How I got my job as… co-founder of Dubai’s first beach house for private members

This week we speak to Tessa Horovitz, Co-Founder of With Love Hospitality and Chouchou, the city’s first beach house for private members on the white sands of J1 Beach, La Mer Dubai.
Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible wellness, fashion and beauty entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.
Opening doors in October 2024, this classic two-story Parisian beach house captures the sun-kissed ease of the Riviera while being on the doorstep of the city. It provides access to a distinctive lifestyle to relax, socialise, and build valuable connections in the heart of the city. Additionally, there’s an access to exclusive amenities, members’ experiences are elevated through curated intimate gatherings across wellness, food, culture and music.
With exclusive amenities onboard, members can experience intimate gatherings and step back into a treasured holiday moment. The Chouchou crowd is made up of unique souls – families, friends and solo explorers alike who have one thing in common – they long to carve out moments of serenity and joie de vivre among the hustle.
To delve into her journey as an entrepreneur, Emirates Woman sat down with Horovitz to see how it all began.
What was your favourite subject at school?
I was fortunate to attend an international school with a wide array of subjects to choose from, but two that truly captivated me were visual arts and acting. My love for art began early, thanks to my parents who enrolled me in extra art classes when I was just seven years old. Those formative experiences sparked my creative journey and shaped my passion for design and expression.

    What was your first job?
While I did several internships in both NGOs and fashion, my true first job was as a stylist for a French TV show. I was responsible for assisting with dressing celebrities and sourcing props for the show. A significant part of the role involved selecting clothes from showrooms and managing brand partnerships. It was an exciting and dynamic experience that gave me a deeper understanding of fashion, branding, and the art of styling under pressure.
    What brought you to Dubai?
Initially, it was my family that brought me to Dubai—my brother, sister, and mother moved here. As I rediscovered the city, I was amazed by how much it had evolved since my first visit in 2010. Dubai’s dynamic energy and rapid growth make it such a unique place. When my siblings and I were looking to launch our new hospitality group, Dubai felt like the perfect choice—a city with an exciting vision for the future, which aligned perfectly with our goals. This led us to create With Love Hospitality, with our first project together in this exciting city.
What inspired you to enter the hospitality and launch Chouchou?
My journey into hospitality feels like it was written in the stars. My family has been deeply involved in the hospitality world since 1995, and I was fortunate enough to help build and lead the group they created. Before founding With Love Hospitality, I worked as the Chief Creative Officer in the industry, designing and developing projects that truly resonated with me. Launching Chouchou has been a deeply personal experience—a true homecoming for me. It’s the culmination of years of experience and creativity, and the dream of building something with my family of exceptionally talented professionals. The journey to bring Chouchou to life was filled with passion, collaboration, and a shared vision of creating a unique and luxurious space that feels welcoming and vibrant. Chouchou is a reflection of everything I love about design, community, and the hospitality world.
    Talk us through the concept?
For us, Chouchou is so much more than just a restaurant or beach club—it’s a private members’ club where we’ve created an exclusive, thoughtfully connected community in the heart of Dubai. We wanted to capture the sun-soaked spirit of the French Riviera, blending it with the vibrant energy of this city. At the core of Chouchou is our vision to offer members a refined yet relaxed space where they can unwind, connect, and enjoy life with others who share an appreciation for both understated elegance and a laid-back, stylish lifestyle.
What truly sets Chouchou apart is our focus on personalized service. We wanted to create a place where every member feels genuinely seen and valued. Our team goes above and beyond to ensure that each visit is tailored to individual preferences—from remembering your favorite drink to curating bespoke experiences that make every moment special.
Whether you’re attending one of our private events, enjoying a sunset cocktail, or gathering with loved ones, it’s important to us that every interaction feels personal, warm, and memorable. We want Chouchou to be a retreat from the city’s fast pace—a place that offers not only an intimate and unique experience but also a genuine sense of belonging.
What are the key elements of your role?
As the creative force behind the ideas, my role revolves around shaping the vision for our projects and bringing them to life. I feel privileged to take the pen and ensure that every aspect of the project—from design and storytelling to the overall atmosphere—aligns with the vision we set out to achieve. I love the process of starting with a blank canvas and transforming initial ideas into something tangible, watching the project evolve and come to life piece by piece.
A significant part of my role involves crafting the brand’s visual identity and setting the aesthetics standards. The brand’s design language—from logos and typography to color palettes and materials—needs to be cohesive and reflective of the project’s essence. I ensure that all visual elements, whether in the physical space or across brand touchpoints, are aligned with the brand’s personality and values.
Once the space is fully realised, I hand it over to the operational team, ready for them to bring it to life with their own expertise. I ensure that the space is not only aesthetically perfect but also functional, so the team can step in and provide an unforgettable guest experience from day one. It’s incredibly rewarding to see an idea transform from concept to completion and then hand over a space that is ready to be lived in, enjoyed, and experienced, all while staying true to the brand’s visual identity and aesthetics.

