    A deep dive into the history of Zaha Hadid’s pioneering work in the UAE

    Born in Iraq, Dame Zaha Hadid, an ambitious and pioneering architect, took the world by storm, redefining 21st-century architecture around the globe.Combining her unwavering sanguinity for the future and her trust in the capability of innovation with progressive design, material and construction advances, Hadid consistently delivered unexpected and spectacular symbols of social evolution.Exceeding every brief, each of Hadid’s projects has its own presence and place within the architectural realm. With that, we’ve decided to delve into the history of some of Hadid’s designs which have made an impact right here in the UAE.The Opus by Omniyat– DubaiDescribed as “the building that never sleeps”, The Opus by Omniyat is Hadid’s first building in Dubai. Constructed between 2012-2020, the building is home to a collection of residences including the ME Hotel and serviced apartments, each “exploring the balance between solid and void, opaque and transparent”.The Opus by Omniyat is the first and only hotel that Hadid designed both the architecture and the interior of the hotel. The building is designed as two separate towers which amalgamate into a singular whole, reminiscent of a cube. ‘Eroded in its centre,’ the building acts as a 93 metre tall and 100-metre wide viewfinder, allowing people passing by to focus on the Dubai cityscape, through the building.When asked about the Opus, project director at Zaha Hadid Architects, Christos Passas, said, ‘The Precise Orthogonal geometries of the Opus’ elemental glass cube contrast with the fluidity of the eight-story void at its centre.”Sheikh Zayed Bridge – Abu DhabiOrganic and sinuous in form, the Sheikh Zayed Bridge was commissioned by Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and established between 1997-2010. The bridge was constructed as a third gateway crossing which links Abu Dhabi Island to the Gulf south shore.Cantilevered road decks which are suspended from symmetrical steel arches give the bridge a weightless appearance and fluid silhouette mimicking not only the water below but also desert sand dunes. Standing at 842 metres long, the bridge is flanked by a theatrical lighting system which illuminates the complex bridge in varying hues of colour by night.Bee’ah Headquarters – Sharjah[embedded content]Deep in Sharjah’s desert is the headquarters of Bee’ah, an environmental and waste management company, which Hadid designed to reflect its surroundings. Desert dunes are mimicked by curved walls, continuous lines and sloping roofs, making the 90,000 square-metre site area at one with the environment.After her death in 2016, Zaha Hadid Architecture has continued her legacy, creating some incredible buildings in recent years, including the Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre, which is currently being constructed, however, the completion date has not yet been confirmed.Hadid’s architecture within the UAE and across the globe continues to inspire and be admired by many.     A sweet video emerges of Hande Erçel and Kerem Bürsin on his birthday

    It appears people can’t stop talking about Hande Erçel and Kerem Bürsin’s budding romance.The pair went public with their relationship after holidaying in the Maldives back in April and now to celebrate Bürsin’s 34th birthday a sweet video has emerged of the Sen Çal Kapimi (You Knock On My Door) co-stars online.Playfully joking around with the birthday boy, Erçel is seen in the clip taking some cake off her co-star’s face while jokingly eating it as she, later on, shared a selfie on stories with the caption, “This is the share of the cake that fell”  as there were crumbs remaining on her nose.While working together as co-stars in the Turkish Drama series, Sen Çal Kapimi (You Knock On My Door), the actors sparked rumours of a romance in the second half of last year.To mark Bürsin’s birthday, the Turkish actress even took to Instagram to share a sweet photo of the pair together. “Stay close to people who feel like sunshine, Happy birthday to the funniest part of my life, so lucky to have you,” she captioned the post.With the rumors of the duo being a couple, confirmed through a series of their latest posts and visit to the Maldives, the pair have been slightly more open about their relationship status, as Bürshim also shared this image of them sitting in a glass canoe together with the caption, “In the middle of the ocean with a canoe and just the two of us…perfect.”

    The actress’ new relationship comes after her split from her former partner Murat Dalkılıç. The pair got engaged at the beginning of 2020 after dating for three years, only to split five months later.

