      UAE announces the official start date of Ramadan

      The most sacred month of the year begins this week in the UAE on Thursday, March 23, 2023.
      Depending on the moon sighting, the Islamic months last for 29 or 30 days, marking tomorrow as the start of a month in the Islamic Hijri calendar, which was not spotted on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 night.
      Special Iftar tents will be set up outside mosques and prayers will last well into the evening as this sacred month begins tomorrow.
      Marking the first holy month this year without any COVID-related restrictions, residents will be able to host Iftars along with gatherings and family. Additionally, masks are not required to be worn by worshippers inside mosques or any public places in the country.
      For those abstaining from food and drinks from dusk to dawn will observe shorter working hours during this period.

      According to the UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), the official work timings for private sector employees during Ramadan have been reduced by two hours. Government employees will work 9am-2.30pm, Monday to Thursday, and 9am-noon on Fridays while private sector workers will see their hours reduced by two hours per day.
      Eid Al Fitr break
      If you’re looking to plan ahead for this year’s first long weekend. The official Eid Al Fitr holiday in the UAE will commence from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3. As per the current astrological predictions, the break will take place from Thursday, April 20 to Sunday, April 23, 2023.

      As one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is an important time for all those living in the UAE.
      Regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam, the Holy Month of Ramadan is a period for reflection and prayer, by way of fasting from sunrise to sunset.
      Dependent on the siting of the moon, Ramadan can last from 29 to 30 days and given that the Islamic calendar does not correspond directly with the Gregorian calendar, the exact dates of Ramadan vary year on year.
      When is Ramadan in 2023?
      So, when exactly is Ramadan set to fall in 2023?
      It’s expected that the first day of Ramadan will be on March 23, 2023, and the last day is estimated to be April 21, 2023.
      After Ramadan ends, Eid Al Fitr – a major celebration in the Islamic calendar – is set to take place
      In November 2022, it was announced by the UAE cabinet that Eid Al Fitr will be from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3. Per the Gregorian calendar, this will likely be from April 20 to April 23, 2023, with dates subject to the moon sighting and confirmation by the UAE government.
      However, it’s always good to know estimates in the name of planning ahead!

      UAE’s public holidays confirmed for 2023

      As residents gear up for the last public holidays of 2022, it’s time to mark your calendars with all the upcoming public holidays in 2023.
      If you’re looking to plan for next year in advance, the UAE cabinet has approved the official holidays for the UAE’s public and private sectors for 2023 to ensure employees of both sectors have equal time off.
      Below, Emirates Woman outlines the official public holidays in the UAE for 2023.
      New Year’s Day
      There will be an official holiday to mark the first day of the calendar year – January 1, 2023.
      Eid Al Fitr
      The first day of Ramadan is predicted to fall around March 22, 2023, in the Gregorian calendar. The UAE cabinet confirmed Eid Al Fitr will be from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3. Per the Gregorian calendar, this will likely be from April 20 to April 23, 2023 with dates subject to the moon sighting.
      Arafah Day & Eid Al Adha
      A couple of months after Eid Al Fitr, the UAE will observe another public holiday, Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha will be from Dhul Hijjah 9 to Dhul Hijjah 12. This could potentially be a six-day break, making it the longest holiday next year from Tuesday, June 27 to Friday, June 30.
      Hijri New Year
      Hijiri or Islamic New Year falls on will fall on July 21, 2023, which will mean a three-day weekend for UAE citizens and residents.
      Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday
      The Prophet Mohammed’s birthday will fall on the 12 of the Hijri month of Rabi Al Awwal, which will be September 29, 2023. This is a Friday, so it could be a three-day weekend for residents.
      Commemoration Day and National Day
      To close out 2023, those in the UAE will have another break to look forward to with Commemoration Day, December 1, and National Day, December 2 and December 3.

      As always, the final and official dates and public holiday eligibility for public sector employees and private sector employees are always determined by UAE authorities.
