Juggling Business and Friendship: 4 Tips for Navigating Working with Friends

Working alongside my best friend is a joy that I sincerely treasure. It’s like having the freedom to ease into the day without the morning rush! Our meetings? They feel more like strategizing our next Netflix binge and trusting her with the big decisions feels as natural as breathing. But don’t get it twisted—it’s not all fun and games. Working with friends doesn’t come without challenges.
My best friend and I started a new business together, and while we share the same vision for it, we’re definitely not the same person. As we’ve grown as individuals and as professionals, we’ve had to adapt regularly and continue to learn alongside one another—in both business and life. This has come with its own set of surprises, and trust me, they’re not always the fun kind. Thankfully, we’ve learned how to weave friendship and business and find the perfect balance over time. So, whether you’re navigating the corporate world with your best friend or in business together, I’m sharing my best advice for working with friends.
Set clear boundaries from the start
Setting clear lines between your work and personal lives is the first (and arguably the most important) thing you should do. How you spend your time together has to be intentional—whether you’re working on a new proposal in the office or laughing over wine on the weekends. They both serve their purpose, but each needs to have separate time and space dedicated to them.
Defining clear work hours (specific times when you are working together or even talking about work) can help you respect each other’s time and personal commitments. For example, don’t call your friend to talk about work on the weekend when she has friends in town. Using different communication tools for work and personal chats can help with this. Slack or email can be used for work, while texts or social media can be used for personal interactions. The line between work and life can easily get blurry when these cross.
Similarly, try not to solely talk about work all night long when you’re with the rest of your girlfriends. They won’t be in on the tea, and it can make others feel a little left out. We get it, you work together. Save it for Monday!
Don’t be afraid to have hard conversations
Put on your big girl panties because shit can get real when you are working with friends. Tough talks? They’re the secret sauce to a no-nonsense relationship—inside and outside of work. Don’t tip-toe around hard-to-tackle topics like how your working relationship is going.
To discuss tough topics without drifting into personal territory, my best friend and I schedule chats as needed to talk through any work-related issues we are running into together. We come prepared with points to cover so we can stay focused on the issue at hand. This, along with avoiding placing blame on one another, helps keep our friendship and professional respect intact, ensuring no bad blood spills over. If the air starts to feel heavy or misaligned, we take a step back and have a true heart-to-heart, so we can get to the bottom of what’s really going on. Did someone cross a boundary? Are we actually just upset because of something that happened outside of work?
At the end of the day, you know your friend well, and if something is bothering them or making their life hard, whether it’s work-related or not, you usually know something is off. Don’t ignore that instinct or sweep issues under the rug out of fear of ruffling feathers. It’ll only affect your work and friendship negatively.
Don’t let their work drama become your work drama
No matter where you work, how many people you work with, or how strong your company culture is, there is always a little bit of work drama circulating. Not everyone is going to work well together or like each other—and that’s OK! However, taking sides or getting in the middle of a problem your friend might be having in the workplace is never a good idea.

Be mindful to not let your personal loyalty interfere with your other relationships in the workplace.

For example, if your friend is upset with a colleague you both interact with about something that happened during a meeting (let’s say they shot down her idea and talked down to her), she will probably march right over to your desk (or slack call you) post-meeting to vent about it. As a friend, you should listen to them. But as a fellow colleague, you should not get involved or let that affect your working relationship with said colleague. Even if you want to protect your friend and stick up for them, it’s best to stay out of it. You can’t let their work drama become yours (and vice versa).
Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t give them advice on the situation or support them if they’re angry or upset. You just need to be mindful to not let your personal loyalty interfere with your other relationships in the workplace (or your professional reputation). And remember, this goes both ways.
    Leverage each other’s strengths
My best friend is the yin to my yang. At work, I dream big, and she zeroes in on the details. With this in mind, recognizing what each of us brings to the table and capitalizing on our individual strengths helps fuel our joint goals. Whether you work together on projects all the time at work or you’re on separate teams in the same building, count on each other for support and share your strengths! For example, let’s say you’re better with the vision rather than the details, but you really need help nailing down a timeline for a project. You should look to your friend, who is more numbers-driven, to help you nail down the logistics!
For business owners like us, this is especially beneficial, but there are countless ways you can play off of each other’s strengths in the workplace. Ask them questions, go to them for advice in areas they excel in and could help you with, and ask if they see any areas where you could be better or develop new skills. Asking a friend where you could improve is much less intimidating than asking a higher-up. Plus, they’re more likely to give you tough love when you need it. No matter your working relationship, identifying each other’s strengths and leaning on one another in the workplace can be incredibly rewarding.
    Don’t compare or compete
It’s hard to watch a co-worker get an opportunity you wanted (like a promotion or a client), but it’s even harder when that co-worker is your close friend. Sure, you’re happy for them, but celebrating their big win stings a little. Whether you’ve experienced this already or not, know that you’re not a bad person if you’re not *so excited* for them. But with that said, you do have to be careful not to compare yourself to them. Just like there will be areas where you excel a little more, there will be areas that they exceed in, too. That’s just a part of life!
Comparison and competition, inside and outside of the workplace, can lead to envy and resentment, which are all things that can be detrimental to your personal relationship. If this happens to you, odds are that your friend feels a little weird knowing you were hoping for the same win. Find it in you to truly congratulate them and set your sights on your next big thing. And if the roles are reversed, be understanding if they dip out of your celebratory happy hour a little early. Your job, as friends, is to root for each other, so don’t get caught up in who has the “upper hand” in the workplace.