    #InternetShutdown: A global outage of the biggest sites in the world

    A global outage of some of the most high profile websites in the world has occurred.Major global news websites including the BBC, The New York Times, the UK government website, CNN and more were affected by the outage. Meanwhile, sites such as Amazon, Hulu, Twitch, Reddit, Pinterest and HBO Max were also affected.Shopify, an e-commerce software which many brands use, was also affected by the glitch.It’s been reported the disruption was due to an error that occurred with US-based cloud service company, Fastly.Many sites came up with the error message “Error 503 Service Unavailable”, while others said a “fastly error” or simply “unknown”.In a statement addressing the outage, hosting company Fastly said, “We identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration. Our global network is coming back online.”With Fastly acting as a cloud service company to so many websites worldwide, some joked it was “the day the internet stopped”.

Mistakes are made, but big lessons are also learned.Makeup and perfume mogul Mona Kattan knows this all too well, but is hoping to inspire those currently in this stage of life with some key lessons she’s learned during this pivotal decade.Taking to Instagram, Kattan recently revealed the six key things she learned during her 20s, something she recently discussed in a longer YouTube video.Sharing invaluable advice about everything from family to work to relationships to health and more, here are the main lessons Kattan learned in her 20s.Start therapy earlier onIn the video, Kattan discussed the topic of therapy. It was something she was keen to do for a long time, but was afraid of speaking out. However, she eventually sought help in her 30s. An advocate for mental health, she states that “developing yourself has the biggest return on investment than anything else”. She highlighted that it’s “more [important] than your education, more than doing any courses, more than investing in the stock market”.Stay away from gossipersWhen discussing friendships, in relation to gossipers, Kattan firmly stated it’s a “waste of your time”. She added, “You do not need to surround yourself with people who talk about other people.”Gossiping was not part of Kattan’s family life, however, Kattan felt “drained” by people she was friends with at a young age as they were always talking about others.Say ‘no’ moreKattan explains that she was putting other peoples feelings ahead of her own in relationships and working environments during her 20s.  She felt “obliged” to continue relationships with certain people so she didn’t hurt their feelings.Don’t let go of your healthFrom the ages of 14 to 23, Kattan was “obsessed” with her health and “always working out”. However, when she graduated from university she admits she struggled with her diet and exercise regime. Passionately speaking to her followers in relation to health she said, “Without it, you really do have nothing.”Trust your gutStating that “your feelings are your compass”, the YouTube star explains that disconnecting from your feelings can make you miss red flags throughout your 20s.“[Your gut] is an accumulation of intelligence that your subconscious picks up when you cant pick it up yourself,” Kattan said.Never compare yourself to othersIn relation to relationships, career progression and social media, the mogul suggests that “comparison is the thief of joy”.     The 19 destinations Dubai residents can now travel to quarantine-free

    As many people are gearing up for summer travels, Dubai-based airline Emirates has announced a list of 19 destinations where residents will be able to travel to quarantine-free for those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.It was announced by the airline that starting from July, over 280 weekly flights will be in operation from Dubai to six key hubs – Europe, the USA, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Mexico.From June 7, Spain will be the newest destination to be added to the list, allowing UAE residents to visit over 30 cities without having to quarantine, provided travellers are fully vaccinated at least 14 days before the date of departure.Tourists must have had a vaccination authorised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or from WHO’s Emergency Use Listing. On arrival, visitors will have to provide proof of vaccination in the form of a certificate. Approved vaccinations include the Pfizer BioNTech, Sinopharm and Oxford/AstraZeneca, all of which are currently available in the UAE.If vaccinated parents are travelling with a child under the age of six, the child will also be allowed entry. Any children over the age of six will have to present a negative PCR test result to be granted entry.International travellers must also complete the Health Control Form (FCS) online before arrival.The full listEurope

