In the office with the Founders of Lulu & The Beanstalk at ICD Brookfield Place

    Life

    by Camille Macawili

    VIEW GALLERY/ 7 IMAGES
Founders of Lulu & The Beanstalk, Wafa and Amirah Tajdin, talk to Emirates Woman about their hangout spot imbued with cosy familiarity and cool energy in ICD Brookfield Place and how it reflects their heritage and personalities.
How long have you been in this space?
We’ve been open since September 2022, so just over a year.
Have you custom-built any bespoke pieces?
Most of the space was a labour of love from our designer whose signature style is upcycling and re-inventing classic and iconic design pieces. She upcycled six of the Artek dining chairs, complemented by a beautiful Kooij table, and above that sits a one-off lamp designed for use by New York-based Japanese artist Yuko Nishikawa. Our most iconic custom décor is our centerpiece chandelier which was crafted by the whimsical team of Willow Lamp in South Africa. The bar front was a terrazzo design commissioned locally.
How do you think the interior reflects you?
Mama Lulu was a woman who loved colours, and her world was filled with them. That was important for us to recreate through the lens of our designer and a big reason why we went with a female designer as well as she has an authentic understanding of curves, colours and texture. It was also important to evoke our island heritage (we have roots in Lamu and Mombasa in Kenya) and to capture the feeling of warmth and community that our grandmother’s home symbolised not just for us growing up, but our family and community as a whole in Nairobi and now through her spirit, Dubai.
Describe your taste in three words.
    Warm, welcoming and delicately tasteful.

Festive blues: Can’t make it home? Here’s how to still feel the spirit around

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

In the symphony of the holiday season, there’s a nostalgic melody that often tugs at our hearts — the desire to be home for the festivities.
Yet, life’s intricate score sometimes plays a different tune, leading us away from the familiar warmth of our hometowns.
Whether distance or circumstances keep you from making it home this festive season, fear not! In the spirit of embracing the season wherever you are, here’s how you can beat the holiday blues and feel the magical essence of the holidays.
Create a cozy corner at home

Transform a corner of your space into a festive haven. Adorn it with twinkling lights, plush blankets, and a touch of greenery. This snug nook will become your personal retreat, radiating warmth even in the absence of familial hearths.
    Virtual celebrations

    via GIPHY

In our technologically connected era, the distance between hearts can be bridged with a simple click. Arrange virtual gatherings with loved ones, sharing laughter, stories, and perhaps even participating in a virtual gift exchange. The pixels on the screen may not replace physical presence, but they can certainly amplify the joy of togetherness.
    Cultural cuisine

Transport yourself home through the magic of flavours. Experiment with recipes that echo the festive feasts of your roots. Whether it’s the aroma of spices or the taste of a traditional dish, let your taste buds become a passport to the heart of the celebration.
Celebrate festive traditions with your current community

    via GIPHY

Discover and embrace the festive traditions wherever you are, with the community you’ve built for yourself. Whether it’s friends like family or colleagues, visit them or invite them over. Explore holiday markets, and partake in customs. By immersing yourself in these celebrations, you’re not only broadening your cultural horizons but also cultivating a sense of belonging.
While the yearning for home during the holidays may persist, let this season be a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Through a blend of creativity, technology, and a dash of festive magic.
So, wherever you find yourself this season, may it be filled with the unmistakable spirit of love, togetherness, and the timeless magic of the holidays.

9 aromatic candles to welcome the winters in a warm and fuzzy way

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

As the crisp air and vibrant foliage herald the arrival of fall, it’s time to transform your living space into a warm and cozy haven.
One delightful way to achieve this is by incorporating fall-scented candles that not only fill your home with seasonal aromas but also evoke a sense of comfort and tranquility.
    Choosing the Perfect Fall Scents
Opt for candles that capture the essence of autumn. Scents like cinnamon, apple pie, pumpkin spice, wood, amber, oudh and warm vanilla instantly infuse your space with the cozy aroma of fall. These fragrances not only appeal to the olfactory senses but also create an inviting ambiance.
Strategic placement of candles also enhance their impact. Consider creating clusters of candles on coffee tables, mantels, or side tables. This not only adds visual interest but also ensures that the delightful scents waft through the air, enveloping your home in a comforting embrace.
    Coordinate with the Autumn Decor
Complement your fall candles with seasonal decor elements. Incorporate warm-toned throw blankets, plush cushions, and rustic accents to create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. Earthy colours like deep reds, burnt oranges, and rich browns work harmoniously with the warm glow of candlelight.
Fall-winter candles are more than just scented accents—they’re an embodiment of the season’s spirit, transforming your home into a tranquil space of warmth and comfort.
Here’s an editor-approved guide of candles that will kindle the cozy ambiance in your home.

Major milestone: Official approval granted for common GCC tourism visa

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

In a groundbreaking move, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have given the green light to a revolutionary GCC tourism visa, reminiscent of the Schengen model.
This momentous decision was announced by Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, during a gathering of regional interior ministers at the GCC summit in Muscat, Oman, on November 8.
Emphasizing the significance of this new visa, the Secretary General hailed it as a remarkable achievement for the region. He also stressed the need for the timely implementation of the GCC tourist visa within a specific timeframe.
A recent statement by Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s Minister of Economy, indicated that the unified tourism visa could become a reality by 2025. The minister explained that the rollout would be contingent upon the development of specific regulations and legislation. If all internal systems of the participating countries are prepared, the launch is anticipated between 2024 and 2025.

The introduction of a GCC common tourism visa is set to revolutionize travel in the region. Once operational, visitors can utilize a single tourism visa to explore all six GCC states: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
This visionary initiative aligns with the GCC 2030 tourism strategy, aiming to boost the tourism sector’s contribution to the GDP by fostering increased inter-GCC travel and raising hotel occupancy rates. The ultimate goal is to position the GCC as a premier global destination for both regional and international tourists, as articulated by the UAE Minister.
The UAE’s Minister of Economy highlighted that this tourism visa is not only a simplification of travel logistics but also a catalyst for an upsurge in tourism across the region.
This strategic move is poised to make regional travel more accessible and attractive within the next two years.
