UAE National Day holiday update: Will there be a three-day weekend?

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

The UAE is gearing up for a festive season, with official announcements regarding the holidays for UAE National Day.
Private sector employees are in for a treat as Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3, have been declared paid holidays. However, for those accustomed to a traditional Saturday-Sunday weekend, the excitement might be tempered by the lack of an extended break.
There’s still hope for a prolonged weekend, though. Alongside UAE National Day, the country observes Commemoration Day (formerly known as Martyrs’ Day) at the end of November.

We announce that 2nd & 3rd December 2023 will be a paid public holiday for private sector workers in the UAE on the occasion of the 52nd UAE National Day.
We extend our sincere congratulations to our wise leadership, citizens and residents of the UAE on this occasion.#MoHRE… pic.twitter.com/rjpBFvZ6Rl
    — وزارة الموارد البشرية والتوطين (@MOHRE_UAE) November 22, 2023

Officially on November 30, the commemoration is often observed on December 1. This year, falling on a Friday, there’s anticipation that it might turn into a three-day weekend. Await updates from the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation to confirm if Commemoration Day will also be a paid public holiday.
Commemoration Day, instituted in 2015 by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, serves as a poignant day to honor those who sacrificed their lives in military and humanitarian endeavors, both at home and abroad.
As the UAE marks its 52nd year since formation in 1971, the entire nation will be adorned in the vibrant colors of the UAE flag – red, green, white, and black. While specific plans for the UAE National Day celebrations are yet to be disclosed, citizens and residents can anticipate a myriad of activities. Stay tuned for staycation deals, enticing dining offers, discounts on family-friendly attractions, and more.
The country is poised to come alive with a patriotic spirit, showcasing the unity and pride of the diverse community that calls the UAE home.

Eid Al Adha 2023: UAE residents to potentially have a six-day long weekend

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Dealing with holiday blues after the Eid Al-Fitr weekend? Fret not, the next long break is just around the corner.
According to UAE’s official calendar of public holidays, the next potential holiday will fall on the Day of Arafah and Eid Al Adha. As per the Islamic calendar, it will fall between Zul Hijjah 9 to 12, resulting in a four-day long break. But since these dates are chalked right before the weekend, residents of UAE might just enjoy a hefty break of six days.
Based on Astronomy expert Ibrahim Al Jarwan’s video, the Islamic month of Zul Hijjah will begin on Monday, June 19. Which means, Eid Al Adha will most likely be on Wednesday, June 28. The Day of Arafah falls a day prior and will be potentially observed on Tuesday, June 27.
Keeping all the significant dates in mind, the Eid Al Adha break in UAE might begin from Tuesday, June 27  to Friday, June 30 — the weekend addition will extend the holiday by two extra days.
Although, just like every other Islamic holiday, the confirmation of this depends on the moon-sighting.
Now that you have a head start, plan your next vacation accordingly. To make the rest of your year hassle-free here is the complete list of remaining holidays for the year 2023.

However, the moon-sighting committee will convene on the night Ramadan 29 to confirm the dates of Eid. Depending on this, the holiday could begin from Thursday, April 20 and run until Sunday, April 23, with regular working hours then resuming on Monday, April 24, 2023.
How long is the break for?
The Eid Al Fitr holiday will begin on Thursday April 20 in the UAE.
This completely depends on when the moon is sighted The start date of the break does not depend on when the moon is sighted as Ramadan 29 falls on April 20. If the moon is spotted on that night, the break is from Thursday, April 20, until Sunday, April 23.
If the moon is not seen on that night, residents will have an additional day off since Ramadan 30 will also be a holiday. It’s still yet to be confirmed by the sighting of the moon as to whether the Eid break will be four or five days, but work will resume either on Monday April 24 or Tuesday April 25, depending on whether Ramadan is 29 or 30 days.
    What is Eid Al Fitr?
In the Islamic Calendar, Eid Al Fitr marks the official end of Ramadan and is the first day of Shawwal. During the Holy Month Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset for around 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon. Eid Al Fitr marks the end of fasting, and literally translates in English to the “feast of breaking the fast”.
