Secrets From a Makeup Artist: How to Find Your Perfect Red Lipstick

You know that one outfit that’s your go-to when you want to feel like Beyoncé? Or that one piece of jewelry that just seems to make every outfit complete? No matter how many things you’ve tried on, if you don’t have that one outfit that hits all the right curves or that one piece of jewelry that you love, you just feel incomplete. This is how I feel about lipstick. Lipstick gives me the confidence of Beyoncé while making me feel like I just stepped out of a magazine. There seriously is nothing more gratifying to me than going into Sephora and buying that perfect shade of lipstick, especially red. Now, with the holidays just around the corner, we’re going to help you find that perfect shade of red lipstick that will not only complement your skin tone but will also give you the confidence to impress on all those holiday Zoom parties.
None of this is an exact science either. You can wear any of these shades with any skin tone, and if you feel good, it probably looks good. But if red feels uncomfortable or too bold for you, these are a great starting point to find a shade that works well and still looks somewhat “natural” on you.

    Universal Shades
A true red shade (with equal amounts blue and orange) is likely to look good on every single skin tone because it doesn’t wash out any of the undertones in your skin. When in doubt, opt for one of these shades. These tend to be brighter and bolder, but that’s perfect for the holidays!

    Fair Complexions
Fair complexions usually have a pink-based undertone. To really compliment your skin tone, use blue-based reds or pink-based reds—think raspberry tones. These red lipsticks will pick up the pink tones in your complexion and really make your smile pop.

    Light Complexions
Light complexions typically lean neutral or warm-toned. To really compliment your skin tone, use a slight orange-based red. These lipsticks will pick up the golden undertones and really brighten your complexion.

    Medium Complexions
Medium complexions can lose and gain a suntan easily, so change your red lip based on the season. In the summertime when you are soaking up rays, wear an orange-based red. This will compliment your bronze skin and lend a brightening look to your complexion.

In the winter when you’re cozying up by the fire, wear a blue-based red. This will complement your lighter skin tone while giving the appearance of brighter teeth.

    Olive Complexions
Olive skin tones have a yellow-green undertone that tans very easily. To really complement your bronze skin tone, use a brick or rust-colored red. These earthy tones will warm up your complexion while blending with your skin effortlessly.

    Caramel Complexions
Caramel complexions have a yellow-based undertone. To really compliment your skin tone, use a true cherry red. These red lipsticks will pick up the warmth in your skin tone and really brighten your smile.

    Golden Dark Complexions
Golden dark skin tones have a yellow undertone.  This type of skin tone can really play with pigment when it comes to choosing a red lipstick. For a bolder look, try a true red. This will pick up the warmth in your skin and create a brighter complexion.

For a more natural-looking red, try blue-based reds—think oxblood. This will compliment your darker skin tone and create a unified look.

    Deep Complexions
Deep complexions can really play with pigment when it comes to red lipsticks. If you want a bolder look, use an orange-based red to really make your pout pop.

To have a more natural-looking red, use a blue-based red—think Merlot. Both types of reds will compliment your skin tone and create a brighter smile. More

12 Products That Will Help You Beat Seasonal Dryness

If you’ve been following any facet of The Everygirl, you may have come to the overwhelming conclusion that we are absolutely obsessed with the holiday season. The days of snuggling up with hot cocoa and watching Hallmark movies are in full swing, and as the last month of the year approaches, we welcome twinkling lights, cozy home decor, and Christmas cookies with open arms.In my daydreams of December, I’ve romanticized what winter looks like and I’ve forgotten to factor in one unfavorable downfall of crisp air and cool temperatures: dry skin season is upon us, and this year, we simply aren’t letting a dehydrated, itchy exterior ruin our winter.
Whether you’re like me and are already in the woes of seasonal dryness or simply want to stop dry skin in its tracks, it’s important to stock up on all types of moisturizers for the cold, harsh days ahead. I’ve tried approximately one million different products (give or take) that have claimed to lock in moisture to foster soft, glowing skin. After years of seasonally struggling with eczema, chapped lips, a peeling nose, and dry hair, I’ve built up quite the army of moisturizers to treat the most stubborn dry, rough, and dull skin in the game.
Check out these 12 holy grail products that have my back when my skin is *itching* for attention:

    Love Beauty and Planet
    Majestic Moisture Body Wash

Your battle against dry skin starts in the shower. I use this Majestic Moisture body wash made of all-natural ingredients to scrub-a-dub without drying out my skin at step one.

    Nourishing Dry Body Oil

I spritz this dry oil all over my body when I’m fresh out of the shower and in a rush (AKA every day). It’s lightweight and dries quickly so I can put my clothes on within two minutes of applying.

    Moisturizing Cream

I have a lot of go-to moisturizing products, but this moisturizing cream is my absolute favorite. If I could fill up a bathtub of this stuff and take a cool dip in it every night, I would. I lather this on before bed and let it work its magic through the night.

    Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Time and time again, I try new face washes and walk-of-shame back to this hydrating facial cleanser. The only downside to this guy is that it doesn’t lather up (sigh), BUT I continue to use it because it’s the only face wash that doesn’t leave me feeling like Spongebob in the beloved “Sandy, I need water” scene.

    KORA Organics
    Noni Glow Face Oil

OK, I’m not usually one to splurge on beauty products; however, this is my one and only exception because 1) I’m absolutely obsessed, and 2) I find that a little bit of this product goes a long way. I started using this face oil last year, and now I will never use anything else. I use this after my toner/before my moisturizer and I look forward to using it. It smells amazing and leaves my face and neck glowing and so unbelievably smooth.

