In Pics: Danish brand Rotate’s flagship store plus, a cool-girl’s guide to Copenhagen

Founders of cool-girl fashion label Rotate, Jeanette Madsen and Thora Valdimars, have a lot to celebrate this summer.
Jeanette and Thora had a dreamy SS25 runway show during Copenhagen Fashion Week held at Royal’s Library Garden where the new collection showcases their free-spirited Scandinavian sensibilities merged with touches inspired from the 1920’s art deco era.

Plus, the opening of it’s first-ever flagship store located in the heart of the brand’s home city.
Designed by renowned interior architect Thibaut Allgayer, the space – adorned with touches of burgundy, wood, and chrome – offers Rotate’s community an impeccably chic and immersive environment where feminism meets blunt minimalism. These major milestones cement Rotate’s fashion credentials and puts Copenhagen on everyone’s radar.

That said, if you’re already planning a trip to the Danish capital, Jeanette and Thora share their go-to hangouts to include in your itinerary, from cool neighbourhoods to chic hot spots.
The thing you like most about living in Copenhagen:Jeanette & Thora (J&T): Copenhagen is a unique city because it feels energetic and cosmopolitan, but it is also small and approachable. It is a city that let’s you be yourself, it’s casual but also fun! And you can bike everywhere, which is a bonus.
Where to check-in for a stylish and authentic stay:J&T: We adore the Sanders Hotel in central Copenhagen. It is a small boutique hotel, that even though it is very popular is never too crowded. It’s the perfect escape within the city!

When someone visits the city, where do you take them first:J&T: There are so many places to visit in Copenhagen, and each borough of the city is different and full of interesting new things to do. But Copenhagen is really a city for foodies, it has some of the most incredible restaurants, so we would probably take a guest out for food first. The newly opened Bar Amore is a great spot to introduce someone to Copenhagen, it’s got a relaxed ambiance, great food and drinks and in a vibrant part of the city.

The ultimate place to be during weekends:J&T: We recommend spending time on the weekend around the Vesterbro neighbourhood. On a sleepy weekend, we would stop by Pauseriet or Ipsen & Co. for pastries and coffee, before heading out to see the variety of independent shops that Vesterbro has to offer. We suggest making a stop at Værnedamsvej, to see the eclectic design shop, Dora, the beautifully curated bookshop Thiemers Magasin, the quirky vintage store Tootsie and picking up seasonal flowers from Blomster Bjarne.

We love to spend our time sourcing unique vintage pieces, and one of the best vintage stores in the city has to be Jerome Vintage on Vesterbrogade. If you want to escape the city bustle, you can take a walk up to the picturesque Frederiksberg Have (gardens), where there is lovely lake and a viewing point of the entire city.
Your favourite lunch/dinner place plus, dishes you would recommend to try:Thora: Esmee is always a favourite for special occasions (or just a little treat!) – the lobster pasta and the green vegetable salad are amazing.

Jeanette: I love Locale 21, which is a relatively new restaurant that has a lovely street facing terrace so you can people-watch whilst you have dinner. They have a set menu where you get to try all the dishes, so you don’t have to pick just one!

If vegan, a favourite vegan eatery in Copenhagen plus, dishes you need to order:J&T: Neither of us are vegan but there are definitely some great options in the city, most restaurants have a huge range of dishes that allow for vegan or vegetarian needs – 42Raw is a good option for quick lunch choices, whilst Baka D’Busk is a fully vegetarian option that is a lot of fun for dinner!
What’s your go-to place for coffee/tea/matcha:Jeanette: I love the coffee at Beau Marche Cafe og Vins – it always comes served in a nice cup and it’s not too strong.
Thora: I prefer to go to my local spot, Københavns Bageri, in Carsberg Byen.
A once-in-a-lifetime experience to try:J&T: Copenhagen is a very special city, there are many experiences you can have here that are not available in other cities – especially in the summer. Copenhagen summer days are long, the sun rises early and sets late into the night, which is a beautiful thing to witness. The city is also located on the sea, which means that you can swim in the water throughout the city. And just being able to cycle anywhere and everywhere in a major city is pretty amazing!
A go-to wellness spot:Thora: Amazing Space is a heavenly escape in the city, located in the stately D’Angleterre hotel, it is the perfect spot for all wellness needs.
Jeanette: I recommend One Thirty Labs, their treatments are one of a kind, you can go there for Cryo, Compression Therapy, MMS, Infrared Sauna – the list goes on!
A must-see for culture mavens:Thora: I think Copenhagen Contemporary is a must visit for people looking for culture. There is a modern art gallery in a giant warehouse located at Refshaleøen. They always have unique and exciting exhibitions.

