Justin Bieber’s latest post explains why he cancels upcoming concerts in Dubai

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

While beliebers were gearing up to see Justin Bieber live, the singer’s latest post came as sad news to all his fans.
The singer made an official announcement cancelling his upcoming concerts due to health concerns. He has been in battling Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome for months and after making a public announcement in June 2022, he still decided to go ahead with more shows until now.
Booked to perform on October 8 and 9 at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena for his Justice World Tour, an official statement is yet to be released by the organisers regarding the cancellation of the two shows.

After Bieber’s performance at Rock in Rio last weekend, he experienced severe exhaustion, which led him to cancel his forthcoming concerts that are scheduled to take place later this, also leaving the ‘North America leg’ of the Justice Tour incomplete.
His statement said, “As the result of this illness, I was not able to complete the North America leg of the Justice Tour. After resting end consulting with doctors, family and team, I went to Europe in an effort to continue with the tour.”
“I’m going to be OK, but I need time to rest and get better. I’ve been so proud to bring this show and our message of justice to the world,” he continued.
The singer has been thankful for the support of his fans and ended with “Thank you for your prayers and support throughout all of this! I love you all passionately!”
    What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?

In the video Bieber shared unveiling his condition to his fans, the singer showcased how he wasn’t able to move one side of his face.“As you can see, this eye is not blinking,” Bieber said. “I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move.”
“So, there’s full paralysis on this side of my face. So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just physically, obviously, not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious, as you can see,” he added.
Per the Mayo Clinic, the condition Bieber is suffering from is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is also known to cause chickenpox and shingles.
The virus causes irritation and inflammation of facial nerves, leading to facial palsy and a rash affecting the ear or mouth. The extreme symptoms of this syndrome can include a painful rash inside the ear canal and outside the ear, at times attacking the tongue and roof of the mouth, along with vertigo and tinnitus.

Mirna Trad shares her inspiring story of choosing never to give up

    Lifestyle

    by Team Emirates Woman

IN PARTNERSHIP: Mirna Trad is an individual with an unwavering spirit, determined to succeed.
Despite the obstacles she faced, she has gone on to write two impactful books, using her own life experiences to inspire others.
She’s also set to launch her own skincare brand later this year. In this interview with Emirates Woman, Trad shares the highs and lows of her entrepreneurial journey and how she hopes to help others all around the world.
    Talk us through your career.
My career started at a very young age due to financial issues in my country and family. I started as a waitress at the age of 14 and continued working in the hospitality industry until I graduated from college. I then moved into the corporate world working for hospitals and construction companies and that lead me into a managerial position, but it didn’t fulfil my potential and dreams. However, I was afraid to take the first step, but once COVID-19 started it was a sign that I needed to focus on myself and fulfil my goals. Thus, I decided to make my first dream come true – becoming an author. Due to the lockdown, I wrote my two books in a short period.
The first book, After Midnight, is a biography of my life as a working teenager. The second is Viva, which tells the story of a young woman facing the challenges of following her dreams to success and the problems she faces with her family and society. Currently, I’m deeply committed to two important subjects I’m passionate about female empowerment in the Middle East and animal welfare which still needs a lot of education in this region.
My plan is to organize seminars in the future, be it virtual or live, related to these two subjects. I’m also establishing my skincare brand which will be organic and cruelty-free. The brand is inspired by natural beauty and the resources of the tropical environment in countries such as Thailand and Nepal. The brand, which will be called ‘Everly Ever After’, is also dedicated to women all over the world.
How did your childhood shape your outlook on life and approach to business?
Since I was a teen, I was convinced that I would never achieve anything without a fight as my family’s financial situation wasn’t perfect. I was also working in the hospitality industry, especially in the night scene, in a country that takes advantage of young women that are trying to make their lives better. Thus, these situations shaped me to be a very goal-oriented person that faces any challenge head-on, trying to find the best solution to succeed. Viva is a story of a young woman facing challenges to achieve her goals to be successful and the problems she faces with her family and societal pressures. The young woman comes from a family that struggles with financial hardship. In order to escape this quickly, she marries her husband, but it ends up being an unhappy marriage. It tells the story of her finding her feet, focusing on her dreams, and believing in her potential, leading her to financial stability and independence. The choice is hard, especially for a young woman where main duty in society has been to make others happy; her parents and siblings as a young girl and then her husband and children as an adult, disregarding all her hopes and dreams.
What inspiration do you hope people take from your books?
My mission is to shed light on the issues that all women are facing, especially the taboo subjects that no one is highlighting in the region including depression, addictions, and the effect of “fake” social media. I am to give hope to others by sharing real stories and ideas for a brighter and more successful future for women in our region. I also hope to aim to shed light on the serious issue – one that is close to my heart – of animal cruelty that many humans neglect most of the time. The ideas explored in my books are inspired by my own experiences in life. Unfortunately, no one at the time helped me realise that I am not alone and gave me the strength I needed to continue with my fight to reach my goals, so I hope I can be that inspiration to many.
What is a philosophy that you live by in your professional life?
My philosophy is not to be afraid to live up to your dreams and focus only on your goals. Those who love you will be by your side and toxic individuals may try to disrupt your plans, but they will never succeed. Always trust yourself.

