Strong Gains – The Summer Escape Issue cover story with Mike Thurston, Founder of THRST

Fitness entrepreneur and WHOOP brand ambassador Mike Thurston discusses discipline, scaling a business, and setting goals with integrity.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine, and are there non-negotiable practices you do daily?
I enjoy slow, relaxing mornings. Alarm clocks don’t exist in my world – unless I absolutely need to be up early (and for me, anything before 8 AM is early). The first 30 minutes of my day are usually the same, no matter where I am. I drink a glass of water, make myself a coffee, take in the view, and then sit down to map out a plan of attack for the day. What happens after that depends entirely on my schedule. My non-negotiables are getting in 10,000 steps and at least one hour of physical activity each day. If it’s a training day (which it is five days out of the week), that means resistance training at the gym. On rest days, I’ll do some form of active recovery – usually stretching or a long walk.

What was the catalyst to launch your brand? Was the goal always to start something of your own?
Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to be my own boss and have a business of my own. For years, the biggest challenge was figuring out exactly what that business would be. After graduating from university in 2011, I bounced from one job to another until I discovered my true passion: fitness. In 2016, I uploaded my first YouTube video, and it wasn’t long before I began building a strong online following. After working with numerous brands in the fitness space, I became more motivated than ever to create my own thing. Rather than continuing to pour my energy into growing other brands, I wanted to invest that effort into building something of my own. As my online community and personal brand continued to grow, I was able to step away from personal training and launch a fitness app. I poured over a decade of experience and knowledge into it, essentially giving people access to me as their personal coach, but at a fraction of the cost and on their device at all times. After the app launched, I no longer needed to rely on one-on-one coaching. With that freedom, I leaned into my passion for travel and new experiences. I began vlogging my trips, sharing them with the world, and gradually transitioned into more of a lifestyle brand, instead of just fitness. From that momentum, I launched THRST Clothing – designed for men who want comfortable, stylish pieces for travel to warm destinations. It was a natural next step, blending my love for fitness, fashion, and exploration into one brand.
You are driven by an entrepreneurial mindset, having multiple businesses. What are the core values that define your ventures, and how do you approach things differently?
I’m driven by an entrepreneurial mindset that’s all about enjoyment, integrity, and impact. When I start a business or enter a partnership, it has to align with who I am, what excites me, and how I want to live my life. I only take on things that genuinely excite me – stuff I’d happily do even if I wasn’t getting paid. I like to bring fun, creativity, and my own personal style into everything I create, which makes the process feel less like work and more like a passion project. I’m not building a business to feel tied down – I’m building it to create freedom: financially, creatively, and with my time. That freedom is what gives me the space to live fully, travel, and keep growing. Integrity is at the heart of everything I do. For me, it’s about doing what’s right, not just what’s easy or profitable. I’ve built a community, and I see it as my responsibility to serve them with honesty and respect, not just look for ways to cash in. I want to look back at what I’ve built and feel proud, knowing I stayed true to my values and never took advantage of the people who support me. At the end of the day, every project I take on needs to have a deeper purpose. Whether it’s helping someone get in shape, feel more confident, or take control of their life, I want my work to make a difference.

“Consistency isn’t about being perfect – it’s about showing up, staying intentional, and doing the work whether you feel like it or not.”