    Josie Maran
    Whipped Argan Oil Face Butter

This whipped face butter is a dream. come. true. I use it as the last step of my nighttime skincare routine, and it’s basically dessert for my face. It’s hydrating yet non-suffocating and puts in WORK while I’m fast asleep.

    Like Butter

I reach for this healing and soothing mask 2-3 times a week whenever my skin is looking dull and needs a pick-me-up. After cleansing, I apply this to my face, leave it on for 20 minutes, and dab off the excess if any remains. This stuff works really well on other areas of the body so when my eczema decides to show up uninvited, I’ll use Like Butter on my dry spots as well.

    Mrs. Meyer’s
    Lavender Hand Balm

Dry hands, be gone! In addition to dry skin season, we’re also approaching the dreaded cold and flu season. That means we’ll be washing our hands even more frequently (yay!) and simultaneously drying them out (boo). This Mrs. Meyer’s lavender hand balm smells incredible, is soothing, and is conveniently portable.

    Lip Repair

Speaking of products that follow me wherever I go, this Aquaphor lip repair is the lip ointment I’m currently using. By currently using, I mean actually using, right now, at this very moment. This powerful little tube will keep you from looking in the mirror and questioning “Did I black out while applying a mid-day, hot pink lip stain or are my lips just dry, red, and irritated?”

    Deep Conditioning Hair Mask

If there’s one part of my beauty routine that I skimp on in the moisturizing department, it’s my poor, brittle hair. I’m adding this hair mask to my fall/winter beauty routine because moisturized hair makes for healthy, shiny, and bouncy locks.

    Bread Beauty Supply
    Hair Oil Everyday Gloss

Unlike a lot of the hair oils I’ve tried, this hair oil is non-greasy and lightweight. This oil has been my answer to dried out hair, split ends, and frizz and it’s my new hair routine staple! More

The Complete Gift Guide for Beauty Lovers

If your family knows you love beauty products, they’ve probably tried to gift it to you in the past. And while some end up being great (my aunt, God bless her soul, got me a giant set of Estee Lauder once, and while I used very little of the makeup, the skincare ended up being quite luxe and divine as a 20-year-old), they’re often rife with products we won’t use. Oh, she likes makeup? Buy her an eyeshadow palette—and make sure it’s all very light neutral browns she can wear to work, because she certainly doesn’t have five other palettes of neutral browns at home! Skincare lover? Fridge that won’t fit anywhere in her tiny apartment bathroom it is! And of course, they’re buying you yet another hair tool that will sit in the back of your drawer for eons. Don’t get me wrong, I stand by that any gift is a great gift, especially one as thoughtful as makeup or haircare for someone you know loves those things. But we’re in the business of giving the best gifts this year to show your friends and family a little extra love this holiday season, and I’ll be damned if I don’t show you just how many amazing beauty gifts exist out there. Just because your BFF, mom, brother, aunt, cousin-twice-removed, coworker, Secret Santa, or any other loved one loves beauty doesn’t mean they’re in for a lame gift. We found all the best gift sets, new items, unique products, and splurges they’ll be beyond excited to open and will actually use for years to come. And if you’re a beauty-lover, well then your wishlist just got a lot longer.

    Rae Wellness
    Hydration Drops

A little extra hydration never hurt anyone, especially in the dead of winter. Instead of another cream or lotion, these actually improve your skin from the inside, making this a no-brainer gift for the skincare-loving people in your life.

    Baby Tress at Nordstrom
    3-in-1 Edge Styler™ Tool

Not only is this three-in-one edge styler effective, but it’s a great addition to a bigger gift, a hair product, or a stocking stuffer. Available in six pretty colors, whoever you buy this for will love it.

    Joanna Vargas
    Glow From Within

This book single-handedly got me to finally follow a skincare routine, but even as someone who knew a lot about beauty going in, I learned so much from Joanna’s expertise. She’s been a celebrity aesthetician for years and is known for treating the skin of some seriously A-List stars like Greta Gerwig, Julianne Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, and more. Consider this a solid gift for the beauty amateurs and seasoned professionals alike.

    LaPierre Cosmetics
    Nail Lacquer

We’ve done it: the perfect red nail polish for the season. You’ll never wonder which color to paint your nails again.

    Super Absorbent Hair Turban

Gift extra healthy hair this season with this microfibre hair turban. Your hair is extra gentle when it’s wet, so it’s important to use a soft, microfibre to keep the moisture in rather than your typical bath towel. Plus, the microfibre pulls out the water faster, so your hair dries in a cinch.

    Alchemy Body Shop
    Halo Whipped Body Scrub

This salt scrub is extra nourishing and moisturizing because it contains coconut oil and shea butter. Any beauty-lover knows the importance of sloughing off the dead skin, especially in the winter, and this scrub does that without drying your skin out.

    Rosen Skincare
    Tingling Mud Mask

Skincare can be hard to gift (everyone’s skin is SO different), but you can almost never go wrong with some sort of mask. Everyone loves to lay on the couch sipping hot cocoa and watching Christmas movies with a face mask on; it’s simply bliss. This one from Rosen is perfect for those with acne-prone and oily skin; try this one if you’re loved one has dry skin.

