked an interesting dialogue about the architecture and the culture. In a modern world where everything shifts quickly, emerging technologies constantly arise, how do we preserve some of the ‘lost art’ of creating?
      The answer to this question depends on who one might ask. The first step is always to revisit the past. As Ahmed and Rashid have done so by asking their grandmother to conceptualise these manamas in the Design District. Indeed one must find prior knowledge in order to be inspired. To create a new way of looking at old things, just like Jacques Cartier did (who visited the Dubai in 1912). He left with pearls that ultimately shifted the trajectory of Cartier.

Public sector and private sector workers will enjoy a four-day break, as announced by the UAE Federal Authority for Government Human Resources. This special occasion, commemorating the unification of the Emirates in 1971, is a time of national pride and celebration for both citizens and residents.

      When does the UAE National Day long weekend begin?

      The holiday begins on Monday, December 2, marking National Day, and extends through Tuesday, December 3. With the weekend preceding these dates (November 30 and December 1), public sector employees effectively get a four-day break. Regular working hours will resume on Wednesday, December 4.

      This announcement comes under the UAE’s unified holiday policy, ensuring equality in the number of public holidays for both public and private sector employees. This alignment reflects the country’s commitment to work-life balance and inclusivity for all members of the workforce.
