Today, May 31, 2023, we celebrate International Flight Attendant Day.
Balancing two careers doesn’t come easy, but Emirates cabin crew members show us how it’s done.
From launching their own fashion labels to jewellery brands, these talented individuals have made a mark for themselves beyond the world of aviation.
To champion these talented cabin crew members, Emirates Woman has curated a list of flight attendants who prove that you can do both.
    Luciana Tanase

Besides her full-time career as an Emirates cabin crew member, Luciana Tanase has also founded her own fashion label, I-LO. This Romanian-based fashion label offers an array of everyday wardrobe staples such as crop tops and partywear pieces. With a passion for travelling, she’s managed to garner a massive fan base and dedicate time to growing her fashion brand’s presence online.
    Yassmine El Kholy

With a passion for yoga and other meditation practices such as sound healing, Yassmine Elkholy is a part-time yoga instructor and an Emirates cabin crew member. She has been part of several campaigns for brands such as Reebok and Alo Yoga, making a mark for herself in the world of fitness. With a focus on complicated poses, she has garnered a dedicated audience who are keen to learn about the practice.
    Maria Soldatova

With over 11 years of flying experience, Maria Soldatova is a long-standing Emirates cabin crew member. With her dedicated love for travelling, Soldatova decided to launch her own jewellery brand, Zoldi Jewels, designed with all the wanderlust inspiration. The pieces consist of airplanes, seashells, a map and various countries she’s visited around the globe. The pieces are sustainably produced in a conscious environment for the workers. As an entrepreneur, she has learned the art of dedicating her efforts to both her profession and brand.
    Danai

Danai has visited over 48 countries as an Emirates flight attendant. Originally from Greece, she has established herself as a travel content creator with her pictures from around the globe. From surfing to skydiving, she’s always on a mission to try out new activities while sharing her fashion inspiration. Her loyal fan base is always keen to see where she’s off to next and what her outfits are.
    Margot

With long-haul flights and numerous hours spent on air, Margot started her own YouTube channel and is now a part-time vlogger. With all the new countries she has visited, she shares snippets of her life as a cabin crew member, her channel has reached over 51,000 subscribers.
    Hana Brvar

This Slovenian cabin crew member has travelled to a host of countries around the world. After pursuing her law degree, she decided to become a full-time flight attendant and makes time for her hobby as a professional ski instructor. From Portugal to Sri Lanka, she has seen the world and constantly shares photos of her travel experiences.
    Olia Podvolotskaya

Podvolotskaya wears many hats. Along with being an Emirates cabin crew, she has been a dancer for 18 years and is also a part-time English and German teacher and interpreter. In May 2022, she officially completed her training programme and is now a full-time flight attendant for Emirates.

How this one-of-a-kind resort in Dubai promises the ultimate getaway

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

Sabri Thani, Director of Marketing and Communications at Lapita Dubai Parks and Resorts, Autograph Collection Hotels on bringing Polynesian hospitality to the forefront.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like – your morning routine?
I set aside something to help me prepare for the day ahead so that I can show up with the best version of myself. I go through the day’s tasks and note down important things that need to get done while sipping on some coffee or tea and sitting down to enjoy a good breakfast.
    Talk us through your career.
If you look closely at my career, you will start to notice a pattern – I thrive on the frontlines and am drawn to working with good people and organisations that let me do meaningful work. Before joining Lapita Dubai Parks and Resorts as Director of Marketing and Communications, I was the Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing and was then promoted to Director of Corporate Communications at Majid Al Futtaim.
What is your role as Director of Marketing and Communications?
In my mind, marketing and communications are both an art as well as a science. I start with strategy and then explore the stories that will help consumers resonate with our message and goals. As a director, I lead the marketing and communications team at Lapita Dubai. This means that I oversee the strategic development and execution of all creative media. I lead the team in executing public relations plans and email campaigns that enhance the Marri- ott brand, offset competitor activities, and maximise regional marketing opportunities – including for Marriot Bonvoy, Marriott Rewards, and other strategic partners.

