5 facts to know about Emirati content creator Khalid Al Ameri

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

Emirati content creator Khalid Al Ameri is an avid storyteller.
Having cultivated an impressive online following for himself over the years, Khalid Al Ameri has shared many important messages with his audience.
Some of his most popular videos are about growing up in a multicultural household, his mother is from the UK and his father is Emirati, his son’s autism, sharing an insight into how the UAE handled the COVID-19 pandemic.
Delving behind the lens of the camera, here’s a few facts you may not know about this hugely popular content creator.
He completed his MBA at Stanford University

After having graduated from high school at the American International School in Abu Dhabi, Khalid, later on went to complete his MBA at Stanford University in Business Administration. However, he discovered his passions lay elsewhere in storytelling. Doing a complete 180 from his MBA, Khalid moved into the journalism field and eventually landed a role as CNN’s Middle Eastern Correspondent.
He’s known for his selfless acts

From volunteering in schools around the world as part of Dubai Cares’ imitative to performing good deeds around the country. Khalid is known for spreading positivity and awareness through his selfless acts, including earlier last year when he took a video on YouTube explaining the concept of a Balikbayan box, where several household items are sent back home on behalf of residents of the Philippines. He also gave his housekeeper, Leila, a surprise with the box and a ticket to visit her family.
His goal through content creation is to bring people together

From laying emphasis on co-existing without conflict to sharing experiences that encourage one another, Khalid is always spreading love and awareness about serious issues. By also running a Facebook group entitled ‘Khalid’s World Group’, participating members are encouraged to share their experiences and see how they can help each other accordingly.
    He has a Scottish mother

Having grown up in a multicultural household, Khalid is half Emirati, half Scottish. However, having grown up in the UAE, holding a UAE passport and having worked for UAE Government entities, he sees himself as “100 per cent Emirati”.
In a column for The National, he said, “My mother is British and I love her – however, I am 100 percent Emirati. It is all I have ever known; it’s the country I love and work for every day. So how different am I? I don’t think I’m that different at all.”
He reached new heights earlier this year

Having garnered a massive fan base from making lighthearted and humorous videos with his wife Salama, the couple reached new heights (quite literally) at the beginning of this year. In January of this year, Khalid announced the exciting news that he and Salama had “TikTok’d [their] way to the Burj Khalifa” to his 1.2 million followers.
“Can’t believe it,” he said of the opportunity. “Thank you [TikTok Arab creators] for the incredible opportunity and all of the support you have given our work, we are so excited for the year ahead and all the stories we are going to tell together.”

Travelling to Sri Lanka this summer? EW’s guide to the tropical paradise

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Sri Lanka: A solo sojourn and a sudden sense of serenity.

On the precipice of thirty, a decade of group vacations and family getaways began to feel like a well-worn comfort blanket. It was time to shed the cocoon and spread my wings, or at least my passport. Sri Lanka, with its promise of ancient ruins, lush landscapes, and a laid-back vibe, seemed the perfect antidote to the impending existential crisis.
    The Stay

Ahu Bay, a Reverie resort nestled on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, is more than just a hotel; it’s a philosophy. Part of Resplendent Ceylon’s collection, it embodies the brand’s commitment to slow living and mindful exploration. This is a place where time stands still, inviting guests to disconnect from the world and reconnect with themselves.
Ahu Bay, a coastal gem on the island’s southern tip, was my chosen sanctuary. It’s the kind of place where time dilates and worries evaporate like morning mist. The resort is a masterclass in understated luxury, blending seamlessly into its natural surroundings.
    The Accommodation

My suite, a private oasis with a plunge pool that begged for champagne breakfasts, was the perfect base for my solitary explorations. The staff, with their warm smiles and impeccable service, transformed the experience from a solo sojourn into a pampered retreat.
    The Dining

And then there was the food. My first night on the property, I was whisked away to the private beach for a solo date night under the moon light. As a coastal kid from Goa, I was coloured impressed at the array of local seafood I was presented with. A symphony of flavours in my mouth, each dish a testament to the island’s culinary heritage.
As the days turned into a week, a sense of calm washed over me. The kind of calm that comes from spending hours lost in a book, the gentle lull of waves as a soundtrack, and the knowledge that the only company you need is your own.
Leaving felt like bidding farewell to an old friend.

What to pack for a summer in Sri Lanka:
Thinking of escaping the Dubai heat for a week in this coastal paradise? Let EW help you decide what to bring along.