Ultra Soft Microfiber Hair Drying Scrunchies

This immediately made its way to my personal wishlist. I love my hair turban so much, but sometimes, I just want something to put my hair up into a bun while it’s wet, and this sounds like the perfect solution to that problem. If you have long or thick to coily hair, this won’t dry your strands completely, but it’s a good addition to your stash. And for my fellow thin-to-medium hair types, frizz has met its match.

    Tower 28 Beauty
    ShineOn Milky Lip Jelly Gloss

Since this released, I’ve seen it regarded as *the* best lip gloss on the market. Lip gloss has had its resurgence in 2020, with brands launching new iterations of our once least-favorite makeup product left and right. However, these are created without all the stuff we used to hate. They’re hydrating and comfortable with just enough stickiness to last for a long time on the lips. Plus, these shades are to die for—they’re the perfect milky neutrals for any skin tone.

Royal Tonique – Jasmine Hydrating Mist

A gorgeous skincare mist that will look as good on your vanity as it does on your skin is a no-brainer gift for moms and BFFs everywhere. This one from Indian skincare and beauty line, Ranavat, contains antioxidants to protect skin against environmental aggressors while hydrating and plumping the skin. Pair this with the T-Bar above, and you’ve got the ideal under-$50 Secret Santa gift.

    Weezie Towels
    Monogrammed Makeup Towel

Kiss makeup wipes and removers goodbye, and say hello to these monogrammed makeup towels instead! Sick of ruining all of your hand towels washing off the day’s makeup, dirt, and oil from your face? These towels, in a genius dark color, are soft and plush on your face and hands. They’re the perfect gift for a makeup lover—show them how much you respect both their makeup skills and their crisp, white towels with these. They’re literally begging you to stain them!

    Red Lipstick Trio

It’s red lipstick season, and what better way to celebrate than this trio specifically for medium-to-dark/deep skin tones? Not every red is created equal, but this trio varies in depth and undertone to help the recipient create their perfect look over and over again.

Out of Trouble™ 10 Minute Mask to Rescue Problem Skin

This face mask is so good, it goes in and out of stock on Sephora constantly. This 10-minute mask is ideal for treating dull, stressed out skin, which everyone is bound to deal with every once in a while. Snag it while it’s available!

    Small Slipsilk™ Scrunchies

These Slip scrunchies have made it on practically every beauty-lovers’ wishlist at one time or another because they’re a bit of a splurge but a total necessity once you try them. Snags, breakage, and kinks will be a thing of the past when you finally have these on your vanity. These are also available in a set of three for under $25, so they’re an easy add-on item to any gift. Pro tip: buy a pack and divide them up between various gifts!

    Charlotte Tilbury
Mini Iconic Matte Revolution Lipstick Trio

Charlotte Tilbury is a given in any beauty-lover’s collection, so if you’re really stuck on what to get someone, you cannot go wrong with this lipstick set, filled with three of Charlotte’s most iconic shades for under $30.

    Sunday Riley
    Pink Drink Firming Resurfacing Essence

When this launched a few months ago, stores couldn’t keep it on the shelves—but the hype is so real. This essence balances, firms, and resurfaces the skin without drying your skin out, using peptides, chlorella, kelp, fermented honey, and EGCG, an antioxidant from green tea. It’s a spray essence as well, so it’s great for keeping in your makeup bag and misting whenever you feel blah. Our team loves Sunday Riley, and this launch is no exception.

Pamper Variety Sheet Mask Gift Set

Y’all, this set contains 10 (!!!) different sheet masks, plus two exfoliators, for the price you sometimes cant even find for one mask. These LAPCOS masks are filled with nourishing ingredients that make your skin extra glowy every time. Im a huge fan of their hand mask as well—its essential for keeping my hands soft after tons of washing and sanitizing!

    Equilibria
    Daily Treatment Oil

Not only does this treatment oil look super luxe, it’s filled with full-spectrum CBD, squalane oil, evening primrose oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, and more nourishing oils. I use this after moisturizer in my nighttime skincare routine when my skin is broken out to calm down inflammation and redness, and it works flawlessly; but the list of uses is endless. I’ve tried a lot of facial oils on the market, and this one has quickly made it to the tippy-top of my favorites.
Use code code theeverygirl for 20% off your first order!

    Sonic Toothbrush

A toothbrush might not seem like your ordinary beauty-lovers’ gift, but this isn’t your ordinary toothbrush either. This sonic toothbrush is made of charcoal bristles to promote whiter teeth without all those sensitizing strips and toothpastes. Plus, its bristles are gentler than other toothbrushes (no bleeding gums!), it vibrates to tell you to move to another area of the mouth, and it automatically shuts off after two minutes. Oh, and it comes in three colors. It’s basically the smartphone of toothbrushes.

    Serums Trio

If you want something a little more than just a serum (although we highly suggest Glow Maker on its own!), grab this set of Maelove’s three serums for calming, hydrating, and brightening.

Polished Perfection Thermal Straightening Brush 2.0

Blow-dry brushes aren’t a new concept, but they’re essential in the toolkit of a busy person who still wants to look put-together (i.e. pretty much everyone you know). This straightening brush makes straightening your hair a breeze and eliminates some of the breakage and damage you would get from a traditional flat iron. Plus, it’s under $100? Who couldn’t name at least five people in their life who’d love this?

    Vanity Planet
    Aira Ionic Facial Steamer

At-home spa days have only just begun, and this facial steamer is a great addition to a skincare routine someone might not have thought of yet. Steam is a great tool to help you relax and soften the skin, making extractions, peels, and masks even more effective on the surface of your skin. Tip: add your favorite essential oil for an ultra-relaxing spa experience at home!

    Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Essentials Set

Sets can be a tricky thing to purchase. But when you find a mind-blowing one like this, you want to shout it from the rooftops. This contains a full-size of our editor-favorite Benefiance eye cream (it’s super hydrating and plumping while preventing wrinkles), which already makes it worth the $70 price tag. So, you’re essentially getting all of these extras for free! The Benefiance eye patches are another TEG editor favorite, and the day cream and concentrate for perfect for addressing dryness this winter. This is the ideal skincare set that’s on my personal wishlist!

    Grande Cosmetics
Goldie Luxe Lash and Brow Serum Set

Another set that’s totally worth the money, if you’ve had your eye on GrandeLash (the eyelash serum our editors swear by for long, thick lashes), go for this set. You get your money’s worth with the full-size lash serum, making the travel-size lash and brow serums a bonus.

    Honey Infused Hair Oil

Gisou is *the* social media brand of 2020, so you’ve probably seen its gorgeous branding all over Instagram already. This luxe hair oil is up there in price, but the 590 five-star reviews on Sephora all say it’s totally worth it. For a glamorous gift, opt for this.

    Olaplex Restore & Protect Set

It’s no secret were huge Olaplex fans here. If you color your hair in any capacity, Olaplex is essential for keeping your hair healthy and strong. The Bond Smoother is my favorite product from the line (it’s the best leave-in treatment I’ve ever tried and lasts forever), but we also can’t forget the tried-and-true No. 3 Hair Perfector: the ultimate pre-shower treatment to lock in moisture and actually rebuild your hair from the inside out. And if you’re trying both, you might as well try the set, which includes a travel-size conditioner and both the shampoo and conditioner in mini sizes to try.

    Mini Facial Toning Device

You’ve heard us rave about the NuFACE countless times over the last year, and there was never a better time to get it than now. Beauty gadgets don’t always feel like something you can easily purchase yourself, especially when they’re a splurge. This makes it an ideal gift that someone won’t see coming but will be thanking you for endlessly. Need one more reminder about what the NuFace is? It’s a microcurrent facial toning device that emits electricity into the face (wild, right?) to help with evening skin tone, promoting collagen production, reducing wrinkles and fine lines, and my favorite: contouring the face. This is the #1 beauty product I’ve added to my life this year, and trust me: I’ve tried A LOT.

Beauty Sleep Pillow and Eye Mask Collection Gift Set

In the same vein as the Slip hair ties, their pillowcase and eye mask set are a beauty-lovers’ dream. I was a naysayer for a while, but after trying the pillowcase recently, I’m officially a believer. It has noticeably impacted the health of my hair, and it’s pretty comfortable to sleep on too! If you do your hair at night, this is a must because it hold your style even while you’re tossing and turning. This is the splurge-y gift you cannot go wrong with—I don’t know a single person who wouldn’t swoon seeing this under their Christmas tree. More

How I’m Changing My Hair Care Routine for Winter

The weather we’re experiencing in November 2020 can be described as nothing other than a catfish. Although it looks sunny and beautiful outside some days, it’s full of deceit, because I’m freezing my butt off even though it looks like another gorgeous fall day. Winter hit us pretty quick, with temperatures falling below the 30s right away and other days looking reminiscent of the weather we expect to experience in September. The worst part of all is that although I can’t live in the cheery holiday joy of streets lined with snow, the effects of winter are already hitting my skin and hair pretty hard. As the seasons change, we all have a pretty good handle on how our lives need to shift in order to keep up with the ways in which our bodies and mind shift for the new weather: we pile on moisturizer day and night, we wake up earlier to get a little bit more time with the sun, and we fill our days with blissful cozy blankets and scarves and slippers to feel at peace right at home. But my hairdresser would be remiss if I didn’t bring up all that I’ve done to keep my hair in tip-top shape this winter too.
Especially as we’ll be likely heading into more time spent at home again and fewer opportunities to see a stylist, our haircare routines will need to reflect that. I’ve focused on growing longer, stronger, healthier hair in the last year, and I won’t dare let a little cold weather come between me and a good hair day anytime soon. Here’s how I’m tackling winter’s biggest hair woes and what changes I’m making for winter.

    1. Using less dry shampoo
In my last hair appointment, my stylist practically scolded me (in the best way) for overusing dry shampoo. My scalp is already irritated and flaky in the winter, and she explained that dry shampoo is one of the biggest aggravators of an irritated scalp. Of course, we don’t have to give up our beloved hair savior entirely, but using it a little less is recommended. I won’t be going out and about as often, and it’s easy to pull my greasy hair back in a clip or under a hat on Zoom calls when I don’t feel like washing.

    2. Swapping for a silk pillowcase
I didn’t believe these worked until I finally tried one, and I am actually noticing a difference in my hair. I am a really hard sleeper, tossing and turning practically all night, rubbing the poor crown of my head into a pillowcase for hours on end. The back of my head is super prone to breakage for this reason, and it’s taken me about the last year to finally grow that part of my hair out. I only recently added a silk pillowcase, but I’ve already noticed it’s made a huge difference. If I do my hair the night before, my style stays, and I wake up with bedhead that is ever-so-slightly less abrasive.