As a fitness coach and entrepreneur, where do you get the motivation to stay consistent, and what are the practices that support this?
As a fitness coach and entrepreneur juggling multiple businesses, I know motivation to stay in the best shape will come and go. What keeps me consistent is discipline, routine, and a clear sense of purpose. I build habits that support my goals and create a structure that keeps me focused, even on the tough days. My passion for what I do fuels me, but it’s the systems I’ve put in place – like non-negotiable training sessions, optimising my sleep and nutrition intake, along with surrounding myself with people who challenge me – that keep me showing up day after day. I also always tie everything back to my “why”. Whether it’s helping someone regain confidence or building a business that grants me freedom, that bigger vision keeps me moving forward – even when motivation fades. Consistency isn’t about being perfect – it’s about showing up, staying intentional, and doing the work whether you feel like it or not. Don’t get me wrong, I have my fair share of bad days, but thankfully, it’s got to the point now where they don’t happen too often, and if they do, they’re usually followed by a lot of really good days.
In terms of fitness, how do you measure “optimal performance”?
What are the key metrics you check to define this? For me, “optimal performance” isn’t just about how much you lift or how fast you run – it’s a balance of physical capability, recovery, mental clarity, and overall well-being. It’s about how well your body performs in relation to your goals, lifestyle, and longevity. Some of the key metrics I look at include:
    1. Strength & Endurance Progression – Are you consistently getting stronger, faster, or more efficient in your training? This shows adaptation and growth (metrics you can track inside my app).
    2. Recovery Markers – Quality of sleep, heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, and how quickly the body bounces back after intense sessions. Recovery is a huge part of performance, and the data from Whoop helps me to plan my sleep and recovery days.
    3. Mobility & Movement Quality – Can you move well without pain or restriction? Optimal performance includes freedom of movement, injury prevention, and being able to walk without looking like you’re doing a permanent lat spread.
    4. Body Composition – While not the only measure, tracking lean muscle mass, fat percentage, and weight can give insight into how training and nutrition are impacting the body.
    5. Energy Levels & Mental Focus – If you’re constantly fatigued, unmotivated, or mentally foggy, that’s a sign something’s off – even if your numbers look good.
    6. Consistency & Adaptability – Can you sustain your performance over time, and can your body handle new challenges? Sustainability is key to long-term performance. Ultimately, optimal performance is personal. It’s not about chasing perfection – it’s about aligning your physical output with your goals while maintaining health, balance, and mental sharpness.

How is your app, THRST, changing the fitness game? What sets it apart from other fitness apps, and what are the benefits?
The THRST app is designed to cut through the noise and deliver straightforward, effective programming to help you achieve real results and hold you accountable. It focuses on body recomposition – building muscle while losing body fat – and offers a user-friendly platform that combines expert training guidance, nutrition tracking, and education all in one place. With a clean, intuitive interface, the app makes it easy to log your workouts and track detailed metrics like sets, reps, and weights. Each program is fully customisable to suit your schedule, equipment access, and personal goals. You also get access to a Comprehensive Exercise Library, complete with instructional videos to support proper technique, add variety, and build confidence in your training. Unlike many other apps on the market, everything inside of THRST has been carefully designed, written, and filmed by me, with no third-party involvement. It’s exactly how I train myself and how I trained my clients to deliver real, long-term results.
As a WHOOP brand ambassador, what have you learned about yourself in your own fitness journey?
One of the biggest takeaways has been understanding the importance of recovery and sleep. I used to train with an intensity-first mindset, but WHOOP has taught me to be just as focused on how I sleep, how I recover, and how my body responds to strain. It’s made my training smarter, not just harder. I’ve learned to listen to my body more, and the data backs up what intuition sometimes misses. The all-new WHOOP 5.0 delivers medical-grade features such as the Heart Screener and WHOOP Age. What metrics do you look at that support your health and longevity goals? Heart rate variability (HRV) and sleep consistency are two things I pay close attention to. HRV gives me insight into my overall resilience and stress levels, while tracking sleep and recovery metrics keeps me disciplined with my routines. The WHOOP Age feature is also a brilliant benchmark – it challenges me to live in a way that biologically keeps me younger than the calendar says.
Wearable tech has been one of the biggest game-changing shifts in the wellness landscape. How has this changed the way you approach your own goals, personally and professionally?
It’s shifted me from reactive to proactive. I used to assess how I felt and adjust from there. Now, I wake up with clear, objective data that helps me plan my day, from when I train to how intensely I push. Professionally, it’s helped me lead by example – I’m not just talking about performance and wellness; I’m measuring it, sharing it, and improving it in real time. What’s been the key for you in building that authentic community around the projects you’ve worked on? Authenticity and consistency. I don’t try to be someone I’m not, and I’m transparent about my journey – the wins, the challenges, and the lessons. I think people connect with realness, and I’ve made a conscious effort to give value to everything I put out. Whether it’s content, coaching, or a business venture, I ask myself: “Does this genuinely help people?” That’s what keeps people coming back.

