Eid Al-Adha dates are out: 4-day long weekend for UAE residents

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Saudi Arabia officially confirms the sighting of the crescent Moon, marking the commencement of Dhul Hijjah, the final month in the Islamic lunar calendar. With that, we finally have the dates for the Eid al-Adha break.
This announcement is pivotal for Muslims globally, especially those in the UAE, as it sets the dates for Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha, two of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar.

#UAE_Cabinet approves official holidays calendar for government and private sectors for year 2024 pic.twitter.com/HHtIQawNy8
    — UAEGOV (@UAEmediaoffice) November 21, 2023

    Public Holidays in the UAE
In alignment with these religious observances, the UAE government has announced public holidays for its residents. Citizens and residents will observe a day off for Arafah Day on June 15, followed by a three-day break for Eid Al Adha from June 16 to June 18. This extended holiday offers an opportunity for families to come together, perform religious rituals, and engage in communal celebrations.
    Commencement of Dhul Hijjah
The sighting of the crescent Moon on Thursday, June 6, signified the end of Dhul Qa’adah and the beginning of Dhul Hijjah on Friday, June 7. Dhul Hijjah holds immense importance for Muslims, being the month of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, and the celebration of Eid Al Adha.
Significance of Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha
Arafah Day, which is the pinnacle of the Hajj pilgrimage, will be observed on Saturday, June 15. This day is revered as the holiest in Islam, where pilgrims gather on the plains of Arafat to perform prayers and seek forgiveness. For Muslims not on pilgrimage, it is a day of fasting and reflection.
Following Arafah Day, Eid Al Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” will be celebrated on Sunday, June 16. This festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. The act of Qurbani (sacrifice) is performed, where livestock is slaughtered, and the meat is distributed among family, friends, and the needy.
    Celebrations and Traditions
Eid Al-Adha in the UAE is marked by a series of traditions and communal activities. The holiday begins with a special prayer service held at mosques and open spaces across the country. Following the prayers, the ritual of animal sacrifice is performed, reflecting the story of Prophet Ibrahim. The meat from the sacrifice is then distributed, ensuring that everyone, including the less fortunate, can partake in the celebrations.
Additionally, the UAE sees various cultural and recreational events during Eid. Malls, parks, and public spaces host activities and entertainment for families, enhancing the festive spirit. Traditional Emirati dishes are prepared, and the exchange of gifts among family and friends is common.
A Time for Reflection and Charity
Eid Al Adha is also a time for reflection and charity. Many in the UAE use the Eid Al-Adha period to engage in charitable acts, such as donating to those in need and supporting various humanitarian causes. This spirit of giving aligns with the values of compassion and generosity that are central to the festival.
As the UAE prepares for these significant dates, the nation looks forward to a period of spiritual renewal, familial bonding, and communal harmony. The confirmation of the crescent Moon sighting and the subsequent announcements have set the stage for a memorable and meaningful Eid Al Adha 2024.

How Terra Eatery has become a retreat in the heart of UAE

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

Restaurateur Rashed Al Tayer, founder of Terra Eatery, on creating a locally grown haven that nourishes mind, body and soul.
With an aim to create a retreat from the buzzing city. The restaurant offers a redefined culinary experience and takes pride in using only the finest sourced produce from across the globe to prepare each dish served.

    Talk us through your background.
During my time at university whilst studying finance in San Diego, I spent some time travelling, dining out and immersing myself in diverse culinary experiences, from touring coffee roasters in California to homegrown concepts in Greece that focused on fresh and local produce. This left a lasting impression on me and inspired me to craft a new style of relaxed yet elevated dining concepts bringing them to the region. After returning to Dubai, I embarked on a professional journey in real estate alongside my family for some time but felt compelled to explore bringing a new style of F&B concepts to the local scene, giving me a chance to showcase my creativity and gauge my ability to craft innovative concepts inspired by what I had seen during my university days.
The contemporary restaurant redefines Mediterranean cooking – talk us through the concept.
At Terra, we embrace coastal-inspired Mediterranean plates that championingredients as the stars of each dish. We prioritise the use of premium and locallysourced ingredients, ensuring that each dish undergoes meticulous tastings and adjustments before earning its place on our menu. Embracing the ethos of seasonality, we periodically refresh key dishes to reflect the freshest produce available.