Jeanette: I recommend taking a trip outside of the city to visit Louisiana Museum, which is in Humlebæk (about 30 minutes out of Copenhagen on the train). It is a beautiful modern art gallery on the coast, and the views from the gallery are just as good as the art itself!

Copenhagen’s best-kept secret that only locals know (and love!):J&T: Copenhagen has some of the best flea-markets we know! Throughout the summer, each weekend there are a huge number of markets throughout the city, where locals can buy and sell incredible secondhand clothing, interior design and furniture. It might not be very well known with tourists, but it is a staple for all Copenhageners!
A favourite place to see style on the street:J&T: You can go pretty much anywhere in Copenhagen and people will be very well dressed! Each of the central Copenhagen boroughs has a different style though, Nørrebro style tends to be a little bit more casual and vintage-inspired, whilst Østerbro is more preppy and Copenhagen K is a melting pot of everything!
The essentials you need to take with you:J&T: Copenhagen summer weather is known for being very unpredictable, so it’s essential to be prepared – always carry both an umbrella and SPF!
Copenhagen style tends to be about mixing casual and dressy pieces, so we recommend bringing the fun pieces from your wardrobe that you have always wanted to wear. And a true Copenhagen summer look is not complete without a pair of Havaianas!

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai are avid food lovers. They are always seen supporting the restaurants scene in the UAE.
While the Royal Family may well have kitchens filled with more chefs than a Michelin-starred restaurant, eating out can offer – just as it can for most of us – a thrilling change from the routine.
From neighbourhood bistros to fine-dining havens in Dubai by Chef Izu, such as Alaya. The options for dining are endless and now some are even approved by the Royals.
With a plethora of restaurants available in Dubai, it can be hard to choose where to go, however, the Royals know exactly where to visit. If you’re looking for somewhere to dine at then, these restaurants are a must-visit.
Over the years, Sheikh Mohammed has visited a myriad of restaurants such as CÉ LA VI, Shanghai ME, Gaia, Zuma and more.

Various Royals from the family have often been spotted dining at a host of the emirate’s best eateries. It proves they truly have their finger on the pulse of Dubai’s booming gastronomic scene. Year after year, Sheikh Mohammed, has consistently shown support for the local F&B industry in the UAE.
Both Sheikh Mohammed and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Makhtoum are all about supporting the hospitality industry.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif brings home gold despite scrutiny at the Olympics

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif: A golden triumph amidst a storm of controversy.

Imane Khelif, a determined Algerian boxer, has etched her name in history by clinching the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Her victory, however, is far from a straightforward tale of athletic prowess. Khelif’s journey to the podium has been a tumultuous one, marked by unprecedented levels of scrutiny and online abuse stemming from unfounded questions about her gender.

Having conquered the ring with a decisive 5-0 victory over China’s Yang Liu in the women’s welterweight final, Khelif’s triumph was celebrated by a jubilant Algerian crowd at the iconic Roland Garros stadium. Yet, while her supporters waved flags and chanted her name, the boxer faced a barrage of attacks from a global platform, including high-profile individuals who publicly questioned her eligibility to compete in the women’s category.

Khelif’s experience has thrust her into the spotlight as a symbol of the evolving discourse on gender identity and the complex challenges faced by athletes navigating the intersection of sports and societal norms. As the world grapples with shifting attitudes towards gender, her story serves as a stark reminder of the prejudices that persist, even in the face of extraordinary achievement.

