Going incognito on the weekend? 13 hidden speakeasies to visit in Dubai

For the ultimate hidden experience, speakeasies are the best way to get to know any city.
What started during the ‘Prohibition Era’ has gone on to become a modern-day refined concept today, that has now gained popularity in different parts of the world.
After taking over basements, warehouses and other hidden spaces in the 1920s in New York, speakeasy bars became a hallmark for niche cocktails and delectable delights. What first needed a password to enter is now open to the public, however, it’s only if you know you know.
    The history of the concept
The speakeasy concept originated in the United States during Prohibition (1920–1933), a time when the sale, production, and transportation of alcoholic beverages were banned under the 18th Amendment. The term “speakeasy” refers to an illicit bar or nightclub where alcohol was sold and consumed in secret.
The name “speakeasy” itself likely comes from the practice of telling patrons to “speak easy” or quietly when ordering drinks to avoid attracting attention from law enforcement. These hidden speakeasies were often located behind unmarked doors, in basements, or behind fronts like soda shops or cafes, and required passwords or secret codes to enter.
After Prohibition ended in 1933 with the passage of the 21st Amendment, speakeasies disappeared as legal drinking establishments returned. However, in the 21st century, there has been a resurgence of speakeasy-style bars, now celebrated for their secretive entrances, vintage decor, and craft cocktails, evoking the glamour and mystique of the original era.
To champion this undying spirit, Dubai has opened a plethora of speakeasies that add a hint of mystery from the moment you enter.

Jay-Z accused of rape in a lawsuit alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has been accused of rape in a civil lawsuit filed on Sunday. The anonymous plaintiff, identified only as “Jane Doe,” alleges that the assault occurred in 2000, when she was 13 years old, at an MTV Video Music Awards after-party. The lawsuit also names Sean “Diddy” Combs as a defendant.
Everything to know about the lawsuit against Jay-Z

The federal lawsuit, originally filed in October in the Southern District of New York, was refiled on Sunday to include Carter. Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents the plaintiff, declined to comment on the matter.
    Stern response from Jay-Z

Jay-Z vehemently denied the allegations in a statement, calling them “idiotic” and accusing Buzbee of unprofessional behavior. He questioned the motivation behind filing a civil lawsuit instead of a criminal complaint, suggesting that genuine victims of such heinous crimes would pursue justice through the criminal justice system.
Jay-Z expressed heartbreak for his family, particularly his children, who may face questions about the allegations. He emphasized his innocence and his commitment to protecting children.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on whether the office is investigating the matter.
What is the Diddy connection to this?

This is not the first time Buzbee has filed lawsuits against Combs. In recent months, he has filed several lawsuits accusing Combs of assault and rape, all of which have withheld the names of the complainants. This is the first suit in which he has named another high-profile defendant alongside Combs.

Legal representatives for Combs have dismissed the lawsuits as “shameless publicity stunts” designed to extort money from celebrities. They maintain that Combs has never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone and expressed confidence in the judicial process to vindicate his innocence.

Combs himself is currently facing criminal charges in New York, including racketeering, sex trafficking, and other offenses. He is incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and is scheduled for trial in May 2025. Prosecutors have hinted at the possibility of additional charges in a superseding indictment.

Before the lawsuit was refiled, Buzbee had sent a letter to Carter’s legal team requesting mediation to resolve the matter. In response, Carter filed a lawsuit against the accuser’s attorneys.

The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff, then a 13-year-old girl, was invited to an after-party by a limousine driver working for Combs. Upon arriving at the party, she was required to sign a nondisclosure agreement and was given a drink that made her feel disoriented.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and is filed under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act.

Dubai, a city known for its ambitious skyline and luxurious lifestyle, is set to become a pedestrian-friendly paradise with the “Dubai Walk” project.
The “Dubai Walk” project, unveiled by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, envisions a network of 6,500 kilometers of modern walkways spanning across the emirate. This massive undertaking aims to connect iconic landmarks, historic districts, and vibrant neighborhoods, encouraging residents and visitors to explore the city on foot.

