How I got my job as..Head of Design at a sustainable streetwear brand

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.
This week, we’re giving the spotlight to Nicoletta Ginetti, Head of Design, FIFTY MADE – an eco-conscious luxury streetwear brand by The Giving Movement.
To find out more about how she acquired the position, Emirates Woman talks to the designer about her foray into the world of fashion, her early days at Just Cavalli and Philipp Plein and how it all shaped her design ideology to helm this new sustainable brand.

Can you share more about your journey into the fashion world after your studies at the Institute of European Design in Rome?
After wrapping up my time at IED in Rome, I kicked off my career as a Junior Womenswear designer at Roberto Cavalli. Two years later, I decided to switch things up and joined Philipp Plein, where I really hit my stride. Over the next six years, I worked my way up from Junior to Senior Designer, eventually landing the role of Head Designer. It’s been a wild ride, especially overseeing the women’s line and making my mark in the fashion game.
Starting as an upcoming designer, you’ve reached prestigious positions at iconic fashion houses. How did these experiences shape your approach to design?
Beginning as an emerging designer and progressing through iconic fashion houses has been a transformative journey. These experiences have profoundly shaped my approach to design by instilling a keen understanding of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the importance of pushing creative boundaries. Working with renowned brands has honed my ability to blend tradition with innovation, resulting in a design philosophy that values both the timeless and the avant-garde. Additionally, the exposure to diverse styles and global perspectives has enriched my creative palette, influencing a more inclusive and versatile approach to fashion
Your role in designing the women’s collection for “Just Cavalli” and later leading the womenswear line at Philipp Plein is impressive. Can you highlight some key influences and innovations you brought to these roles?
At Just Cavalli, I was still at the very early stages of my career, learning and drawing inspiration from contemporary art and global street style. Transitioning to Philipp Plein, I led the women’s line with a focus on glamour and rebellion. I incorporated edgy elements like embellishments and unconventional textures, aligning with the brand’s daring aesthetic.

FIFTY MADE is described as redefining luxury streetwear. How did your global experiences and collaborations contribute to the brand’s vision?
Drawing inspiration from diverse cultures around the world, I’ve infused a unique global perspective into the brand’s aesthetic. Collaborating with creators from different regions has not only added authenticity to our collection but also allowed us to celebrate traditional craftsmanship within the context of luxury streetwear. The fusion of Eastern and Western influences, a hallmark of my global experiences, is evident in the design philosophy of FIFTY MADE. It goes beyond fashion, embodying a cultural dialogue that resonates with a broad and diverse audience. Moreover, my commitment to sustainable practices, cultivated through exposure to varied fashion landscapes, has influenced FIFTY MADE’s emphasis on ethical sourcing and responsible production methods.
Could you elaborate on the creative process behind FIFTY MADE? How do you balance designing in Dubai and crafting in Italy to achieve the brand’s distinctive style?
The creative process behind FIFTY MADE is a delicate dance between the vibrant energy of Dubai and the timeless craftsmanship of Italy. It begins with drawing inspiration from the rich cultural tapestry of Dubai, embracing its modernity and blending it with the brand’s Italian roots. The juxtaposition of these influences sparks the initial design concepts, embodying the essence of luxury streetwear. Once the designs take shape, the process transitions to Italy, where meticulous craftsmanship comes into play. Collaborating with skilled artisans, the designs are brought to life using traditional Italian techniques and high-quality materials. This fusion of contemporary design from Dubai and the artisanal craftsmanship from Italy results in FIFTY MADE’s distinctive style – a harmonious blend of cultural contrasts.
The brand focuses on limited and entirely exclusive pieces. What inspired this approach, and how do you envision it impacting the fashion landscape?
The decision to focus on limited and entirely exclusive pieces for FIFTY MADE stems from a desire to cultivate a sense of rarity and uniqueness within the brand. This approach is inspired by the notion that true luxury lies in exclusivity, offering discerning customers an opportunity to own something truly exceptional.