First thing in the morning, when I get up, I drink a glass of water and then jump into a cold shower to wake my body up for a fresh start to the day. I prepare a healthy breakfast which usually eggs and avocado, accompanied with a black coffee to re-energise my system. Lastly, I do my daily ritual of expressing gratitude and list everything I am blessed with in my life.In terms of fitness, do you subscribe to the theory you are what you eat?Yes, our body reflects what we consume. Our diet is central to our health and it provides our body with necessary nutrients that help it function well.Improper eating habits and unhealthy foods can lead to negative results, such as stomach or liver concerns, diabetes, arthritis, and heart diseases. Maintaining good levels of energy throughout the day is imperative. Bananas, oily fish, brown rice, sweet potatoes and eggs all provide the required energy for your body.Moreover, the food we consume produces chemicals in our brain that impact our mood, attention and focus. Combining carbohydrates with lean proteins and vegetables can help boost serotonin (the feel-good chemical) in our brain. For improved concentration, include protein foods in your diet as these will help increase the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine. Consume fresh fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants as it is linked to heightening happiness.How long should you ideally give yourself if you want to see results and how consistent do you need to be in training?As body types differ, the time required to see the expected results will depend on the diet and fitness regime set in place to achieve your fitness goals. Although it might take few weeks, the combination of a well-balanced diet and regular exercise can guarantee permanent, positive changes of the body.You can expect to see changes from as early as three months if you’re consistent. You cannot out-train a bad diet. What you eat and how much of it is consumed both play a crucial role in optimizing your body. The healthiest path is to understand your body and design the best diet that caters to the entire body and not just the abs or waistline. Consult a dietitian or a nutritionist to develop a diet that can be incorporated into your everyday lifestyle to help you lose weight and also maintain your ideal weight.Develop a diet that has plenty of delicious options, healthy choices, a few of your favourites but excludes some unhealthy items such as junk food and sugary beverages. Some excellent food items to include in one’s diet are fresh produce, wholegrain bread, healthy fats from avocado, peanuts, olives and more, and lean protein.What is the optimal time of day to work out and why?Scientifically, mornings are considered the best time to work out. Exercising in the morning helps draw more energy from the body’s fat reserves as cortisol and the growth hormone, both of which are involved in metabolism, are elevated in the morning. This supports gradual weight loss. Research also states that people who exercise in the morning have lesser of an appetite throughout the day which helps protect them from gaining weight.Working out first thing in the morning, particularly on an empty stomach, is the most effective way to burn fat and is therefore perfect for weight loss. This is largely due to the fact that the body’s hormonal composition in the morning is programmed to achieve that goal.Nevertheless, regular exercise is important no matter when you choose to do it. If your mornings are fully occupied, find a time in the day that fits your schedule and stick to it. Consistency is key. By maintaining a consistent workout regime, you will observe greater benefits and reach targets faster than when the workouts are done at different times every day.How can you ensure to maintain your training whilst on vacation?Plan the days during your vacation and set aside at least 30 minutes for a quick workout. Develop a condensed yet effective workout regime for your holidays so that it is not time-consuming but guarantees the same benefits as your usual, daily workout plan. Additionally, try to maintain your set diet to ensure sudden changes in meals do not affect your body weight or muscle mass.Another option to ensure you have an adequate amount of exercise during the holidays is by taking walks instead of car rides whilst visiting places. Walking or cycling is an excellent form of cardio that is necessary for weight loss, therefore, walking or cycling for a good period throughout the day will help maintain body weight and energy.What key equipment should you pack?During vacations, I personally think our own body weight is the best partner for an everyday workout. There is a variety of exercises and workouts to try out without the need for any equipment. This also reduces the stress of possible heavy luggage.If I were to choose travel-friendly equipment to maintain a good physique throughout a vacation, it would be dumbbells. Some exercises that can be practised using dumbbells are lunges, biceps curls, lateral raises, and floor press. A skipping rope is also great travel-fitness equipment. It is lightweight and portable and can be used anywhere at any time. Skipping helps improve flexibility, strength, stamina, and coordination.BOX OUTPlease detail how to achieve the precise movement you need for each of the 5 key exercises above.DeadliftStand with your mid-foot under the bar and your feet shoulder-width apart. With slightly bent knees, grasp the bar with your hands just away from the legs. Lift your chest engaging your scapula and core. Pull the bar close to your body, extending the knees and hip. Keep the abs braced to maintain an arched lower back and a strong and stable body.SquatsStand straight with feet hip-width apart. Tighten your core muscles. Lower down, as if sitting on an invisible chair. Drive your hip back and down, until the hip joint is lower than your knees. Straighten your legs to lift back up.Push upBegin at a plank position. Place your hands on the ground slightly wider than your shoulder width. Straighten your arms and legs and tighten your core. Lower your body driving your elbows slightly back until your chest nearly touches the floor. Push yourself back up.Pull-upsPosition yourself beneath the bar. Grip the bar with your hands slightly away from your shoulder-width. With your hands slightly farther than shoulder-width apart, grip the bar.
