8 ways to support World Vegan Day in Dubai

Today, November 1, 2020, marks annual World Vegan Day – a day which celebrates the benefits of being vegan whether that be in terms of health or the environment.
With that, here’s eight ways you can support World Vegan Day in Dubai and the UAE, whether that be through food, fashion or beauty.
    Visit a top Dubai restaurant

Enjoy the best of vegan Asian cuisine at top Dubai restaurant Shanghai Me this World Vegan Day – or for the whole of November which marks World Vegan Month. Standout vegan dishes include the steamed wild mushroom dumplings, wok tofu with salt & pepper, the salted cucumber with avocado and coriander, the aubergine salad with tomatoes and spring onion and vegetable spring rolls. Not only is the cuisine fabulous, but the ambience and interiors of the restaurant are also to die for and with its stunning terrace having recently reopened, it’s the perfect time of year to pay a visit to Shanghai Me.
    A new meal plan

In celebration of World Vegan Day and World Vegan Month, a new plant-based meal plan has launched. Say hello to Root’D. Packed with clean nutrients, there are three different plans available and over 45 meal options, meaning there’s something for everyone. The plans are specifically curated to help customers achieve overall health, improve digestion and positively impact their lives both physically and mentally.
    A free vegan dessert

Just because it’s vegan cuisine, doesn’t mean you can’t indulge. To mark World Vegan Day, Wavebreaker Beach Restaurant & Grill at Hilton Dubai will be offering its signature vegan salted caramel crème brûlée for free when restaurant-goers order any main dish from their plant-based selection on the menu.
    Complimentary corn fritters

If you fancy some Thai cuisine on World Vegan Day, Fuchsia Urban Thai will be giving away a complimentary serving of corn fritters for each vegan item – there’s over 25 to choose from – which is ordered from their menu.
    A new vegan menu

Instagrammable breakfast spot Brunch & Cake has unveiled a new plant-based menu to mark World Vegan Day and any customers who order off the new vegan menu will receive a complimentary slice of vegan cheesecake. Yum!
    Vegan makeup brushes

Ethical and sustainable beauty has never been more popular or important, which is why now is the perfect time to invest in some vegan, cruelty-free, responsibly sourced makeup brushes. Earlier this year, UAE-based beauty brand the odist launched 10 new makeup brushes which took two years to develop and include three high-performing vegan hair types, each designed to work with specific makeup textures and formulas that out-perform natural hair. The brushes are responsibly sourced and designed to last up to a decade if maintained properly. A one-off investment on odist’s sustainable makeup tools will prevent a number of non-sustainable brushes inevitably ending up in a landfill.
    Il Passaggio

For some amazing Mediterranean-inspired vegan cuisine, head to Il Passaggio this World Vegan Day by enjoying the selection of vegan dishes this Dubai-based restaurant has to offer. Enjoy dishes which include Panzenela which features croutons, red onion, capers, cherry tomato, mint leaves, basil, salt and black pepper; quinoa salad which features avocado, cherry tomatoes, organic peach, rocca leaves, hazelnut, sun-dried cranberries and passionfruit dressing; or bruschetta which features roma tomatoes and onions on freshly baked bread.
    Vegan Christmas treat

Get in the Christmas spirit early with some new plant-based vegan treats from Marks & Spencer. The new range contains a wide variety of meat and dairy-free treats that are certain to delight both vegans and non-vegans alike – from indulgent chocolate truffles and mince pies, to easy appetisers and stunning side dishes for Christmas itself.

One hundred grooms across the country gathered to join in a virtual wedding – five venues across the emirates played host to 20 grooms – and they also got a huge surprise, a congratulations from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

“Simplicity in weddings deepens its blessings,” His Highness said. “I hope that there is always simplicity and ease in these matters.”
With social distancing measures at all five venues in place, the ceremonies were organised by the Ministry of Community Development to celebrate the marriages of the grooms and brides from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

Gigi Hadid shares first family photo with Zayn Malik and their newborn daughter

It’s been just over one month since Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik welcomed their first child together – a baby girl.
Throughout her pregnancy, the supermodel kept a largely low profile and has done the same since welcoming her daughter, only showing a few discreet photos and keeping her name under wraps.