To you, what does it take in the current market landscape to succeed, and what has been the best tool that has helped you lead a life focused on positivity?
To succeed now, you need clarity, adaptability, and discipline. The digital space is constantly evolving, so you’ve got to stay grounded in your purpose while being open to new ideas. For me, structure is the tool – having routines, setting goals, and staying physically active. Fitness gives me the mental clarity and confidence to handle whatever life throws my way. WHOOP is part of that structure – it keeps me dialed in and accountable, every single day.

“With advancements in AI and biometric tracking, my app will evolve in real time based on each user’s performance, recovery, and sleep, pushing the shift toward smarter, more effective training.”

What role do you see the brand playing in the future of fitness, and how do you hope to innovate in the industry?
Fitness apps are shaping the future of health by making training more accessible, personalised, and data-driven. With just a smartphone, anyone can tap into workouts, coaching, and nutrition plans – anytime, anywhere – eliminating the need for rigid gym schedules or in-person sessions. I want my brand to be a major part of that movement. With advancements in AI and biometric tracking, my app will evolve in real time based on each user’s performance, recovery, and sleep, pushing the shift toward smarter, more effective training. Features like leaderboards and challenges will bring a sense of community and accountability, helping users stay consistent and motivated. Through the community I’ve built on social media and within the app, my goal is to simplify the process of getting in shape, while making it fun, engaging, and accessible for everyone.

“It’s not about doing more – it’s about doing what matters most, consistently. Progress doesn’t require hours a day, just a smart, focused approach that fits your lifestyle.”

For those who are time-poor and looking to shape up, what can we still do in terms of fitness to achieve this?
Being short on time doesn’t mean you can’t make progress. With the right strategy, even the busiest people can build muscle, burn fat, and stay in shape. I’m busier than ever, yet I still manage to maintain my physique without spending endless hours in the gym or starving myself, eating the same boring meals every day. It all comes down to maximising convenience and optimising the workouts. Training just three to four times a week with real intent can deliver solid results. Follow a programme, lift heavy, master execution, and improve week on week. If you don’t like to lift weights, go and find another activity that you enjoy getting stuck into. Outside of the gym, I try to move my body and walk as much as possible. If you can’t get outside and walk, get a treadmill at home and make it a priority to walk on it at least 30 minutes per day. Nutrition plays an even bigger role when your training time is limited. For years, I would food shop and prepare all of my meals, tracking each calorie meticulously. Life doesn’t need to be like that. To save time, I get all my meals delivered to my house. I keep it simple: high protein meals, unprocessed and nutrient-dense foods, staying hydrated, and avoiding mindless snacking. In fact, remove all snacks and temptation from your house. Will power alone will only get you so far. Tech also helps streamline everything. Fitness apps such as THRST make it easy to plan, track, and stay consistent without needing to think too much about what to do next. Regular blood testing with Bioniq ensures that my customised supplements are exactly what my body needs to tackle deficiencies and improve my overall health and wellbeing. And lastly, I don’t overlook recovery. Prioritising sleep, getting in some movement during rest days, and managing stress all help boost results and keep energy levels high. At the end of the day, it’s not about doing more – it’s about doing what matters most, consistently. Progress doesn’t require hours a day, just a smart, focused approach that fits your lifestyle.
Have you had any mentors along the way, and if so, what knowledge did they impart?
I haven’t worked with any mentors directly, but thanks to my podcast and the ever-growing network of entrepreneurs and successful individuals in my circle, I’m thankful to be surrounded by so many people whom I see as mentors. Before having a strong network, the early days in my career were quite lonely, so I would rely on audiobooks and podcasts to absorb all the wisdom I could, helping to guide me on my journey.
What advice do you wish you had received at the beginning of your journey to success?
Just do the thing. Far too often, I’ve found myself hesitating, overthinking, or procrastinating when instead, I should have just done the task, which deep down I know needed to be done. Doing the thing is about cutting through the noise of excuses, doubts, or the need for everything to be perfect, and simply getting started. Often, the hardest part of any task is taking that first step. Whether it’s going to tackle an uncomfortable conversation, we tend to build it up in our heads until it feels overwhelming. “Just do the thing” is a mindset shift – it encourages action over analysis, progress over perfection. This approach also builds momentum. Once you start, even in a small way, the task usually becomes easier. Action creates clarity and confidence. It breaks the cycle of delay and puts you in motion, which is often all you need to follow through. At its core, “just do the thing” is about discipline, focus, and trust – trust that taking action, even imperfectly, is more productive than waiting for the “right” moment. It’s a phrase that simplifies the process: stop stalling, start doing.
This is The Summer Escape Issue – where will you be escaping to this summer?
Instead of escapes, I like to see them as business trips, where I can create and collaborate in some way, shape, or form. I don’t like to switch off for too long, I find it hard to get the rhythm back. In June, I’ll be starting with Lagos and Lisbon in Portugal, followed by London, Marbella, Ibiza, and Barcelona. In July, I hope to tick off part 2 of my America tour, visiting LA and Las Vegas this time around, interviewing guests for my podcast First Things THRST. No solid plans for August or September yet, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be visiting some places I’ve never been to before. Whether I’m with my team or travelling alone, there will be a camera with me, and I’ll be documenting the experiences for my audience.