World Oyster Day: 5 restaurants to savour this delicacy in Dubai

    Life

    by Sarah Joseph

Each of these Oyster worthy restaurants has built a loyal following among seafood aficionados in the city.
With Dubai being known as the land for Caviar and Oysters, there’s no dearth of fine-dining restaurants providing the same.
As a much-loved delicacy since ancient times, Oysters have gained a badge of prestige when served at the dinner table.
    The History
As oysters grow in shallow waters and could be easily picked up, it was easier to collect oysters and shellfish than to hunt for meat. Over a decade ago, archaeologists exploring a cave in South Africa uncovered evidence of shellfish dinners enjoyed by humans from 164,000 years ago. This demonstrates how early of a role oysters played in early society and survival. Oysters were a delicacy for the wealthy class during the Greek (13th-9th BCE) and Roman empires (8th BCE-5th AD). They were so important to the Greeks that the Greek became the first to cultivate oysters. It then became an important part of the process, that the shell of oysters were even used to cast ballots in the voting process.
    In modern cuisine
Today, oysters are a beloved food item all over the world. They are enjoyed in a variety of dishes, from raw oysters on the half shell to grilled oysters with garlic butter. They are also a popular ingredient in seafood stews and chowders and are often used to add flavour to other dishes.
    How did it begin?

World Oyster Day, celebrated annually on August 5, is a day dedicated to appreciating and enjoying oysters, a popular seafood delicacy. The exact origins of National Oyster Day are not well-documented, but it is likely that the day was created by the oyster industry or seafood enthusiasts to promote the consumption and awareness of oysters.

To celebrate in Dubai, a myriad of fine-dining havens have special offers and sought-after Oysters that are beyond mouth-watering.

By giving traditional oysters an innovative twist, guests can indulge in oysters served with Chef Martín Berasategui’s signature gazpacho, effortlessly combining the briny flavour of fresh oysters with chilled gazpacho.
The MAINE Oyster Bar & Grill

With three Dubai outposts (Business Bay, JBR, and Studio City) and a touring Fish Taco truck, MAINE’s Raw Bar anchors the rooms, featuring a selection of fresh fish, king crab, shrimp, scallops, live lobsters, and, of course, oysters – or, as their website puts it, “oysters galore!” All served with Tabasco, fresh horseradish and a selection of mignonettes. As an expression of his North American roots, MAINE Founder Joey Ghazal is serving up a slice of culinary nostalgia for those longing for an honest dining experience devoid of pretentiousness or gimmickry. Blending a post-industrial brasserie aesthetic and meat-packing vibe, the room has a retro-vintage feel with a laid-back New England Extravagance.

Planning on getting a mortgage in Dubai? Note these 5 tips from an expert

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Thinking of buying a property in Dubai? This guide offers valuable insights from Mollie Credland, a Mortgage Advisor at Espace.
Mollie dives into the essential steps to prepare yourself for a mortgage in Dubai’s dynamic property market. She covers everything from understanding down payment requirements to navigating the associated costs of buying a home.
How to Get Mortgage Ready in Dubai?

Know What You Can Afford & the Down Payment Required
If, like most people, you require a mortgage to purchase your home, an experienced mortgage advisor can be invaluable at this stage. Homeownership in Dubai requires a minimum down payment of 20% for properties under AED 5,000,000 and 30% for properties valued above AED 5,000,000 (for expats). Note that the Central Bank allows first-time buyers to borrow up to seven times their salary.
Establish How Much You Can Borrow
Borrowing limits and mortgage affordability are typically calculated the same way across all banks in the UAE. Your monthly liabilities—car loans, personal loans, new monthly installments, and a percentage of your credit card limits—must not exceed 50% of your total monthly income. This is known as your Debt to Borrowing Ratio.
Understand the Associated Costs of Buying Your New Home
Many people make the mistake of simply applying for a mortgage which only covers the price of the house they want to buy. There are several extra costs involved in buying a property and when you are calculating the amount you’ll need to borrow, it’s important you take the following into consideration.
    – Dubai Land Department Fee: 4% of the purchase price + AED 580– Mortgage Registration Fee: 0.25% of the loan amount + AED 290 –– Real Estate Fee: 2% of the purchase price– Property Valuation Fee: Can range between AED 2,500 – AED 3,5004.
How to Choose a Mortgage Provider?
One common mistake people make is going directly to their bank instead of exploring the market. It’s always best to consult an independent mortgage broker who can advise you on the best products available. When selecting a mortgage provider, consider interest rates, loan terms, fees, and customer reviews of the bank. There are 18 banks in the UAE currently offering mortgage lending. Many banks offer preferential interest rates if you move your salary to them (salary transfer), so consider this option if it suits your circumstances.
Apply for a Mortgage Pre-Approval Letter
A mistake we see time and time again is people missing out on their dream home due to not having obtained their mortgage pre-approval. The property market moves quickly in Dubai, and many buyers become disappointed when they lose out to a pre-approved buyer who can fully commit to purchasing the property. Pre-approval lasts 30 to 60 days (depending on the bank), is free of cost, has no obligation, and can even be extended. I advise securing your pre-approval as soon as you start your property search to avoid disappointment and stress later on.
