      Sevil Dolmacı, founder of Sevil Dolmacı Gallery Dubai, discusses honing a vision and finding a distinct voice in the emerging art markets, about her evolving taste, and the importance of trusting your instinct to support creative young talents.
      What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine?
      I wake up early in the morning. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I do Pilates at 9am. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I take a walk along Bebek’s waterfront. Around midday, I stop by the office for my meetings.
      What are the key pillars of Sevil Dolmacı Gallery that set it apart from the rest?
      Sevil Dolmacı Gallery stands out as the first gallery in the Middle East to focus on American contemporary art alongside Turkish art. What also makes us unique is our dedicated Digital Section, where we actively support various art projects and create opportunities for young talents, helping them find their place in the art world.

      How have your previous experiences as lecturer and consultant informed you in your current role?
      Having a strong background in art history has been a key advantage in managing the gallery, setting me apart in the field. It has helped us gain momentum quickly and build a solid network of references in the industry. Combining deep knowledge with market dynamics has been a powerful asset, making international artists feel more confident and eager to collaborate with us – ultimately contributing to the gallery’s rapid growth.
      Sevil Dolmacı Dubai is your first international outpost. Why is the Middle East market important?
      The fact that it is a new and emerging market with a strong interest in art motivated us. The region’s investments in art and the establishment of museums were particularly important factors for us. Sevil Dolmacı Dubai currently showcases two design pieces Kengo Kuma and Daniel Weil.

      How do you discover creatives you’d like to work with?
      Kengo Kuma is the architect behind the OMM Museum in Türkiye. His artistic approach closely aligns with ours, which was the primary motivation for our collaboration. I am particularly drawn to abstract and minimal forms. At the same time, I enjoy incorporating colourful, popular forms to create a striking contrast. This is a strategy I apply in both paintings and design pieces.
      What are some of the key principles that lead you in supporting new artists and exhibitions?
      I value artists who have graduated from reputable art schools. Their perspective on art and their career planning are also significant factors. If an exhibition’s concept aligns with our vision, I contribute by providing our gallery space. In Türkiye, I am among the supporters of both the Venice Biennale and the Istanbul Biennale, as they are two of the most important international events showcasing Türkiye’s position in the global art scene.

      What’s been key for you in building that authentic community around these exhibitions and projects you’ve worked on?
      I deeply love and believe in art. Art collectors are influenced by my dedication and investments in the field, and they appreciate gaining knowledge about it.
      As a creative, what role does the commercial aspect play for you?
      One of the most crucial elements shaping art history is the ability to successfully manage the art business. I operate within a structured and sustainable model to ensure longevity and success.
      What’s on the horizon for you and your brand?
      We will be participating in Art Dubai with our Digital Section. At our Istanbul gallery, we are preparing for a group exhibition curated by Robert Fleck, featuring some of the world’s most prominent artists. It’s a truly exciting project for us.
      This is The Design Issue – which design or artist has left an impression on you?
      The collaboration between Alessandro Mendini and Peter Halley was a remarkable exhibition project that brought together two artists and designers I greatly admire.

      Baoli

      One of the biggest new culinary hits at J1 Beach, Baoli brings the flavours of the Far East and Mediterranean together over a crowd-pleasing menu served up in a sophisticated seaside setting. And over the weekend, this lively spot saw a VIP visit from Sheikh Mohammed, who took time to check out several of the new J1 venues. In an Instagram video of Sheikh Mohammed exiting the venue, they posted that they were “deeply honoured” to welcome the Ruler of Dubai.
      Sirene by Gaia

      A seaside iteration of the stalwart homegrown Greek restaurant in DIFC, Sirene is the world’s largest luxury beach club. Having opened at the end of last year, it’s quickly become one of the hottest spots in the city. Over the weekend, the venue got a visit from Sheikh Mohammed, who appeared to be on a tour of J1 Beach. The venue posted that it was a ‘pleasure’ to host the Dubai Ruler.
      Gerbou

      Mere days after opening, earlier this year, Sheikh Mohammed paid a visit to Gerbou. Housed in an ornate Jumeirah villa that dates back to 1987, Gerbou comes from the team behind top-tier concepts including One Michelin Star 11 Woodfire and refined French eatery RSVP. Through a collaboration with Tashkeel and its founder and director HH Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum, the two innovative brands have created Gerbou to redefine Emirati dining.
      Gigi Rigolatto 

      Soon after Gigi Rigolatto opened its doors at J1 Beach last year, Sheikh Mohammed paid the venue a visit. From its stunning beachfront location to its exquisite cuisine, every detail is meticulously curated to offer guests an unforgettable experience. The club boasts a state-of-the-art infinity pool, plush sunbeds, and private cabanas, providing the perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. The restaurant, a culinary masterpiece, serves up a delectable array of Italian dishes, from classic pasta to fresh seafood.       It’s one of the Dubai social calendar’s most glittering social events, and this Saturday April 5, the Dubai World Cup returns.
      Taking place at Meydan racecourse, the final race day of the season – might be the main event, but this equine extravaganza is as much about fashion as it is sports. One of the world’s richest horse races, across the nine-race card there’s a total of USD 30.5 million in prize money, plus an array of culinary and hospitality options and a dazzling closing ceremony that typically includes fireworks, drones and sensational live music.
      This year is set to be no exception, so don your best outfits and get ready for an exhilarating day of fashion, sport and high-octane glamour.
      When is the Dubai World Cup?
      The Dubai World Cup 2025 will take place on Saturday April 5. Doors open from midday, with the first race taking place at 4.35pm and the last race lining up at 9.30pm. After the final race concludes, the show-stopping closing ceremony begins.
      What are the ticket options?

      The entry level tickets, priced at AED350, get you access to all the action at Apron Views. Here, you’ll find the vibrant social village, with a variety of food and beverage options. Apron Views is also home to the renowned Style Stakes competition, with incredible prizes for the best dressed. Get your tickets here.
      If you’re looking for hospitality packages, perhaps the best value experience comes in the two-floor Sky Bubble, where the Grand Gallop Mega Brunch by Candypants offers a brunch package from 2.30pm to 6.30pm, with beverages available right through until 11.30pm. Seating is allocated on sharing tables of 10, and as well as an afternoon of hospitality, you can expect front row views to the sporting action plus live entertainment. Tickets start from AED 850.
      While VIP hospitality packages are now sold out, regular hospitality packages are still available at The Gallery, located on Level 1 with views of the finish line; Trackside, also on level 1 but opposite the parade ring; and The Terrace, which features an outdoor seating area extending from the centre of the grandstand right to the end. Packages start from AED1,200.

      The fashion stakes at Dubai World Cup are high – and a certain level of glamour is always expected, so this is an occasion to go all out. In terms of etiquette, a fascinator or hat is requested, and longer dresses are preferred.
