Combining the best of sunbathing, swimming and exercise, stand up (SUP) paddle boarding is one of our favourite ways to beat the heat, tone up and get a golden tan at the end.
In addition, a solo activity like this is also great for the mind. Studies have shown than being closer to the water makes people happier. Gliding along the waves with minimum noise, moving slowly and enjoying the best of what nature provides can aid in soothing anxiety. It’s a form of moving mediation, which is why SUP yoga and SUP meditation have taken off.
It can also be great to do with a group of friends, if only for the comedy value of someone falling into the water while trying to balance – laughter is a form of medicine after all.
If you’re using it as a form of exercise then you’re already a step ahead. SUP works the core as you try to balance with every paddle. It also targets the back muscle as well as arms and legs. You basically get a full-body workout that’s actually fun too.
