Desk Detox: This Dubai-based expert shares why it’s important to switch off after work

    Life

Words by Dr Gurveen Ranger, Clinical Psychologist, Adult Specialist at Sage Clinics
We are currently living in an era where constant connectivity is the norm.
In a lifestyle dominated by smartphones, smart watches, tablets, and coupled with the increase in remote working since the pandemic, many of us will find ourselves blurring the boundaries between work and home life.
Lack of work/life balance can also lead to disturbed sleep, especially if you are checking emails just before bed, and lower our mood. If we are find ourselves unable to ‘switch off’ after work, we are less present in our personal lives, and therefore may not experience as much enjoyment from activities as we once did and our relationships are likely to also suffer.

Not only does this impact our quality of life, but also has the opposite impact to what we may expect when it comes to how productive and efficient we are. In this article, we will look at why we struggle to disconnect, the consequences of this and most importantly – how do we do a desk detox?
Here are a few tips to ease the process:
    Set clear goals
Ask yourself, do I need a desk detox? How much work am I doing outside of hours? Why? Is doing this extra work making me feel any more on top of things? Based on your answer to these questions, set clear goals to work on – e.g., is it reducing screen time? Is it protected work times? Is a conversation with employers needed?
    Be realistic
I appreciate that for many, it may be unrealistic to expect no work outside of work hours. If this is the case for you (i.e., there are likely serious consequences of not keeping an eye on things) then setting boundaries for how much time you spend working outside of hours can be helpful. E.g., protecting time every couple of hours or so to look at emails, and engaging in other things outside of these times. This can help reduce the constant triggering of ‘threat state’ every few minutes.
    Let people know
Letting people know when you are contactable vs when you are not can help manage feelings of guilt that may arise when disconnecting. Block out time in your diaries, set “do not disturb’ notifications on when appropriate, and let colleagues know the boundaries about what constitutes emergency contact. This can also be healthy modelling for colleagues and juniors.
    Allocate tech-free zones
Protect time in your after-work schedule which doesn’t involve technology. If you work from home, is there a space where you work which doesn’t interfere with your daily home space? If not, can you hide away your work equipment when you log off? Out of sight, out of mind!
    Increase offline activities
See if you can come up with some after work activities that don’t involve technology, thus reducing the pull into constant checking of work-related material. Walks, reading, socializing can all be great ways to enhance quality of life and connect with your value systems outside of the professional sphere.
    Use digital wellbeing tools
Did you know most smartphones allow you to set limits on how much you use certain apps? You could also put ‘do not disturb’ mode on or turn off notifications when you are doing other things. Another tool many I have worked with find helpful is to remove things like email apps from easy access – they can be hidden in a digital folder on your home screen which means you have more of a chance to break the habitual cycle of opening the app every time you are on your phone – again out of sight out of mind.
Reminder – this isn’t about being completely tech free or never doing anything for work outside of work time, as let’s be honest that isn’t realistic in today’s world or desirable some industries and roles. Instead, aim for balance – take a step back, protect downtime, use smartphones in psychologically smarter ways to enhance your wellbeing and social relationships. Not only will this likely improve your quality of life, but your productivity and job satisfaction levels too. You could start today, even with something small and see how these transforms over time!

When is Eid Al-Adha? A 5-day weekend possibility in the UAE

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Are you back in the office and already feeling the holiday blues? Don’t worry, Eid al-Adha break in the UAE is just around the corner.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming Eid Al Adha celebrations in the UAE, residents can start planning for a potential extended weekend filled with festivities and relaxation.