Terra Eatery beautifully captures local flavours – tell us more.
As an Emirati and the owner of a homegrown business, it is important for me to support other local businesses where I can. Prioritising local produce, andcollaborating with homegrown architects and designers to infuse authenticity intoevery aspect of the dining experience is of utmost importance to me.

“Attention to detail is everything, Terra was designed to offer upscale cuisine in awarm and welcoming environment”

What are some of the key dishes to try at the restaurant?
For lunch or dinner, the Spicy Prawns are my all-time favourite as well as The French beans salad – simple yet fresh and flavourful and as for the pastas, the Short Rib Pappardelle – all of our pastas are made in-house which adds a special touch. For breakfast, all are my favourites but my go -to is the Menemen with sumac yoghurt, onion and capsicums or Frittata.
The restaurant is known for its beautifully crafted interiors – what was the creative process behind the space?
I envisioned a restaurant influenced by the Mediterranean, my personal favourite culinary region. A nestled haven where comfort, inspiration, and relaxation come together. The design of Terra is a testament to attention to detail, with rustic open kitchens, earthy hand-finished clay walls, Italian artisan tiles, reclaimed wood, linen fabrics, and lush green foliage bringing an inviting indoor-outdoor southern European courtyard feel to the dining experience.
The concept has been selected for the MichelinGuide Abu Dhabi 2024 – how does itfeel?
Receiving recognition and awards for our efforts is immensely gratifying – it validates the hard work and dedication we’ve poured into our craft which is particularly rewarding.
Everything at Terra Eatery embodies fine attention-to-detail – how important was this from the outset?
Attention to detail is everything, the restaurant was designed to offer upscale cuisine in a warm and welcoming environment. The customer profile at Terra is the everyday person who appreciates authenticity, honesty, and attention.

How has travel influenced ideation through the restaurant?
Massively! My love for the Mediterranean coast majorly influences me, as I travel there often. The ambiance, music, and cuisine at Terra are all imbued with theessence of that region.

This is The Body Issue – what are your nonnegotiable self and body care practices?
I believe that what you consume, your environment, and physical activity all contribute to self-care and overall well-being. To maintain balance, I incorporate a variety of workouts such as Pilates, cycling, and stretching into my routine. Additionally, I prioritise nourishing my body with balanced, highquality meals from places that not only inspire me but also provide a positive feel to the dining experience.

Run don’t walk: Netflix just dropped the first look of Emily in Paris Season 4

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Emily in Paris Returns: Fashion gets bolder, love Gets Messier in Season 4.

Calling all Francophiles and hopeless romantics, Netflix has unveiled a first look at the highly-anticipated season 4 of “Emily in Paris,” the Darren Star comedy that’s equal parts fashion inspiration and Parisian escapism.
All the BTS shots from Emily in Paris S4

A Recap of Emily’s Parisian Adventures (So Far)
For those new to the show, the first three seasons follow Emily Cooper, a young American marketing executive who lands her dream job at a Parisian firm. What unfolds is a whirlwind of cultural clashes, career challenges, and of course, a whole lot of love triangles.
Emily navigates the chic world of Parisian fashion while struggling to master the language and customs. She develops close friendships with her colleagues, particularly Mindy, an aspiring singer, and clashes (but secretly admires) her sophisticated boss, Sylvie.
The biggest drama, however, revolves around Emily’s love life. Torn between the charming chef Gabriel, her downstairs neighbor, and the kind Brit, Alfie, Emily’s heart (and loyalties) are constantly tested.
What to Expect in Season 4
Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger, with Emily caught between her feelings for Gabriel and Alfie, further complicated by the news of Gabriel’s ex, Camille, expecting his baby.
The first look photos for season 4 hint at a bolder Emily, both in terms of her personality and her fashion choices. Costume designer Marylin Fitoussi promises a “reinterpretation of Parisian fashion codes” with Emily taking more risks and asserting her own unique style.
The synopsis offers a glimpse into the upcoming chaos: Emily wrestles with her feelings for Gabriel while he prepares for fatherhood, Sylvie faces a personal dilemma, and Mindy’s band scrambles for funds for Eurovision. Underlying it all is the undeniable chemistry between Emily and Gabriel, but with secrets threatening to derail everything.
    A Season Split in Two
“Emily in Paris” season 4 will be a double feature, premiering in two parts. Part 1 arrives on August 15, 2024, followed by Part 2 on September 12, 2024. So, get ready to binge-watch, ooh la la at the fashion, and gasp at the inevitable romantic entanglements that await Emily in the City of Lights.
