Zendaya and Tom Holland are engaged: Wedding bells for Spider-Man and MJ

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

The internet has been buzzing, and multiple sources are confirming what many suspected: Zendaya and Tom Holland are reportedly engaged! The news broke after Zendaya’s appearance at the 2025 Golden Globes, where a certain sparkling rock on that finger set the rumor mill churning.
If you like it, put a ring on it, Tom Holland sure did

It all started with a diamond. This dazzling gem, spotted on Zendaya’s left ring finger, immediately ignited a frenzy of online sleuthing. Internet detectives quickly identified it as a 5.02-carat East-West Cushion Diamond Button Back Ring from Jessica McCormack, a piece reportedly worth anywhere between $100,000 and $500,000. Talk about a statement piece.

TMZ reported that Holland popped the question between Christmas and New Year’s at one of Zendaya’s family homes in the United States. The proposal was described as “very romantic and intimate,” a fittingly private moment for a couple who value their privacy. It was also revealed that Holland had sought and received the blessing of Zendaya’s father, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, months prior. How sweet is that?
Zendaya and Tom Holland’s endearing love story

From on-screen love interests in the Spider-Man films to real-life sweethearts, Zendaya and Holland’s relationship has blossomed beautifully. Their connection first sparked during the filming of Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016, forging a strong friendship that eventually evolved into romance. While rumors swirled for years, they officially confirmed their relationship in 2021, much to the delight of fans. They’ve since become a beloved celebrity couple, admired for their genuine affection for one another and their commitment to keeping their personal life relatively private. They’ve shared sweet glimpses of their relationship on social media, celebrating birthdays and supporting each other’s career milestones, but have largely managed to maintain a sense of normalcy despite the intense public scrutiny.
All about the most-awaited celebrity wedding

This engagement marks a new chapter for the couple, and fans are already buzzing with excitement. While wedding planning is reportedly on hold due to their busy schedules, one can only imagine the stunning wedding that awaits. And let’s not forget the all-important question: what kind of breathtaking wedding dress will Law Roach, Zendaya’s stylist extraordinaire, create?

For now, we’re sending our warmest congratulations to the happy couple. May their future be filled with as much sparkle as that incredible engagement ring.