Founder and CEO of AHS Properties on setting new benchmarks in luxury real estate

    Emirates Man

    by Camille Macawili

Founder and CEO of AHS Properties and Board Member at DAMAC, Abbas Sajwani, sets new benchmarks in shaping the real estate market in the region.
Armed with a forward-thinking vision and lessons learned, the Emirati entrepreneur propels innovation and luxury to offer an unparalleled living experience for the next generation.
Tell us about your approach to leadership. How do you approach it and ensure these values filter down through the company?
Leadership isn’t just a title, it’s a mindset and a way of life. My understanding of leadership began at a young age, working alongside my father Hussain Sajwani and observing his meticulous approach to managing every detail. This early exposure taught me the importance of involvement and attention to detail. In my daily routine, I stay actively engaged with my team, overseeing processes, and following up on tasks. I believe in open communication and often brainstorm ideas with my team, valuing their input and opinions. By encouraging everyone to leverage their strengths and perform at their best, we can achieve remarkable results. Mistakes are a part of the learning process, and I emphasise the importance of learning from them and making the right choices moving forward.

Innovation and luxury are signatures of AHS Properties. How did you define this – was this your vision from the outset?
Luxury is not for everyone; it’s a distinct niche in real estate that represents a lifestyle. From the outset, my vision for AHS Properties was rooted in a passion for luxury properties. For me, luxury is more than just buying a property; it’s about creating an exceptional living experience. Before starting AHS Properties, I have always been intrigued about the ideal locations, as the site is the cornerstone of any luxury project. The exterior and interior design, amenities, and features – every detail matters in a luxury property. We aim to create a life experience, not just a property. Whenever we start a new project at AHS, I put myself in the client’s shoes to understand their needs and dreams for their home. A home should be for a lifetime, and thus, luxury must embody a unique lifestyle.

Have you seen investor mindset change in the luxury real estate space since you founded AHS Properties in 2021?
Absolutely. Initially, clients were often focused on larger spaces, especially end users. However, the mindset has changed. Now, clients prioritise having everything they need within their units to minimise the need to go out. This includes amenities like indoor and outdoor pools, spas, cinema rooms, offices, and more expansive living spaces. At AHS Properties, we have adapted to these changes by offering customisation options for our clients. This allows them to redesign their units based on their specific needs and preferences. We anticipate client needs to continue evolving, and we are committed to providing the flexibility and features that cater to these emerging demands.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken, and did it pay off?
Risk is essential in business. Without risk, growth and expansion are limited. Personally, I thrive on taking calculated risks to achieve my goals. The launch of AHS Properties during the peak of the pandemic was undoubtedly a major risk. Many cautioned against it, citing economic uncertainty and global challenges. However, I believed in the opportunity, observing how Dubai managed the crisis and its resilient economy attracting wealthy individuals seeking stability. Recognising this trend, I decided to proceed despite the prevailing uncertainties. Thanks to strategic planning and a deep understanding of the market dynamics, AHS Properties has flourished. We’ve capitalised on the unique circumstances presented by the pandemic and Dubai’s appeal, successfully establishing ourselves in the market.
Have you had any mentors on your journey? And if so, what knowledge did they impart?
My father, Hussain Sajwani, has been my ultimate mentor and role model. From a young age, he guided me through the intricacies of business and instilled in me the importance of leadership and team management. His support was pivotal when I embarked on launching AHS Group and AHS Properties. His encouragement and belief in the niche I chose for AHS Properties were instrumental in my decision-making process. I am immensely grateful for his guidance and proud to be his son.