Your job, as friends, is to root for each other, so don’t get caught up in who has the “upper hand” in the workplace.

    Trust each other
Zig Ziglar said it best when he said, “If people like you, they will listen to you. But if people trust you, they will do business with you.” In a cutthroat world, knowing someone’s always in your corner is the ultimate power-up, especially for women. When working with friends, respect, empathy, transparency, understanding, and trust are vital. These are the pillars you’ll lean on when things get tough. Thankfully, friendships have these as a foundation already, so bringing them into the workplace can only benefit you both.
To benefit from these things at work, be open about your thoughts, feelings, and expectations to prevent misunderstandings and reinforce trust. For example, if you feel like your friend hasn’t been prioritizing certain projects at work and it’s putting more on your plate, you need to be honest about that with them. Or, if you are feeling burnt out, let them know. They might be able to help you develop better productivity habits. Opening this door of communication will make you both less likely to think the other is slacking off or disrespecting your time, especially if you’re working on a shared goal.
    Final thoughts
Working with friends requires a blend of tough love, boundaries, and a whole lot of trust. While we’re not always perfect at doing these things, my best friend and I have been able to not just survive the workplace but thrive, too. Whether you’re building an empire or your desks are next to each other at a start-up, continue to be intentional and prioritize both your working relationship and personal relationship. Sometimes, they will overlap—but as long as you respect each other, you can become even closer and grow in your careers. And what’s better than reaching your goals and following your dreams alongside your friends? The hard work, crazy moments, tough talks, emotional rollercoasters, and everything in between are all worth it. More

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

This week, Emirates Woman spoke to Elza Wandler, founder of the incredibly luxe leather bag and accessory brand, Wandler.
Welcome to the Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and business women both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome.
Elza Wandler’s namesake brand, Wandler has solidified its status as an A-lister favourite, street style staple and innovative newcomer in the fashion industry.
THE OUTNET now has an exclusive, upcycled capsule in partnership luxury leather goods brand, Wandler. This exclusive 16-piece collection focuses on beautifully crafted leather handbags and shoes. Her namesake brand is committed to redefining craftsmanship, with an expertise and passion in leather, with the capsule being a true reflection of Wandler’s visual identity and message.
From playful mini and crossbody bags made with responsibly sourced leather of the highest quality, the collection will be available globally on The Outnet from today, June 25, 2024.
To delve into her journey more, Emirates Woman understood how it all began and learned about how Wandler innovates season after season.
    What was your first job?
My very first job, when I was about 14-15 years old, was working in the blueberry fields in my town. It taught me the value of hard work from an early age. During high school, I worked at a fashion boutique, which sparked my interest in the fashion industry. However, it was through my official first job after my studies that I really learned what it took to build a brand. As a designer for the ‘Made & Crafted’ line at Levi’s, I saw the entire spectrum from sourcing materials and branding to marketing and sales. It was an invaluable learning experience that provided me with the right tools to understand what is needed to build a fashion brand.

