9 short flight countries to visit from the UAE

    Life

    by Vanessa Gainford

A last-minute trip is much more practical if it’s a short flight, as it avoids losing days to travel and to jet lag.
There are an array of places surrounding the UAE that are just a short flight away, from skiing in Georgia to relaxing in the Seychelles.
9 editor-approved short flight countries to visit from the UAE
    Maldives

The Maldives is a destination that UAE residents commonly book. A four-hour flight takes you to crystal turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and white sand beaches – the ultimate description of paradise. With many Atolls and resorts to choose from, rest assured that wherever your choice, you will be encompassed by luxury and leave feeling like your trip has been longer than just four days.
    Zanzibar, Tanzania

This East African country is enriched in history and is home to Mount Kilimanjaro and is just under a six-hour flight away from the UAE. Zanzibar is a choice for those who want relaxation combined with adventure. Take a safari in the Serengeti National Park or take a boat trip to Prison Island or even just while away the hours with a stroll along Nungwi beach. However you opt to spend your stay, Hakuna Matata will be your new motto.
    Istanbul, Turkey

Just a five-hour flight from Dubai, Istanbul is the perfect place for a city escape. This is a destination for those who like to be on the go as it’s likely you will spend your time in Istanbul eating, as you try local delicacies, and walking as you explore. Visit the Hagia Sophia Mosque and formerly Cathedral to understand the cultural history of the capital or wander the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market to discover what treasures the city has to offer.
    Jordan

Not too far away from the UAE is Jordan. Jordan has many attractions for tourists from a dip in the Dead Sea to visiting ancient ruins. For accommodation, you can relax at a beach resort in Aqaba or stay in a bubble campsite to stargaze before you fall asleep. Jordan is also home to one of the seven wonders of the world, the archaeological site of Petra, which no matter how short your trip is, should not be missed. Best of all? The flight is only three hours.
    Georgia

Black sand beaches to mountain villages, Georgia is increasingly becoming a destination of interest, particularly as it’s just a three-and-a-half-hour flight from the UAE. December to April is the time to book for ski season but the capital of Tbilisi is ideal to explore all year around. The diversity of the old town’s cobbled streets in comparison to the coastal botanical gardens of Batumi and vast landscape of Lake Rica are part of Georgia’s charm.
    Crete, Greece

The largest Greek island of Crete is the closest to the UAE and has so much to offer. The main town of Heraklion is by a harbour with fresh seafood, local eateries and stores embodying Greek life at its finest. If you plan to go now, the cooler weather allows you to explore without worrying about the heat. The cooler weather means you most likely won’t be sunbathing on Elafonisi beach when you visit but you will be able to appreciate the pink sand beach without the masses of tourists. However, as summer is fast approaching it’s also the ideal destination for sun, sand and sea.
    Cairo, Egypt

Situated on the Nile River, Cairo is the largest city in Africa. This destination is for the explorers and history-lovers as just a short while away is Giza, the site of the iconic pyramids and Great Sphinx. A day spent here discovering the ancient Egyptian artwfacts should be followed by an evening trying local delicacies; falafel, mahshi and most importantly karkadeh, a traditional hibiscus tea.
    Seychelles

Another destination in the Indian Ocean is the Seychelles. Similar to the Maldives pristine white sand beaches, yet with the addition of the Morne Seychellois National park. The Seychelles is one of the world’s smallest countries where relaxation goes hand in hand with nature and the preservation of the 115 beautiful islands.
    Oman

Potentially the shortest flight on this list. Oman is just 50 minutes by plane, so saves a four-hour drive and border crossings. Stay in the mountains in Jabal Akhdar where you can abseil or cycle through the mountain ranges. Find a desert camp in a Wadi where you can relax with traditional spa treatments. You will be buried in the sand before enjoying traditional Omani Shuwa. A visit to the capital of Muscat will keep you on your toes as you discover the history of the country.

UAE Residents travel to Europe: Schengen visa applications rise by 20%

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

A significant uptick in Schengen visa applications from UAE residents has been reported by The Visa Services, a leading Dubai-based visa processing expert.
The company’s data reveals a 20% year-over-year increase in Schengen visa requests during the second quarter of 2024, underscoring Europe as a top travel destination for UAE nationals and expatriates.

Europe Reigns Supreme as Travel Destination

Europe captured a dominant 65% share of all travel requests processed by The Visa Services in Q2 2024, with the United States and Asia-Pacific regions following at 25% and 15% respectively. This surge in European travel coincides with a peak tourist season marked by favorable weather conditions and high-profile events such as EURO 2024, the Paris Olympics, and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

Diverse Applicant Base and Changing Visa Trends

The Visa Services caters to a diverse clientele, with Russians constituting the largest group of applicants at 35%, followed by Indians at 23%. Filipinos, Egyptians, Jordanians, and South Africans also represent significant segments of the applicant pool. Notably, families account for a substantial 58% of visa inquiries.

While the processing time for most Schengen visas is within 15 days, certain countries may extend this period to 45 days. The company reported a 22.44% rejection rate for Schengen visa applications from UAE residents in 2023, with a corresponding 77.56% approval rate.

A notable shift in visa trends has emerged in 2024. While single-entry visas dominated in 2023, this year has witnessed a growing preference for longer validity periods. Currently, 45% of visas issued are valid for 3-6 months, while 30% extend beyond a year. Travel remains the primary purpose for visa acquisition, accounting for 70% of applications, followed by business, study, and medical reasons.

    The Visa Services

The company’s impressive growth, marked by a tripling of completed applications in the past year, aligns with the broader expansion of outbound tourism from the GCC region. The Visa Services’ success is attributed to its reliability, expertise, and ability to meet the evolving needs of its diverse clientele.

As the GCC travel and tourism market is projected to reach $75.64 billion by the end of 2024 and $181.48 billion by 2036, The Visa Services is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for visa services in the region.

In a bold move set to redefine global air travel, Dubai’s visionary leadership has unveiled plans for the transformation of Al Maktoum International Airport (AMI) into the world’s largest aviation hub.
Spearheaded by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the ambitious project promises to revolutionize the way millions of passengers navigate the skies.

    — HH Sheikh Mohammed (@HHShkMohd) April 28, 2024

With approval granted for the cutting-edge designs of a new passenger terminal, AMI is poised to accommodate over 260 million travelers annually, surpassing all existing records for airport capacity. Boasting five state-of-the-art terminals and more than 400 aircraft gates, the expansive facility will cover a sprawling 70 square kilometers in Dubai South.
Construction has already commenced on the Dhs128 million terminal, with completion of the initial phase expected within a decade. Upon its inauguration, the terminal will boast an impressive capacity of 150 million passengers annually, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s evolution.
Anticipating a seamless transition, all operations currently housed at Dubai International Airport (DXB), the world’s busiest international airport, will gradually migrate to AMI in the coming years, according to announcements from the Dubai Media Office.
Beyond its sheer scale, AMI is envisioned as a beacon of sustainability, designed to minimize environmental impact and align with the UAE’s commitment to eco-conscious development. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, emphasized the airport’s pursuit of a LEED Gold certification, underscoring its dedication to environmentally responsible practices.
Expanding beyond aviation, the development of AMI signals a broader vision for Dubai South, set to become a thriving metropolis accommodating a million residents and hosting leading companies in logistics and air transport. Reflecting on the significance of this endeavor, HH Sheikh Mohammed emphasized its enduring legacy for future generations, ensuring sustained growth and prosperity for Dubai as a global powerhouse in aviation, commerce, and urban innovation.
