The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) in the UAE has announced a crucial update regarding travel requirements for pilgrims embarking on the sacred journeys of Umrah and Hajj. Effective March 26, all individuals undertaking these pilgrimages are now mandated to receive the influenza vaccination.
This decision underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of pilgrims, their families, and the wider community.
Travellers bound for Saudi Arabia must present valid vaccination cards as proof of compliance with the new regulation. The move comes as part of comprehensive preventive measures aimed at curbing the spread of infectious diseases and ensuring the safety of all participants in these religious expeditions.

In alignment with these directives, the Ministry of Health has emphasized the importance of adhering to vaccination protocols and other health precautions. This proactive approach not only mitigates health risks among pilgrims but also contributes to the overall resilience of the community against communicable illnesses.
Crucially, individuals who have received the influenza vaccine within the past year are exempt from the requirement to obtain a new vaccination. This exemption acknowledges the efforts of those who have already taken steps to protect themselves and others from the flu.
To facilitate compliance with the new regulation, approved vaccination cards can be conveniently accessed through the Al Hosn application. Pilgrims are advised to ensure that they possess valid documentation before embarking on their journey and to present it at travel checkpoints as required.
The implementation of mandatory flu shots for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims underscores the proactive stance of UAE authorities in promoting public health and safety. By prioritizing preventive measures and vaccination efforts, the nation reaffirms its commitment to fostering a healthy environment for all members of society, particularly during times of heightened pilgrimage activity.

This update allows travellers to explore the Kingdom and it’s rich heritage. To take advantage of this opportunity, eligible visitors must pay a $117 visa fee, which includes health insurance coverage. Those interested in applying for a visa on arrival can easily navigate the process on Saudi Arabia’s official eVisa website.
What is Umrah, the Islamic pilgrimage?

Umrah, also referred to as the ‘lesser pilgrimage’ or ‘minor pilgrimage’, entails a visit to the Holy Ka’aba, the Sacred Home of God. This sacred practice is open to Muslims throughout the year. In Islamic terms, Umrah involves performing Tawaf around the Holy Ka’aba and Sa’i between the hills of Safa and Marwah while in a state of Ihram, signifying a sacred commitment.
The core purpose of undertaking Umrah is to establish a connection with Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala – Glory to Him, the exalted), attain His pleasure, and reap the abundant rewards tied to this act of devotion. Through this spiritual journey, individuals cleanse their body, heart, soul, and mind from their past transgressions.
