How your hormones can play important role in how you feel

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

Dr. Mohsen Soofian, leading physician at Hortman Clinics shares how hormones can play a vital role in how we feel.
Talk us through your background and how you became interested in wellness and anti-aging?
I am an Osteopathic Physician with American Board Certification in Family Medicine. I have advanced training through the American Academy of Anti-Aging medicine through their Fellowship for Anti-Aging, Metabolic, and Functional Medicine and the Aesthetic Anti-Aging Fellowship. This reflects five state licenses (Alabama, California, Hawaii, Florida, and New York) and I have practiced all over the United States and established my clinic in Miami (The Renaissance Clinic). I have currently joined Hortman Clinics as their mindset and goal to bring elevated wellness and longevity to the UAE matched with my passion and professional goals.
What are the main symptoms or signs that indicate the need for hormone testing?
Hormone testing in women is typically indicated when there are symptoms or signs suggesting hormonal imbalances. These may involve reproductive, metabolic, or systemic functions. Here are some of the main symptoms and signs that warrant consideration for hormone testing: Irregular menstrual cycles, Amenorrhea (Absence of menstruation for more than three months), Heavy or prolonged periods,Infertility, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Hot flashes and night sweats, Mood changes, Sleep disturbances, Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Unexplained weight changes. Hormone testing in men, on the other side, is typically indicated when symptoms or signs suggest hormonal imbalances affecting reproductive, metabolic, or systemic health. Below are the main symptoms and signs that may encourage hormone testing in men: Low testosterone (Hypogonadism), Physical changes (Decreased muscle mass and strength), Energy and Performance, Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function), Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Low cortisol (Adrenal Insufficiency), High cortisol, Cushing’s Syndrome), Estrogen imbalance, Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome, Prolactin imbalance, Fertility issues, Bone, and joint symptoms. If an imbalance is found, what treatment options are available? Different treatments are offered to patients according to their imbalances. For instance, Low Estrogen Imbalance is treated with Hormone Replacement Therapy, while High Estrogen Balance is corrected through lifestyle changes or Progesterone Therapy. With Thyroid Hormone Imbalance, Iodine, and selenium-rich foods if deficient are added to the diet. For Hyperthyroidism, Methimazole or propylthiouracil (PTU) is used to suppress thyroid activity. To lower cortisol, medications such as ketoconazole and metyrapone are used. The treatment varies on the issue and can be personalised as per each client’s requirements.
How do lifestyle factors like diet, stress, and exercise affect hormone levels?
Of course, stress, diet, and sleep are so important. If these are not made optimal then your hormone levels will suffer. Stress management, good sleep, healthy food, minimising/eliminating alcohol will help greatly in keeping your body resilient and keep hormones at healthy levels.
How important is physical fitness when it comes to balancing your hormones?
This is everything. Physical fitness will improve your bodies resiliency and release optimal levels of hormones for men and women.Testosterone has been shown to increase dramatically after exercise, also increasing endorphins in the brain, so your stress is reduced, and you have a sense of well-being. There is no shortcut or avoiding it, physical fitness is necessary to maintain health. All the studies show, the more muscle you have and the more you exercise, the less risk of mental health issues, less risk of dying, and less cancer.
Are there natural or non-prescription approaches to balancing hormones?
While natural supplements are available (such as LJ 100 for boosting testosterone), there is nothing that can replace the efficacy and treatment response we get from pharmaceutical interventions. All my patients on pharmaceutical hormones are very happy and love the treatment response they get and how tremendously it benefits their well-being. We need to understand that hormonal dysfunction is a consequence of aging, so while it is natural to experience a decline in hormones, we do not need to tolerate the decades of suffering and the symptoms that come with the aging process and suboptimal hormone levels. We can directly intervene to keep you feeling good, functioning well, and performing at your best every day. As a testament to this, I can proudly say that all my patients who startedhormones have continued, and none have stopped.

What are the common causes of hormone imbalances in women in the UAE?
Hormone imbalances in both women and men can arise from a combination of genetic, lifestyle, environmental, and medical factors. In the UAE, specific cultural, environmental, and lifestyle influences may play a role. Below are the “common causes of hormone imbalances” in women and men, with a focus on factors prevalent in the UAE. In women, they include various elements such as lifestyle factors, dietary patterns, PCOS, stress, physical inactivity, Thyroid disorders, and other external factors such as Vitamin D deficiency and more can cause these imbalances. In men, various elements such as diet, stress, lack of sleep, Hypogonadism and environment factors such as pollution, toxins and vitamin D deficiency play a big role.
This is The Optimism Issue – how do you stay positive during testing times?
I’m a big believer in stoicism, but a positive approach to it. Life happens. Life is 10 per cent of things that happens to us and 90 percenthow we respond to them. “This too shall pass” is a very powerful concept, that we just accept what has happened and that it will move on, and we can work hard to overcome it. Losing hope is the biggest sin, because if you have accepted giving up, nothing can be done. Thephrase: “It’s always darkest before dawn” is very true, because when times are bad and it may seem there is no way out, we need to countour blessings and find opportunity in every challenge that lies ahead.

