      How I got my job as… Founder of this newly opened Lagree Studio in Dubai

      This week, Emirates Woman spoke to Tara Wilks, Founder of BODYROCK, the revolutionary Lagree Method studio in Dubai.
      Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.
      The highly-anticipated BODYROCK Studio has officially opened its doors, bringing the revolutionary Lagree method straight from LA. Located in the Goshi Warehouse City, Al Quoz, BODYROCK is the home of Lagree in Dubai. The studio offers a pure Lagree experience, teaching the renowned Lagree method by certified Lagree instructors on official Lagree products, adhering to the highest Lagree standards. The BODYROCK studio features 11 MINI PRO machines to deliver low-impact, high-intensity full-body workout that builds muscular strength, endurance, and core stability, all while improving body composition and enhancing tone and definition.
      To delve into her journey as an entrepreneur, Emirates Woman spoke to Wilks to see how it began.
      What was your favourite subject at school?
      It’ll come as no surprise to a lot of people but my favourite subject at school was definitely PE. I’ve always been passionate about movement, fitness, and actually just seeing what I am capable of. Whether it was team sports or just the energy of being active, PE helped shape my mindset around discipline, teamwork, and resilience, qualities that are very much instilled in me today.
      What was your first job?
      My first job was in PR working for Edelman in London on the pharmaceutical. I learned a lot and it gave me a taster of life in the corporate world. But, while I gained valuable skills and knowledge, I quickly realised that the corporate world didn’t set me on fire. I craved something more dynamic, creative, and hands-on, something that aligned with my passion and energy. That realisation ultimately led me to forge my own path in a space that truly excites me – the fitness industry.

      What brought you to Dubai?
      Dubai already felt quite familiar to me, having visited regularly since 2004. The fitness industry in Dubai was booming, and it felt like the perfect place to step away from the corporate world and actually do something that made me feel alive.
      What inspired you to enter the space and your brand?
      I’ve always dreamt of having my own brand to give people their own place of belonging and a space to reach their goals. During some of my darkest times, I found happiness in fitness studios, and I wanted to provide a space for others to feel the same.
      Talk us through the concept?
      The inspiration for BODYROCK came from my own fitness journey—I discovered that the combination of Lagree and strength training was the key to transforming my body, but also my mind too. I call this the BODYROCK formula: blending group fitness (Lagree) with strength training. I also noticed that so many people in Dubai were paying for multiple memberships at different studios just to get the mix of workouts they wanted. That’s logistically and financially challenging. BODYROCK brings it all under one roof – offering a results-driven, high-energy experience that helps people build strength, endurance, and longevity (without being in a sweaty gym!).
      What are the key elements of your role?
      When I say I do everything, I mean it. Teaching is what I love most and do the most, alongside PT sessions. As a new studio, building a strong community is my priority, which includes recruiting trainers who share my vision and vibe. For me, being on the ground is the only way to create the right energy—one that keeps people coming back.
      Talk us through your daily routine.
      I actually gave birth to my twin boys pretty much one month before BODYROCK opened! My life pretty much consists of being mum and also BODYROCK – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wake up at 5.00AM and then spend a couple of hours with my babies whilst having breakfast. I’m usually at BODYROCK from 8.30AM where I start teaching. Once I’m done teaching a non-negotiable for me is to always find time to train, whether that’s cardio or strength. I then head home around 3.00PM for family time, have dinner with my husband and then head to bed ready to rinse and repeat the next day.