What are your plans for building your own business?
I have started this from a passion of mine which is natural skincare. Going back to our roots in nature, my brand will avoid using chemicals that are bad for our health in the long run. Thus, I started building a connection with suppliers mostly in tropical countries that are the richest when it comes to organic herbs. The brand is also focused on helping women in their communities. We are now focusing on the marketing side of the business, which focuses on the importance of using organic products, which are also cruelty-free. We aim to have our products available online before the end of 2022.

“In my opinion an entrepreneur is one who dares to follow their dreams.”

How has your life impacted the message you hope to share with others?
My rough start as a teenager made me an activist for women’s rights, especially in the Middle East. It led me to write my books to highlight the issues that many women face on a daily basis. On my social media platforms, I also focus on many taboo subjects to show women they are not alone and that they will be able to make it someday. Part of my work is also dedicated- ed to my infinite love of animals since they don’t have a voice to express the injustice they face. These matters led me to base my future company on helping women and making them my suppliers, especially since I had to match it with products that are cruelty-free with no animal testing.
Looking back over your career, can you tell us about three challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first and the biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome was going against society’s rules. I’ve had to free my thoughts and forget the bad situations that I encountered as a teenager. The second is putting my feelings aside when it comes to business. As women, we can be sensitive creatures and to survive in the business world, we must be tough. Finally, the biggest challenge has been to put me first and then help others along the way because as I grow, my help will be more impactful and meaningful.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, what have been the key milestones?
As a writer and through my social media platforms, I have been able to help many women by sharing my experiences. I have received numerous messages sharing their experiences and their thanks. Being able to help people is the biggest milestone.
Do you have any mentors who have helped you throughout your career?
My inspiration has been from the strong women working in different fields. It made me think about myself, focus on becoming the person I have always dreamt of being and forget about the negative thoughts, to learn about my potential and how to develop it.

2022’s third Mercury Retrograde is fast approaching – here’s everything to know

    Lifestyle

    by Team Emirates Woman

Words by Kirstyn Lewis – Founder of the Karmic SoulYou’ve probably just hit your groove. But wait, what? Again? Not another Retrograde? Yes, that’s right. Mercury is once again going into Retrograde on September 11, 2022. However, don’t panic, unless, of course, you don’t like to get things done.
September will be giving us a bigger than usual workload. Don’t be surprised if you start to feel overwhelmed with too many things on your plate.  You can turn this situation into a positive by showcasing your skills, popularity or leadership qualities because it’s going to ultimately favour your career.
Unfortunately, you will need to push through, and the reality will start to bite. It will be too late to catch up later, so make sure you don’t get left behind, or be surprised if you find yourself working longer hours!
This third of the 2022 Mercury Retrogrades asks you to go back over any formalities involving higher education.  Also, cast another eye over any legal documents or contracts relating to foreign places and look closely at upcoming events where you are responsible for someone else’s money.
Do you want to be kicking goals and stay ahead of the pack? Initially, a Retrograding Mercury in Libra is diplomatic in expecting a little more effort, but he is moving back into his home sign of a conscientious Virgo by September 24 where he will be wanting more detail around communication, it may cause some anxiety if you’re not organised.
Your reputation is paramount, so don’t be surprised if you feel your confidence waning or feel like an imposter syndrome is closing in on you and you need to hide your insecurities.
The secret is to write everything down! By the end of October, when Mercury enters Scorpio, he will want to know everything all over again. Help is also there if you ask for it.
The good news is the Full Moon in Pisces on September 10 will be acknowledging how you have been an inspiration to other people and reminding you to say a big thanks to those who helped you along the way.
The stars appear to be preparing you for Sagittarius season because a discriminating and fastidious Venus in Virgo has reminded Mercury that it’s also time to focus on you! Venus wants you to pay more attention to your lifestyle choices and know you can feel, think, and look better than you already do.
Pay attention to any hormonal changes or digestive issues bothering you, luckily Virgo helps you do your homework from September 6. Schedule any aesthetic procedures for the hospital, but don’t operate five days on either side of the Full Moon. Pick a date after 15 September if you can; the New Moon in Libra will be wanting to unveil something beautiful after September 25.
It’s evident 2022 has continued to be a rollercoaster. Those who have done the work and paid attention to our ancient star guidance are seeing results; we often hear well-deserved and long-awaited success stories despite the difficulties.
You’ve become more reliant on yourself, so in this retrograde, just trust the process. With the big five planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto also in retrograde during the entire month of September, put your head down and get on with things.
Don’t forget to back up your wonderfully creative, fluid ideas with critical examples from online media, technology, and communications. You will be wanting to appear intellectually versatile after all.
Mercury Retrograde is here to help put your dreams into action; all the planets are guiding you gently and systematically toward your next chapter. Make sure you let your beauty, brawn and brains shine!