This year, Eid Al Adha is expected to take place in less than two months’ time, offering both the public and private sectors a well-deserved break.
The holiday begins with Arafat Day, which marks the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage. Falling on the ninth day of the Islamic month of Dhuʻl-Hijjah, Arafat Day holds great significance for pilgrims visiting Mecca, who gather in Arafat to engage in prayers and reflection.
While the specific date for Arafat Day is subject to confirmation by a moon sighting committee, it is anticipated to occur around Saturday, June 15, or Sunday, June 16.
Following Arafat Day, Muslims around the world observe Eid Al Adha.  This joyous occasion, occurring on the 10th day of Dhuʻl-Hijjah, is marked by communal prayers, feasting, and acts of charity. Families and friends come together to share meals and celebrate, while also extending kindness to those in need.
In 2024, Eid Al Adha is projected to commence on the evening of Sunday, June 16, or Monday, June 17, depending on the sighting of the moon. The celebration traditionally lasts for three days, providing ample time for individuals to engage in religious observances and spend quality time with loved ones.
For employees in the UAE, the holiday brings the possibility of an extended weekend. If Arafat Day falls on June 15, a Saturday, residents may enjoy a four-day break, with the subsequent three days likely designated as holidays. Alternatively, if Arafat Day occurs on June 16, a Sunday, Eid Al Adha will commence on Monday, June 17, followed by two additional holidays on Tuesday, June 18, and Wednesday, June 19, granting residents a rare five-day weekend to unwind and celebrate.

UAE weather update: Brace for more rainfall this week

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Amidst the aftermath of a record-breaking rainfall, the UAE stands vigilant as meteorologists predict another bout of precipitation this week.
According to the latest findings from the esteemed National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the UAE experienced its most substantial rainfall in over seven decades last week, sending shockwaves across the nation. While the severity of last week’s tempest is not expected to recur, the NCM urges residents to remain cautious as they anticipate scattered showers throughout the upcoming days.

الطقس المتوقع على الدولة من الإثنين إلى الجمعة 22 – 26 أبريل 2024Expect weather over the country from Monday till Friday 22-26 April 2024 pic.twitter.com/ibjnKjcIqX
    — المركز الوطني للأرصاد (@ncmuae) April 21, 2024

As the sun rises on Monday, April 22, the UAE braces for a predominantly overcast day, accompanied by mild to moderate breezes. However, the anticipation peaks on Tuesday, April 23, as the NCM forecasts a heightened probability of light to moderate rainfall, particularly in the eastern and southern regions. In Dubai, the likelihood of precipitation hovers between 30 to 90 percent, underscoring the need for vigilance among residents.
Thankfully, relief seems imminent as the week progresses. Wednesday’s forecast offers a glimmer of hope with clearer skies and scant cloud cover, albeit with a faint chance of rainfall in the northeastern extremities. Although Thursday and Friday may witness intermittent showers, they are expected to be confined to mountainous and far northern and eastern locales.
The UAE continues to recuperate from the unprecedented storm and its cascading impacts on vital infrastructure. From public transportation disruptions to flight delays, the nation grappled with the aftermath of nature’s fury. Nevertheless, as the dust settles, normalcy gradually returns, ushering in a sense of resilience and fortitude among the populace.
As the UAE navigates through these uncertain weather patterns, one thing remains certain: the unwavering resolve of its people to weather any storm that comes their way.

Everything to know about the future of IVF treatments

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

IVF specialist, Dr. Mari Mitrani shares how technology is making an impact.
    Talk us through your background.
I’m a physician scientist with extensive expertise in biological medicine and regenerative approaches to help improve my patients’ quality of life. I am currently the Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Gattaca Genomics, the most advanced and complete preimplantation genetic testing available for embryos. Previously, I Co-founded Organicell Regenerative Medicine, as well as the American Stem Cell & Anti-Aging Center, a pioneer in Autologous Stem Cell therapy center in South America. I had been recognised as one of the ‘Top 100 Healthcare Leaders’ by IFAH for the COVID-19 therapeutic work, and most recently recognized for “Scientific Excellence” by the Academia Mundial de Terapia Neural Huneke for my contribution to science.
Can you expand on what IVF is?
Couples that are navigating through the fertility process through IVF (in vitro fertilization) have an option now to test the genetic count of those fertilised embryos. Just a few cells are taken from the embryo and sent to our state-of-the-art laboratory to analyse the gene components of those cells through Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). A final report is sent to the patients IVF doctor and the Genetic Counselor as well.
Are there any specific advancements and techniques that have improved success rates?
The IVF world has been advancing every year, thanks to hormone therapy to mature multiple eggs, quality/quantity control, embryo monitoring after fertilisation can now be done in a separate environment like a time-lapse embryo imaging system which allows the embryos to be kept in a control environment without disturbing them while the Embryologist receives high-definition images multiple times a day. Genetic testing for these embryos that are ready for implantation has also advanced to allow the experts have more in-depth information about the genetic component and therefore allow the reproductive physician to decide which embryos to implant first. Furthermore, breakthroughs in cryopreservation techniques, like vitrification, have enhanced the preservation and storage of embryos and eggs, offering greater flexibility and success rates for patients.
In your opinion, what are some of the most exciting developments or future possibilities in the IVF space.
In my field, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) techniques, such as PGT-A for aneuploidy screening and PGT-M for single gene disorders, has enabled more detailed information for embryo selection. This year, we are launching the next frontier of genetic analysis as we will be able to offer Whole Genome Sequencing, which will allow us to understand in-depth into the embryo’s genetic health. This will be very valuable for identifying many more risks of disease.