Effective tips on how to healthily navigate through a career burnout

Experiencing career burnout can be incredibly challenging. It’s a feeling of being emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted due to prolonged stress.
Dr Gurveen Ranger, Clinical Psychologist, Lead for Corporate Wellbeing and Adult Mental Health at Sage Clinics, on recognising the signs of career burnout.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine?
The first 30 minutes of my day involves hitting the snooze button acouple of times, so I get up gradually. I try to start the day mindfully – so I avoid looking at my phone until I have left the house and focus on getting ready. Half the week I start work a little later, so I start my day with some form of exercise at home, and I find I have a bit more energy for the rest of the day.
    Talk us through you career.
I decided I wanted to be a psychologist when I was about 16 years old, doing my college A Level in Psychology. Prior to this I knew nothing about it and thought I was going to be a journalist! Learning about the psychological theories got me hooked on the subject, and I found it fascinating learning about how the brain and our minds can work. This, coupled with a desire to help people meant it was the perfect career for me to pursue and find meaning in. After my undergraduate degree in Psychology, I worked in various NHS establishments in the UK, gaining experience in the mental health field so I could eventually pursue the doctoral clinical psychology training. I have always loved to be challenged, and so after several years working post doctorate in a service for people with severe and enduring mental health difficulties, I decided the next challenge was to move here to the UAE and be part of establishing a new clinic – in a region where narratives around mental health are progressing but still in their relative infancy. I have enjoyed the work we are doing to raise awareness about mental health and have ended up specialising in corporate wellbeing, recognising the significant need for this in the UAE.
What are the key symptoms of a career burnout?
Career burnout means emotional, physical and mental exhaustion from prolonged stress or dissatisfaction in your career. The key signs include physical exhaustion, where you may notice you feel exhausted, no matter how much sleep you get, and emotional exhaustion, which leaves you feeling overwhelmed, cynical, and detached from your work and colleagues. You may notice a feeling of dread when you wake in the morning which lingers throughout the day. Thirdly, mental exhaustion where you may notice a decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and concentration, increased absenteeism that leads to burnout along with an increase in sick days and a decrease in productivity and lastly decreased motivation, where burnout can lead to a lack of enthusiasm and interest in work, which can impact your performance. You may notice getting less of a sense of achievement in your work, or feel like you are not good enough regardless of your actual accomplishments and therefore feel less inclined to put the work in.
How is the mind and body interconnected – can stress lead to adverse affects in the body?
Absolutely, there is a lot of research on the impact of stress on the body. When we are stressed, we are often in fight or flight mode – our threat response, and the brain releases more stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help the body deal with the stressor. Whilst helpful in a dangerous situation, when it is activated frequently by chronic stressors we start to see an impact on the body. Such impact includes headaches, muscle tension and soreness, digestive issues, and overall weakened immune function to name a few. There is also an impact on our sleep, concentration, and our emotions – for example heightened anxiety, and our emotions are experienced physically in our bodies. A little more indirectly when we are stressed, we tend to engage in less self-care, so our diet may change, we may exercise less, and this will have an impact on our bodies too. So, when I work with clients on stress management, we look at it from both psychological and physiological perspectives.
What’s the best technique to regulate during a stressful situation?
During a specific stressful situation grounding can be really helpful in the moment. This might be focusing on your five senses (the 54321 exercise is good – name in your mind five things you can see around you, four things you can touch – really feel them, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste). This helps us “drop and anchor” and get present in a moment when our thoughts and emotions may be overwhelming and racing. Deep breathing is also a good in-themoment strategy, as our breathing is often dysregulated during the threat response. Breathing in to a count of four and out to a count of six is a good way to do this, and ensure your abdomen is moving more than your chest – so you know you are taking a good, full breath. You can place one hand on your stomach and one hand on your chest as you breathe to help determine this. More broadly, meditative exercises can be helpful to practice regularly to manage stress. Mindfulness meditation and relaxation meditation are a couple of ways of doing this and you can typically find good audios or scripts online.

How important is it to set healthy boundaries at work?
It is essential to set healthy boundaries at work to ensure a healthy work/life balance and prevent burnout. When we don’t have healthy boundaries, we often feel overwhelmed, resentful, and frustrated. Healthy boundaries also help us feel more fulfilled – by only taking on what we have capacity to do, we end up feeling more motivated and satisfied, as we are able to give full attention to what we are doing – so you end up focusing on quality of work rather than purely quantity of output where we feel like we are working hard never achieving anything that feels “good enough.”
What are some of the top selfcare practices that can be incorporated in our busy schedules?
Protect break times – block this time in your diary, even if it is only 30 minutes. We often tell ourselves we don’t have time, but research indicates we are actually more productive when we take breaks. If you can, move away from your desk for your break. Start and leave work on time as much as possible – I know many people who use their morning commute to catch up on emails, which means they are often in ‘threat mode’ before they even get to work. Using this time to be more mindful – focusing on surroundings or listening to something like a podcast or music can help us start the day in a more grounded way. Same for after work – hide away your laptop so it is out of sight and plan something else – relaxing, social, or active! If you absolutely have to check emails in the evenings, set limits on when and how often you do this. Aim for a routine as schedules may be very busy, having a regular sleep/ wake time can be really helpful for our wellbeing, alongside regular balanced meals. It may not be possible to get to a gym multiple times a week when you are so busy but a short walk or a 20-minute home workout are also great – anything to kick start the endorphins. Connect to others – colleagues, friends and family members, social connection can go a long way for stress management. If you are short on time you could combine – so meet a friend but go for a walk or activity together so you are socialising and getting some exercise in at the same time. Lastly, stress management techniques are important – as mentioned before, learning to be more mindful is a key way of managing stress. Alongside this, relaxation strategies as well as engaging in leisure activities as mentioned above are all key parts of stress management. If you are noticing the signs of stress or burnout and would like some help in managing this, I would recommend speaking to a therapist.
Many employees are navigating through the imposter syndrome – how can this affect our mental health?
Impostor syndrome, whilst not a ‘clinical’ diagnosis is so common in all walks of life, and I see it a lot in my corporate clients. No matter how successful they are or how much they have achieved, there is this pervasive self-doubt – questioning their accomplishments, skills and talents and this persistent fear of being “found out” to be a fraud or not good enough. I often see this in new mums too. This pulls us into overworking, comparing themselves to others, and downplaying achievements. Understandably, this can impact our mental health, and often co-exists alongside depression or anxiety for example. This then becomes self-perpetuating, as the more we believe we are not good enough, the more we dismiss positive feedback, avoid things, or self-criticise for making mistakes, and this then further impacts our mood and anxiety levels.
When should one seek for help during their career?
As early as possible. This way, you can access timely intervention which prevents the symptoms escalating into more chronic stress type difficulties and burnout. It also means you can catch certain unhelpful coping mechanisms like avoidance or overworking before they start to exacerbate the cycle of how you are feeling, and before they contribute to feeling disconnected from your career.
This is The Body Issue – what are your nonnegotiable self and body care practices?
Sleep! This is my number one rule. I know whenever I have a bad night’s sleep or have gone to sleep too late the knock-on effect on my concentration, mood, and productivity the next day is huge. I had to teach myself to reduce how much time I spent on my phone in the evenings, which was hard, but I got there eventually. Now I have a specific wind down routine, and screens are put away at least 30 minutes before I go to sleep. A balanced diet is important too. I have had to train myself on this too but having a routine where I prep everything in the evening and enough for a few days at a time has really helped, as the more stressed I am my default is convenience rather than nutrition, as is the case for many. Within this, I have also learned not to restrict anything, as actually that often leaves us feeling more stressed! Balance is key. It’s important to get regular health check-ups. I used to be someone who would dismiss symptoms and tell myself I didn’t have time to go for check-ups especially when I am too busy or stressed. But making time for this is not only essential from a health point of view, but also showing ourselves that we are worthy of self-care. When I work with clients who are coming for heightened anxiety or stress, I always recommend a routine physical health check-up if they haven’t had one for a long time, before we assume something like tiredness is solely related to stress, for example.