What inspired you to launch Wandler?
I always wanted to have my own brand. I started with handbags because I love their sculptural and architectural qualities. Their bold shapes and colours are my canvas to play with.
What are the key elements of your role?
As the founder and creative director, I am involved in every aspect of the brand. I work closely with my team on designing the collections, branding, and content creation, overseeing production, managing business operations, and ensuring that our brand vision is consistently represented.
Talk us through your daily routine.
I start my morning by waking up and drinking lemon water with sea salt. Then, I practice mindfulness and write half a page of notes in my notebook. After that, I get my daily coffee from a place around the corner and walk to the office, which is just a five-minute walk from my home. I love that I can walk to work. No day is the same in the office, and since I travel a lot for work, I try to savour the moments when I’m there. I begin the day with meetings with my team, including content brainstorms and planning sessions, working on new designs, and doing research for upcoming collections. In between, I walk my dogs, which is the perfect excuse to go outside and get some fresh air. To wind down, I love to cook if I have time, take a yin yoga class, read a book before bed, and go to bed early to prepare for the next day.
What are some of the pieces the brand sells?
Wandler is known for its high-quality Italian-made handbags, bold in shape and colour, each named after people who inspire me, including family and friends. The Hortensia bag, named after my mother-in-law in honour of her, is the first and most recognizable shape for the brand. It gained recognition when Lady Gaga wore it during Pride, it was just 3 months after launching the brand in stores. That was an insane moment. Other popular styles include the Carly Mini, named after my best friend in high school, and the Georgia, named after stylist and friend Georgia Tall. These two styles will be reintroduced in THE OUTNET capsule, which I am very excited about. Handbags are the core of our business, but we have also expanded into the footwear category. The most popular style in this category is the Isa family, which has been worn by celebrities like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, and Beyoncé.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?
My advice would be to stay true to your vision and not be afraid to take risks. The fashion industry is very competitive, so it’s important to differentiate yourself and offer something unique. Also, be prepared to work hard and stay resilient, as there will be challenges along the way.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received? And what is the worst?
The best piece of advice I ever received was to trust my instincts and believe in my creative vision. On the other hand, the worst advice was to play it safe and stick to conventional designs. Authenticity and creativity are what drive the fashion industry forward.
What has been the biggest challenge you had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges was establishing the brand in a crowded market. It took a lot of persistence and hard work to get our name out there and build a loyal customer base. Managing the rapid growth of the company while maintaining our quality and vision has been a challenge, but it’s also very rewarding if you keep fighting for the best outcome possible. In the end, my drive to create my own world is the reason why I do this, and that passion has helped me overcome many obstacles along the way.

How does it feel to have launched on THE OUTNET – tell us more.
It feels incredible to have launched on THE OUTNET. This partnership allows us to bring our beloved styles back to life and offer them to a wider audience. THE OUTNET’s platform gives customers the freedom to explore and appreciate our designs at their own pace. I’m thrilled to see our archived styles reimagined in new colours and to continue our commitment to sustainability by utilizing stock leather. We’re excited about the opportunities this collaboration brings.
What are your goals for the future?
Looking ahead, we aim to continue growing the brand while staying true to our core values of quality, craftsmanship, and with a strong emphasis on colour. Accessories will always be at the core of what we do, but we want to continue to build the Wandler world beyond that. We envision crossovers with interior design and the art world, something I can’t wait to explore more in the coming years.

