The special Arabic meaning behind Gigi and Zayn’s baby girl’s name

Four months after keeping their baby girl’s name hush hush, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik revealed what they decided to call their first child together.
Subtly announcing her baby girl’s name, the model updated her Instagram bio saying, “Khai’s mom.” So, after calling her baby Hadid-Malik for months, we finally now know she’s Khai – and it’s a super adorable and unique name.

However, there’s also a truly special meaning behind baby Khai’s name.
Not only does Khai mean “crowned” in Arabic, the name was also chosen as it pays tribute to her late grandmother, Khairia, on her father Mohamed Hadid’s side of the family, according to TMZ.

Hadid’s father has previously claimed his late mother descended from royalty. “Her great grandfather was the Prince of Nazareth – King of Galilee in the 18th century Daher Al-Omer The Ruler,” he previously said.
    Palestinian heritage
The model is of Dutch heritage on her mother’s side, and Palestinian heritage on her father’s side – something she and her siblings, Bella and Anwar, are very proud of.

Late last year, Mohamed reflected on his childhood hardships having to flee his home country when he was just a baby, and becoming a refugee along with his other family members.
Sharing a picture from his younger years, Hadid explained that he doesn’t have “a single picture of me [as] when I was a baby I was just about 9 days old when I and my family were refugees to the refugee camps in Syria from Palestine”.
He shared his thanks to Syria, Lebanon and Tunisia and most of all Jordan, where he and his family received Jordanian citizenship many years ago. He also shared his gratitude for being able to relocate to the USA with his family.
    Welcoming their new baby girl
Hadid and Malik announced the birth of their first-born via social media back in September.
The new mum took to Instagram to announce the news shortly sharing a sweet photo of her daughter’s hand.

“Our girl joined us earth-side this weekend and she’s already changed our world,” she captioned the photo. “So in love.”
While the new mum has now revealed her baby girl’s name to the world, she’s still keeping her face hidden from the public view to protect her privacy, something which she has done throughout her pregnancy.
    The pregnancy announcement
Hadid’s pregnancy was first reported on back in April 2020. However, the model first spoke of her pregnancy – news which was revealed in the press and not by Gigi or Zayn – during a video call appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, admitting they would have liked to reveal the news on their “own terms”, but also thanked everyone for their congratulations.
“Obviously, we wish we could’ve announced it on our own terms, but we’re very excited and happy and grateful for everyone’s well wishes and support,” she said.