    3. Increasing deep conditioning treatments
I have fine, thin hair that typically needs cleansing way more than it needs moisture, but in the dryness of winter, I like to up my conditioning treatments to make up for any of the hydration loss I experience on my ends. Instead of only once a week, I use my deep conditioner more like two or three times (which sometimes is the same amount I wash my hair!). If I notice my hair feels a little weighed down, I’ll skip it and opt for my daily conditioner the next time, but overall, it’s made my hair extra soft and silky.

    Elizavecca
CER-100 Collagen Coating Hair Protein Treatment

This doesnt look like much, but it is the best hair mask I have ever tried in my life. I would hand over every other product in my shower if I had to choose to keep just one. It. is. life-changing.

    4. Opting for clips instead of hair ties
My hairdresser (hi Krystal, ilysm) recently posted about the havoc putting your hair up in a bun all the time can do on your hair. I have extra fine hair too, which makes it even harder to keep my hair from breaking off all the time. Since winter started, I’ve been noticing a lot more dryness in my hair, so to prevent any damage of breakage in my hair, I’m opting for claw clips instead of hair ties to keep my hair as loose as possible and avoid pulling it back too much. And when I do use a hair tie, I’m choosing materials that are really soft on the hair like silk and microfiber.

    5. Mixing a hair oil with my conditioner
To make my daily conditioner even more effective, I’ve been adding a drop of hair oil. For starters, it makes the styling process so much easier, as my hair already has a bit of a leave-in product in it. But it also makes my daily conditioner just a bit more moisturizing and nourishing for my hair without needing to add another step into my routine.
It also prevents the wretched static I experience when my hair goes under a turtleneck or coat, which might even make it the #1 reason why I love this trick.

    6. Add a multivitamin
Adding a hair vitamin into my supplement routine is much newer to my routine, but I’m excited to see how it impacts the health of my hair throughout the next few months. Simply put, when you’re healthy on the inside, your scalp and hair are healthy; we all know that. In the winter, especially around the holidays, I often get too busy or bogged down and focus on my health much less than normal, so taking a few vitamins like vitamin D, a pre and probiotic, evening primrose oil (to balance hormones—it’s been so helpful for my endometriosis!), and iron might help to preemptively make up for any times I slip up and order Postmates one too many nights in a row. Make sure to always consult your doctor before adding in any new vitamins or supplements to your healthcare regimen; you don’t want to waste your money on a supplement you might not need, hence proving the “expensive pee” notion once again.

    7. Exfoliating my scalp once a week
While moisturizing your scalp and hair is definitely part of getting rid of flakes and itchiness, doing a good scalp exfoliation once a week is going to help the issue ten-fold. My hairdresser actually recommends I don’t exfoliate my scalp too often because I’m prone to irritation, but in the winter, it’s OK to increase a little bit to make up for the various issues my hair is dealing with at once (my scalp isn’t a lovely place this time of year TBH). I use both a scalp scrubber (one of the best inventions on Earth) and a physical exfoliant like a scalp scrub. I’ll do a little massage while I work this into my scalp, and it’s honestly self-care to the max. Tip: when I don’t have an exfoliator on hand or want to customize the granules in my scrub, I mix a little bit of baking soda (as much as I want—some days I want to feel my scalp tingle, and others I only want a light wisp of a scrub) with my shampoo.

    8. Adding a dandruff shampoo once a week
My hair gets both flaky from dryness and causes some dandruff here and there in the wintertime. When my scalp is dry, it’s mostly just dry patches flaking off, and I’ll combat that with a scalp oil and a massage. However, when my scalp is suffering with dandruff, my scalp is inflamed, oily, and red. When this happens, the only way to find relief is sucking it up and opting for a dandruff shampoo once or twice a week. I always make sure I give myself a little massage with it too to really get it in there and remove any flakes while treating the scalp.

    Source: @tyra_brielle for @revolvebeauty

    9. Swapping my shampoo for something gentle
Just in the same way you probably swapped for an oil or milky facial cleanser for the winter, you’ll want to do the same for your hair. Say goodbye to those drying volume shampoos and clarifying shampoos for a little bit just to add some extra moisture into your hair if you’re dealing with dryness.
And when I feel like there’s a lot of buildup on my scalp, instead of reaching for a really harsh, drying shampoo, I opt for the oil-cleansing method instead. It keeps the moisture on my scalp balanced while cleaning my scalp and hair thoroughly.

    10. Doing an oil or aloe massage before every shampoo
This is perhaps overkill, and there will be days that I don’t have time, but if I can, I’ve been using aloe gel to massage into my scalp every night before I know I’ll be washing my hair the next day and sleeping in it. This has made a huge difference in my hair, especially because the aloe is so calming on the scalp. If your scalp is really dry, you could also use an oil to add some extra moisture, and since you’ll leave it on overnight, it will really absorb.

    11. Use extra leave-in products to combat frizz
If you deal with tons of frizz in the winter (one of the most common winter hair problems), a really easy way to reduce it is using even more leave-in products, especially leave-in conditioner. Don’t overload your hair with product, but use just enough to keep your style intact and add enough grit to your hair to keep it from puffing up. A good leave-in conditioner should keep your hair smooth and shiny all day.

