TikTok’s Kinda Ibrahim on amplifying women and utilising the platform’s impact

    Life

    by Camille Macawili

Kinda Ibrahim, Regional General Manager of Operations and Marketing at TikTok, speaks to Emirates Woman passionately about the platform’s significance, her vision for the platform in the region, and her approach to amplifying strong women.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine?
I am an early riser. I am usually up by 6:00 am. My morning starts with a quick coffee, then doing some form of exercise (it varies). I then come back home to have breakfast, read and watch the news, and start my work day.
Tell us how did you get your start in the industry.
I kind of knew early on that I wanted to get into tech. My undergraduate degree was in computer science, and the first few roles I took were in programming and development. I slowly transitioned into business while I was completing my MBA but I stayed very close to tech. I held roles in analytics, project management, business operations, and partnerships in tech companies in North America and Middle East, such as Yahoo, Microsoft, Twitter and most recently, TikTok.
What is your approach to leadership and how do you ensure these values filter down through the company?
My leadership style has evolved over the years as I  have been managing teams for almost 15 years. My role as a leader is essentially to remove obstacles and help my team succeed and I  best describe it as a combination of coaching and democratic style.
How have you found social media has supported your own personal growth?
Discovery and #LearnOnTikTok have allowed me to easily gain insightful information and learn new things, while also expanding my horizons into topics I didn’t even know I was interested in! From learning quick tricks in Excel sheets to understanding human psychology, to quick baking recipes and breathing techniques and the list goes on and on!

How do you see TikTok and the use of social media evolve in the next 5 to 10 years?
With the world constantly changing and the rapid evolution of technology, it’s hard to say how digital platforms and social media will evolve in the coming years.
I know for sure that we’ll continue to showcase how TikTok is redefining entertainment by harnessing the power of a diverse and authentic community. It’s a platform where culture thrives, connecting people from different experiences, cultures, and communities.
TikTok fuels discovery and empowers creators worldwide, providing a space for creative expression. What sets TikTok apart is its ability to entertain while fostering a rewarding sense of community. Through its innovative approach, it has transformed the way people experience and engage with entertainment in a truly global and inclusive manner, and I believe this will only continue to go from strength to strength.
Something I’m very excited about is the launch of Series, which we just announced, an extension of our continued commitment to providing a range of monetization opportunities that reflect the diversity of our global creator community. The feature is currently in its early phase and only available to select creators in select regions including MENA and we’ll be listening closely to our community for feedback to iterate and further enhance the feature and make it available more widely to more creators in the coming months.
How do you aim to drive the platform forward in the region?
One of the most important things for me at TikTok is our community, it’s truly at the heart of everything we do. Myself and the team are keen to constantly provide them with opportunities to amplify their voices and enable them to be a positive force of change in society. We are a platform that nurtures creative, authentic, and positive content communities which are diverse in age, culture, and geography, and allow everyone to have a voice.
We also have a robust localization strategy to encourage users to create content relevant to their local cultures and trends. Our operations teams ensure TikTok provides the best community support for creativity and discovery for our local users in Arabic, and we will continue to do so.
How do you drive women empowerment in your field?
We have initiatives to help empower women. For example, in celebration of International Women’s Day earlier this year, we showcased the inspiring and remarkable #WomenofTikTok community in an exhibition at Al Serkal’s Le Guepard digital gallery, allowing visitors to join in celebrating the amazing Women Who Will who continue to make a positive impact on the global TikTok community and beyond through their creativity, passion, and advocacy.
We also have the #WomenofTikTok community, which has garnered over 3 billion views globally, and brings together a diverse group of women changemakers, pioneers, leaders, and allies who are using their voices to break barriers, gender stereotypes and advance women’s equity every day.  From popular hashtags such as #WomeninSTEM (over 3 billion views) and #WomeninSports (over 1 billion views), to women entrepreneurs and small business owners who use TikTok to start and grow a business, to women activists dedicated to enhancing women empowerment and gender equality, #WomenofTikTok are supporting and connecting with one another.
What are the different verticals that are generating views from the region – and how can we use it #IRL?
Some of the most popular verticals in the region include #BookTok which has amassed over 2 billion views in the region over the last 6 months, where users share reviews and recommendations of their favorite books; #WhereToVisit which has had 541 million video views in the last 6 months, which acts as personalised city tour guide from the TikTok community; #WhatToWatch an entertainment hub featuring recommendations, reviews and their reactions on the top movies and series from our community and leading streaming platforms; #TikTokCookbook for our at-home chefs.
With social media use at an all-time high, what type of content stands out to you?
For me, content that really stands out is authentic content. The TikTok community has created a new global language around video and sound, not just text, but by sharing authentic stories, thoughts, and experiences with each other. The creativity and authenticity that lives on TikTok cannot be replicated or found anywhere else.
Have you had any mentors along the way and if so, what knowledge did they impart?
I have been very lucky to have many mentors along the way and I owe a lot of the success that I have to them. From pushing my limits that I did not know I had, to coaching me on topics such as communications, leadership, building alliances and stakeholder management — they have had a huge impact on my career. It is my time now to pay it forward and help people succeed and achieve their career objectives.

