5 Quotes About Confidence From Bontle Modiselle

It wasn’t until 2024 that Bontle Modiselle found a fitting term that sums up what she does for a living – hence the title multi-disciplinary Artist. The choreographer, dancer, dance instructor, TV host, MC, musician and actress kicked off her dance career at 15, a passion she attributes to legendary 90s kwaito group Boom Shaka. “I was around age six when Boom Shaka was all the rage and my late dad recorded the music video to their hit single It’s About Time on videotape,” she recalls. Little Bontle would reenact and perfect the moves so well that she became the trusted entertainer at family gatherings. Then, throughout primary school, ballet and rhythmic gymnastics helped set the path for her future career. Fast forward to 29 years later…Bontle’s commanded many local and international stages, as well as judged many dance competitions – all this while mastering the art of performative confidence. Below, we gleaned some insights from our March/April 2025 Breakthrough interview with the mom-of-one. Prepare to be inspired!READ MORE: 30 Life-Changing Books To Help You Become Healthier, Wealthier, Happier & More In 2025Confidence Cannot Be Worn“I grew up looking and sounding confident. But what most people didn’t know was that my confidence was performative. Growing up, most parents would innocently bark an order such as: ‘Don’t go out into the world looking like that or don’t ever look like your problems!’ This instilled a sense of, ‘I can always wear confidence and that it should always be tied to external validation’ — something that stripped away my sense of autonomy. And with no sense of autonomy, I could form my own opinions without first wanting to get them approved. Over time, I’ve had to trust that my opinion is exactly that — mine. I owe no one an explanation.”You Don’t Always Have To Check In“For instance, before, whenever my husband would ask me a question, I’d always check in and want to know his answer so I could phrase mine to be as close to his as possible. That was the people-pleaser in me!” But now – even though it took a while – Bontle’s confidence is not defined by how she looks. In fact, she couldn’t care less about physical traits! “Now, my confidence is intertwined in my self-acceptance, self-awareness and being honest about where I am and how I feel!”READ MORE: Jeannie D Shares Her Fitness Goals For 2025 (Plus, A Meal You’ll Want To Try)The Happier Side Of Life“My basis of confidence is different. It’s me going through a lot, yet still not seeking external validation. In interviews as a TV host, whenever someone would ask me what kind of content I enjoyed watching, I would cower and want to mention something profound when the truth of the matter is that I love trash TV and game shows — the type that helps me switch my brain off and do very little thinking after a long day. And if that makes me shallow in someone’s eyes, that’s okay, too!”I Am Not My HairBontle rocked her trademark dreadlocks for 15 years before waking up one morning and deciding to chop them off in April 2023. This, despite a nagging fear that they were a great part of her identity. Greatest lesson? “I am not, and was never my hair! Locs are currently a part of my identity, my hair always has been. People may receive a different message from the one I intend to send but either way, my hair will always say something. Right now my hairstyles scream “I AM FREE!”. Free of lengthy washing and frequent styling sessions. Free of failed twist outs and free to let my hair be. Unless I personally want a style change, I do not think I will be wearing a wig anytime soon.”READ MORE: 18 Books That Will Get You Out Of A Deep Reading SlumpI Don’t Always Have To Be Everyone’s Friend“After winning a beauty pageant in primary school which came with a big hamper of sweet delicacies, I found myself with nearly half the school wanting to be friends with. I was a reserved child who only came alive during ballet. Naive, I shared my goodies with all the kids who lined up feigning interest in me. By Monday, all those kids were gone and pretended like they didn’t know me. Shattered and embarrassed, I went back to my shell. Since then, friendship became a weird concept for me. It also became about people sticking around only when they needed something from you. Over time, I had to learn to trust in the magic of friendship again. And I could only do that once I started believing that I was worthy of healthy friendships and not basing friendships on what I could give — but be open to receiving too!”Check out Bontle Modiselle’s Breakthrough interview in the March/April 2025 issue of Women’s Health. 20 refined coffee table books for a minimal interiors game

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

Designed for the avid traveller, minimalist and art enthusiast, coffee table books have become a décor staple in every home.
As a visually stunning aesthetic designed to be placed on coffee tables, bedside tables, dining tables and even TV consoles, coffee table books have gained immense popularity over the years with its thick glossy pages created to educate readers of all ages.
Whether you’re looking to spruce your home or gift a memoir to your loved one, these eye-catching books can seamlessly fit into any shelf.