UAE experiences rainy weather and coldest day of winter

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

The United Arab Emirates experienced a bout of rainy weather and significantly cooler temperatures, marking the coldest day of the winter season so far. Rain fell across multiple emirates, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah, prompting safety warnings from authorities.

On Friday morning, many residents across the UAE woke up to rain, with some areas reporting lightning. The cold air was particularly noticeable in mountainous regions, with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) recording a low of 2.2°C on Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah at 6:45 am, the lowest temperature recorded this winter.

In Dubai, motorists navigated wet roads in areas such as Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah, Al Safa, and Al Jaddaf. The Dubai Police issued urgent safety advice to drivers, urging them to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from the road’s edge, use low-beam headlights, and ensure their windshield wipers were functioning correctly.

Light rain was also reported in other emirates, including Mohamed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Suhaila in Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain. Videos emerged showing strong winds and moderate rain in the Al Ghadeer area of Abu Dhabi, highlighting the varied weather conditions across the country.

The NCM provided further details about the weather patterns, forecasting partly cloudy to cloudy skies, particularly in northern, eastern, and coastal regions. Humidity was expected overnight and into Saturday morning in some inland areas, with a possibility of fog or mist formation.

Winds were predicted to be light to moderate, blowing from northwest to northeast at speeds of 15-30 km/h, occasionally gusting up to 40 km/h and causing blowing dust. The sea conditions were also affected, with rough to moderate conditions expected in the Arabian Gulf and moderate to slight conditions in the Oman Sea.

The rainy weather extended beyond Friday. Reports indicated light rain in parts of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah on previous days as well. The NCM reported rainfall in various locations on January 2nd, including Ghantout, Saih Sudaira, Al Faya Road in Abu Dhabi, Saih Al Salam in Dubai, and An Nayfah in Al Ain. Light rains also continued into the morning of January 3rd, affecting areas such as Mohamed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Al Jaddaf, Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah, Al Safa in Dubai, Suhaila and Al Dhaid in Sharjah, Al Rowdha in Umm Al Quwain, and Adhen in Ras Al Khaimah.

The NCM also forecasted the possibility of frozen precipitation, such as sleet or snow, over the northern mountains. This added another layer of complexity to the weather conditions, prompting further caution for those venturing into mountainous regions.