      What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
      Honestly, you can do anything you want with your life, if you put your mind to it. You can also change course at any time. I entered the fitness industry at 33 and I’m now 40 – it’s just about wanting to do it and taking the leap. You need to believe you can change at any point and then find the right mentors. I’ve always worked with the best coaches to further my knowledge and better myself.
      Tell us more about the products/services?
      The Lagree method is a full body, low impact, high intensity workout, which focuses on muscular strength and endurance. It is like nothing I’ve ever done before. Lagree keeps cortisol levels down, it doesn’t stress the body but builds the body to give you that lean toned look. At BODYROCK you can attend a Lagree group class, or if you’d prefer 1-1 classes we do that too. Alongside Lagree, we offer small-group strength training in an open-air setting, creating a different vibe from traditional gyms. It’s more personalised, more focused, and designed to complement the Lagree method.
      What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
      The best piece of advice I ever received was from my dad he used to tell me all the time, “never let anyone tell you what to do in life and you shouldn’t try to tell anyone what to do with theirs”. He also was a big believer that “easy decisions result in a hard life, but hard decisions result in an easy life.” I try to carry both of these beliefs with me through all aspects of my life.
      And what is the worst?
      I actually don’t think there’s any such thing as ‘bad’ advice – it’s up to you if you take it or not.
      What’s the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?
      I have experienced some extremely difficult times in my personal life – but all have shaped me into who I am today. I am very open about my struggles that I endured in an earlier chapter in my life (and always here to speak to anyone else who might also be going through a tough time) but I am living proof that you can and will always come back stronger.
      What’s lies ahead for the brand?
      BODYROCK is still quite new and we’re just getting started. I can’t wait for people to come and try a class – the Lagree shakes are not for the faint hearted. I guess my long-term goal is to of course grow the business and have multiple studios. That would be the real dream, so watch the space.

      Spread over a sprawling three floors, at Solitaire Riyadh you can now shop collections from some of the world’s most renowned brands. While the North Plaza is more for entertainment and contemporary dining, the South Plaza is where to go for luxury fashion, jewellery and fine dining. The two are linked by two parallel streets – The Boulevard, lushly landscaped and dotted with premium fashion and restaurant brands; and Fashion Avenue, where flagship stores of prestigious brands await.
      Fashion
      In the high fashion space, coveted luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Fendi, Valentino, Jimmy Choo and Cartier all feature flagship boutiques at Solitaire Riyadh.
      Bottega Veneta
      A look inside the serene new Bottega Veneta store shows the brand’s roots brought to life through Mable, cement and walnut wood accents, all three quintessential Italian materials. Inside, the near 500 square metre space features SS25 RTW collections for men and women, plus jewellery, accessories and the Bottega Veneta fragrance collection. The Solitaire store also offers personalisation service, by which bags can be personalized with letter and symbol clips in a gold or silver finish.
      FENDI
      At the striking FENDI boutique at Solitaire, the Maison’s DNA is reinterpreted through patterns and materials inspired by local tradition. The space showcases the SS25 collection for both men and women, as well as a selection of FENDI Casa furniture.
      Gucci
      Inside Gucci’s dazzling new retail space, those shopping at Solitaire Riyadh can look forward to marble flooring and acid green and yellow carpeting elements, all designed to evoke a sense of home. Built-in displays are reminiscent of walk-in closets, and feature the latest collections across menswear, womenswear, accessories and travel. For a VIP shopping experience, a VIP room can be privatised for one-on-one appointments.  
      Buccellati
      There are also some international icons making their Saudi Arabian debut at Solitaire. Among the distinguished names debuting in the Kingdom for the first time, expect to shop Buccellati, the renowned high-jewellery and silverware brand. The boutique’s design is an ode to the elegance of the sophisticated Maison, featuring a striking parquet floor, craft wooden panels and original drawings by Andrea Buccellati. It also comes with a private salon, where clients can experience the dazzling collections in an intimate and exclusive setting.
      Other brands making their debut include Amiri, Golden Goose, Eleventy, APC and more.
      Dining
      To pair with all the retail therapy, visitors to Solitaire Mall can also expect to dine at an array of casual cafes and upscale restaurants – handpicked to suit all dining tastes. Get a taste of global cuisines at London-born Arcade Food Hall, which will open soon as Solitaire’s immersive new dining experience.

      For something more grab-and-go, spots including Joe & the Juice and Dubai’s beloved Parker’s are already welcoming guests.

      Or for a more high-end dining experience, upcoming openings include The Lighthouse, the Dubai-born restaurant and concept store; Perruche, a Paris Society concept serving classic Provencal cuisine; and Gina, a hotspot from Nice that serves quintessential Mediterranean flavours.
      Leisure
      Elsewhere, Solitaire Riyadh features a luxury gym, day spa, and beauty salon for some much-deserved pampering. For little ones, there’s family entertainment centres where endless fun awaits. And for a peaceful break from al that shopping, head to the roof garden, a serene oasis amongst the vibrant Saudi capital.