What do you know now that you wish you had known at the start of your career?
Looking back, I realise the importance of the learning journey and the growth that comes from experiencing challenges first-hand. While it’s natural to wish for foresight, I believe that discovering insights along the way has been fundamental to my development as an entrepreneur. Mistakes, innovations, and the process of creating and managing businesses have shaped my understanding and approach. Embracing this continuous learning cycle has been essential to my journey, and I now appreciate the value of every step taken.
“By channeling negative thoughts into proactive problem-solving and maintaining confidence in our capabilities, we turn adversity into opportunities for growth and success”
During challenging times, how do you put negative thoughts and emotions to good use?
In challenging moments, I maintain a positive outlook by reminding myself that difficulties are temporary and can lead to positive outcomes. Reflecting on past challenges and how we overcame them reinforces this belief. I prioritise open communication with my team, fostering discussions to explore and implement effective solutions. Believing in our mission and being surrounded by talented individuals ensures that we navigate challenges smoothly and emerge stronger. By channeling negative thoughts into proactive problem-solving and maintaining confidence in our capabilities, we turn adversity into opportunities for growth and success.
What’s on the horizon for your business and yourself?
At AHS Properties, our vision remains on delivering exceptional ultra-luxury living experiences in prime locations. We are committed to elevating the standards of luxury real estate by not only meeting but exceeding our clients’ expectations. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our portfolio with innovative projects that redefine luxury living. Our focus will be on incorporating unique amenities and thoughtful design elements that resonate with discerning buyers. Personally, I aspire to further refine my skills and insights to effectively steer AHS Properties toward continued success and excellence. Together with my team, we are poised to embrace new opportunities and challenges, staying true to our commitment to exceptional quality and client satisfaction.
How do you make time for yourself after a long day?
Balancing work and personal life is essential for me. While my days are primarily focused on business, I prioritise quality time during meals with my family and friends. These moments allow me to unwind and connect with loved ones, which I truly enjoy. When it comes to longer breaks, such as family trips, I remain connected to work but in a more limited capacity. This allows me to prioritise and delegate tasks while still being available if needed. This balance enables me to re-charge and enjoy meaningful time with my family while ensuring business operations continue smoothly. Finding these moments of relaxation and connection amidst a busy schedule is vital for maintaining well-being and sustaining productivity in both personal and professional aspects of life.