Travelling for summer? Here’s how to maintain a fitness routine

With travelling on the horizon again for summer, maintaining a fitness routine during these months becomes of utmost importance.
The UAE-based fitness expert, Jackson Litchfield is an internationally renowned health and fitness coach who is passionate about helping his clients to a happier and healthier lifestyle. With a slew of certificates and trainings under his belt, Jackson has been able to deliver great results as well as full control of health and fitness for his clients.
Overall, Summer can also be a great time to focus on fitness due to the longer days and often more flexible schedules.
To delve into this, Emirates Woman & Emirates Man spoke to Litchfield to discuss all the wellness elements to keep in mind for carving out a summer body.
What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine?
The first 30 minutes of my day are easily the most important as they predictably put me in a peak state to serve. I like to break it up into three components spending ten minutes on each. It should be for the Soul, Spirit, Body and Mind. Overall, the sequence is very important as the first ten minutes are for the spirit and soul for priming, three minutes are to list what I’m grateful for, three minutes are for pure breath work to be in the present moment, then three minutes are for letting my imagination create what could happen if I was my best self.
This 10 minutes is dedicated to giving my body the nutrients it needs to thrive, with protein and fats, bone broth and Sauerkraut for gut health and Supplements which include Zinc, Multi, omega 3, curcumin, PQQ for overall health. Then I go over all the technical side of my day ie clients programs, my training, education, recovery, and general matters to take of. I generally prioritise the most critical tasks first and then work backwards. When energy is the highest, it makes sense to undertake the tasks that carry the most relevance.
What is the daily schedule for you as a health coach? What do your training sessions consist of?
I begin my day at 4am, with a morning ritual outline for one hour. Then my PT sessions take place from 5pm to 12pm, followed by training, studying, blog writing and content production until 3PM. I then schedule time in for an online PT check in or an in person PT session. I end the day with some social interaction, meditation, prayer and play from 6pm to 8pm. Overall the main theme is individualised programming and constant progress. With all clients I do Bi weekly check ins to ensure that we are on track to achieve the results we are after whilst making the necessary changes to make it happen. I like to look at 4 main pillars when it comes to designing any regime., which include Body composition, Health markers, Mindset and cognitive function and Performance levels.
Diet is an important part of any fitness routine; tell us about your overall diet?
My diet at any one given time is typically reversed engineered to an outcome ie drop body fat, enhance brain function, increase energy and longevity foundations. I am always passionately experimenting with new protocols to see what works and perhaps discover new methods of eating that can lead to heightened results. So as you can imagine that will slightly change how I distribute things like calories, macronutrients, micronutrients, meal timing. My typical baseline looks like me having my first meal at 4:15am with Bone Broth, Animal protein on rotation, Good fats on rotation, Seasonal vegetables and Sauerkraut. My second meal is at 12pm and includes Animal protein on rotation (large serving), Good fats on rotation, Seasonal vegetables and Sauerkraut.
I then fast for the rest of the day. I like to eat early as I have found it highly complementary to bodies natural rhythms ie hormones, neurotransmitters and digestion, it also does wonders for sleep too. In addition, I classify light exposure as apart of my diet as it contributes towards the production and function of energy within the body. So, I must add grounding and viewing sunlight at sunrise + sunset as a core staple in the entirety of it all.
With a busy schedule and always being on the go – how do you unwind on a daily basis?
One of the things I’m grateful for is choosing a career that I’m passionate about. This makes it easier to embrace a busy schedule as I am working and living in accordance to my highest values. As I am organically energised and satiated on a soul level for the most part, I prioritse meditation and reading, which means I’m either looking to give the body time to connect and reset or I’m feeding the mind with new ideas and insights.
What’s the biggest myth you’ve seen when it comes to exercising?
Without question it would be thinking that results are achieved mostly from just hard work. I’ve seen countless amounts of people put in the hard yards day after day for years and get very little return. The best results are always at the intersect of a great strategy and hard work. If you increase one without the other, the outcome will most likely fall short of expectations. When thinking about progress, consider implementing an elaborate strategy and an elevated effort equally.
Cellular health plays a key role in optimal anti aging – tell us more.
In a nutshell, Cells are the basic building blocks of the body. Our cells are programmed to divide, multiply, and then go on to perform basic biological functions that keep us healthy and alive across time. But over time the more cells divide, the older and more damaged they become. In turn, cells eventually lose their ability to regenerate and perform coherently within the body. The real genius is the race to understand what plausible interventions can actually impact the life of a cell and subsequently slow down the biological aging process (with some experts even suggesting we can reverse it)
I am most definitely on the side of believing that we will inevitably be able to enhance and reverse aging via discoveries and advancements in cellular health. The areas that offer the most promise in my opinion are Cellular nutrition, Photobiomodulation, Quantum biology, Detoxification strategies, Water , Geographical locations and their properties.