The highest expected temperatures were forecast to be between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius, while the lowest temperatures were expected to range from 11 to 16 degrees Celsius.

The Dubai Police reiterated their calls for caution on social media platform X, emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices during inclement weather. The combined effects of rain, wind, and cooler temperatures created challenging conditions for motorists and residents alike, underscoring the importance of heeding official warnings and taking necessary precautions.

Due to the current rainfall, we urge all road users in Dubai to drive cautiously and stay up-to-date with the latest weather conditions from official sources. #RoadSafety pic.twitter.com/SCLZ6oK4K9

Dubai’s leading mental health therapist shares how to protect your peace in 2025

How Dr. Saliha Afridi, Founder and Clinical Pyschologist at LightHouse Arabia, focuses on making a positive impact on the mental health of her community.
    Talk us through your background?
I am a clinical psychologist and the founder of the LightHouse Arabia which is a community mental health center in Dubai since 2011. Over the past decade, my focus has notably shifted towards adult development and navigating the personal and processional transitions of midlife. I specialised in workplace and executive mental health, and also deep-seated expertise in parenting strategies and dynamics. My transition from the US to the UAE over 15 years ago marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to significantly enhance the mental health landscape of the region. In 2011, I founded The LightHouse Arabia, and under my leadership, it has evolved into one of the most influential mental health centers in the UAE and the region. Since its inception, I, alongside my dedicated team, has devoted thousands of volunteer hours to community education, focusing on the cultivation of mental health and wellness best practices.
Can optimism influence physical health, and if so, how is it connected to mental well-being?
Absolutely. Our mind and body are connected. Our thoughts can even impact something as biological as our gut microbiome, which is deeply connected to our mental health. Research has consistently shown that optimism can lower stress levels, decrease the cortisol levels in your body, and thus, reduce inflammation in the body. With a reduction of cortisol and inflammation you are impacting nearly every organ and system in the body such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, strengthening the immune system, which can even lead to increased longevity. A positive mental outlook also encourages healthier habits, such as exercise, better nutrition, and improved sleep, all of which impact physical health.
What role does therapy or professional support play in helping someone develop optimism?
Working with a psychologist can be very helpful to develop optimism for a few reasons. Sometimes we don’t even know we are being negative and having our thoughts and feelings reflected back to us can make us more aware of how deep the beliefs that fuel the negativity might be. Learning skills such as techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy which makes you aware of your mental models, cognitive distortions as well as teach you skills of reframing, thought journaling, and thought stopping will help you challenge your negative thoughts and develop healthier more balanced ways of approaching life.
Therapy also provides tools to process traumas and other difficult life experiences, which can help heal parts of you that might be holding on to a negative outlook as a way of surviving. By working through these experiences, therapy allows you to release old patterns of thinking and coping that may no longer serve you. It helps you identify the origins of these beliefs, reframe your perspective, and build healthier, more adaptive ways of approaching life’s challenges.
Can social connections and community engagement enhance a strong mindset?
Research shows that there is a significant relationship between loneliness and pessimism, with loneliness often leading to a more negative outlook on life. A study involving 260 undergraduate students found that higher levels of loneliness were associated with increased pessimism and decreased optimism. Social connections help us feel more well resourced and that helps us feel stronger. Social connections help us feel more well-resourced, both emotionally and mentally, which in turn strengthens our ability to cope with challenges. When we feel connected, supported, and understood, we are reminded that we don’t have to face life’s difficulties alone. This sense of belonging and shared experience provides a buffer against stress and reduces feelings of isolation. Simply put, relationships serve as a source of strength, helping us feel grounded, supported, and better equipped to navigate life.
With the fast-paced culture, are there specific tools or techniques to manage stress, anxiety, or burnout effectively?
One of the most important things we can do to manage stress, anxiety, and burnout is to remember that we are human. There is no quick fix. We live in a world that is fast-paced and machine-like, but we are not machines. Our human bodies have evolved over thousands of years to thrive through simple, natural rhythms: moving, eating, sleeping, connecting. Our internal clock was once set by the sun, not a screen, and we existed in constant relationship with nature and our tribe/community. When you feel overwhelmed, burnt out, or unwell, instead of looking for quick fixes, pause and ask yourself:
How can I return to my natural rhythms? Are you getting enough sleep to restore your body and mind?  moving in ways that release tension and energy? Are you eating nourishing foods that fuel and heal? Are you connecting with others, or do you feel isolated? When was the last time you stepped outside, grounded yourself in nature, and slowed your pace? Our modern world may demand speed, but our bodies and souls still crave what we have always needed: rest, movement, nourishment, and connection. By returning to these essentials, we honour our humanity and reclaim balance, calm, and well-being.
How can people set boundaries to protect their mental health without feeling guilty?
It would be important for people to understand why they feel guilty when they set boundaries. It is too easy to say “just say no” or “have good boundaries” but there is a lot of cultural conditioning, especially for women, who are taught to say yes, extend themselves, sacrifice for the sake of relationship and be complaint. Saying no could go against everything you have been taught about what it means to be good and kind and can feel like a betrayal of this identity. For people who value relationships, this can trigger deep-seated fears of abandonment or not being loved. So before you say no, I would encourage people to reflect on: What does saying no mean to me? Identify the fears or beliefs that surface when you set boundaries.
Also, explore where these beliefs come from – family messages, cultural norms, or personal experiences. If you are just saying yes without consideration for yourself then you will eventually burnout or engage in unhealthy relational patterns. Boundaries are a form of self-respect and self-consideration. While, there will also be times where you will sacrifice your own needs to show up for a relationship and if that is done consciously you won’t be resentful than if you are doing it unconsciously.