Gazing at the cosmos has forever inspired humanity’s artistic spirit. Marina Fedorova’s “Cosmodreams: Elementa,” currently on display at Fann À Porter Gallery in Dubai, is a testament to this enduring fascination. This immersive exhibition, an extension of Fedorova’s ongoing Cosmodreams project, transcends the boundaries of traditional art, offering a multi-sensory exploration of humanity’s relationship with nature, technology, and the future.

Fedorova’s artistic journey began in 2017 with the first pieces of Cosmodreams. Since then, the project has blossomed into a vast universe encompassing a variety of media. Visitors to “Cosmodreams: Elementa” can expect to encounter paintings, graphic art, limited-edition prints, 3D creations, and even digital works enhanced with augmented reality. This multifaceted approach reflects the artist’s unique vision, where nature and the cosmos are not just physical realities, but deeply personal and metaphysical experiences.

Central to the exhibition is Fedorova’s deep connection with the elemental forces of water, air, and earth. These fundamental building blocks of our existence are woven throughout her works, often taking the form of swirling mists, cascading waterfalls, and billowing clouds. This juxtaposition is a thought-provoking exploration of human progress and its impact on the planet.

Fedorova’s masterful use of augmented reality allows her to seamlessly bridge the gap between the distant cosmos and the immediate present. Through this innovative technology, she creates a captivating space where viewers can actively participate in the artistic experience.

Valentino Cinema brings Federico Fellini’s masterpieces to Abu Dhabi

    Fashion

    by Ruman Baig

Abu Dhabi recently played host to Valentino Cinema, an exclusive four-night cinematic experience celebrating the iconic work of Italian film director Federico Fellini. From January 13th to 16th, the 421 Art Campus transformed into a haven for film enthusiasts, showcasing a selection of Fellini’s most celebrated films. The event, a collaboration between Maison Valentino and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), offered a unique blend of luxury fashion, art, and cultural immersion.

The Valentino Avant Les Débuts campaign, Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s first for the House, drew significant inspiration from the timeless allure of Rome and its cinematic history. Fellini, a visionary director known for capturing the spirit of Rome through his distinctive lens, served as a key influence on the campaign’s narrative. This connection between Valentino’s creative vision and Fellini’s cinematic legacy formed the foundation for the Valentino Cinema event in Abu Dhabi.
Choosing Abu Dhabi as the venue was a strategic decision. As a recognized capital of luxury fashion and elegance in the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi provides a unique cultural backdrop and an ideal platform for delivering exceptional cultural experiences. The city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant arts and culture scene aligns perfectly with Valentino’s desire to showcase Fellini’s work to an international audience.

The partnership with ADIO was crucial in bringing this vision to life. ADIO’s focus on collaborating with leading luxury retailers to redefine Abu Dhabi’s retail landscape and create innovative consumer experiences made them a natural partner for Valentino. Noura Al Foulathi from ADIO emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating that it allowed for the creation of a truly unique experience honoring Valentino’s iconic legacy in Italian cinema while reflecting Abu Dhabi’s vision for luxury. She further highlighted how the event seamlessly blends luxury fashion, arts, and the emirate’s rich cultural heritage, solidifying Abu Dhabi’s position as a global destination for world-class experiences.

The Valentino Cinema program featured a curated selection of Fellini’s masterpieces: Roma was screened on January 13th and 14th, followed by La Dolce Vita on the 15th, and 8 ½ on the 16th. The opening night was particularly special, featuring live music and a thought-provoking panel discussion moderated by Butheina Kazim, founder of Cinema Akil, the UAE’s first independent cinema. Kazim led a conversation with filmmakers Abdulla Al Kaabi, Sarah Alhashimi, and Chndy, exploring the film’s cultural impact and its enduring relevance.
Valentino Cinema provided a rare opportunity for audiences in Abu Dhabi to engage with Fellini’s cinematic genius in a sophisticated and immersive setting. The event successfully combined high fashion, art, and film, creating a memorable cultural experience that further cemented Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a hub for world-class events.

Our new studio is a seamless blend of Delano’s iconic elegance and our commitment to holistic well-being, providing guests and visitors with an environment where luxury and wellness harmonise.
To delve into her story further, Emirates Woman spoke to Everett to see how it all began.
What was your favourite subject at school?
Definitely English. I loved exploring stories, writing, and diving into creativity. It felt like a playground for my imagination.