How I got my job as co-founders… of this interior design talent haven in Dubai

Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.
NACRE Living Interiors was founded by well-known industry names, Margarita Salionova and Surat Dzhelilova. The founders make for an exciting and influential example of interior design talent, with the launch of their first Dubai location now open on promenade level in Aurora Tower, Dubai Marina.
In the beginning they started to work on fit outs for commercial spaces and luxury hotels and residential developments, an area of the business they will grow over the coming years.
Some of the ultra-premium brands to be found in the stunning NACRE showroom space include Longhi, Raynaud, Ercuis, CTO Lighting, Vaughan Designs, Bella Figura, Giobagnara, Pinetti, Dedar, Sahrai and Alivar,To understand more, Emirates Woman sat down with these entrepreneurs to find out more about her journey and what led her to launch her own beauty brand.
What was your favourite subject at school?
SD: Mine was geography because I got excellent marks – the teacher loved me for my beautiful eyes.MS: Probably like everyone else at school, and unrelated to my choice of career, my favourite subject was physical education.
    What was your first job?
MS: I worked as an accountant at my father’s place of work. Again, pretty unrelated to my current line of entrepreneurial work – there’s a pattern here. That said, practice in accounting gave me a good foundation for understanding the importance of budgeting which is crucial for any successful entrepreneur.SD: I went to medical school, so my first job once I left university was an assistant plastic surgeon. It was a really high pressure and a role that was full of responsibility, but ultimately medicine turned out not to be my true passion point.
    What brought you to Dubai?
SD: I wanted to move to Dubai for a long time before I made the change, as I just didn’t know where to begin. The sanctions in relation to my field probably worked as a catalyst for relocation, but I wouldn’t dream of changing it. Dubai is an incredible city.
MD: The gap in the market for what we offer, as I don’t think there are many offerings that are comparable to NACRE, and I believe we are meeting a unique demand in the market. But also, on a more personal level, residents and professionals in Dubai are known to create and inspire beauty, and I am excited to now be able to call Dubai home and become a part of it all within the interior design space.
What inspired you to enter the interiors space?
MS: From a really young age, probably around fourteen, I had a burning desire to do what I do today. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset, so this combined with a love for the home and interiors, really was a driving force from the outset. Throughout study at university I found myself, probably at the irritation of others, having a say in both my own living accommodation space and those of friends!
SD: For me, food tastes better on a pretty plate, and I sleep more soundly in a beautiful bed. Even if throughout the day, things don’t quite go to plan, having a comforting and inspiring home to return to that is your own space makes all the difference. I went into interiors to change people’s lives and to bring residents happiness.