    Source: @t3micro

    12. Reduce my blow-drying time
My hair is already taking a beating from the weather, I might as well do it some good by limiting my heat-styling. Blow drying can absolutely kill the hair if you do it too much, but I also hate leaving the house with wet hair—see Grandma, I listened all those years! I’m getting the best of both worlds by using products to reduce the time I have to spend blow drying, like mists and creams that help your hair dry on its own. I also use a microfiber hair towel as soon as I get out of the shower which rings out a lot of the excess water and helps my hair to start drying as much as possible before I put heat on it. Less time with the blow dryer = less damage = happy hair.  More

16 Solutions for Winter’s Biggest Skincare Problems

So, it’s officially winter. I’m a winter-lover, dreaming of snow and hot cocoa and movie nights practically every summer night. But what I despise is how my skin reacts to my beloved cold weather. Instead of brimming with happiness and cheer like my insides, I’m struggling with dryness, flaking, irritation, redness, and more. What gives? And what’s worse: this year, I can’t even go to a Christmas market or holiday shop downtown to make up for it. I’m over you, 2020. However, if I have to make the most of it, I will, and this year, it includes finally getting a handle on every beauty issue winter brings. What better use of our time at home than finally figuring out how to manage all those horrific side effects winter curses us with? We pulled out all of our best tips, from editors to dermatologists and estheticians, to help you with every skin ailment plaguing you this season. I sadly can’t tell you how the holidays will go this year, but I can make sure you look damn good no matter what you’re doing.

    Try aloe gel
This was a recent recommendation from my hairdresser when I complained about an itchy, dry scalp. We already know aloe vera is calming, soothing, and moisturizing when we use it on our sunburned skin in the summer. It does the same for a dry scalp! She recommended I put pure aloe gel on my scalp the nights before I know I’ll shower in the morning and sleep with it on (if you’re a night shower-er, you could also apply it and remove after an hour). I use this time to do a scalp massage with the aloe, focusing it on the parts of my scalp that get the driest. It’s made a huge difference, and a huge container of aloe gel cost me about $5.

    Use a BHA shampoo
If your scalp is dry and flaky, it might be because of product buildup—especially dry shampoo. Although we swear by it for keeping our style intact and skipping washes, stylists and trichologists (they focus on your hair health—trust me: they’re good people) aren’t as big of fans because dry shampoo powder can gunk up your roots and make your scalp feel dry and flaky. To combat it, try a shampoo with a BHA like salicylic acid. This will remove all of that buildup by chemically exfoliating the scalp. Make sure you keep the product at your roots and keep away from your ends as much as possible to prevent any dryness.

    Use a cleansing balm/oil
Whether you’re double-cleansing or opting for an oil for extra moisture, it’s one of the easiest but most effective ways to combat skin dehydration, as well as the flakes and dry patches that might come along with it. Dehydration often happens if your skin is really stripped from exfoliating acids, retinol, and more, and when you use a harsher cleansing product or scrub your face, you only make it worse. Instead, focus on putting as much moisture back into your skin as possible.
I recently got a facial, and I fully expected the esthetician to gawk at my clogged pores and give me a regimen for her oiliest of clients, but she actually explained that my skin has been looking dull and clogged because it’s so dehydrated. She recommended taking a break from exfoliators and focusing on moisturizing my skin as much as possible to get my moisture back into my skin and balance the pH levels. Her biggest tip was swapping out my BHA cleanser for something much gentler and hydrating, such as a milky cleanser or a balm or oil. I usually use a cleansing oil to take off makeup, but she recommended even using it again as my second cleanse. She swore by a hydrating cleanser to put my skin back on track—and so far, she’s right!

    “Sandwich” your acids with moisture
In the same vein as above, you want to focus on keeping your skin as moisturized as possible. As most know, acids and retinol can cause a lot of dryness and strip the skin; however, there are ways to still keep them in your routine (my skin freaks when I miss any more than a few days with my tretinoin) without all the irritation. Build your skincare routine around that drying product, making sure to include moisturizing products and ingredients before and after. An easy way to do this is by using a light moisturizer, then applying an acid, and then going over top with a facial oil. You can also do this with hydrating toners, sleeping masks, and more.

Change up your body wash and moisturizer
As much as I love my shea body butter, when I’m dealing with an eczema flare-up on the body, I have to forgo anything scented and focus specifically on eczema-clearing and soothing products. These are some of my favorites that were recommended by many dermatologists I’ve seen over the years:

    Try niacinamide
Niacinamide is one of the trendiest skincare ingredients right now—and it’s for good reason. Anything one ingredient can do, niacinamide can probably do better. It can help reduce the appearance of dark spots, protect and repair your moisture barrier, balance the sebum levels in your skin, and reduce texture—but it’s also a powerhouse in reducing redness and calming the skin. It’s an anti-inflammatory, so it can tackle the irritation and redness you might experience when your skin starts to get uber dry.

    Color correct
If you’re experiencing lots of redness, a quick fix is to use a green color-correcting product. This one from Dr. Jart has been all over Instagram, Tik Tok, and YouTube lately, and the results are wild. Applied to the skin, this product visibly reduces redness temporarily; however, it contains calming ingredients and SPF that make it way more than a color corrector. It turns beige as you blend it in, so some people with light skin tones can even get away with it as a foundation. If you’re looking for something a little lighter weight, this Smashbox primer is a winner.

    Exfoliate with an AHA
This is probably the most effective way to keep KP at bay. Many people notice KP gets worse as the season’s change and especially during the fall and winter. AHAs like lactic and glycolic acid or BHAs like salicylic acid are great for exfoliating the skin and loosening up the dry, dead skin and clearing out the clogged hair follicles in your skin. Many people with KP swear by these products (including me!) and even say they clear up their KP flare-ups in as little as a few applications.