Our modern lifestyle can drastically affect our posture – how does this work?
Issues with posture these days are most likely the norm and not the exception. There are a few main reasons why this is the case Alignment is probably the most predictable and easy to assume. This comes from sitting down all day which essentially shortens the hip flexors, brings the shoulders forward and sometimes even causes the next to tilt forward over time. The good news is, posture can be restored faster than most people know. By using Targeted strength training, precision stretching, a nutrient dense diet for bone, tendon, ligament formation, focused breath work or meditation and Vitamin D via sunlight can all help contribute to a better posture.
Many people believe in calorie counting – could you elaborate?
There are many ways to unpack that question, so I’ll try come at it from a practical angle. The term calorie counting is generally referred to in relation to weight loss. For instance most people by now are familiar with the “golden rule” which is, Calories in vs calories out. Where a tilt in either side of the equation will lead to weight loss or weight gain depending on the level of inputs.
To begin with honouring an energy balance equation successfully will lead to weight loss and or weight gain depending on what the person is looking to achieve. Many people believe that maintaining a calorie deficit boils down to nothing more than sheer willpower. If you’re disciplined enough, you’ll succeed; if you’re not, then you’re bound to fall off the wagon. However, nothing about this way of thinking takes into account the highly complex, beautifully intricate systems that our bodies operate on.
It overlooks the many factors—both internal and external—that influence our eating habits, energy levels, and overall health. Being unable to maintain a diet usually isn’t about a lack of desire or will. It’s not a personal failure . Instead, it’s often a sign that the approach might have been missing important elements of preparation and proper support. Weight loss, especially sustainable weight loss, isn’t a solo journey, and it isn’t a straightforward path. It requires a deeper understanding of your body’s needs, a recognition of the psychological aspects of eating, and, most importantly, an acknowledgment that sometimes, we need a bit more than a calorie counter app to get us through and lead us to success. The key isn’t only about focusing on eating less and moving more in a generic sense but about a whole-body approach that addresses our unique physical requirements, our environment, and our psychological well-being.
Building muscle takes immense discipline – tell us more.
It definitely requires intense discipline with the addition of a well formulated strategy. Building muscle goes way beyond just working hard in the gym. To give a basic insight, I believe there are three main phases to muscle building that require significant energy and preparation, the first half includes preperation where the body must be in a state of nourishment and good health in order to be ready to take on the stress of muscle building training. The second half includes a push where training must be performed at a high intensity with immaculate technical execution in order to create a successful response and the third part includes repair, where the body must be adequately rested and nourished in order to recover and be in a state to perform again at a higher level. This cycle is repeated over and over until ideal muscle mass is achieved.
This is ‘The Body Issue’ – what are your non-negotiable self and body care practices.
The most important self-care practices include loving relationships, Sunlight and grounding, a nutrient dense diet, prayer and meditation, movement and contributing to something greater than myself.

10 things to avoid during the hottest summer months in the UAE for safety

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

The UAE summer sun is no joke. With temperatures soaring past 40°C, staying safe becomes a top priority.
Here’s a guide on what not to do during the hottest months, along with some UAE-specific suggestions to keep you cool:

    Don’t underestimate the sun’s power
While a tan might look nice, sunburn is a recipe for discomfort and dehydration. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Look for fabrics with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating for added sun protection.
    Don’t forget the SPF
Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher liberally and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget areas like your ears, lips, and the tops of your feet.
    Don’t skip hydration

Dehydration is a major risk in extreme heat. Carry a reusable water bottle and sip on cool water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and excessive caffeine, which can dehydrate you further. Electrolyte-rich beverages can be helpful, especially after sweating a lot.
Don’t push yourself outdoors during peak heat
The UAE offers a vibrant nightlife and a plethora of air-conditioned indoor attractions. Plan outdoor activities for early mornings or evenings when temperatures are milder. Malls, museums, and even indoor ski slopes at Ski Dubai offer cool escapes from the scorching sun.
Don’t leave children or pets in parked cars
This one seems obvious, but even a few minutes in a sweltering car can be deadly.
    Don’t ignore heatstroke symptoms
Headache, dizziness, nausea, and excessive sweating are all signs of heatstroke. If you experience them, move to a cool, shaded area, loosen clothing, sip cool water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
Don’t rely solely on air conditioning
While AC is a lifesaver, constantly going from extreme heat to icy-cold interiors can strain your body. Opt for natural ventilation whenever possible and take breaks from the AC to adjust your body temperature gradually.
    Don’t forget about your head
A wide-brimmed hat shields your face, neck, and head from the harsh sun. Opt for breathable, lightweight materials like straw or cotton.
    Don’t disregard cultural norms
Dress modestly when outdoors, especially in more conservative areas. This will not only keep you cool but also show respect for local customs.
Don’t be afraid to embrace the indoors
The UAE boasts some of the world’s most impressive malls and indoor entertainment complexes. Embrace the air conditioning and explore a myriad of shops, restaurants, theme parks, and cultural attractions that are specifically designed to keep you cool and entertained during the summer months.
By following these simple tips, you can stay safe, prevent heat-related illnesses, and enjoy a pleasant summer in the UAE.