    Stack them in layers
Arrange 2-4 books in a neat stack, largest book at the bottom, gradually smaller on top. Additionally, you can also have one tall stack of books next to a shorter stack to add visual interest.
Use as a base for decor
Place decorative items on top, such as a small vase, a candle, or a sculpture. This adds height and layers to your coffee table. Keep the decor proportional to the stack—nothing too big that will cover the books entirely.

    Fan them out
Instead of stacking, you can fan out a few books. This allows the covers to be visible and gives a more relaxed, casual look.
    Mix with objects
Combine the books with other objects like trays, bowls, or plants. This gives a curated look without overwhelming the space.
If you’re looking to elevate the style of your own space or round it out with the perfect finishing touch, a curation of tomes that meets your interests and tastes is absolutely the way to go.
With eye-pleasing artwork and carefully curated pages, Emirates Woman has curated a guide of all the best coffee table books to invest in.

How I got my job as… Co-Founder of Versace Home Dubai

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

This week, we chat with Svitlana Antonovych, the Co-Founder of Versace Home Dubai. Her background focuses on being a creative interior designer and architectural designer, with an eye for detail.
Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.

Versace has announced the opening of a new flagship location for Versace Home in Dubai. The store, located in Dubai Mall, marks a significant expansion of the brand’s presence in the Middle East.
To delve into her journey, Emirates Woman spoke to Antonovych, to see how it all began.

What was your favourite subject at school?
I have always loved art and literature. These subjects taught me to think creatively, appreciate aesthetics, and understand cultural contexts—skills that are essential in my work today.
    What was your first job?
My first job was in the visual arts field—I started as an assistant at a design studio, where I helped with interior projects and concept development.

    What brought you to Dubai?
Dubai is a city of opportunities, where design and art are highly valued. I moved here because I wanted to work in an environment where architecture and interior design are constantly evolving, and where clients are open to bold ideas
What are the key elements of your role?
My role includes, developing interior concepts, selecting materials and furniture, communicating with clients and contractors, overseeing project execution and visualising and directing creative aspects
Talk us through your daily routine.
Each day starts with analyzing tasks: meeting with clients, developing new concepts, and discussing projects with the team. Sometimes, my schedule includes site visits, material selection, or seeking inspiration in art and architecture.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
When it comes to leading an interior design brand, it’s important to train your eye for design and develop your taste. Don’t be afraid to try new things, learn from the best and gain as much experience as possible Also, focus on patience and attention to detail as this is the key in this field.
Tell us more about the products/services?
I work on full-cycle projects—from concept to completion. This includes developing design concepts, selecting materials, overseeing the execution, and final styling of the space.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
“Design is not just about beauty, it’s about meaning.” A space should be comfortable, inspiring, and tailored to the client’s needs.

    And what is the worst?
“Do what everyone else is doing, it works.” Uniqueness is the key to success. If you simply follow trends, you’ll never create something truly valuable.
What’s the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?
Working in a highly competitive industry. It’s crucial not only to deliver quality designs but also to anticipate trends, adapt, and maintain a strong individual style.

What’s lies ahead for the brand?
I plan to expand my projects, work with international clients, integrate new technologies into design, and create spaces that inspire.

The genius behind bkry on changing the f&b landscape in Dubai

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

Co-founder Abdalla Ibrahim Almulla shares his journey as an Emirati entrepreneur and driving force behind “Behind the Cup” (BTC). The concept focuses on his love for equestrian culture through coffee shops such as Hoof, bkry, theHUT and ARCHERS.
What inspired you to launch Behind the Cup – tell us more.
Behind the Cup was born out of a desire to celebrate stories—the stories of coffee, community, and culture. For me, coffee is more than just a beverage; it’s a craft that connects people. I wanted to create a platform where coffee lovers could not only indulge in premium brews but also feel the passion and craftsmanship behind every cup. Inspired by my love for equestrianism, a sport that demands discipline and dedication, I envisioned a space that mirrors these values while elevating the coffee experience.
You turned your for business, coffee, and equestrian culture into a thriving enterprise – tell us more.
Both coffee and equestrian culture share an elegance that comes from passion, patience, and precision. At Behind the Cup, we weave these worlds together by creating spaces that are refined yet approachable. The journey from one café in Muweilah to multiple ventures across the UAE is a testament to how authenticity resonates. Each sip of coffee or moment spent in our cafés reflects the same spirit of excellence I’ve always admired in horses—graceful, powerful, and inspiring.