FitnGlam Founder on transforming the landscape of women’s fitness in UAE

Lifeby Sarah Joseph1 hour ago In January’s – The Alignment Issue cover story, Raising the Bar, Founder of FitnGlam, Helena Hijazi shares how she embarked on a journey to transform the landscape of women’s fitness in the region.Scroll through to read the interview below. What inspired you to launch FitnGlam? After moving to Dubai, I struggled to find a fitness space that catered exclusively to women, offering both privacy and a full range of equipment and services. The mixed gyms had small, under-equipped women-only areas. I envisioned a place where women could comfortably access all forms of fitness and wellness under one roof – cardio, weights, classes, and community – without the need to compromise. This was the inspiration behind FitnGlam. The facility also has direct access to a CRYO clinic, providing members with a rounded holistic journey – tell us more.We aim to offer as much value as possible to our members and our partnership with CRYO adds an exciting dimension to the FitnGlam experience. We want to provide a well-rounded approach to health and fitness and ensure our community has access to the latest and most effective wellness therapies. Cryotherapy has a lot of benefits, such as reducing muscle soreness, inflammation and accelerating recovery after workouts. I personally use CRYO and love the experience. It is now a key part of my wellness practises and perfectly complements my fitness routine. You’ve created a place in the UAE where women could just be themselves – was this the plan from the outset?Yes, absolutely – since day one, our focus with FitnGlam was to build a space where women could truly be themselves. We recognised the need for a fitness and wellness facility for women that catered to more than just the physical aspects of exercise. We wanted to create a space where women could feel entirely comfortable, both physically and emotionally, to embark on their fitness journeys. In many fitness settings, women can sometimes feel selfconscious or judged, which can be a significant barrier to achieving their goals. We wanted to break down those barriers and have an environment where women of all backgrounds, fitness levels, and ages could come together, support one another, and focus on their individual aspirations without any fear of judgment.FitnGlam has handpicked personal trainers and nutrition coaches who work with clients on custom plans. Can you expand on this? Our approach is personalised for each individual member. We start by simply having an open and honest conversation about your goals, expectations, fitness experience, and dietary needs. From there, our expert trainers and nutrition coaches collaborate to create tailored plans that align with your individual needs. These plans might incorporate strength training, cardio, or classes depending on your preferences, with a balanced dietary plan to complement your fitness and health journey. Our members’ success is our success, so we stay involved every step of the way to provide guidance, support, and motivation throughout the process and to ensure the results are long-term.To refuel, guests can visit PROTEINHOUSE – how important was it to have a dining space that complements the wellness element? We all know that fitness is not just about the exercises you do; it’s also about what you eat and the nutrition you provide your body. That is why we partnered with PROTEINHOUSE. It’s a place where members can grab a nutritious meal, snack, or smoothie pre- or post-workout, giving them the right fuel to make the most out of their fitness journey. We actually worked with PROTEINHOUSE to create a bespoke menu for FitnGlam centered around women – with preferred sizes, ingredients, and nutritional profiles that support a healthy, active female lifestyle. This means the food not only tastes great but also complements the specific nutritional needs of our members, whether they’re looking to build muscle, lose weight, or simply maintain a balanced diet. The gym has everything from boxing, Barre, yoga to Pilates – what are some of the main classes offered? We offer all sorts of classes for different interests and fitness levels. Our most popular classes are HIIT, Cycle, and Boxing for intense, calorie-burning sessions, yoga for flexibility and mindfulness, and Pilates for core strengthening and toning. We also offer specialised classes like dance-based workouts, and Barre for those who enjoy a mix of ballet, Pilates, and yoga. Our classes are boutique and specifically designed for women, so our members can always find something that resonates with their personal fitness journey. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?One of the most significant challenges we faced in the journey of establishing FitnGlam was entering the highly competitive fitness industry, particularly with like a huge risk, as many people warned us against excluding men from our clubs and cutting off half the potential customers. However, we wanted to stay true to our vision. We knew there was a specific need in the market for a fitness and wellness space dedicated solely to women. By focusing on this niche and building a club to suit the preferences of women from all walks of life, we not only stood out but also created a strong brand identity. This was ultimately our greatest strength, as it allowed us to build a community of over 8,000 women strong and an environment where women could feel comfortable, empowered, and supported on their fitness and wellness journeys.Do you enjoy managing the commercial or creative side of the business? My background is in the commercial side of business, but I would say that over time I have gravitated more towards the creative side. I felt this shift when we were developing the concept of FitnGlam, as I was trying to incorporate my own passion and vision into every aspect of the experience. I wanted to empower women through my own experiences with fitness and wellness but also through our shared experiences as women. This required a lot of creativity and reflection, and it has been really fulfilling to help shape the fitness experience at FitnGlam in this way. However, I also enjoy the commercial aspects of business and it is important to strike the right balance between both sides. So, I make sure to divide my focus and time on the commercial side to make sure we are running a sustainable business but also on the creative side to continue evolving and innovating the brand in ways that resonate with our community. What piece of advice would you tell your younger self?I would tell my younger self to trust the journey and not to fear taking risks. It’s important to believe in your vision, even if it seems overwhelming or unconventional at first. Also, I would say to never underestimate the power of hard work and even failure. There will always be challenges and setbacks in anything we do, but these are important learning opportunities. Embrace them, learn from them, and use them to become the best version of yourself. This is The Alignment Issue – what activities help you align yourself in daily life? For me, alignment comes from staying active and moving my body. I’ve found that this not only boosts my energy levels but also helps in maintaining focus and clarity in other areas of my life. I try to prioritise regular exercise, whether it’s a gym workout, a yoga session, or simply a walk outside. This is a key part of maintaining both my physical and mental health. Also, making time and spending time with my family. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of daily responsibilities, but for me spending time with my family provides a sense of grounding and connection that is so important for my overall alignment.January’s – The Alignment Issue with FitnGlam  – Download Now– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied More