Imane Khelif, a dedicated athlete who has competed as a woman throughout her career, was born female, is registered as female, and holds a female passport. Yet, her legitimacy to compete was challenged, primarily due to lingering biases and misconceptions. These allegations were refuted by the IOC, which reaffirmed her status as a female athlete. IOC spokesman Mark Adams stated unequivocally that Imane “was born female, is registered as female, has lived her life as female, boxes as female, and has a female passport,” stressing that the issue is not related to transgenderism.

Despite the clarity of her eligibility, public figures and critics, including British author JK Rowling and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have attacked Khelif’s right to compete. Rowling’s comments on social media, labeling Khelif as male, and Meloni’s assertion that female athletes with male chromosomes should not compete in women’s sports, have only fueled the controversy and intensified the unfair treatment of Khelif.
The criticism directed at Khelif is not just a personal attack but also a reflection of broader societal prejudices and misinformation about gender identity. The Algerian Olympic Committee and Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports, Abdel Rahman Hamad, have rightfully condemned these attacks, emphasizing the need to support athletes like Khelif against baseless and malicious accusations.

Adding to the injustice, Khelif’s recent victory in the 66kg weight class was overshadowed by the controversy. Her Italian opponent, Angela Carini, withdrew from their match after a strong punch, leading to Khelif’s advancement. Yet, instead of celebrating her achievement, the focus shifted to unfounded allegations. Even after Khelif’s unanimous victory over Hungarian Anna Luca Hamori, ensuring her an Olympic medal, the debate over her gender persisted.
The situation was exacerbated by past incidents, such as Khelif’s disqualification from the 2023 world championships due to an unspecified gender eligibility test. This past scrutiny has only compounded the current controversy, despite the IOC’s clear stance and support for Khelif’s participation.
The IOC President, Thomas Bach, defended the inclusion of Khelif and fellow boxer Lin Yu-ting, criticizing the backlash as “hate speech.” Bach emphasized that both athletes were born as women, raised as women, and have competed as women, underscoring the baselessness of the criticism they faced.

The unnecessary controversy surrounding Imane Khelif’s participation in the Paris Olympics highlights the urgent need for better education and understanding of gender issues in sports. Khelif’s case should serve as a reminder of the importance of fair treatment and the dangers of allowing prejudice to overshadow athletic achievements. It is imperative that future discussions and decisions on gender eligibility in sports be guided by facts and fairness, ensuring that no athlete has to endure such unjust scrutiny again.

Mercury in retrograde: Here’s how you can survive the chaos

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Mercury is at it again. That pesky little planet that’s supposed to be the messenger of the gods is currently engaged in a cosmic game of reverse limbo, and we’re all collateral damage. It’s like the universe decided to hit the rewind button on communication, technology, and our sanity.

For the uninitiated, Mercury retrograde is when this tiny, mischievous planet appears to be moving backward in its orbit. Astrologers blame it for everything from lost luggage to unexpected ex-lovers. Scientists, on the other hand, simply shrug and say it’s an optical illusion. But who needs science when we have drama?
So, what does this celestial shenanigans mean for us mere mortals? Well, expect the unexpected. Your phone might spontaneously combust, your carefully crafted email might end up in the wrong inbox (or worse, the sent folder), and your GPS might lead you on a wild goose chase. It’s like living in a real-life episode of “Black Mirror,” but with fewer robots and more misplaced keys.

But fear not, intrepid earthlings! There are ways to survive this cosmic chaos. First and foremost, gird your loins. Or, if you prefer a more modern approach, wear your big-girl (or big-boy) pants. This is not the time to be delicate. You’ll need a thick skin, a sharper-than-usual wit, and a sense of humor that could rival a stand-up comedian.

Next, invest in a good old-fashioned notebook. Remember those things? They don’t crash, they don’t have autocorrect, and they don’t leak your deepest secrets to the world. Also, consider unplugging. Yes, it’s scary, but it might just save your sanity.
Finally, embrace the chaos. Mercury retrograde is like a cosmic prankster playing tricks on us. Instead of getting angry, try to laugh it off. After all, what else can you do? And who knows, maybe this is the universe’s way of forcing us to slow down, disconnect, and appreciate the little things in life.

So, buckle up, dear reader. The next few weeks might be a bumpy ride, but remember, this too shall pass. And when it does, we can all pat ourselves on the back for surviving another Mercury retrograde.
