UAE Eid holidays 2025: Forecast from astronomical community

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

As the UAE prepares for a new year, the astronomical community is already looking to the heavens to predict the exact dates of the nation’s most anticipated breaks — the Eid holidays. Thanks to the UAE Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, we have a general outline of public and private holidays for 2025. However, the precise dates of many of these celebrations depend on lunar phases, which can vary slightly from year to year.

The Islamic calendar, which governs many of the UAE’s religious holidays, is based on the lunar cycle. This means that the dates of events like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha can shift relative to the Gregorian calendar. The Moon Sighting Committee plays a crucial role in determining the exact start date of these holidays by visually confirming the appearance of the new moon.

Based on astronomical predictions, the UAE can expect a year filled with long weekends. Eid al-Fitr is likely to fall between Monday, March 31, and Wednesday, April 2. Additionally, Arafat Day is anticipated to occur on Friday, May 30, leading to Eid al-Adha celebrations from Saturday, May 31, to Wednesday, June 2.

Beyond the major religious festivals, the UAE will also observe several other significant holidays in 2025. These include:
Gregorian New Year: A one-day holiday on January 1.
Islamic New Year: Falling on Muharram 1, the Gregorian date of which will be confirmed closer to the event.
Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday: Celebrated on Rabi Al Awwal 12, with the Gregorian date to be determined.
Commemoration Day and UAE Union Day: Honored on December 2 and 3, respectively.

The Emirates Astronomy Society has played a pivotal role in predicting these holiday dates. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors, has stated that the crescent moon of Ramadan 1446 AH will be born on Friday, February 28, 2025. This means that Ramadan itself is likely to begin on Saturday, March 1.

As the UAE prepares for a year filled with cultural and religious celebrations, the astronomical community will continue to monitor the lunar cycle and provide accurate predictions for the nation’s holiday calendar. With a combination of traditional knowledge and modern science, the UAE can anticipate a year of festivities marked by both spiritual significance and astronomical wonder.

Eid Al-Adha gift guide 2024: 30 fashion, beauty and lifestyle items to shop

    Fashion

    by Ruman Baig

Eid al-Adha 2024 is just around the corner – if you were looking for an occasion to pamper your loved ones, this is it.
Eid as a festival brings families, friends and communities together. It is that period during the year where you don’t worry about deadlines, daily chores or even mull in the existential crisis that engulfs every adult.
As a kid, I always looked forward to Eid al-Adha, because it the time when my entire extended family came together for lunches, dinners, barbecues and (my favourtie) gifts exchanging ceremonies. Everyone excitedly waited for their envelope of cash ‘eidi’ from the elders and a gift that was specifically picked according to their taste.
As a grown up, this memory and tradition has remained in my home and we continue to spoil our loved ones with something that has either been on their wishlist or with an item we think they would love.
Whether it’s a new bag for your mom, perfume for your dad, vintage tea set for your grandma, candle for your aunt or the latest espresso maker for your coffee aficionado cousin – the possibilities are endless.
But if you’re like me and you happen to procrastinate until the very end when it comes to buying gifts, let this Emirates Woman guide be your ultimate saviour.
Under this EW Eid Al-Adha 2024 guide, we’ve listed luxury items under the categories of fashion, beauty and lifestyle for you to pick from.
To make the process even simpler (thank us later), you click on the picture of the product you like, and it will redirect you to the website where you can shop it from.

Citizens and residents will observe a day off for Arafah Day on June 15, followed by a three-day break for Eid Al Adha from June 16 to June 18. This extended holiday offers an opportunity for families to come together, perform religious rituals, and engage in communal celebrations.
    Commencement of Dhul Hijjah
The sighting of the crescent Moon on Thursday, June 6, signified the end of Dhul Qa’adah and the beginning of Dhul Hijjah on Friday, June 7. Dhul Hijjah holds immense importance for Muslims, being the month of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, and the celebration of Eid Al Adha.
Significance of Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha
Arafah Day, which is the pinnacle of the Hajj pilgrimage, will be observed on Saturday, June 15. This day is revered as the holiest in Islam, where pilgrims gather on the plains of Arafat to perform prayers and seek forgiveness. For Muslims not on pilgrimage, it is a day of fasting and reflection.
Following Arafah Day, Eid Al Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” will be celebrated on Sunday, June 16. This festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. The act of Qurbani (sacrifice) is performed, where livestock is slaughtered, and the meat is distributed among family, friends, and the needy.