    What was your first job?
I worked as an Equity Derivatives Sales Trader on Wall Street right out of college—intense, exhilarating, and such a great foundation for understanding business.
    What brought you to Dubai?
The mega wellness opportunity. Dubai is a hub of innovation and growth, and I knew it was the perfect place to expand and evolve in the wellness space.

What inspired you to enter the space and your brand?
It was all about finding my purpose. I wanted to create a brand that magnifies my passion for getting people to the mat and connecting with their inner selves. That obsession with movement and mindfulness drives everything I do.
    Talk us through the concept.
HWH is more than a space; it’s a connection, a community, and a sanctuary. It’s a place where people can come as they are, feel seen, and leave feeling more like themselves.
What are the key elements of your role?
Connecting with people, curating transformative experiences, and cheerleading—whether that’s my team, students, or the broader community. It’s about lifting everyone up.
Talk us through your daily routine.
Every day looks a little different, and I love that. But the constants are the mat—it’s my anchor—and carving out moments to read, write, and flow. The flexibility of working for myself allows me to find joy in each day’s unique rhythm.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
Have a clear vision and flow into it. Stay grounded in your purpose but flexible in your approach.
Tell us more about the services.
We offer yoga, Pilates, and all things elevated wellness. It’s about creating transformative experiences that go beyond the physical—mind, body, and soul alignment.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
“It must be fun.” If you’re not enjoying the journey, it’s time to reevaluate.

    And what is the worst?
“Go with the flow.” Purpose and intentionality are key—sometimes you need to swim upstream to get where you’re meant to be.
What’s the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?
Accepting that I can’t do everything. Delegating and leaning on my team has been a huge growth point for me.
What lies ahead for the brand?
We’re focused on transforming more spaces and connecting people globally through the mat. The mission is to create a worldwide ripple effect of wellness, connection, and transformation.

13 hidden speakeasies in Dubai to bookmark in the new year

For the ultimate hidden experience, speakeasies are the best way to get to know any city.
What started during the ‘Prohibition Era’ has gone on to become a modern-day refined concept today, that has now gained popularity in different parts of the world.
After taking over basements, warehouses and other hidden spaces in the 1920s in New York, speakeasy bars became a hallmark for niche cocktails and delectable delights. What first needed a password to enter is now open to the public, however, it’s only if you know you know.
    The history of the concept
The speakeasy concept originated in the United States during Prohibition (1920–1933), a time when the sale, production, and transportation of alcoholic beverages were banned under the 18th Amendment. The term “speakeasy” refers to an illicit bar or nightclub where alcohol was sold and consumed in secret.
The name “speakeasy” itself likely comes from the practice of telling patrons to “speak easy” or quietly when ordering drinks to avoid attracting attention from law enforcement. These hidden speakeasies were often located behind unmarked doors, in basements, or behind fronts like soda shops or cafes, and required passwords or secret codes to enter.
After Prohibition ended in 1933 with the passage of the 21st Amendment, speakeasies disappeared as legal drinking establishments returned. However, in the 21st century, there has been a resurgence of speakeasy-style bars, now celebrated for their secretive entrances, vintage decor, and craft cocktails, evoking the glamour and mystique of the original era.
To champion this undying spirit, Dubai has opened a plethora of speakeasies that add a hint of mystery from the moment you enter.

How has your passion for polo shaped your life and career?
Polo is more than a game for me. It is my passion. The game has shaped my personality and my world view. Like every sport, polo requires dedication, determination, resilience, and discipline. These qualities are essential for success in the game as well as in life and polo has inculcated them within me. From a young age, polo taught me to dream big and believe in myself.