Lapita is Dubai’s first theme park hotel – tell us more.
Lapita is a unique, family-friendly Polynesian resort – we are the only hotel within Dubai Parks and Resorts where guests receive direct access to all theme parks, including Legoland, MotionGate, and River- land. Dedicated to celebrating the spirit of the Polynesian islands, guests can take in the detailed, Polynesian-inspired architecture and landscaping across the resort – a beautiful complement to an already-picturesque and serene experience. We enhance the experience with elevated comfort and décor in all accommodations, with soft lighting, Polyne- sian designs, private balconies or terraces, and marble bathrooms. The private villas provide extra space, with a pool and garden that boast stunning views. Guests can choose between four excellent dining establishments or unwind at the on-site spa. Lapita also offers numerous activities to thrill the hearts of anyone enjoying a stay at the resort, making it the perfect family destination.
What are the innovative facilities on board that set this hotel apart?
We are the first and only Polynesian resort in Dubai with a daily sunset ritual – known as the Ahi Ahi ceremony – and classically trained Polynesian artists. We are not just Polynesian themed – we in- corporate all aspects of Polynesian culture into our resort and take every chance to educate our guests on its heritage and traditions. From greeting guests with garlands and drinks, to ensuring that our staff can identify and cater to individual needs, we always aim to create the best possible experience for all visitors. Every detail at Lapita Dubai is designed to transport guests to the exotic islands of Polynesia. A kids and teens club – paired with a lazy river and themed activities at the Lapita centre – help create opportunities to make fun memories with the family. Another thing that sets us apart is that with any booking, guests receive entry tickets to one of the theme parks under Dubai Parks and Resorts – this is standard regardless of the duration of stay or accommodation type. The resort also offers a dedicated conference centre with a 710sqm ballroom, six meeting rooms and event facilities, and an additional 26,296 square feet of flexible space for all occasions, making it the best escape for corporate team building sessions due to its nature and serene environment.
What are the key culinary offerings that the resort has to offer?
Lapita Dubai has four dining establishments that provide a diverse range of culinary options for guests to choose from. ARI, a poolside restaurant and bar, allows guests to soak up the sun while enjoying drinks and dishes from an exclusive menu – including the likes of a Tahiti Sling, a delicious concoction of pineapple, lemon, lychee, and passionfruit – and the Polynesian seafood soup with a medley of seafood in a coconut broth. PALAMA is the resort’s lobby lounge and has a continental menu featuring a broad range of mocktails and dishes. Guests can unwind at this social hub with family and friends. Our KALEA restaurant offers an all-day dining buffet experience, where guests can choose to dine under traditional waka canoes or enjoy the views of the resort from the terrace. KALEA also hosts Polynesian-themed nights every Friday and Saturday – a fun experience for all guests and diners. Hikina is a South- East Asian restaurant that boasts a menu packed with explosive flavours. Diners can savour authentic dishes such as Tom Kha Gai or treat their sweet tooth’s with desserts like Pandan Cheesecake.
How has the group undertaken a sustainable approach as the UAE is gearing towards the same?
At Lapita, we believe that sustainability is important for everyone and every business. While it is great to see that more people are becoming aware of environmental issues, I want to note that it is extremely important to first understand the ways in which we can help the environment, rather than applying practices that may not have the best result. At Lapita, we collaborated with Simply Bottles to implement a recycling programme for plastic bottles. The recycled bottles are turned into clothes, caps, and bags to contribute to a zero-waste environment. We also have around 90 to 95 solar panels that produce renewable energy for water heating in guests’ rooms.

Are there any recent collaborations that have stood out?
We recently collaborated with the Fijian embassy, which saw the arrival of classically trained Polynesian artists at Lapita Dubai, to re-launch our Ahi Ahi Ceremony and introduce people to more of the Polynesian culture. The Polynesian evening event held on March 9, 2023 was a huge success, with numerous media and influencers attending to enjoy the traditional performances and witness the Ahi Ahi Ceremony – a sunset ritual that welcomes the setting sun – with a specially curated spread pro- vided by KALEA Restaurant. The event demonstrated our commitment to spread- ing awareness around Polynesian culture, helping to highlight the daily performances at the resort and the appreciation for tradition embodied by everyone at Lapita Dubai.
What are the future plans for the resort and the hotel?
While there are no concrete plans at the moment, we are always looking to in- novate and elevate our resort in order to pro- vide our guests with a seamless experience. We also look forward to introducing a Tiki Hut in the near future, which will be a fun space for children to play and learn in with the support of the resort’s Polynesian artists. What small things elevate your life? It would definitely be seeing the smiles on my guests’ faces, or the moment when I see one of my ideas come to life and realise the difference it makes to our guests and the resort. While at work, I also take small moments to enjoy the natural environment outside – the resort is absolutely gorgeous, so I try to make the most of it.