Talk us through the concept of NACRE?
MS: The NACRE project is a one-of-a-kind platform in the UAE that allows clientele to create a fully fledged harmonious interior and exterior of the home. At NACRE you can find vintage, designer and exclusive tableware, furniture, textiles, home accessories, modern art, and much more.
SD: NACRE is a place where we want to create history – not only do we sell art, furniture and interior items, we sell emotions and nostalgia. I want every moment and memory associated with us to be remembered with a smile. It’s important for Margo and I to maintain good relations with our clients; I can’t believe we’ve only been open one month, and we are already so lucky to have a family that is made up of our amazing team, incredible clients, partners and friends who strongly support us. I have been in the sector for four years now, and all of my close friends today started as my clients. One of them helped me to choose a clinic for the birth of my daughter, another gave me my baby’s first stroller – there have been many moments like this that I still cherish.
What are the key elements of your role?
MS: I take the lead in more of the design element than Surat, the organisational role has fallen onto her shoulders! But in general, our roles intersect, no day is the same and we try to mutually distribute responsibilities.SD: I’m more of the organiser, and I’m a strict director at that. Margarita is lead in design. We learn from each other every day.
Talk us through your daily routine.
SD: I wake up early in the morning and I commit to intense sports of some kind. Next, I open my diary and look at my endless to-do list, and I follow it rigidly to ensure I meet every deadline. I spend time with my daughter, we play and we go together to nursery. Every day brings something new to our world, and we are never bored.
MS: Every day is challenging, but interesting. I have a young son which I brought into the world at the age of 24, so I have to combine the role of a woman who works (hard) and the role of mother and wife. Each member of my family has their own daily routine. In the morning everyone goes off to work, and in the evening we meet for dinner, we share conversations, or go an evening walk along Dubai’s beautiful marina. I spend pretty much every weekend with family and friends.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
SD : Always look ahead. Listen and hear yourself, sometimes it’s your inner voice trying to speak to you. Allow yourself to take risks If you really want it, you will achieve it.
MS: Live for the smaller moments to be found in the everyday, be present and feel and experience all human emotions – embrace the positive with the not so positive. It’s all part of life’s rich tapestry. We all seek perfection, but I believe that if we embrace change we can determine our individual destiny. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, but we can change the future by living in the moment and by chasing our dreams. Dubai is the perfect city to give yourself a try.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?
MS: The best advice I received is to support my family and to keep the faith in my own abilities. No one has lived in your shoes or has had the exact same life experiences, and therefore only you can advise what is best for you and your unit.
SD: When you reach a new peak, dont be afraid to be at the bottom of the next path.
    And what is the worst?
MS: It’s not so much advice but more the line of thinking that keeps you playing it safe. Living in fear and taking no risks in life will guarantee you fail by default, because you put your happiness at risk, so you may as well go for it, someone has to!
    SD: Don’t take that risk!
What’s the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?
MS: Launching in Dubai; it was thoroughly challenging due to tight deadlines ahead of opening. I’d imagine the entire editorial space of Emirates Woman wouldn’t be enough to give a summary of the series of events that were endured. That said, we made it, we kept plugging away and we are super proud of where we are today. We hope to see more great success to come, now we are through the toughest phase.SD: Finishing the renovation in our Dubai Marina showroom, which lasted 7 months rather than 2 months.
What’s your future plans for the brand?
MS: Our plans are grandiose. We have a strong desire to work with some of Dubai’s largest hotel groups, the best interior designers, and of course private residential spaces as well as real estate developers. Watch this space.
SD: We have big plans. God laughs at us when we talk about our plans, so I always try to do everything in silence.

    VIEW GALLERY/ 7 IMAGES
Fashion designer Kristina Fidelskaya talks to Emirates Woman about her office space in Dubai Design District and how it reflects their brand.
Tap the gallery above for an exclusive tour inside.
How long have you been in this space?
We have been in this office since d3 Dubai Design District opened seven years ago. As it was a project of a new area combining fashion and design, we knew we would be surrounded by creativity and inspiring people.
Have you custom-built any bespoke pieces?
We created our office and showroom from scratch, working closely with interior designers in order to infuse our brand DNA and to bring my vision to life from the concrete walls to the installation made of glossy steel to display our new collections. For the furniture, I like to play with the home lines from other fashion houses.
How do you think the interior buys reflect you and your brand?
I wanted a space that matches the vibe of my own house as well as our store in Dubai. Soft, peaceful, clean, and cosy, spending time here should feel like home to be comfortable and leave room for creativity. Most of our interior buys being customized and made-to-measure goes along with the DNA and values of our atelier and brand.
Describe your taste in three words.
    Elegant, pure, and peaceful.