An exclusive interview with Emirati rapper Almas

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

August 28, 2022 marks the seventh annual Emirati Women’s Day to applaud women across different professional career paths.
One such arena in which Emirati women are shattering stereotypes is the music industry. Defying the conventional walls of music, the Emirati singer and rapper, Almas is creating tracks to inspire women with similar interests.
After accomplishing numerous achievements at such a young age such as performing at Expo 2020 at 21 years old, she became the ambassador of Spotify’s Equal Arabia programme this month. This global music forum aims to amplify the work of women creators and encourage fans to discover them from any part of the world.
To celebrate this success, she was even published on a billboard in the heart of New York’s Times Square with her track reaching the global playlist.
“I would like to see more women in the rap scene and I am willing to support them as well,” she tells Emirates Woman. “We are queens and we deserve it.”
By contributing to the UAE’s burgeoning hip-hop movement, Almas has been showcasing her creativity in the music industry through tracks that are receiving international recognition.
With a passion for music since a young age, Emirates Woman spoke to Almas to understand what drives her and inspired her to enter the industry.
What inspired you to become a singer?
I was inspired by my love for music. I have loved music and singing since I was a child and have always had a passion for performing.
You started your career at the age of 15. How has the industry evolved since then?
I have been evolving my music style since I started writing my own music in 2020. I believe that we should not tie ourselves to one thing, we should continue exploring and elevating ourselves.
You performed at Expo 2020 Dubai at just 21 years old. How did that feel?
It was an indescribable feeling. I was nervous but proud of myself at the same time for being able to get to the Expo 2020 stage and sing in front of musical legends such as Hussein AlJasmi, Ahlam and Mohamed Abdo.
Spotify is always championing young women to pursue their dreams. How has this played a key role in finding a space in the music world in your career?
Spotify helped me find myself surrounded by the right people who are always working on themselves. I felt connected to the right network of women creators when I first joined their initiative SAWTIK and now with EQUAL Arabia, I am on Times Square, where a global audience is seeing my face and name.

Equal Arabia under Spotify was born to amplify the work of women creators. How does it feel to be part of such a platform and what do you wish to achieve?
I feel so proud that they chose me to be a part of EQUAL Arabia. It’s an important moment for me, because it’s a reminder that we can achieve anything if we set our minds to it.
You’re a female rapper. How important was it for you to shatter any stereotypes about this?
I am doing something for myself, and I believe that women can do anything they want, not just in the rap scene but beyond.
What advice would you share to young Emirati women aspiring to be a singer?
My advice to her would be to continue doing what she’s doing and work on herself until she finds herself on the right path.
Being a woman in the music industry can be challenging. How did you overcome this?
The struggles are always there but I am always capable of overcoming challenges. You just have to keep going.
Who is your role model in the music industry?
My role model is the band Pink Floyd.
Could you share the story behind your latest song releases?
In my latest track ‘Coffee’, I was singing in many dialects and languages and was speaking about my power in the scene.
With Emirati Women’s Day soon approaching. What changes would you like to see in the music industry for women?
I would like to see more women in the rap scene and I am willing to support them as well. We are queens and we deserve it.