Talk us through your daily routine.
I start the day early, usually with a coffee, and take some quiet time to gather my thoughts. Mornings are also a great moment for catching up with my family—we talk about their evening or weekend, which gives me a sense of grounding before I dive into the day. This time is precious, and it helps me start my day on a positive note. The mornings are my most creative time, so I use them to focus on design work, whether that’s sketching new concepts or refining details on current projects.
By midday, my schedule fills up with meetings—whether it’s with my team, suppliers, or technical partners. Collaboration is essential, so I like to stay closely involved with the various moving parts of a project, ensuring that everything is progressing smoothly. I try to spend as much time on-site as possible, overseeing the development to make sure that the vision is being executed to plan.
Afternoons are often dedicated to operational tasks or brainstorming with my siblings. Their input is crucial to everything we do, so these sessions are invaluable to shaping the creative direction of our projects.
In the evenings, I try to leave space for inspiration, whether it’s visiting a gallery, enjoying dinner with my husband or going out for a nice cocktail. Keeping a balance between my creative and operational responsibilities while nurturing those personal connections is what fuels me every day.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
The most important piece of advice I can give is to trust the process and, most importantly, trust yourself. Creativity requires patience and resilience—there will always be challenges, but those moments can spark new ideas if you stay open to them. Trust that your vision is worth pursuing, even when things feel uncertain. Surround yourself with a team that shares your passion and values. Collaboration is key to bringing ideas to life, and having people around you who inspire and challenge you is invaluable. Don’t be afraid to start with a blank canvas, even if it feels daunting. The journey from concept to creation is incredibly rewarding, and it’s important to believe in your ability to make it happen.

Tell us more about the dishes served and overarching experience?
At the heart of our culinary offering is our talented Executive Chef, Valentin Bernigaud, a Parisian with a deep-rooted passion for French cuisine. Valentin’s cooking philosophy is steeped in tradition, but he brings a modern approach, aiming to create a dining experience that celebrates the joy of eating en famille. Our menu celebrates the flavors of France—fresh seafood, vibrant salads, and artisanal cocktails—all crafted with Valentin’s expertise. Every dish is inspired by beloved French summer memories creating a true sense of the Riviera here in Dubai.
Desserts are also an integral part of the experience at Chouchou. Our in-house bakery offers freshly baked treasures inspired by the finest Parisian patisseries, including a selection of sweet and savory soufflés, Mille-Feuille, and other delights that capture the essence of French pastry.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever received came from my father and mentor, Jacques Horovitz: “The secret to staying ahead lies in anticipation, not in reaction.” This mindset has profoundly shaped how I approach both my personal and professional life.
    And what is the worst?
The worst piece of advice I’ve ever received was, “Don’t take risks outside your expertise—stay within your comfort zone.” Venturing outside of my creative area has been one of the most valuable learning experiences. True innovation often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing the unfamiliar.
What’s the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?
The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome was bringing Chouchou to life without compromising on the level of quality I envisioned. Creating something entirely new from scratch—building a concept, a brand, and a space that didn’t exist before—was both exciting and demanding. Ensuring that every detail aligned with the high standards I had in mind, from design to execution, was a constant balancing act. There were many moving parts, and it required persistence to ensure the final result reflected the vision I had from the beginning.
What’s your future for the brand?
The future for Chouchou is limitless. We see Chouchou becoming more than just a members destination—it’s a movement, a lifestyle that people from around the world can embrace. Our vision is to expand the Chouchou experience globally, bringing the essence of the French Riviera to iconic locations, each tailored to reflect the beauty, culture, and spirit of its surroundings. We’re also looking to expand Chouchou’s offerings, from unique experiences to collaborations that inspire and excite our members. Our future is about pushing boundaries, reimagining luxury, and creating experiences that are as dynamic and evolving as the people we serve. The possibilities are endless, and we’re just getting started.

