COVID-19 in the UAE: Authorities urge public not to be lenient with guidelines

While the UAE has returned to a resemblance of normality, health authorities have urged the public to be stringent when it comes to following guidelines to curb the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a media briefing, Dr. Omar Al Hammadi, an official spokesperson for the UAE government, highlighted that undervaluing the current restrictions and guidelines in place could be dangerous.
“Underestimating preventive measures and being lenient is extremely dangerous, so let us support the efforts of our country with our awareness and commitment to preventive measures to curb this epidemic,” he said.
However, Al Hammadi also noted that the death rate has fallen to 0.3 per cent, being the “lowest in the world”.
While this is the case, it was reiterated that masks still need to be worn at all times when applicable, social distancing measures must be adhered to and the public needs to be aware and to continue to act responsibly.
To date, the UAE has had 178,837 confirmed cases of COVID-19 – 17,946 of which are currently active and there have been 596 deaths.

There have been some updates made for those travelling from the GCC into Dubai

As travel continues to slowly go back to a resemblance of normal, there have been some changes made to the requirements for some travellers entering Dubai.

Per Gulf News, there was an update made by Dubai Airports stating that “effective from December 6, all passengers arriving (originating) from GCC countries are not required to conduct PCR test before arriving at DXB/DWC [Dubai International Airport/Al Maktoum International Airport]”.
This means those travelling to Dubai from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman via plane no longer need to take a COVID-19 PCR prior to travelling and can get one upon arrival in the emirate.
READ: The ultimate no quarantine list of destinations for UAE residents to travel to
However, it should be noted that this change to travel requirements is only applicable to those passengers travelling by air. Per the Emirates Airline website, it’s stated that these travel updates are “not applicable to passengers arriving by road through the Hatta border, who must take the PCR test 96 hours from the date of the test before departure”.
This change for the GCC countries comes after it was announced in October that those arriving from the UK and Germany could be tested upon arrival at Dubai airport.
Even more recently, the UAE was taken off the UK’s mandatory 14-day quarantine list for incoming travellers. So, those travelling to the UK from Dubai or Abu Dhabi will no longer have to self-isolate.
As always though, ensure you contact your airline for the most up-to-date travel information.
