Watch: Incredible time lapse shows Kuwait become engulfed in huge dust storm

    Lifestyle

    by Team Emirates Woman

On Monday, all flights were grounded in Kuwait due to a huge dust storm which engulfed the country.
Kuwait City was coated in a thick orange haze which, according to Kuwait’s State News Agency KUNA, the storm swept across the country and saw winds exceed 60 kilometres per hour and also led visibility to decrease to less than 500 metres in some parts.
One individual managed to capture an incredible time-lapse of the entire storm engulfing an area of the country.

In the footage, which has been making the rounds on social media, a huge dust cloud is seen in the background and slowly as the timelapse continues it edges closer to the city.
During the 30 second clip, the storm charges towards the coastal area of Kuwait and completely engulfs the skyline, with only an orange hue to be seen on camera.
While all commercial flights were grounded on Monday, they were rescheduled after the storm had passed.
The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology has warned the storm could hit western parts of the country.

Meet the first Emirati woman to climb Mount Everest

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

Emirati women are continuing to break the mould and pave the way for future generations.
Nayla Nasir from the UAE is a perfect example of this having recently become the first Emirati woman to climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain.
The Emirati-Uruguayan climber reached the astonishing height of 8,848.8 metres on May 14, 2022, officially making history in the UAE.
After one week of harrowing human endurance, the Emirati mountaineer made it to the summit of the world’s tallest mountain.
Upon reaching she hoisted the UAE’s flag and made the country proud, climbing her way into the history books.

Conducted by Nepalese mountaineer, Chhang Dawa Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, the expedition was completed sooner than expected due to the favourable weather conditions, according to the Seven Summit Treks Instagram.
It’s not the first mountain Nasir has summited. She has previously climbed Turkey’s Mount Ararat at 5,140 metres and made it to the Summit of Cameroon at 4,090 meters high, hoisting the UAE’s flags on different summits.
Besides mountaineering, Nasir is a multi-talented athlete being a scuba divemaster, free diver and horse rider.

Nasir summited Mount Everest two days before Dubai-based athlete and former Emirates Woman cover star Manal Rostom became the first Egyptian woman to reach the top of the world’s tallest mountain. She marked the history-making moment on Instagram with a video of her “on top of the world”, fulfilling a long-time ambition of hers.
Kudos to these inspiring women who are on a mission to empower women through the world of mountaineering.

Real Housewives of Dubai teaser sparks criticism in the UAE

    Lifestyle

    by Team Emirates Woman

The Real Housewives of Dubai trailer has sparked controversy in the region.
Following the release of the full-length trailer last week, some have spoken out condemning the show, highlighting that it does not accurately represent the emirate of Dubai.
Leading the conversation surrounding the criticism of The Real Housewives of Dubai is Emirati commentator Majid Alamry.
Last week he took to Instagram to share a video with his 86.6k followers denouncing the show in its entirety saying that it “does not represent Dubai”.
“The housewives of my country are our mothers, our sisters, our daughters,” he said in his video. “They are the backbone in helping give our children the proper upbringing.”

However, he described the ‘housewives’ in the show as “women using the nastiest language you can ever think of and they’re presenting themselves as gold diggers”.
Alamry went on to explain that while the UAE is “a tolerant country… that does not mean that other can walk all over our morals and values”.
Since posting the video, Alamry has garnered over 260,000 views, over 10,000 likes and over 1,000 comments, with many sharing a similar sentiment to him.
Popular fashion content creator Fatma Husam commented saying, “Thank you for speaking our thoughts.”
Meanwhile, others commented saying Alamry’s words were “well said” and they “fully agree” with his statements.
The first international instalment of the Real Housewives franchise was announced back in November and is set to premiere on June 1, 2022 on Bravo TV.
The reality show is set to follow the lives of Dubai residents Caroline Stanbury, Caroline Brooks, Dr. Sara Al Madani, Nina Ali, Chanel Ayan and Lesa Milan.

Saudi Arabia makes history as first all-female flight crew takes to the skies

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

Saudi Arabia has achieved yet another milestone for women’s empowerment in the country.
Flyadeal, an airline run by the Kingdom’s national carrier Saudia, made history as a flight took off with an all-female cabin crew for the first time ever from Riyadh to Jeddah on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
Per the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GCAA), the announcement was confirmed with praise for the expansion of women’s roles in the aviation sector over the last few years.
On the latest A320 aircraft majority of the seven-member crew were Saudi women including the first officer. However, the captain was a foreign woman, per Flyadeal spokesperson Emad Iskandarani.

For the first time in Saudi aviation history!🇸🇦
#flyadeal operated the first flight with all-female crew, majority of which are Saudis by the newest A320 aircraft. Flight 117, flew from #Riyadh to #Jeddah ✈️💜 pic.twitter.com/fWo08hYMd7
    — طيران أديل (@flyadeal) May 20, 2022

This comes three years after the airline introduced its first flight with a female Saudi co-pilot.
With goals to triple the annual traffic to 330 million passengers by the end of the decade, the country plans on drawing $100 billion in investments in the sector by 2030.
This is in line with the Kingdom’s aims to expand its airport offering with plans to build a major international airport in Riyadh and eight more regional airports to increase connections to 250 destinations around the globe.
In recent times, under the vision of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, several other commendable reforms have been made in relation to women’s rights.
This includes lifting the ban for women on driving and easing the guardianship rules, Other such key events including the first-ever dedicated women-only motorsport event known as Rally Jameel, took place in March 2022 and the first female undersecretary in the Ministry was appointed for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in February 2022.