Strengthen your core in the comfort of your home with this online platform

    Lifestyle

    by Amy Sessions

Bryony Deery, Founder of The Platform, takes us through her tips to get beach ready.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like at home and how does this differ on vacation?
During the week I wake up between 5:45-6am, drink a big glass of water and then head downstairs to make my collagen matcha using Enso matcha and Dose & Co Dairy Free collagen. I then take it back up to the bed, I love this me-time. I like to begin my day with a meditation and afterwards, I grab my journal and write my to-do list, my intentions for that day and any thoughts/feelings that come up during my meditation practice. There is something so powerful about early mornings and it’s crucial for me to have an hour to myself before I start my first client at 7am. My routine fits in around the type of vacation I’m on depending on the time difference and whether I have later evenings etc but generally the mornings start in the same way with my mind and body routine followed by a later breakfast. I want to feel my best on holiday and daily movement and mindfulness helps me achieve this. I am less strict on holiday but I like to alternate Pilates with morning walks.
Can you take us through your top de-bloating tips to be beach ready?
For me being beach ready is more of a mindset and feeling confident and comfortable in my own skin. Naturally, if I am doing Pilates and meditating my cortisol levels are reduced and therefore I have less inflammation in my body and tend to feel less bloated. On the days thatI am suffering from bloating I have a video on my app that are my go-tos for debloating, perfect for that time of the month andit really does work! Focusing on my gut health is a daily non-negotiable but drinking lots of water, cutting out excess salt, dry brushing and lymphatic drainage massage are all pre-holiday essentials for me.
Do you exercise each day on vacation and if so when do you carve out time for this?
I naturally like to always stay active whether I am on holiday or at home. I like to do Pilates first thing before breakfast and then tend to do a walk after breakfast and sometimes again at the end of the day. Walking along a beach with a podcast is pure heaven and such a magical way to start the day and boost your mood. We can all find reasons not to find the time but I am disciplined on this and always make sure I invest in myself and my mental and physical health and schedule the time in each day. I love how Pilates is so easy to do anywhere whether you’re in your hotel room, on the beach, or on a balcony.
How long have you been using body gua sha and skin brushing and what effect have you seen from implementing these practices?
I have been body brushing for years! I could talk about the benefits all day long. It helped me with water retention, bloating, detoxing, and skin elasticity and it makes me feel alive before a cold shower in the morning. I love to use my body gua sha to aid in lymphatic drainage and release any buildup there. I do this twice a day and it has become a staple in my bathroom routine.
How often should we be doing this?
Once a day minimum. Every day, no excuses!

What are your go-to products for sun protection as in face, body and hair?

I never put my face in the sun, I wear a huge hat, sunglasses and sit with my face and chest in the shade. I want to avoid sun damage as much as I can. I use Eurcerin oil control SPF 50 on my face and I like Institut esthederm or ultrasun for my body. Pre-holiday I swear by Amanda Harrington fake tan for the body and tan luxe for the face. Buy both now and thank me later.
Are you a light packer or a heavy packer and are there any go-to pieces you always pack for vacation?
I like to pack by outfits so I know I have the right looks for each occasion but then will also add a few extra pieces that I know will go with everything. I always pack a blazer for colder evenings, a comfy but cool pair of trainers that can double up for travel and workouts, oversized shirts that I can wear on the beach over bikinis, Hermes Oran sandals for day-to-night looks and I’m a real fan of maxi skirts as I find them so elegant and flattering with a crop top or bodysuit. My real secret must-have for packing is Muji packing cubes, they are incredibly functional and make unpacking the dream. I am militant when it comes to packing and travel.
Travelling can disrupt our routines. How do you ensure you maintain your habits?
By reminding myself that routine is what makes me feel good and asking myself how I want to feel today. I know that my daily rituals are what makes me feel grounded, at peace and healthy. The book Atomic Habits is one of my favourites and a book I recommend to all of my friends. I really believe that staying consistent with small daily habits amount to a big shift in your day and week!
You recently launched Pilates By Bryony The App – do you find there is a huge demand to work out remotely and what made you take the leap?
Without a doubt. Since COVID-19 there was a big shift in our attitude towards home workouts. People saw that they could achieve results at home, save time and money on gym membership fees, and fit the sessions in around their home life. There has absolutely been an increase in online fitness, I started with 15 people joining my zoom classes and I am now able to connect with people all over the world via the app. I feel so happy and fulfilled knowing that I can reach so many people and help in some way with their mental and physical well-being.

“Drinking lots of water, cutting out excess salt, dry brushing and lymphatic drainage massages are pre-holiday essentials for me.”

