How I got my job as… Co-founder of this heavenly GCC-based organic bakery

Lifeby Camille Macawili11 mins ago Welcome to the Emirates Woman weekly series ‘How I got my job as…’ where we speak to some incredible entrepreneurs and businesswomen both based in the UAE and globally to find out about their career paths that led them to where they are now; what their daily routines look like; the advice they’d give to those starting out; and the hurdles they’ve had to overcome. This week, we’re giving the spotlight to Alina Tutkova, Co-founder of Angel Cakes – a chain of organic cafe backed by renowned supermodel, philanthropist and impact investor Natalia Vodianova, dedicated to serving gluten-free and refined sugar-free desserts and breakfast. Established in 2022, Angel Cakes continues its rapid expansion journey as it continues to add locations in the pipeline including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait in 2024.Here, we speak to Alina on how she pivoted her passion for food photography and having a sweet tooth to launching Angel Cakes along with Dima Tutkov, a Grammy-nominated producer, and how she’s working towards her goal of promoting mindful eating within the culinary landscape.Scroll through to read the interview below.Angel Cakes investor Natalia Vodianova and co-founders Alina Tutkova and Dima TutkovWhat was your favourite subject at school?Contrary to what you might expect from someone with a creative flair, my favorite subjects were physics, geometry, and math. I was so passionate about them that I participated in academic competitions, even winning several prizes. What was your first job?My first job was at a modeling agency where I taught acting, fashion history and stage movement. What eventually brought you to Dubai? My journey to Dubai was driven by a desire to grow my business in this vibrant, sun-kissed city. I saw an opportunity to introduce my concept of delicious yet health-friendly desserts in a place known for its love of sweets. What inspired you to enter the F&B space? My foray into the F&B space was fueled by my love for cooking and innovating new recipes. I wanted to build a community where health-conscious people could connect.Talk us through the concept of Angel Cakes.Founded in 2022 by myself and my husband, Dima Tutkov, Angel Cakes is a chain of cafés committed to offering gluten-free and refined sugar-free desserts and breakfasts. Our mission is to provide wholesome, health-conscious options, so we focus on creating an experience where every sweet moment is also a healthy one.Promoting healthy eating and wellness is not just a business mission but a societal responsibility. Our choices influence not only individual well-being but also contribute to building a healthier community. We believe that with strength and a healthy attitude, you can make this world a better place! What are the key elements of your role?I believe that my main job is to be a role model and an advocate for natural, wholesome foods. I am also a brand chef, and I’m deeply involved in product creation, from recipe development to the aesthetic presentation.Talk us through your daily routine. My day begins with a refreshing celery juice or a smoothie, followed by a protein-rich breakfast. After dropping my kids at school, I practice yoga to energize myself for the day. I then spend time at our cafes, collaborating with my team, attending meetings, and creating recipe videos. I pursue my personal interests like singing and improving my English whenever I get the chance. Evenings are dedicated to family time: my three children and lovely husband. What advice do you have for anyone looking to follow in the same footsteps?Consistency is key in any venture, whether it’s business or adopting healthier eating habits. It’s equally crucial to stay true to your principles and aspirations, ignoring any stereotypes or distractions that might divert you from your goals. What is the best piece of advice you ever received? The best advice I’ve received is the importance of trusting, respecting, and believing in the people you work with. And what is the worst?I was once told that entrepreneurs should ignore client feedback, especially during growth phases. I strongly disagree with this. In today’s era of social media, carefully considering customer feedback is crucial for understanding and addressing their needs. What has been the biggest challenge you had to overcome?Expanding into new markets has undoubtedly been my biggest challenge, and the UAE was no exception. The complexity lies not only in adapting to a new business environment but also in understanding and respecting the unique culture and consumer preferences. There’s a delicate balance between maintaining your brand identity and tailoring it to fit the local context. Our journey to establish a foothold in the UAE was filled with learning and adaptation. However, our team’s resilience and dedication turned this challenge into a proud achievement. What are your future goals and plans for your career? My future goal as an entrepreneur is to extend Angel Cakes to more regions, spreading our mission and values. We’ve grown so much since we opened in the UAE — currently, we have four branches across the country including Dubai Mall, Bluewaters, Yas Mall and Dubai Hills Park. We also have plans for expansion into other Middle Eastern countries this year such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. As a holistic chef, I aim to continue crafting unique, balanced products that perfectly blend taste, nutrition, and aesthetics.– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied More

Candlelight Concerts by Fever’s Piano and Violin specialist shares her musical journey