The Free Spirit – The Summer Escape Issue with Tania Santos Silva

    Life

    by Amy Sessions

    VIEW GALLERY/ 7 IMAGES
For our July/August cover, we champion Tania Santos Silva in The Free Spirit.
A businesswoman that knows how to still leave room for the freedom that enhances her creativity, we have admired Silva’s fierce independence and vibrancy for life along with her sharp mind and quick wit. A truly incredible EW woman.
How do you balance your business side and creativity?
On and off, I connect and disconnect. It’s hard but doable to be focused on the business and its daily management and be creative simultaneously. It’s like two sides of the same coin. It’s almost like mastering self-control; it’s a daily effort, sometimes exhausting, but the results are super rewarding.
You have multiple businesses – are you driven by an entrepreneurial mindset, and what is your latest venture?
I do; sometimes I wonder why!!! But this buzz inside me tests me and pushes me to do more and become more. I love to multitask; usually, my “ideas” come from my need to have something, and my last venture was just that. I hate to wear tampons or intimate pads during those monthly “hormonal” days, especially if I’m going to the beach… so after some lengthy research for the right technology I launched MaiSwim. This is not just another leak-proof swimwear because there are a few already, it’s sustainable, has cool, clean designs and we even support the cleaning of the oceans with every order. I’m super proud of the concept and the team. We launched only last month, and of course, it’s made in Portugal.
How do you know when to push forward and when to give yourself space?
I learned this very young as I’m an only child, so I had time alone. Now I adapt the learning to daily situations. I invest a lot in my sanity, from therapy to mindfulness, ice baths, and breathing techniques that help me build the emotional intelligence and insight I need. I love some “me time,” and being completely alone – it’s like food for the soul. This comes when my body talks to me and prepares me for the overwhelming emotions approaching; in those moments, I disconnect. Usually, I’m back on my feet within 24 hours feeling recharged.
What have been the biggest signs you’re on the right track, and how have you learned to follow your gut?
It’s unbelievable how cliché this is, but the gut is always right. I have a very close group of people who trust, invest in, and listen to me. That alone is invaluable and is the biggest sign that I must be doing things right.
You’re able to think outside the box – have you always been able to do this, and how has it served you?
Being able to think outside the box sometimes makes me “the odd one out,” I have to be honest, especially during my teenage years. I’m from a tiny city in Portugal, Coimbra. From a very young age, my closest friends told me: “You’re not a fish of this river” and that stuck with me. I’ve never let one opportunity go and I’m never afraid of leaving my comfort zone; you grow and truly evolve when you do step outside our comfort zone. My creative self still thinks outside the box – I adapt the thinking to the business without getting too emotional.
What does freedom mean to you, and how do you create it for yourself?
What is freedom? The dictionary says it’s the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants. But when my freedom violates others’ freedom, then it’s not freedom anymore. It’s exercising power. Freedom is love; freedom is to breathe, to travel wherever you want with whomever you want. Freedom is to hug and be hugged; freedom is sun and light, moon and darkness. Freedom to me means everything and nothing. I fight daily to adapt my freedom to my familyʼs freedom. That’s one of my biggest challenges.
Where has been the best place you’ve visited globally, and why?
I’ve been to so many places; I’m pretty lucky… but I have to say, Tibet. Landing in Lhasa is out of this world. The smiles I’ve seen there still fill my heart today. I went with my husband, we decided to visit Everest base camp before my pregnancy, and we did it. Some crazy and intense days of no potable water or shower, but reaching base camp at 5500 altitude at 5 am was all worth it. The sky there is different… I love this type of experience that pushes you to your limit. Next one? Summit Kilimanjaro.
Where has been the place that has given you or your business the most growth?
Well, I would say my second home country: Angola. I lived and worked there for almost ten years before moving to Dubai, and I still have a lot of family there. I grew so much in that professional environment, which is extra demanding for a woman, that I can face any professional environment honestly.
This is The Summer Escape Issue – where will you be escaping to this summer?
From Portugal to Porto Cervo in Italy, from Mallorca in Spain to Montreal in Canada. I will enjoy a bit of the other side of the world, take inspiration and insight from these places and breathe in new cultures. I never stop working obviously… we don’t have holidays when we work for ourselves!