Bkry has been a popular space since day one – what sets it apart?
bkry is more than a bakery – it’s an artisanal experience. From the moment you step in, the aroma of freshly baked pastries invites you into a world of craftsmanship. What truly sets bkry apart is the harmony of flavor and innovation. Whether it’s the pecan salted caramel croissant or our signature sourdough, each creation is a blend of artistry and quality. We’re not just serving food; we’re serving moments to savor.
Do you incorporate locally sourced or sustainable ingredients in your products?
Absolutely. We are committed to sustainability and supporting local producers whenever possible. For example, at bkry, we’ve partnered with UK Wild Farmed Flour for our upcoming range, emphasizing regenerative agriculture. Our coffee sourcing is equally intentional—we work with farmers who share our passion for sustainability and ethical practices, ensuring every cup tells a meaningful story.
How do you maintain quality and consistency as the brands grow?
Consistency is rooted in our team’s dedication to the craft. From baristas to bakers, we invest in training and knowledge-sharing to ensure every product meets our standards. We also collaborate with the best – whether it’s working with expert roasters or sourcing premium ingredients. Growth is exciting, but we’ve made a promise to never let it compromise quality, and we honor that by staying true to our values.
“Tranquility comes from embracing the present.”
Do you collaborate with other brands or chefs in Dubai? If so, how has that Impacted your business?
Collaboration is a cornerstone of creativity. Partnering with local chefs, brands, and even artists allows us to push boundaries and create unique experiences. For instance, our partnerships have led to exclusive menus, pop-up events, and even limited-edition products. These collaborations not only enrich our brand but also strengthen our connection with the community.

What’s your approach to staying calm as an entrepreneur?
Staying calm is about perspective. Equestrianism has taught me the importance of balance – there will always be challenges, but staying grounded is key. I make it a point to step away and recharge, whether it’s spending time with family, connecting with nature, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. In those moments, I find clarity and focus.
What advice would you give to your younger-self?
Dream big but stay patient. Great things take time, and every setback is a setup for growth. I’d also remind myself to listen more – whether it’s to mentors, team members, or even customers. The best ideas often come from unexpected places.
What’s next in the pipeline for the brand?
We’re constantly evolving. This year, we’re focusing on opening our franchisee brand, Maxzi – Good Food Shop, in Aljada, Sharjah – a space that blends exceptional dining experience. It’s an exciting step forward in expanding our footprint and sharing our values with a wider audience. For bkry, we have ambitious expansion plans in the works, bringing our artisanal creations to new locations and elevating the pastry experience for even more communities. We’re also exploring new culinary concepts and creative collaborations to surprise and delight our community. The journey ahead is full of growth and innovation, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.

How do you stay tranquil during testing times?
Tranquility comes from embracing the present. In testing times, I remind myself of why I started – passion and purpose are powerful motivators. I also rely on my team; knowing I’m surrounded by talented, dedicated individuals gives me peace of mind. And of course, a perfectly brewed coffee never hurts – it’s my daily ritual of calm amidst the chaos.

    Portable Power Bank
Ensure your phone stays charged throughout the day, especially if you’re out exploring or taking lots of photos.
    Universal Travel Adapter
If you’re traveling internationally, a universal adapter is crucial to charge your phone in different countries with varying plug types.
    Charging Cable
Pack an extra long or braided charging cable, which can be more durable and reach those hard-to-access outlets.
    Protective Phone Case
A sturdy, shock-absorbent case protects your phone from drops and other potential damage while on the go. If you’re looking for something more fashionable, a phone wallet with a chain is the perfect go-to accessory while travelling.
    Screen Protector
To avoid scratches or cracks, especially if you’re going to be in environments where your phone might be at risk.
    Car Mount
Useful if you’re renting a car and need to use your phone for navigation.