Always blot skin dry after a shower
To keep your skin hydrated and avoid over-exfoliation (which can cause your flare-ups to get even worse because the area gets aggravated), make sure you blot your skin dry with a towel after a bath or shower instead of wiping or scrubbing at your skin. It’s a small step that makes a huge difference over time!

    Moisturize with oils—often
It might not be enough to put your moisturizer on once in the morning and at night. Your skin might benefit from applying moisturizers or oils to the skin often throughout the day. Lately, I keep a moisturizing oil at my desk, so every time I notice my skin feels a little tight or I notice a dry patch, I apply a little extra (and always apply the excess to my hands!).

    Use cool water to wash
Another recommendation after my most recent facial, as well as something I’ve heard from dermatologists time and time again, was to avoid using hot water or even warm water when washing your face. You can use warm water to first wet your face; however, try to use cool water to rinse the cleanser from your skin. Hot water can be harsh and remove oils from the skin (which is why you usually have to use warm water to remove a cleansing oil or balm), so when you’re just using a milky cleanser or something without a lot of oil, try skipping the hot water.

Be gentle when you wash your face
You should also be really gentle with your skin when you’re washing. Avoid loofahs and other harsh exfoliating products for the face and body; your hands or a soft hand towel can usually clean you up just as much as you need. Also, wash your face just like they would if you were getting a facial. They don’t do circular or scrubbing motions; they’re gentle and soft, usually lightly massaging the skin as they go. This is the same approach you should take on your face every day. Being too rough with your cleanser can lead to even more moisture loss over time.

Add a hyaluronic acid to your morning and night routine
Dermatologists swear by hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occuring acid within the skin, to deeply moisturize every layer of your skin. Luckily, it’s now available in tons of products at all different price points. When your skin is going through it (or always if you have dry skin), don’t forget this step. Use a hyaluronic acid at night and in the morning to keep up your moisture levels all day. Tip: always apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin. HA needs water to bond to and pull into the skin; it basically acts like a sponge when applied.

    Add layers of hydration
On top of hyaluronic acid, you’ll want to make sure you’re including multiple products in your routine that offer hydration. For really dry skin, it usually isn’t enough to apply a moisturizer and go. If you’re looking to add more to your routine, a toner or essence is a great way to add lots of layers of moisture because you can apply toner over and over again. Some estheticians apply toner between every single step in your skincare routine—even on top of all of your acids and serums. This acts as a “sandwich” as explained above for any acids, but it also locks that moisture into every single step.

Use all of your moisturizing facial products on your lips
Don’t forget to bring all of those products you use on your face onto your lips! Serums, moisturizers, facial oils, and more should be used on your lips too.

    Invest in a lip mask
An overnight lip mask is one of the best things you can do to up the hydration of your lips. Our editors swear by this one from Laneige. One night with this on, and your lips will feel brand spanking new.

    Find a mask-friendly lip balm
My lips have been getting so dry from being under my mask all the time, but most of my squeezy-tube and tub lip balms are too sticky and get stuck to the inside. So, I put myself on the hunt for the best mask-friendly balms I could bring in my bag to reapply under my mask any time I was out and about (of course, making sure there was no one around when I did so).

Meet the Powerhouse Public Health Expert Behind Beauty Company BLK + GRN

When you add any face mask, deodorant, or body scrub to your BLK + GRN cart, you’re not only buying a top-notch addition to your self-care arsenal—you’re also buying a product that’s non-toxic and made by a Black artisan.Dr. Kristian Edwards, DrPH, the founder of this online marketplace for all-natural beauty and lifestyle products from Black-owned businesses, is on a mission to make living green and shopping Black easier and more transparent. All of BLK + GRN’s products—from makeup to multivitamins to moisturizer—are vetted by Edwards personally, she said, plus aestheticians, dermatologists, makeup artists, and other professionals (since, as anyone who’s explored ‘clean’ beauty knows, just because a concealer or deodorant is made with natural ingredients doesn’t mean it necessarily works).
Edwards hopes BLK + GRN serves as an educational platform too. Shoppers can get to know the entrepreneurs behind a favorite candle, lipstick, or lotion, and find research-backed information on the benefits of switching to products sans potentially harmful chemicals.
The idea for BLK + GRN came to Edwards, a professor of public health at George Washington University, after coming across research showing that beauty products marketed to Black women scored lower in potentially harmful ingredients than those aimed at the general public. Because the report found that Black women appear to buy and use more personal care products, this could mean they’re being exposed to more of these potentially dangerous chemicals.

Edwards felt she had to take action. With the report finding that ingredients in these commonly-found products may be linked to cancer, hormone disruption, allergies, and other serious health conditions, she felt the potential risks were too dire not to. She started by overhauling her own medicine cabinet, seeking to fill it with less harmful products. Around the same time, Edwards read Our Black Year by Maggie Anderson.
“I was convinced of the importance of Black people, and people in general, supporting Black-owned brands, that every dollar should be a vote,” she said. She combined the two goals, looking for natural products that also came from Black makers.
After testing boxes and bottles galore of sunscreen and shampoo, discovering lesser-known brands along the way, her mission expanded. “I wanted to create a space to make it easier for people to find them,” she explained. Edwards launched BLK + GRN in 2017.