      Dubai’s diverse and vibrant culinary scene offers something for everyone, from romantic date nights to glamorous fine dining institutions and casual eateries for relaxed alfresco lunches. But this year, a new injection of haute hotspots is set to make dining in Dubai even more fabulous.

      Scott’s

      This elegant seafood restaurant is somewhat of a fine dining institution in London. Everyone from the British royals to actors including Tom Hanks and Salma Hayek have been spotted enjoying glasses of bubbly from the extensive wine list and plates of fresh seafood at Mayfair’s beloved Scott’s. And later this year it’s set to bring that quintessential glamour to Dubai’s DIFC, slated to open in Gate Village in September.

      Carbone

      New York’s impossible-to-get-into Carbone has chosen an iconic address for its Dubai debut: Atlantis The Royal. In a resort where you’ll already find hotspots like Milos and Ling Ling, Carbone is set to bring its glamourous take on New York-style Italian to Dubai later this year. Expect famed signatures like the spicy rigatoni, linguine vongole and veal parmesan to be served up by tuxedo-clad service captains in a venue of velvety jewel-hues and across a buzzing alfresco terrace.

      Hanu

      Opening imminently at St Regis Gardens is Hanu, a new homegrown concept from Sunset Hospitality – the culinary creators behind Signor Sassi, Sushisamba and Mott 32 in Dubai. While the city may be saturated with Italian, Japanese and Mediterranean restaurants, Hanu promises a new take on contemporary Korean cuisine, a largely untapped market in Dubai’s dining scene. At the culinary helm, chef Kyung Soo Moon, responsible for making Sushisamba one of Dubai’s most talked-about dining destinations, who promises to present bold takes on Korean classics. Tables featuring charcoal grills will allow for interactive dining, where guests can grill their own meat to order.

      Girl and the Goose

      A self-taught chef, Nicaraguan born Gabriela Chamorro created Girl and the Goose as a supper club that educated Dubai diners about South American cuisine. And fast forward five years, she’s set to open her first permanent restaurant in Dubai. Located in the Anantara Downtown, as was the theme of the Girl and the Goose supper club in Chamorro’s home, the Downtown eatery promises to reimagine Central American cuisine, presented with warm Latin hospitality.

      Kinugawa

      A sexy series of izakaya’s dotted across Paris, St Tropez, Courchevel and St Barths, Kinugawa is expanding into the Middle East with an opening at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab. Debuting in March 2025, the Dubai iteration will be an elegant poolside retreat, serving up contemporary Japanese cuisine and fabulous cocktails.

      Revolver

      A modern grill restaurant hailing from Singapore, get ready to experience acclaimed Revolver, opening soon at the ME Dubai. From the renowned Culinary Arts Group, it promises the same sleek and sophisticated interiors found at the original, with the whole restaurant arranged around a theatrical open-fire kitchen. Expect wood-fired South Asian dishes from star chef Jitin Joshi.

      Tattu

      Born in Manchester and now found in thriving cities across the UK, including Leeds, Edinburgh and London, Tattu will make its international expansion in the summer of 2025. Set to take dining to new heights inside the world’s tallest hotel – Ciel Tower – it marks a new chapter in the Tattu story. Rather than just a late-night dinner spot, the 25,000 square-foot Tattu Dubai will be a restaurant, pool club and a late-night lounge.

      KIRA

      Opening at a stunning rooftop location at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, KIRA comes from Addmind – the creative minds behind DIFC’s Clap and Sucre, and recently opened Relais L’Entrecote. The glittering restaurant will bring a fusion of Japanese-Mediterranean flavours to a glamorous and refined space that will house the restaurant KIRA as well as an opulent after-hours spot, LITT. Both are set to open alongside the hotel on March 14.

      China Tang

      A staple on the London dining scene, China Tang is a renowned fine dining Chinese restaurant housed in The Dorchester. So it makes sense that the final piece in the culinary puzzle at Dubai’s Dorchester – The Lana – would be China Tang. The upscale Cantonese restaurant is inspired by the art-deco era of 1930s Shanghai, and the interiors are laced with the flamboyant touches its founder Sir David Tang is renowned for. The must-order dish? The signature Peking Duck.

      Three Bro’s Kitchen

      From the three brothers that created Dubai’s smash hit Orfali Bros comes Three Bro’s Bistro, opening soon just down the road from the trio’s first restaurant in Al Wast. Although Mohammed Orfali and his brothers haven’t given many details about what to expect from their second restaurant, foodie insiders suggest it’s going to be a fast-casual restaurant. And yes, that burger will be on the menu.