Lifeby Sarah Joseph5 hours ago As an active violinist and pianist in numerous competitions, orchestra concerts, chamber music concerts, and recitals, Yi-Wei (Amy) Huang has won the hearts of many through her talents.Candlelight was initially conceived as a classical music series with concerts featuring works by renowned composers, such as Vivaldi, Mozart, and Chopin. Now, the ever-growing list of programs includes a wide variety of themes and genres, including tributes to contemporary artists like Queen, ABBA and more. This innovative format provides a unique live musical experience, offering a variety of programs to meet all tastes,Throughout the experiences of being a professional music therapist, Yi-Wei’s clinical experiences with children with multiple disabilities have helped her become a much more effective musician who may communicate with audience beyond identified mental and physical boundaries, as well to facilitate the improvement of their quality of life via the aesthetics and functionalities of musical experiences. To delve into a musical journey, Emirates Woman spoke to Yi-Wei, on her journey began on what led her to choose this career path.Talk us through your background and career.I was born in Taiwan. I started my classical music training at age 6. After completing my violin performance degree in Taiwan, I began a different journey in studying music therapy in the United States. I have played in different types of chamber music, such as string quartet, piano trio, and piano quintet, since age 12. I integrated music therapy concepts into music teaching and performance. I like being active in not only music teaching but also music performance. So, playing the violin as part of the Strings, fulfilled my musical life in the UAE.Where do you get the discipline and motivation to be consistent and are there any practices which have helped you with this?As a music therapist and violist, I use the violin to regulate my emotions. I incorporate mindfulness concepts in my warm-up routine to ground myself and achieve consistency. What role has mentorship played in your career? One of my most important mentors is my professor, Sophia Lee. She showed me how music can change and improve each individual’s life quality. Also, she is the best example of balancing her life with teaching, performing, and practising music therapy. She is the person I would call when I feel upset and lost in life. Are there any milestones you are most proud of?One of the milestones I am proud of in the UAE would be the moment we performed our first Hans Zimmer Candlelight concert. We spent so much time working closely together and finally shared our music with the audience. It is amazing to communicate and connect with the audience through music universally. How important is music in creating the perfect ambience – how does this add to the experience?Imagine there is no sound when you watch a horror movie. You might not feel scared that much. That is the power of music. Music creates a unique atmosphere. For example, the songs from the Hans Zimmer program provide a variety of styles to make each movie more unforgettable. People can still remember how it feels like when they recall the movies. Music plays an important role in that. What is the most important to you when you are on the stage performing?Enjoying the moment is the most important to me while performing on the stage. Even though there are a lot of uncertainties during the live performance, being at the moment and embracing the uncertainties is the beauty of live performance.Your philosophy is to help students build connections with music and express their emotions – how do you do so?When I teach, I let my students express their feelings about the pieces they are learning and discuss the reason behind these feelings and emotions. Also, I give examples that they could relate to understand the emotions and connect them with techniques. So it helps them practice and improve techniques with emotional expression better. As an educator, your interest lies in brain development and music therapy – why is this important? The two main things I would apply from my music therapy background in my teaching would be the task analysis and how different everyone could be. Every individual has their strengths and weaknesses, so being flexible to meet every student’s needs and providing the best method of instrument practice would be vital and practical in my teaching.– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied More