    Source: @blkandgrn

What started as a solo operation, with Edwards packing up every order herself from her Maryland home, has grown to a team of six selling more than 90 wares from 71 artisans and counting. Hearing from customers who say ditching toxic products thanks to BLK + GRN has changed their lives keeps Edwards going. So, too, does growing alongside the business owners whose goods the marketplace stocks. “They’ve become family at this point,” she said.
As the site has evolved, Edwards said she’s committed as ever to providing information on cosmetics and creators. There’s a BLK + GRN podcast, a blog and resources such as a list of 20 potentially harmful ingredients you won’t see in products on the site (Edwards recommended printing it out and taking it with you if you shop elsewhere). Social media, too, is a way Edwards and her team hope to spread the word on clean beauty. “We always try to talk to customers wherever they will listen,” she said.
One such discussion is about the higher prices of natural products. Instead of viewing these products as luxury items, Edwards hopes people see buying better ingredients as an investment in health.

    Source: @blkandgrn

“What are you worth? What is your value? Is making that choice now better for your health?” she said. “We try not to tell people what to do. We just want them to think about it, we try to get people to have those conversations.”
Eventually, Edwards said she’d like to establish relationships with more farmers and suppliers of natural ingredients, so she can connect her artisans more directly to the ingredients they use.
She’d also like to start an accelerator program to provide training and capital to Black-owned businesses, which, especially those owned by Black women, are historically underfunded.

Below, check out some of BLK + GRN’s top-selling products. As Edwards pointed out, just because BLK + GRN’s products are made by Black women, that “doesn’t mean they are specifically for melanated skin. Anyone can use them.”  More

How to Look Your Best This Holiday Season

Of all the seasons of the year, the holidays tend to come with a certain pressure to be our best selves. It’s borderline impossible to get into hair stylists after October because so many people want fresh holiday hair, everyone is doing their most effective face masks, and events and parties are filled with our best makeup and outfits. But Rome wasn’t built in a day, and looking and feeling our very best doesn’t necessarily happen overnight (unless you’ve found some miracle face mask you want to share with the group). With a little premeditated preparation, you can stroll into your Thanksgiving (which this year, might be you alone in your apartment—don’t let that stop you!) feeling your absolute best. Here’s how:

    1. Remember to drink a lot of water
I’m usually really good about drinking a lot of water, but when I’m busy with holiday craziness, that all can go out the door without me even realizing it. The season is about enjoying yourself and celebrating, and you should never feel guilty about, that, but making sure you’re staying hydrated can help you recover from some of the not-so-healthy things you’re bound to be enjoying.

    2. Get your skin looking its best
Skincare takes a while to make a difference, so giving yourself a few weeks to up your game is vital if you want to show up to the holidays glowing to the gods. Making sure your skin is hydrated and exfoliated (but not too exfoliated) can make all the difference. If you’re dealing with any acne or congestion, prepping in advance is key. Use your clay masks a few days ahead of any big events (never the night before, as they tend to bring any gunk to the surface), and keep up with your pore strips for clearer, brighter skin.

    3. Treat yourself to a statement-making lipstick
Nothing screams the holidays like a bold lip, and if you don’t have one that you grab every time the holidays roll around, now’s the time. Pick a deep nude, berry, or red that compliments your skintone and rock it all season long. You’ll be surprised at how special it can make you feel, and how much the right shade can brighten up your complexion.

    4. Try loungewear in festive colors
We’re all probably rolling up to the holidays in clothes that are more comfortable than usual, but there’s no reason they can’t be festive too. Let your grey sweats take up space on your back shelf for the season and indulge in some festive loungewear in colors that will make you feel like they’re made for the holidays (bonus points if it’s a matching set).

    5. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep
The holidays come with a lot of commotion, which usually includes a lot less sleep. It isn’t always easy, but making sleep a priority can change how you feel for the entirety of the season. Whether that means sleeping in a little later or trying to get to bed a bit earlier, try to add five minutes of sleep to your night every night for a couple of weeks, and before you know it, you’ll be getting an hour more than you’re used to. It’s impossible to feel your best when you’re super sleepy, so if you prioritize anything, this should be it.

    6. Find a seasonal perfume that you love
There’s nothing like finding a perfume that you absolutely love, and switching it up and finding one that’s winter-appropriate can boost your confidence every single day. Look for warm scents like vanilla, clove, and cedar for a sexy scent perfect for chilly nights spent by the fire.

    Source: @crystalinmarie

    7. Try festive hair accessories
While the easiest way to look festive is definitely a red sweater, #2 is probably a festive hair accessory, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Whether it’s a pearl headband, a velvet scrunchie, a hair bow, gold hair clips, or sparkly bobby pins, it’s a chic, Zoom-approved way to feel put-together when all you’re really wearing is a pair of leggings for the sixth day in a row.

    8. Go for metallics
One of the most complimented eye looks our editors wear is a swipe of a shimmery, metallic gold or silver across the lid. It’s beyond easy—truly, it’s one swipe of eyeshadow with a flat brush, but you can even use your finger—but looks glimmery and festive without the effort of a smokey eye. Swipe the shade all over the upper lid and the inner corner of the eyes, leaving the lower lash line blank for a striking look. Don’t forget to go in with lots of mascara!

    9. Try a new manicure
I know what you’re thinking. How could you ever dare to give up your beloved holiday red? Trust us: OPI’s “Big Apple Red” will be there when you need it, but for now, try something with a little more spunk. Because you’re likely doing your nails at home, it’s a good time to try another festive shade, like emerald green, chocolate brown (think: hot cocoa!), shimmery neutrals, and more. You could also try nail stickers to make your at-home manicure look extra cool.  More
