How you can make that time of the month more sustainable

Five brands to know.

Sustainability efforts are being implemented across the board, and as women we have an opportunity to contribute by making the best of that pesky monthly visitor.

According to reports, an average woman has her period for 2535 days of her life and gets through approximately 14,000 tampons in that timeframe. Sanitary pads and tampons also produce around 100 billion pieces of waste on annual basis, meaning that about 27,938 used tampons and applicators can be found on the world’s beaches daily. Not only that but 90 percent of sanitary products are made from plastic and are not biodegradable.

Luckily, there are a number of brands who have introduced eco-friendly sanitary products that are hygienic and safe to use. It’s early days but we can start making a difference, one period at a time.

DAME

DAME is first reusable tampon applicator launched by friends Celia Pool and Alec Mills. Named ‘D’, it is made of a smooth material called Mediprene and can fit all tampon sizes. “Why waste thousands of single-use plastic applicators when you could just use one, for life?”

Flex

Comfortable period solution that you can wear for up to 12 hours? Sign us up! Flex is not a cup or a tampon, but a flexible disposable disc that fits any body shape. It is made from medical-grade polymer used in surgical tools, its hypoallergenic, BPA and phthalate-free and free from rubber latex or silicone.

TOTM

If there’s one brand that makes periods look stylish it’s TOTM. Not only does their platform provide useful information, their range of products are certified cruelty-free and vegan, and come in sustainable packaging. They are made from certified organic cotton with no rayon, perfumes, gels or chlorine bleach.

Freda

Freda is a subscription service for carefully designed products that contain no chemicals and made of 100% certified organic cotton and are biodegradable. They are hypoallergenic and free from synthetic fibres commonly found in tampons, whilst their pads contain 100% eco-friendly and renewable materials. Not only that, but the company works with Scandinavian factory that produces zero landfill waste.

Lunapads

The Canadian brand Lunapads produces reusable pads that you can throw in the wash after use. They are made from comfortable materials and come in a variety of designs, making having your period that little bit more fun. They also create organic cotton period underwear that hold 2 tampons’ worth of flow.