    A Network of Connectivity
The Dubai Walk initiative will not only enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal but also revolutionize urban mobility. By 2040, Dubai will boast 3,300 kilometers of newly constructed walkways and 2,300 kilometers of upgraded existing pathways. Additionally, 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses will be strategically placed to facilitate seamless movement throughout the city.
    A Glimpse into the Future
One of the most exciting components of the Dubai Walk project is “The Future Loop,” an elevated walkway that will encircle the iconic Museum of the Future. This 2-kilometer-long pathway will connect key landmarks such as the World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers, and DIFC, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. To complement this ambitious project, significant investments will be made in road infrastructure, including bridges and tunnels, to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times.

    A City for People
Beyond the physical infrastructure, Dubai Walk is committed to creating vibrant urban spaces that foster community and well-being. The project will introduce various urban models, including plazas, superblocks, and boulevards, to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
To further incentivize walking, a dedicated smart app will be launched. This innovative app will allow users to track their walking activity, explore recommended routes, and earn rewards for their efforts. By gamifying the walking experience, Dubai aims to encourage a healthier and more active lifestyle.
    A Sustainable Future
Dubai’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the Dubai Walk project. By prioritizing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, the city aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote a healthier environment. Additionally, the integration of green spaces and sustainable design principles will contribute to a more livable and resilient city.
As Dubai continues to evolve into a global metropolis, the Dubai Walk project represents a significant step towards creating a more human-centric and sustainable urban environment. By prioritizing pedestrians and investing in innovative infrastructure, Dubai is poised to become a leading example of urban planning and design.

10 ways to have a quiet Christmas (if you’re not feeling festive)

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

The holiday season is often associated with joyous gatherings and festive celebrations. However, spending a quiet Christmas by yourself can offer a unique opportunity for introspection, self-care, and productivity. Embracing a quiet Christmas alone can be a fulfilling and rejuvenating experience with the right mindset and a plan in place.

    Reflect and Set Intentions
Begin the day by reflecting on the past year and setting positive intentions for the upcoming one. Take some time to journal your thoughts, acknowledging achievements and areas for personal growth. Setting intentions can provide a sense of purpose and direction for the coming year.
    Enjoy a Relaxing Morning Routine
Start your day with a calming morning routine. Whether it’s a leisurely breakfast, a warm cup of tea, or a brief meditation session, focusing on self-care can set a positive tone for the day ahead.
    Creative Pursuits
Engage in creative activities that bring you joy. Whether it’s writing, drawing, painting, or crafting, spending time expressing yourself creatively can be therapeutic and fulfilling. Use this time to explore your creative side without any external pressures.
    Learn Something New
Take advantage of the quiet time to acquire a new skill or deepen your knowledge in a particular area of interest. Online courses, tutorials, or even a good book can be excellent companions during the holiday season.
    Connect Virtually
Even if you’re spending Christmas alone physically, connect with loved ones virtually. Schedule video calls with friends and family to share the holiday spirit, exchange well-wishes, and enjoy the warmth of connection, albeit from a distance.
Mindful Activities: Engage in mindfulness activities such as yoga, meditation, or a nature walk. These practices can help you stay present in the moment, reduce stress, and enhance your overall well-being.
    Cook a Special Meal
Prepare a special Christmas meal just for yourself. Experiment with new recipes or indulge in your favorite comfort foods. Cooking can be a therapeutic and rewarding activity, and enjoying a delicious meal can make the day feel festive.
    Plan for the Future
Take some time to set goals and plan for the future. This could include personal, professional, or even travel goals. Having a roadmap for the coming year can instill a sense of purpose and motivation.
    Movie Marathon or Reading Time

Create a cozy environment with your favorite movies, TV shows, or books. Whether it’s a classic holiday film or a novel you’ve been meaning to read, allow yourself to immerse in a world of storytelling.
    Gratitude Practice
End the day by reflecting on the things you are grateful for. A gratitude practice can shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life and foster a sense of contentment.
Spending Christmas alone can be a chance for meaningful self-discovery and personal growth. Embrace the tranquility, and use the time to nurture your mind, body, and soul. By incorporating these productive pointers, you can turn a quiet Christmas into a fulfilling and purposeful experience.