What have been the biggest challenges to date and how did you overcome them?
Having a scalable platform for lots of users in- evitably has its challenges but I am a firm believer that there is always a way to figure it out and lessons to learn along the way. I am lucky to have a team of incredibly talented people that have been invaluable to me, especially in the last few months. My meditation practice has changed me as a person and in these stressful times I manage to stay relatively calm and positive and tell myself that there is always a solution. Without meditation, I wouldn’t be able to deal with the stressful situations that building a business can bring so I am very grateful for that.
How have you found social media in terms of supporting brand growth?
It’s almost impossible to build a brand in today’s climate without having a social media presence and it is a key driver for growth in the online fitness industry. It is also a brilliant business tool and allows you to access insights into your audience and speak directly to the consumer. It still blows my mind how quickly a business can grow based on one key share of a story.
How do you approach scaling without compromising on quality?
Scaling a subscription business should never impact quality. I strive to improve the quality as I scale and really listen to my audience. It was harder to deliver quality before launching The Platform because the growth was quicker than I had expected, so I had to figure it out and find a way to grow and develop with demand. I am always read- ing books on startups and businesses as I love to learn.
This is The Summer Escape Issue – where would you like to escape to this summer?
With the nature of the business, it can be difficult to completely switch off and escape but I am hoping to really cut down in August and go to Mykonos. I’d like to spend more time in the sur- rounding Greek islands as they look so beautiful and undiscovered. Last summer I worked non stop so the aim of this summer is to work smarter and have more balance when I am away.

5 inspiring celebrities embracing their vitiligo

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

Proving that vitiligo is no barrier to success, several celebrities have broken the shackles against it.
The condition is caused due to lack of melanin resulting in skin pigment. While some treatments have been developed, there’s no long-term solution.
Affecting approximately 70 million people worldwide, many celebrities are known to have the condition.
However, instead of trying to hide the condition, they proudly embrace it, becoming inspirations for many around the globe.
    Salama Mohammed

One of the most vocal high-profile personalities to embrace her vitiligo is Emirati content creator Salama Mohamed. In a previous interview with Emirates Woman, she admitted it was difficult growing up with the condition. “It was a struggle growing up, when you feel you are different and don’t fit in it is easier to think there is something wrong with you,” she admitted. But today, she embraces her vitiligo “every inch” of her being, and even has the words “Blessed with vitiligo” in her Instagram bio. Through her journey, she was motivated to launch her own skincare brand, Peacefull.
    Winnie Harlow

Winnie Harlow rose to stardom after appearing on America’s Next Top Model in 2014. As a strong advocate for breaking down conventional beauty standards, Harlow has used her platform to raise awareness for skin positivity. Having appeared in campaigns for big labels such as Nike, Victoria’s Secret, Marc Jacobs and more, she has broken the boundaries surrounding vitiligo. The supermodel was diagnosed with this chronic skin condition at the age of four and ever since a young age has been vocal about how this shouldn’t define her.
    Karen Wazen

Content creator and Dubai-based entrepreneur Karen Wazen shared her journey with vitiligo back in June 2021. Opening up about her experience and her diagnosis, the mum-of-three encouraged everyone to accept themselves for who they are. “Accepting ourselves and bodies and differences is the biggest strength we can have, once we are in this state of mind nothing will affect the way we see ourselves,” she said.
    Shahad Salman

Saudi fashion model Shahad Salman is breaking barriers in the modelling industry. The 25-year-old model embraces her vitiligo and continues to be motivated by her ambition to succeed in the industry. Born to challenge stereotypes, the model projects self-confidence in every project she takes on, including her latest role as an ambassador for Pantene.
    Holly Marie Combs

Best known for her role in Pretty Little Liars, Holly Marie Combs has vitiligo, a condition that she has been open about over the years.

WhatsApp is rolling up some big updates – here’s everything you need to know

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

WhatsApp is rolling out more features and some of them are pretty major.
As one of the popular messaging platforms around the globe, security concerns remain of prime importance and the app is continuously enhancing its features to further work on this.
When the announcement was shared by Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, he said, “We’ll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.”
With over two billion users globally, it’s important to be aware of the latest features introduced.
Experience a swift group chat exit
With the numerous group chats increasing over the years, users might want to clear their app of any unused groups. Previously, a notification would be seen for all members of the group, if any user left the chat.
To reduce this attention, the latest feature allows for only the group admin to be aware of this, while the other members remain unaware of this.
Limit your online status to some users
There have been countless occasions when users would have liked to avoid individuals from seeing their online status. With the latest features, the platform allows users to block people on their chat from seeing that they’re online.
    Avoid screenshots for ‘view-once’ messages
After introducing this long-awaited Snapchat-like feature in 2021, users were able to enjoy disappearing messages, allowing the application to advance its privacy settings with ease.
Once a photo or video is opened, it automatically disappears from both the phones after being seen. However, receivers could previously take a screenshot of this. To further enhance security, receivers will not be able to take screenshots of photos or videos sent using the view-once feature and this will be implemented in the near future.
For further details regarding the latest features visit here.