7 of Sheikha Latifa’s most impactful quotes about Dubai

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

As Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and member of the Dubai Council celebrates her birthday this month, we look at the most meaningful quotes she has shared with the UAE.
Besides being a role model to many, she constantly aspires to build an environment that’s conducive to empowering women and uplifting Dubai’s creative arts scene.
To mark this special occasion, Emirates Woman digs through the archives to bring to light some of Sheikha Latifa’s most profound quotes about Dubai, women empowerment, collaboration and more.
On moving towards a creative economy

This month Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, attended the first ever graduation ceremony of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) which was held at Dubai’s Museum of the Future.
As graduates completed the region’s first integrated bachelor’s degree in Design, Sheikha Latifa said “The graduation of the first Bachelors of Design class from DIDI represents another milestone in our progress toward a new vibrant creative economy.”
“DIDI, the first multidisciplinary design programme in the Middle East of its kind, is one of the many pioneering programmes that encapsulate Dubai’s forward-looking spirit. For us to achieve our ambition for Dubai’s creative economy, we need to make sure the infrastructure and the right programmes and institutions are in place for future and current creatives to develop, grow and flourish,” she highlighted at the ceremony.
On Dubai becoming a growing hub for knowledge enthusiasts

At the inauguration of the Big Bad Wolf Books exhibition held between April 14 to 24, 2022, Sheikha Latifa toured the event and shared her positive feedback. With over 190 nationalities present across all fields including scientific, literary and humanitarian, this exhibition was launched to promote the concept of exchanging information.
During the event, she said, “A strong culture of reading enables members of society to make significant contributions to the development of the Arab region and the advancement of their countries, in addition to driving creativity and innovation in various fields.”
    On collaboration
With a major focus on enhancing the emirate’s cultural ecosystem, Sheikha Latifa has always laid emphasis on exploring different forms of collaboration.
“Collaboration is integral to building a thriving creative and cultural sector,” she said during the World Conference on Creative Economy 2021 (WCCE) last year.
She highlighted how Dubai Culture actively focuses on sustainable initiatives that make it a game-changer in the region. Through new collaborations, Dubai Culture is becoming a leading centre for blending artistic, educational and technological activities in the city.
    On the thriving artistic scene

As global and regional talent continues to be at the helm of Dubai’s burgeoning art scene, Sheikha Latifa shared how Dubai Culture continues to nurture and grow this sector on a daily basis.
“Everything I do within the Culture and Arts Authority is geared towards supporting the industry, is geared towards taking our creatives to a global stage, where they can be recognised internationally,” she told CNN in a previous interview.
“A thriving cultural scene is actually a sign of a very stable country, a thriving country, a stable government.”
On turning a vision into reality
Dubai culture officially launched on March 8, 2008, under the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Showcasing the growth of the initiative, Sheikha Latifa launched ‘Dubai’s Culture & Heritage’ project on Google Arts & Culture, which she outlined was thanks to the innovation and foresight of her father.
“Thanks to the vision and guidance of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai now holds a distinguished position on the global creative map,” she said. “We are proud that the city has truly become a global centre for arts, culture and creativity, a place where we empower and enable our home-grown talents, and welcome creatives from all over the world, offering them a home where they can thrive on a professional and personal level.”
    On praising the future generations
As the Dubai arts and culture scene continues to flourish and grow, there’s a continuous stream of emerging talent and it’s something Her Highness is championing with the Global Grad Show, of which Dubai Culture is a strategic partner.
With the launch of the event last year, Sheikha Latifa said: “Through the efforts of the thousands of brilliant young minds who engage with the program every year, a better future is being shaped, and enabling their growth means creating a more prosperous society for everyone. From Dubai we can all contribute to a better future.”
    On female empowerment

Sheikha Latifa is consistently empowering women here in the UAE and across the globe, and it’s something she continues to highlight. Back in 2020 at the Global Forum Dubai, Her Highness emphasised the importance of supporting women.
“It’s important to support women in whatever they want to do,” she said. “I believe the support of the government is crucial in driving women forward. I see women continuing to go from strength to strength.”
As she continues to foster her role at Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, she’s constantly vouching for women to achieve great things and to receive more opportunities in the country to flourish.