      Monte Carlo Club 1863

      Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) is the brand behind many of Monaco’s ritziest hotspots, with their portfolio featuring an array of high-end hotels, casinos and restaurants across the principality. But later this year Monte Carlo SBM will open its first restaurant outside of Monaco, bringing Monte-Carlo Club 1863 to Dubai in the autumn of 2025. Monte Carlo Club 1863 will present a dazzling showcase of ‘Monaco’s culinary specialities,’ as per an official announcement. Although no location has been given, we’re sure it’s set to be one of the city’s renowned foodie destinations due to the group’s existing portfolio of iconic destinations.

      The Cullinan

      Another haute addition to the culinary scene at soon-to-open Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab is The Cullinan. From the team behind Clay on Bluewater’s and SAN Beach, this fine dining steakhouse oozes modern luxury, and will open this March. On the menu, the finest meats, seafood and seasonal produce will be presented in a bold, contemporary setting, paired with an extensive wine list that perfectly pairs with the dishes.

      When is Eid al-Fitr in 2025?
      Eid ul-Fitr is expected to take place on Sunday 30th March 2025 or Monday 31st March 2025, depending on the sighting of the moon.
      Unlike the Gregorian calendar we use today, the Islamic calendar operates on the lunar cycle. This means that all significant days in the Islamic calendar appear to shift forward approximately 11 days each year. Therefore, the sighting of the moon determines the end of the month-long period of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid.
      As with each day in the Islamic calendar, the next day begins after Maghrib prayer (just after sunset) of the same day. Eid begins after the moon has been sighted. Therefore, the last day of fasting ends at Maghrib.

      When is Ramadan 2025 in the UAE?
      Many in the UAE are beginning to plan their year, including anticipating the dates for Ramadan. While official confirmation is still pending, astronomical calculations suggest that Ramadan 2025 is likely to begin around Saturday, March 1st.

      According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, the crescent moon of Ramadan 1446 AH is expected to be born on Friday, February 28, 2025. This astronomical prediction points to the start of Ramadan on the following day. However, it’s important to note that the UAE’s official Moon Sighting Committee will convene closer to the date to conduct an official sighting. This committee’s observation ultimately determines the definitive start of the holy month.

      The Islamic calendar, being lunar, differs from the Gregorian calendar. This means that the dates for Ramadan shift each year, typically moving forward by approximately 10 days. In 2024, Ramadan commenced on Tuesday, March 12th, highlighting this annual shift.   

      What are working hours for Ramadan in the UAE?

      Working hours will be reduced by two hours across the UAE, as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). Earlier, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (Fahr) announced working hours for public sector employees. These will be from 9am to 2.30pm between Monday to Thursday, while on Fridays, work will commence from 9am to 12pm.

      Beyond fasting, Ramadan holds deep spiritual significance. It commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). During this month, Muslims engage in increased prayer, including special nightly prayers called Tarawih, during which portions of the Quran are recited.   
      Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, the fundamental principles that guide Muslim life. These pillars form the framework of Islamic practice, and Ramadan is considered the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. It’s a time for introspection, spiritual reflection, and increased devotion to Allah through prayer and good deeds, seeking forgiveness and spiritual cleansing.   

      Ramadan is a significant time for Muslims worldwide, observed through fasting from dawn until sunset. During this period, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, and smoking. This practice extends to public spaces, where non-Muslims are also expected to respect the fasting practices. It’s crucial for everyone in the UAE to be mindful of these customs during Ramadan.   

      The observance of Ramadan also impacts daily life in the UAE. Both public and private sectors typically implement reduced working hours during this period. While precise timings are usually announced closer to the date, a reduction of two working hours is common. This adjustment allows individuals to better manage their time for prayer, reflection, and family gatherings during the holy month.   

      As the anticipated start of Ramadan 2025 approaches, it’s advisable to stay tuned for official announcements from the UAE government regarding the confirmed date and any specific guidelines for the month. While astronomical predictions provide a strong indication, the official moon sighting remains the final determinant. In the meantime, understanding the significance and customs of Ramadan helps foster respect and understanding within the diverse community of the UAE.