This UK-based expert shares her top tips to overcome stress in 2024

Lifeby Sarah Joseph50 mins ago Maryam Meddin, founder of The Soke, a mental health and wellness clinic in London shares her tips on how to overcome stress in 2024.What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine look like?My alarm usually rings at 5am, after which I take a shower, fuel my system with coffee and ready to be out of the house by 6am. Unless there’s something that’s pressing on my mind, that hour would have been all about catching up with the news from around the world and I’ll have tried not to think about work.Talk us through your background.I was born in Iran but have spent most of my life in the UK, so I feel that I have the privilege of being enriched by two prominent cultures. There’s also been diversity in my professional life – I studied law, however later built a career in branding. When that was going well, I decided to explore my mental health through psychotherapy, which then led me to train as a psychotherapist, and finally towards the launch of The Soke. What inspired you to launch The Soke? There was a lot of loss in the first 25 years of my life, including the loss of my father and brother so, from a purely personal perspective, The Soke is really dedicated to them. I was around 40 when I decided to try therapy and it was a defining experience for me. Ultimately it was through this process of both being a user and a provider of mental health services that I was able to identify shortcomings on both sides and wanted to create a service that tried to address them.Tell us about the concept and what services does the clinic offer? We’re a private mental health centre with the full spectrum of services offered by psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and coaches. It was designed to enable individuals with everyday issues (anxiety, depression, ADHD and more) to get the services they needed from a place that would treat them as clients, not patients. People don’t necessarily always know how to find the most appropriate solution for their emotional or psychological problems, so I wanted The Soke to provide all the options under the same roof and to have a strong service element that would help clients navigate the pathway that would serve them best. We satisfy their curiosity and support them so that they can make their own informed choices. You cannot overestimate the value of providing these sorts of tangential services around mental health, especially to parents who feel incredibly vulnerable when trying to make decisions around the care of their children. I believe that by making people feel empowered around their psychological health they’ll start engaging with their thoughts and emotions in a way that’s conducive to improving their wellness and therefore their quality of life. It’s no different to working with a personal trainer for your physical health: you fix the problem areas; you build strength and develop resilience in order to feel better overall. The clinic offers best-in-class psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors and leadership development specialists – tell us more. Our practitioners cover a range of specialties, from depression to ADHD to compulsive behaviours and everything in between. They’re all chosen based on their expertise and experience, as well as their appetite to collaborate with their peers to ensure that clients get the benefit of their pooled knowledge through a daily Multi-disciplinary Team Meeting. Paying practitioners to spend time quite simply talking to each other and sharing their insights is a model that doesn’t really exist in the private outpatient world, and this sort of collaborative ethos is why we’ve been lucky enough to draw some of the leading names in our field. Increasingly our clients are based outside the UK, and they come to us because our Multidisciplinary clinical model combined with the service element doesn’t really exist where they’re based. What are some of the major concerns that clients talk about? We’re inundated by calls requesting assessments: from ADHD to Educational Psychology and Autism – our primary responsibility is to make sure that concerns are reasonable, rather than say yes to everyone who wants to be tested. After that, it’s the ‘usual suspects’ of depression and anxiety – although we’re seeing much more of it in children than we used to. On the corporate side, workplace culture is playing an ever-growing role in the sustainability of organisations and so we work with a lot with leaders who are striving to strike the balance between being a leader that performs (from a business perspective) and one that transforms (from a cultural perspective). It demands a thoughtful type of leadership that allows consistency and change to co-exist and increasingly modern leaders are recognising the need to have a ‘safe space’ to ruminate and develop their thoughts.“I think that everyone should try to find that one space in their head, where going to it can bring them down from 100 to zero in a matter of minutes.”With stress levels constantly on the rise – what can help lower them?Naturally, I’m an advocate for talking – ideally to someone who doesn’t have a stake in your life and can help you to explore your anxieties without judgement or repercussion. Separate from that, I think that everyone should try to find that one space in their head, where going to it can bring them down from 100 to zero in a matter of minutes. How can employers create a working culture that boosts business resilience and growth?People in leadership positions need to lead by example: show strength in compassion and demonstrate a concerted effort to be a force for the good of the company’s people as well as its other stakeholders. The star players in any sector will want to work for those who can inspire them to succeed and grow as individuals as well as professionals – attracting and retaining talent is always an excellent starting point for longevity. What advice would you give to anyone who wishes to start therapy?A productive therapeutic process relies on the relationship of trust that exists between the client and practitioner – and that doesn’t come overnight, so after you’ve found someone with the right credentials, allow a couple of sessions to see if they feel right for you and whether you can envisage fully trusting this person at some point. That’s when the real work starts between you. Therapy isn’t designed to be fun – if you’re enjoying it because it’s easy then one of you isn’t doing your job right. We all want to start the year on a positive note – what would you recommend?Find that one thing to do or that one place in your head that gives you peace and visit it frequently. This is ‘The Alignment issue’ – what activities ensure you feel aligned daily? My alignment generally comes at the end of the day. I try to spend some time alone with my own thoughts to process and be ready for whatever’s coming next. The Soke’s core value is Generosity – to exercise it as frequently as opportunity allows, whether it’s with time, knowledge, kindness, humour or something tangible. I chose generosity not just because it’s such a positive attribute, but because it’s measurable. I can reflect on my day and examine whether I’ve lived by the value I espouse for my company. If the answer is yes, then I’m sufficiently aligned to fall asleep with a good conscience.January’s – The Alignment Issue with FitnGlam  – Download Now– For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and InstagramImages: Supplied & Feature Image: Pexels @Anete Lusina  More