What are the challenges and rewards of being a young polo player in India?
In India, the challenges of being a polo player (young or veteran) are many. Perceived as an elite sport, polo has neither the support nor the infrastructure that other sports have here. Private clubs provide the grounds, proper horses are an expensive investment which restricts inclusivity in the sport, sponsors are limited and state support is nowhere close to what cricket or hockey or other sports get here. However, when it comes to rewards, the sheer thrill of the game and the camaraderie that is an essential part of this team sport more than make up for everything. Polo is a passion and friendships built on the Polo field are for life.
What steps are you taking to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Jaipur and India?
It is a privilege for me that I am part of a lineage that is remembered for building and preserving the city of Jaipur. My ancestors not only built the city but also made major contributions in crafting its cultural and infrastructural fabric. As a custodian of that legacy, it is my constant endeavour to preserve that heritage through the management of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum Trust and the Jaigarh Public Charitable Trust. Preserving the architectural heritage of the monuments that are landmarks of Jaipur is one of my most important missions in life. Promoting the art and culture of our country is another important agenda for me and I persevere to do so through programmes like the annual Heritage Workshops in traditional arts at the City Palace as well as initiatives like the newly launched contemporary art gallery – the Jaipur Centre for Art at the City Palace, the soon to be opened Sculpture Park at Jaigarh, the Jaigarh Heritage Festival celebrating the intangible heritage of Jaipur and India, and the Sawai Jaipur Awards that are constituted to recognise and celebrate excellence in various fields including heritage conservation, culture and the arts. With my sister, I am also working towards empowering the women of Rajasthan by skill building and training in the heritage arts and crafts of the state to preserve them and enable these women artisans to become self-reliant through PDKF, a foundation set up by my mother in 2013.
How can young people connect with Indian heritage and traditions in today’s world?
Our heritage, culture, arts, and traditions are an intrinsic part of the fabric of our lives in India. From our festivals to our food, our music, our architecture, our arts and crafts, and our fashion – everything is woven together in one cohesive, vibrant tapestry. Connecting our youth with it only requires an effort to create opportunities for education about and engagement with these aspects. The Leela beautifully captures this essence by offering modern travellers a chance to experience India’s rich heritage through immersive and luxurious stays. Time Travel with The Leela – a campaign that brings India’s cultural legacy to life, offers unique experiences that connect guests with the country’s history, art, and traditions. This commitment to celebrating India’s culture aligns with my own belief that true luxury is about connecting with the soul of the country, where heritage and hospitality come together in unforgettable ways.

What are your thoughts on the role of technology in preserving and promoting cultural heritage?
Technology has a major role to play here. Social media for one is an essential tool that can be used to share the stories of our history and heritage with the world. With new developments in technology coming up every day, we can recreate lost aspects of our history through AI and VFX. New techniques are helping us in the conservation of original architectural and artistic ideas that were not mapped when they were created hundreds of years ago.
What are your future plans and aspirations for yourself and the Jaipur royal family?
Plans are many and constantly evolving but the most important part of my vision and that of my family is to work towards preserving our heritage and making Jaipur a city that welcomes everyone to come and experience all that is best of India’s heritage treasures and modern innovations.
How do you envision the future of the Indian luxury hospitality industry?
The answer to this question lies in a deeper connection between heritage and contemporary luxury, where guests not only seek opulence, but also meaningful, immersive experiences driven by a seamless blend of heritage and hyper personalization. As the demand for tailored, authentic journeys grows, brands like The Leela are making a mark by seamlessly fusing India’s royal legacy with modern sensibilities. The true essence of luxury will be defined by hyper personalization – designing experiences that connect travellers with India’s rich traditions in a way that feels both authentic and modern. Guests are now looking for experiences that go beyond lavish accommodations. The focus will shift to creating bespoke journeys that immerse travellers in the culture and heritage of India while offering the comforts of the modern world. By offering personalized and curated experiences, the luxury hospitality industry will not only cater to today’s discerning travellers but also redefine world-class hospitality, preserving India’s rich traditions for future generations.
What advice would you give to young people who are passionate about preserving Indian culture and heritage?
Respect your heritage, learn from your history, engage with your culture and participate in its preservation. Our heritage is our greatest treasure and we are it’s custodians. It is our collective responsibility to preserve it for future generations.
What are your key philanthropic focuses, and how do you balance your royal duties with your social impact initiatives?
Philanthropy is a value that has been inculcated in me from childhood. Service to the nation and working for the greater good of many has been the calling for so many members of my family that it is second nature for me and my siblings. Our primary royal duty is service to our fellow citizens and it lies at the core of everything we do, from the museums and trusts we operate to the social impact work we are trying to do with PDKF to the heritage experiences we curate in order preserve these traditions for the people of Jaipur to participate in and become a part of.
What do you consider to be the most important qualities of a good leader?
A good leader is only as good as the team he or she leads. Being able to build a great team is an essential quality that any leader must have. Apart from this, I feel a good leader must have the ability to listen to different view points in order to weigh options in a balanced manner and take the best decisions. Finally, leadership is all about setting ambitious goals and taking decisive action.
How would you describe your personal style?
     Simple, timeless, elegant.
What are your favorite fashion trends at the moment?
Old world elegance is more my fashion direction but as a sportsman I appreciate the contemporary trend of ensuring comfort in fashion and have great appreciation for fashion that pays homage to traditional techniques and crafts.
Are there any specific designers or brands you particularly admire?
US Polo Assn’s new line that I have co-created is one of my favourites right now, for obvious reasons. Aside from that I have great appreciation for young brands working in sustainable fashion.
How do you balance tradition and modernity in your fashion choices?
I keep it simple in my daily fashion choices, emphasizing on natural fabrics and well-tailored cuts and fits and lean towards traditional garment styles like the ‘Achkan’ and the ‘Bandh Gala’ for formal wear.