12 incredible women on optimising time and using it wisely

12 incredible women talk to Emirates Woman on how they optimise time and what wisdom time has brought to their lives.
Tania Santos Silva (Founder of Lala Diamonds)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
This is a very therapeutic question. There’s so much I would like to tell the young Tania. First thing would be: you’re loved – they’re doing the best they can with what they have and know. Be more selfish and less available – definitely learn to say “No.” Finish law school instead of swapping to journalism – don’t be lazy! Do a master’s in communications after. Don’t waste so much time seeking validation or perhaps, love more, live more, be more careless and regret nothing. After all, your path led you here, Tania, you’re being featured in Emirates Woman, you’re doing great.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
This is a tricky one. Lately, I’ve been super focused on my time, family and people. I don’t waste any more time with what doesn’t suit me, nor do I adapt my time to others. The last three months have been life-changing; honestly, right now, as I answer this, I’m all about healing and journaling and using my time wisely and prioritizing. If I’m not in the mood, I won’t stay longer or go. My time is priceless. I prioritise what I have to do each week in terms of meetings – in-person or online, personal appointments and errands, laptop work, or workshop work. Of course, I always find time to see my friends, go to the gym, do leisure and work travels and so on. I also include my goals for the week, which is always there because if I don’t reach them, they pass to the following week’s schedule. I always anticipate some roadblocks on the way. The trick here is to spend your time wisely with intent. We all have different definitions of time, so the best way to have a more common meaning is to spend quality time doing what you love and with the people you love. Don’t forget your tasks – goals and responsibilities.
Sara Rahbari (Founder Of Chic Le Frique)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
Well, going back in time is certainly not an option. That might not necessarily be a bad thing because if we could, we might never be able to experience all the ups and downs and ride all those learning curves that life throws at us. So, my advice to my younger self would be not to worry and stress as much as I did. Keep living life and taking in all the experiences on this journey to evolve into a better human being.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
I actually think time cannot be looked at as currency. Time is definitely way more precious. It is the one thing that you cannot make more of. Therefore, it is extremely important for me to organize my time during the day to find the right balance between my family, myself and my work. Although I have to admit it. That is easier said than done.
Lama Jouni (Founder Of Fashion Label Lama Jouni)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I believe we tend to overthink and worry about the future too much but in the end, everything will happen to our own benefit.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
I try to use time with balance. Meaning I like my days to be versatile and not only focused on work.
Lindsay Doran (Founder Of Activewear Brand L’Couture)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I like to live my life with no regrets, but I would tell my younger self to trust the journey, to always believe in myself and know that things always work out the way they are supposed to. Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? Being an entrepreneur and busy mum of three, life is always hectic. Training is a huge part of my life and a non-negotiable in my daily schedule, so my days are usually planned out meticulously to ensure I fit this in around time with my kids and time at the office. I have to really plan everything out so I can ensure I have time to fit everything in. There are never enough hours in the day but sticking to a plan really is the only way it all happens.
Rawdha Thani (Founder Of Fashion Label Illi)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I would tell my younger self to be less critical of herself and not be as tough on herself. I feel like sometimes I was hard on myself when I was doing the best I could in many aspects, but I always felt like I needed to do more. One more thing, I wish I did not give myself deadlines for things before reaching a certain age, there is no timeline to doing things and there is no age limit to when to accomplish things.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
I am guilty of planning my week ahead and logging everything into my calendar, so I hold myself accountable and because I’m very forgetful. I find this really helps me organize my time. I’m also very good at taking time off for myself when needed, especially lately which gets me very motivated and fuels me with energy.
    Caroline Receveur (Entrepreneur)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I would tell her to dare and go for what she believes in, without worrying about what other people think as long as it makes sense to her. I would tell her to always be grateful, even for the mistakes and bad encounters, because that’s the only way to learn. And most importantly, I would tell her to always trust her intuition and follow her heart.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
I try to organize my time around the things and people who make me feel good, so I can nourish myself with good energies and give it back.
    Amanda Rushforth (Sustainable Content Creator)