“Breakthroughs in cryopreservation techniques, like vitrification offer greater flexibility and success rates for patients.”

As an advocate for fertility preservation, what options are available for individuals or couples who wish to preserve their fertility for the future?
We have clear statistical data referring to maternal age and how it impacts the production of healthy eggs. Understanding that fertility and infertility is so multi-factorial, the one thing we really know is how to act in this specific characteristic. Now we know that after 35 years, women’s egg quality starts deteriorating rapidly year by year, and as a woman who cheers on other women to always pursue their dreams, I would say to always keep this cut-off time in the back of your mind. The possibility of freezing healthy eggs or embryos has a better impact for the future when couples are ready to start their family. Unfortunately, many couples or females wait after this age to start their fertility journey and the doctors and science can only do so much. This is the one thing I would love to keep educating women all over the world about, your chances and decision of having a family in the future is possible if you act early on.

    Dr. Mari Mitrani
Can you share any ongoing research or innovative techniques that you are currently involved in or excited about in the field of fertility treatment?
Gattaca Whole Genome Sequencing is an embryonic genetic screening which will allow us to understand more in dept the embryos genetic health, this will be valuable for identifying disease risks and therefore a future medical treatment or intervention, if needed. Given the diverse background of our staff, we are utilising artificial intelligence to further analyse and interpret data obtained through genetic testing and further dive on the morphology from time-lapse embryo machines.
Are more residents opting for IVF treatments in the Middle East?
An executive insight report by L.E.K. Consulting shows that the UAE has the highest infertility rates in APAC (Asia-Pacific) and the Middle East, mainly caused by the high prevalence of diabetes (19 percent as compared to 7percent in the U.K. and 11 percent in the U.S.) and vitamin D deficiency (70 percent as compared to 20 percent in the U.K. and 42percent in the U.S.).
What is Genetic Screening and how has this impacted the future of IVF?
ll be opting for IVF treatments to further their chances according to the data that has already been recorded. Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a genetic screening done in fertilized embryos before they are selected for implantation. PGT is advancing and innovating the fertility space, due to its added value on reporting Aneuploidy, which is the abnormal count of genes present in the embryo which explain a higher rate of miscarriages. NGS is allowing us to read valuable characteristics of embryotic genetic in which we are able to predict and or diagnose genetic disorders and diseases beforehand.
This is ‘The Tech Issue’ – how has technology improved your daily life?
I think 2024 is a great year for Tech. I’m able to open my car, garage door, pay for my groceries and more just from my phone! Who would’ve thought that this was possible? I can be in a conference call as I drive my electric car to pick up my daughter from her practice. I’m maximizing my productivity as an entrepreneur and excelling at motherhood, keeping track of my daily tasks and with new apps I can ensure I know in which part of my monthly cycle I am on. Last year, we saw women at the pinnacle of their careers and advancing the field in music, films, science, and aerospace, thanks to technology I have no doubt we will keep excelling this year.