How I got my job as… Artist Director at Ethara

This week, Emirates Man speaks to Ethara’s Artist Director, Jason Johnson.
Welcome to the Emirates Man weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businessmen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.
As the Artist and Content Director in Abu Dhabi, Jason orchestrates unforgettable live entertainment experiences by curating diverse lineups of international and local artists. With over 15 years of experience in the industry, Jason brings a wealth of expertise to his role, ensuring the seamless execution of each event through meticulously navigating contract negotiations and promoting teamwork across departments.
Jason has built a diverse portfolio during his seven years at Ethara, spotlighting acts from Dua Lipa to Eminem, The Weeknd, Foo Fighters, and Guns N’ Roses, alongside stars like Pink, Post Malone, Andrea Bocelli, and comedians Dave Chappelle and Russell Peters. Jason also plays a crucial role in the Yasalam F1 After-Race concerts, blending top international artists with up-and-coming talents to create a vibrant atmosphere at the events.
An influential player in the industry, Jason extends his influence beyond concerts to foster the local music scene, evidenced by the Regional Artist Spotlight programme. This initiative has elevated the profiles of over 25 local and regional acts through strategic partnerships.
Emirates Man spoke to Jason to see how it all began. Here, Jason shares his career journey and insider insights that comes with the job of putting together a show like no other.

What was your favourite subject at school?
I enjoyed a few of them but Entrepreneurial Studies stands out the most to me. There was a programme back home in Canada for entrepreneurial studies in high school and I opted for it, not thinking much, and it left a much bigger impact on my life because of the lessons I’ve learned from it. It taught me a lot of skills that I find myself using to this day in my role that constantly has me negotiating with artist management, resolving issues, and strategically allocating our resources at Ethara.
    What was your first job?
I worked as a cashier at a fast-food chain in Toronto. I believe it gave me a good understanding of working with a large number of people. One of the main aspects of my job was conversing with people, and working in the service industry definitely helped me build a strong foundation for dealing with different personalities. Since then, I’ve worked in the live entertainment industry for over 15 years, from owning an entertainment agency to now being the Artist Director at Ethara – it’s been a long journey to get where I am.
What eventually brought you to the Abu Dhabi?
I initially came here to visit a friend who had just relocated to the country. So when I came, checked it out, and thought, “I’m gonna live here.” And that was it. It was an immediate decision, but it took me six years to make it happen. During those six years, I would come back every year. The growth was exponential in the city and you could feel the energy throughout. And it felt like no idea was too big.
What inspired you to enter the entertainment space?
I believe I was always in the entertainment space. I think it comes from my Jamaican culture. Our culture is all about bringing families together on the weekends and organising parties and events. So it felt like a natural extension of things that I did with my family to my friends and then expanded it to everyone else.
What are the key elements of your role as Artist Director at Ethara?
The exciting part about my job at Ethara is that I wear many hats. It’s always interesting and challenging. Sometimes I act as a lawyer finalising contracts and then strategising e with the marketing team; no two days are ever the same and that’s what I love.
In a nutshell, my main focus areas are artist procurement, IP development, and event programming. I can go from negotiating commercial points and also working with a team to delivering the events. Research and development is a big part of what we do. Trends have shifted, especially around F1 and subsequently with the Yasalam After-Race Concerts. The audience has gotten younger and more diverse We look at diversifying the lineup over the week. We try to adapt by looking at the trends, making sure that we are ahead of it. Our team works year-round to ensure we deliver the best event we can to support one of the biggest sporting events in the Middle East.

    Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023
Talk us through your daily routine.
I usually wake up around 7:00 AM every day and start my day with a matcha. I play some piano right after since I’m currently learning it. It helps me clear my mind and sets me up to start on the right note.
I’ll start by checking my emails and liaising with artist agencies to plan any potential performances in the UAE. I’ll move on to researching artist touring data if we’re currently actively in a cycle of procuring artists and announcing artists. Then it’s my responsibility to coordinate with all of our other departments to ensure that whatever is contractually agreed upon is acceptable for everyone involved. After that, I facilitate the approvals for the announcement and serve as a point of contact to verify everything adheres to our contractual terms.
In the background, a lot is happening, and we simultaneously plan for the coming years and look at what commercial shows might make sense for this year and years to come. Thankfully, we have such a great team that is well-oiled that has done this year after year. And I don’t think any of us individually could say it’s because of us. It really is a hive mind and a collective movement, especially when we are in sync leading up to an event.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
What I always tell people is that the fastest and easiest way to achieve success is to be consistent. It’s the only way to do or become anything you want. If you get up tomorrow, and you’re like, “I’m going to take 1 step towards this thing”, you might miss a day. But what is important, is that the next day, you come back. You need to be determined to take another step that eventually compounds over time. These small steps move you yards. You may not see your progress right now, but the only thing that actually genuinely works is to be consistent. And the sooner you become more consistent, the easier it is for everything else to happen and fall into place.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received?
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve actually ever gotten was, “If you think the price of winning is too high, wait until you get the bill for regret.” And it speaks volumes to me because if you take a shot at what you want, you will always be content that you tried even if it didn’t work out. But to think, “What could have happened if I tried?” is a mindset you should try to stray away from. And I apply this advice daily in my professional and personal life.
Tell us what guests can expect at the upcoming Yasalam After-Race Concerts?
This year we have an incredible lineup of artists delivering an unparalleled 4 nights of entertainment at Etihad Park, headlining the Yasalam After-Race Concerts. Featuring world-class artists, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix’s 16th edition will feature multi-platinum artist Teddy Swims and electronic music royalty Peggy Gou on the first night of the event. Friday and Saturday will feature Grammy award-winning artists and American icons Maroon 5 and Eminem, respectively. Wrapping up a four-day thriller is British rock legends Muse, closing the region’s biggest sporting and entertainment event on a high. You don’t want to miss these performances.

    Teddy Swims and Peggy Gou
What has been the biggest challenge in your role at Ethara?
When it comes to the Yasalam After-Race Concerts, we have to constantly think outside the box. We had to look at what made the most sense for the lineup. In recent years, we have definitely wanted to have an even balance of star power across the four days of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which is something that we have been mindful of this year.
But that decision alone involves 10,000 things that you have to consider. There are things like budgets, artist availability, artist calibre, touring dates, and all these elements that we look at solely for artist selection. It requires a lot of effort, and it took a lot to finalise the lineup this year. We are incredibly excited for our audience to finally see Muse, Maroon 5, Eminem, and our latest additions—Teddy Swims and Peggy Gou perform at Etihad Park.
What are your goals for the future?
My hope for Ethara is that we continue being what we currently are: the premier, one-stop destination for entertainment. Whether it’s small or large-scale productions of any kind, I want us to become a key player in the regional market, able to rival international businesses. I hope the team keeps refining and creating experiences that turn into core memories for people—moments they carry with them for life.

If there’s one sport that has grown in popularity over the years, it’s Padel Tennis with numerous courts around Dubai.
While there’s no denying that the sport is gaining momentum in the region, a few people what the game is actually about. Overall, the game is played with solid racquets and a depressurized tennis ball.
Now, there are several clubs and venues in Dubai that offer padel tennis facilities for players to enjoy. These clubs typically provide well-maintained courts, equipment rental, and coaching services.

The sport was first invented in 1969 by Enrique Corcuera, a Mexican businessman, at his home in Acapulco, Mexico. As he didn’t have enough space for a full-sized tennis court, so he improvised by creating a smaller court with walls around it. He initially called it “Paddle Corcuera.” The game’s walls were used for rebounds, adding a squash-like element to the sport.
Eventually, the sport gained global recognition. During the 1990s, padel began to spread to other countries, including France, Italy, and Portugal, while its popularity surged in Spain, which today is the global hub of the sport. The Padel Pro Tour (PPT) was established in Spain in 2005, attracting international attention, with some of the best players coming from Spain and Argentina.
Today, padel is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide, with millions of players globally. It’s popular because it’s easier to play than tennis (since the court is smaller and the technique less demanding) and is highly social, usually played in doubles format. The sport’s rise is especially prominent in countries like Sweden and the UAE, and it has become a popular recreational activity in many urban areas worldwide.
The sport continues to evolve, with an ever-expanding global community of players, including many high-profile athletes and celebrities joining in on the action. so, if you’re thinking of giving this new buzzword in the sporting community a shot, we’re here to help.
