Dubai-based influencer urges caution about beauty industry after hospitalisation

When it comes to beauty these days, there’s so many treatments available that it’s hard to keep track of. Whether it be facials, manicures or pedicures, brows, waxing, laser treatment – the list really is endless.
However, given that so many treatments are widely used nowadays we rarely think to stop about the side effects some of them can have. More often than not, you there will be no side effects whatsoever, but there is always a chance.

This is exactly the case Dubai-based influencer Leena Kaziz found herself in when she went for an LVL lash treatment – it stands for length-volume-lift where the lashes are straightened with a serum to appear more lifted.
It was a treatment Leena had never had before, but what she wasn’t expecting was the severe reaction she was going to have to the treatment, which resulted in her being hospitalised.

After having her LVL treatment done mid last month, Leena began to notice some redness and some slight dryness, but it was when she was trying to go to sleep that she felt a sharp pain in her eyes.
Leena didn’t immediately go to hospital instead, she waited for the salon to open the next day to share pictures with them. She tells Emirates Woman that she didn’t think “it was that severe”.
“Later I found out I had a severe infection in my eyes and eyelids as well as a severe allergic reaction,” she reveals. “The allergic reaction increased with time and reached a point where my eyes where fully closed.
“The infection affected my sight even after my eyes were manually opened. My doctor was scared that the infection would reach behind my eyes and closer to my brain.”

Leena made the decision to share her story with her followers on Instagram as a warning to take precautions when undergoing beauty treatments and “to create awareness” for others.
“Everyone needs to know what happened,” she explains. “We really don’t have significant awareness about the risks we are exposing ourselves to. This treatment is so accessible and is available in most salons – a lot could go wrong.”
Even three weeks on, Leena still isn’t fully recovered.
“My eyes and eyes lids are still being irritated from the product,” she says. “I still need a month of medication and my skin is still not back to normal.”
Admittedly, the Syrian native calls this whole ordeal a “life-changing experience” and a “wake up call”.
“We are often too obsessed with becoming prettier and more appealing that we forget to really protect ourselves from our own self,” she says.
“Having said this doesn’t mean that I will stop taking care of my beauty, not at all. But when you are fully aware of how precious your body is you tend to be pickier and more cautious.”

Going forward, Leena believes that a patch test should be mandatory for consumers not just for an LVL treatment, but any treatment.
She believes people need to have the same consciousness when it comes to the beauty industry as any other.
“As consumers we have become very educated and picky with our food industry,” she says. “We read labels, do research and make conscious decisions on the products we consume. I hope that my experience will make as many women as possible become as picky with the beauty industry.”
And on a final note, she’s encouraging everyone to see their body “beyond just the outside”.
“Appreciate yourself and the preciousness of your body,” she says. “Remind yourself of how lucky you are that your body works day and night to make you alive.
“Because when you constantly remind yourself of that you will be more cautious, and you will do more research and make wiser choices.”

Dubai issues updated travel guidelines for UAE citizens, residents and visitors

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, countries are changing and adapting guidelines as best they can in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.
With that, Dubai has outlined new travel guidelines for citizens, residents and tourists, per an announcement from the emirate’s Supreme Committee of Crisis & Disaster Management.

In a statement from Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management said the amendments are to “ease hassles for passengers and exempt citizens from additional procedures without compromising on precautionary measures”.
One of the most notable updates to the guidelines includes changes to when a COVID-19 test is required before leaving Dubai. Now UAE residents, citizens and tourists who are departing from Dubai only need to undergo a PCR test if their destination country requires a certified negative result.

Meanwhile there’s other guidelines pertaining to whether you are a UAE citizen, resident or visitor arriving in Dubai.

Passengers flying with Etihad now have a COVID-19 test included in their ticket

Abu Dhabi-based airline Etihad Airways is now including a COVID-19 test in the price of tickets for those departing from the UAE capital.
Up until the end of the year, Etihad customers departing from Abu Dhabi International Airport will be entitled to a COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test at Life Medical Diagnostic Centres around the UAE as part of the cost of their ticket.

However, this does not include those flying to China.
Discussing the new launch, Dr Nadia Bastaki, the Vice President of Medical Services for the airline said: “We are confident this partnership will provide Etihad, and most importantly our guests, with Life Dx’s superior testing technologies so they can travel from the capital with greater peace of mind.”

She also added it’s a “further step” to help passengers feel “secure and protected” when travelling with the airline.

Abu Dhabi borders open to tourists
This comes after it was announced Abu Dhabi’s borders are now open to tourists.
The reopening of the borders to international travellers is to “support recovery plans of the country’s tourism sector and economy”, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) said.
However, unlike neighbouring emirate Dubai, those arriving into Abu Dhabi those who are arriving from an international destination – whether they are tourists or residents – must quarantine in their homes or a hotel room for 14 days even if they test negative for COVID-19.
Etihad Airways will include a Covid-19 test in the price of tickets for UAE customers departing from Abu Dhabi until the end of the year.

Disney+ casts it’s Muslim superhero for a new series Ms Marvel

Last year Disney held an event announcing the upcoming series for the streaming platform including a live action series Ms Marvel – the first Muslim superhero in Marvel’s comics and cinematic universe.

Not much was known about the series apart from it was going to be led by British-Pakistani screenwriter, comedian and feminist Bisha Ali, but now Marvel has finally found it’s leading lady.

Iman Vellani has been chosen to portray Ms Marvel, a Pakistani-American teenager, with the ability to change her size and shape. In the comics, Kamala is a teenager who admires fellow super-heroine Captain Marvel, so maybe we could expect a Brie Larson cameo.
The character was created by writer G. Willow Wilson who is also a Muslim woman and was born in America. Ms Marvel aims to reflect the life of a Muslim girl in America while also contributing to Marvel’s initiative for wider representation. In the past few years, the studio released Black Panther led by an African-American cast and Captain Marvel, their first female superhero to get her own film.