As the Head of Design, what do you consider the defining elements that make FIFTY MADE stand out in the ever-evolving fashion industry?
As the Head of Design at FIFTY MADE, the brand’s standout features include its unique cultural fusion of Dubai and Italian influences, the focus on limited and exclusive pieces for a sense of rarity, a commitment to sustainability, storytelling through design, a dedication to quality craftsmanship, and leadership in redefining luxury streetwear. These elements collectively position FIFTY MADE as a distinctive and influential presence in the dynamic fashion landscape.
What is your ultimate mission with FIFTY MADE, and how do you aim to achieve the goal of transcending the ordinary to the extraordinary in the minds of fashion enthusiasts?
FIFTY MADE’s ultimate mission is to redefine luxury streetwear by seamlessly blending global cultural influences, emphasizing exclusivity, and upholding sustainability. The brand aims to achieve this by consistently innovating in design, producing limited and exclusive pieces, and gaining global recognition through strategic partnerships. FIFTY MADE aspires to transcend the ordinary in the minds of fashion enthusiasts, creating an extraordinary and iconic presence in the industry.

Online Schengen visa application may soon be available for UAE residents

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

The European Union has approved groundbreaking changes to the Schengen Visa process, ushering in a new era of convenience for travellers.
Soon, applicants will experience a seamless online application system, eliminating the need for consulate visits and the hassle of visa stickers on passports.
Spain’s Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, emphasized the simplified process, highlighting that the digital shift aims to benefit both travelers and national administrations.
The future EU visa application platform promises a user-friendly interface where applicants can effortlessly input details, upload digital documents, and complete fee payments.

Notably, the era of in-person consulate visits will fade away, with exceptions limited to first-time applicants, individuals with outdated biometric data, and those holding new travel documents.
Furthermore, the traditional visa stickers will be replaced by a secure digital format using a 2D barcode with cryptographic signatures, a move aimed at minimizing security risks associated with counterfeit and stolen stickers.
While the effective date awaits publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, these transformative changes signify a significant leap forward in streamlining the Schengen Visa process.

In Pics: Kylie Jenner’s Dolce Vita summer in Italy

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Kylie Jenner has officially entered her soft-girl era.
It may or may not have been the influence of a certain French celebrity boyfriend, but the beauty Moghul is all about embracing her grace these days. The 26-year-old reality star has ditched her sultry sartorial side for a more prairie girl vibe, and we are here for it.
Think country, cottagecore, corsets, and flowing romantic dresses – her aesthetic represents a slow and gentle vacation life. Recently, the youngest Kardashian-Jenner sibling took a family vacation with sister Khloé Kardashian and momager Kris Jenner to Italy – ever since, she has been sharing glimpses of their eventful summer in Southern Europe.
The mother-of-two looked relaxed as she spent quiet afternoons enjoying garden picnics, savouring cocktails and making pasta. Posing across the breathtaking countryside, Kylie’s wardrobe for the vacation perfectly aligned with the mood she was going for.
Never caught in an anti-fit silhouette even in her teen years, the otherwise body-con dress-obsessed entrepreneur opted for mom jeans and paired it with a simple frilled white top. Giving her dominatrix fashion aesthetic a rest, Kylie wore dreamy-yet-feminine dresses that looked like she was about to star in a country music video.
In case you missed it, scroll below and swipe right to take a look at Kylie Jenner’s Dolce Vita lifestyle this summer.