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I would honestly say to myself that there’s a much bigger picture to look at and that we have a lifetime to achieve our goals, enjoy being in the moment. I would also tell myself to put down my phone, worry less, travel more and ask more questions. I loved school and sports and often wish I could go back to reliving that team spirit.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
I have a very clear list of priorities and my family is at the top, so I make sure that my time is always time well spent. I also make sure I carve out time for myself as our health is our greatest asset.
Tutus Kurniati (Founder of Tutus Kurniati boutique)
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. It’s natural to feel apprehensive about trying new things, but taking calculated risks is often necessary for personal and professional growth. When you make mistakes and you will make mistakes, don’t be too hard on yourself. This is the time to make mistakes. Instead, try to learn from them and use them as opportunities for growth and self-improvement.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
Prioritise and invest in learning. Make a list of tasks that need to be done and prioritise them based on importance and urgency. Focus on completing the most important tasks first. Use your time to learn new skills or knowledge that will benefit you in the long run that helps to achieve your goals.
Sonia Leretz (Co-Founder And Managing Partner, Revalue Consulting)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I lookback and think that when we are young, there is no escape but to live with what life throws at us because we have very little control at the time. Life back then resembles a flipper game, where we are the flipper ball. It’s part of the process to play the game, and my advice would be to take distance from reality, and grasp time to better anticipate, play the game, with the cards aligned with my aspirations.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
I perceive time as a resource, as a process to be nurtured. I will not perceive time as a constraint, or something that will make me accelerate. In the contrary, I will give time to time: to better invest myself in what I do and with whom I share my time with, with the objective to always absorb the present.
Nadine Kanso (Founder of Jewellery Brand bil Arabi)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
My advice to my younger self would be to be bolder and less shy. One should not try to change things. As I am a true believer in what is meant to be, will be. When we are young, we frequently have a fearless attitude and a willingness to take risks, which can help us achieve our goals and objectives. That is particularly why my advice to my younger self would be to be more courageous. However, as we age, we can become more hesitant and risk-averse, which can cause us to miss out on chances. I believe it is critical to nurture afearless and open mindset. That includes being willing to take calculated risks, try new things, and pursue our passions even if they appear intimidating at first. Of course, being bold does not imply being irresponsible or ignoring the dangers and drawbacks of a decision. However, it does include being willing to move outside of our comfort zones and take actions toward our goals, even if we are unsure of the outcome. Taking a chance and being brave when it counts, in my experience, leads to some of the most gratifying opportunities and experiences in life. So, my advice to everyone, young or old, is to keep an open mind, to be interested and to never be scared to take a bet on yourself and your ambitions.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
Time is life. Our whole lives are measured against time, which makes it that much more precious. Time is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable commodities we have in life. We can’t earn more time or get it back after it’s gone, unlike money. That is why it is critical to be careful of how we use our time and to ensure that we are utilizing it in ways that are consistent with our beliefs and aspirations. Time, in my opinion, is not a currency, rather it is a currency of sorts, and it’s up to each of us to decide how we want to spend it. That means being intentional about setting priorities, making time for the people and activities that matter most to us, and avoiding distractions or timewasters that don’t add value to our lives. Ultimately, I believe that time is a precious gift, that we should enjoy and make the most of. That might mean being more mindful of how we use our time, setting clearer priorities, or making changes to our daily routines and habits to better align with our goals and values. But whatever we do, it’s important to remember that time is a finite resource, and we should use it wisely.
    Sumayyah Al Suwaidi (Talented Artist)

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
Believe in yourself and your capabilities, be true to yourself and throw the word fear out of the window.
Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely?
I divide my time between my loved ones and work. I do my best to balance to the point that I don’t feel like I am working anymore. It is just so integrated into my life that even when I am working it feels like a normal casual day.
Nayla Albaloushi (First Emirati Woman To Scale Mount Everest)
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I don’t have any advice for my younger self. I have lived every stage in my life and enjoyed every single part of it. I wouldn’t change or do anything differently.
Time is your greatest currency – How do you use your time wisely?
I start my morning early to do Fajer prayer then choose an activity depending on the weather, and after that I go to work. During the evening time, I enjoy unwinding at home and that’s how my day ends.
