One of the highest accolades for short movies at the Cannes Film Festival is the Short Film Palme d’Or. Fiercely competitive, it invites some of the greatest filmmakers from around the world to submit their work, and only one walks away with the esteemed title.
This year there the committee received 3,810 submissions from 137 countries with only 11 making it the final cut. Among them is Egyptian director Sameh Alaa and his 15-minute short
The only Arab film in this line-up, it stars Seif Eldin Hemida and Nourhan Ali Abdelazez and although there is little information on the plot, we know it follows a journey of a man seeking redemption.
The film will premiere during the 73rd edition of the Cannes Film Festival in fall, and it’s not the only Arabic representation at the iconic event.
Earlier this month, the organisers announced 56 films that would’ve premiered at this year festival if it wasn’t cancelled due to coronavirus. Among them were four movies from Arab filmmakers, Jimmy Keyrouz; Ayten Amin; Danielle Arbid and Maïwenn.