Dubai-based Italian jewellery designer’s guide to a La Dolce Vita summer in Capri

    Life

    by Camille Macawili

A high-profile clientele, A-list celebrity customers and the support of prominent industry insiders propelled fine jewellery label Faraone Mennella into the jewelry spotlight.
Drawing design inspiration from classical Italian heritage, award-winning designers Roberto Faraone Mennella and Amedeo Scognamiglio craft tactile, one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces that have been worn by the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, and Charlize Theron, to name a few. Now, with the Amedeo’s recent move to Dubai, he is plotting his next steps for the brand.
Emirates Woman chats with Amedeo Scognamiglio about his beginnings – as well as sharing insider tips and hidden gems and insider tips on how to do Capri like a local.
When was the point you realized you wanted to have your own label and designing jewelry could be your career?
I am the 6th generation of a family dynasty devoted to the craftsmanship of cameos and coral in Italy since 1857 so jewelry is in my DNA. But when I moved to NYC in my early 20s, Manhattan’s art and fashion scene of the 90s started to influence my aesthetics, helping me redefine my design vision. The mix of my Italian classic heritage and the NYC pop culture pushed me to dare and reinvent the design codes I absorbed in my father’s workshop. At that point, I felt empowered to not simply keep running a centuries-old family business, but revolutionise that ancient craft making it cool and current.
Love Lemons 18kt Diamond Earrings Dhs25,155 available at faraonemennella.com
You split your time between New York, London and Capri then recently moved to Dubai – tell us about this.
I split my time between NYC and London while enjoying my summer months in Capri which is home to me and to my 2 brands’ flagship stores. After Covid-19, and the tragic loss of Roberto Faraone Mennella my partner and best friend, I felt like I needed to move somewhere where I could start again and not live with the memories. With the help and guidance of my dear Emirati friends, I moved here last year, and I still pinch myself every day how lucky I am. Dubai, to me now what NYC felt in1998: vibrant, energetic, advanced and exciting.
For those who are new to the brand, what are your hero designs that are driving sales in the Middle East?
Faraone Mennella’s iconic pieces, even after 20 years now, are the ones first seen on Sex & The City back then. Stella Collection, our first design, is now our signature and iconic quintessentially Faraone Mennella collection. Over the years, and thanks to our long collaboration with Carolina Herrera, the fashion queen of NYC, we specialized in couture and bespoke high jewelry collections we only sell in our own boutiques and to private clients.
Abracadabra Earrings Dhs24,815 available at thatconceptstore.com
How did you develop your signature technique?
Although I am lucky to come from a family tradition and was able to ‘’experiment’’ and learn all the different angles of jewellery making from the very early age of 13 years old. When I design, I think of places, gowns, yachts and parties.. where my ladies will want to wear my jewellery.
Roberto Faraone Mennella and Amedeo Scognamiglio
Being an independent label, does that limit what you can do?
The most discerning and sophisticated luxury shoppers are always on the lookout for niche brands offering a product not seen everywhere. Luxury is about dreaming and holding memories of experiences that can’t be replicated. This is what we offer, and the reason why we are able to thrive in a highly competitive market is due to the authenticity and uniqueness we have over the big conglomerates.
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
A few memorable ones are: designing the jewelry for Sex & The City (2002); being included in TIME Style & Design’s 100 most influential designers (2007); Fondazione AltaGamma, Best Jewellery Design award (2020); but above and beyond anything, working with Roberto Faraone Mennella for 20 years, to see our dream of the early days in NYC become a globally recognized luxury brand. Now that I am left alone at the helm, my only reason to work is to prepare our brand’s legacy for the future, in honor of Roberto’s life. Now it’s a luxury brand with a higher purpose.
One thing to look forward to in Capri every summer?
The annual Faraone Mennella ‘’Viva Capri’’ event! It started in 2012 when we opened. We thought it would only be a party for the official opening, but our clients decided it had to be a yearly reunion. And so every year, the first week of July we celebrate jewellery, summer, and friendship with a truly eventful party with dancing and singing, in the most iconic locations of the island.
The best way to spend a lazy summer day in Capri…
Don’t plan, don’t schedule, don’t stress. Enjoy the island, the way the ancient Romans did. La Dolce Vita!
What’s your top tip for travelling to Capri?
No need to stress about expensive private transfers from Napoli – enjoy the 50-minute ride with the commercial hydrofoil lines, they are easy, faster, and more comfortable. From Dubai, FlyDubai has direct flights to Naples airport is better than a private jet and makes my life and commute so easy.