How can technology, like apps or virtual therapy, help improve mental health access?
I am personally a big fan of in-person, nervous system to nervous system interaction in therapy, and using virtual apps and virtual therapy as an adjunct for inperson therapy. I think apps and virtual therapy are a great way to increase accessibility and the apps are a great way to provide out of the therapy hour support. Virtual therapy has made support more accessible for individuals who face barriers such as distance, stigma, or time constraints.
Are there specific habits or routines that foster a positive mental attitude?
I think it is really important to differentiate between positivity and realistic optimism. Realistic optimism is a well-researched concept in psychology and refers to the ability to maintain a hopeful and positive outlook while being grounded in reality. It is often seen as a middle ground between blind optimism (unrealistic positivity that ignores challenges) and pessimism (a focus on negative outcomes).I think positivity when disconnected from reality can be naïve and detrimental to people’s well-being. But doing a proper assessment of the situation, seeing the pros and cons, being aware of the challenges and obstacles paired with proactive planning in how you will address it is important. Realistic optimists acknowledge problems but believe in their ability to overcome them through action, effort, and adaptability. There are some specific habits one can engage in to foster the PMA:  Do a gratitude journal and let your heart fill with gratitude. Gratitude is a great way to fill your cup and the best part is that you don’t have to do anything other than name the things you appreciate about your life.
Memorise ‘wow’ moments throughout the day. There are many times a day where we experience something that is ‘wow’ or comforting or soothing. Take 20 seconds and memorise that moment. The thing with our minds is that its teflon for positive moments and velcro for negative moments – that’s because remembering the negative things is linked to our survival. So we really have to go out of our way to remember the wow moments throughout the day. For example, if the weather is amazing, spend 20 seconds, taking in five deep breaths to remember how good it feels to have such amazing weather. Don’t compromise on the non-negotiables when it comes to caring for your body – sleep, nourishment, and movement. It won’t matter how positive you are if you are under rested, undernourished, and not getting sufficient movement it will take a whole lot more energy and willpower to stay positive.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times?
For me, faith is central to how I navigate life and faith in inherently optimistic- faith that everything that is happening to me is for me. I do not deny the feelings that come with difficult experiences – the grief or sadness, overwhelm – but all the while there is something inside of me that holds me up and says to trust in the greater process, even when this moment or the path ahead is difficult. This perspective allows me to face life’s uncertainties with openness, knowing that every moment is part of a larger journey toward becoming more of me, more whole, and more true to myself. Faith doesn’t remove the discomfort, but it reminds me that the discomfort is temporary and transformative, like a refining fire. It’s a way of anchoring myself to the belief that when difficulties arise something more is being asked of me.