However, the 25-year-old has now shared the first Hadid-Malik family photo in celebration of Halloween.
“My first Halloween,” Gigi captioned the family snap. The whole family were dressed up in costumes. Gigi was dressed up as Samus Aran from the video game Metroid, Zayn was a member of Slytherin House from the popular book and movie series Harry Potter and little baby Hadid-Malik was dressed as The Hulk, with some help from some GIFs Gigi added into the Instagram story.

While it’s the first family photo she has shared, Gigi kept her daughter’s face hidden. Up until now, we had only seen glimpses of the newborn’s hand.
Gigi welcomed her first child just over a month ago, revealing she had given birth on Instagram posting a sweet photo of new dad Zayn holding the tiny hand of baby Hadid-Malik.
“Our girl joined us earth-side this weekend and she’s already changed our world,” she captioned the photo. “So in love.”

According to E! News, the name of baby Hadid-Malik, which has been kept private by the couple, is “unique” but an alleged source wouldn’t give anything else away.
Gigi’s pregnancy was first reported on back in April. The model first spoke of her pregnancy – news which was revealed in the press and not by Gigi or Zayn – during a video call appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, admitting they would have liked to reveal the news on their “own terms”, but also thanked everyone for their congratulations.
“Obviously, we wish we could’ve announced it on our own terms, but we’re very excited and happy and grateful for everyone’s well wishes and support,” she said.
Zayn and Gigi originally started dating in 2016, and have been on-and-off ever since, with their latest split taking place in mid-2019. However, the pair reunited earlier this year, but have been keeping their romance away from the public glare.

The UAE has ranked in the top 10 safest countries in the world

The UAE has ranked in the top 10 safest countries in the world.

In a new report conducted by research and analytics organisation Gallup entitled the 2020 Global Law and Order report, the UAE ranked number 10 in the list of safest countries.
Topping the list was Singapore, followed by Turkmenistan, China, Iceland, another GCC country, Kuwait, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Uzbekistan, then followed by the UAE.
The report gathered data from a whopping 144 countries to check how safe people feel in the place they call home. While the UAE had an incredible score of 92, Singapore aced the list with 97 points.
The data was gathered from 144 countries globally, and the index score calculations were based on a series of questions which included the public’s confidence in police; whether they felt safe walking home at nice; whether anyone had had something stolen in the last year; and whether in the last 12 months if they had been assaulted or mugged.
In a breakdown of the categories, the UAE ranked number four on the ‘Countries Where People Feel Safest Walking Alone’ list.
Again, Singapore came out on top, followed by Turkmenistan, Norway, the UAE, China, Kuwait, Slovenia, Tajikstan, Denmark and Saudi Arabia.

7 Outfits to Wear This Fall

If there’s one thing I learned this year, it’s that you need to take joy where you can get it—be it from an episode of your favorite show, your favorite creamer mixed into your coffee in the morning, or dressing in real clothes when you have absolutely nowhere to go.Fall clothes are the height of fashion; every other season pales in comparison to the rich tones, excess of textures, and variety of options that fall has to offer. And, pandemic or not, that’s something that should be relished.
Whether you’re looking for an outfit to wear to your Thanksgiving at home or just something to spice up your average Tuesday (we feel you), these are seven fool-proof outfits to wear this season, chock-full of camel tones, cozy sweaters, and all the fun boots your cabin-fever-ridden self could dream up. Throw your sweats in the hamper and try out one of these this week:

    1. A sweater dress, knee-high boots, and a quilted bag

This is the quintessential Thanksgiving look: you’re ultra-cozy in a sweater dress (and no pants, obviously), but the contrast between the camel sweater and black boots makes the look feel dressed-up and seasonally appropriate.
Here, the accessories have the potential to do all the talking. For something fancier, top it off with cat-eye sunnies and a quilted bag (like we did here). To dress it down, pair it with your favorite shoulder bag and aviators. The options are endless.

sweater dress / boots / bag / sunglasses

    2. A camel coat, skinny jeans, and loafers

There are few things a good camel coat can’t fix, and if you’re in search of a new go-to uniform, chances are, a camel coat could be your missing ingredient. This one is ultra-flattering with puffed sleeves and a wrap detail, and the emerald green python loafers give it an unexpected element that screams autumn. A white, top-handle bag serves as the icing on the cake, and gives another layer of dimension by adding another neutral color to the mix.

    jeans / coat / sweater / loafers / bag

    3. A lace top, leather pants, and heeled boots

Leather and lace is the juxtaposition that we turn to time and time again for the combination of edginess and femininity that it can simultaneously bring. Here, we stuck to shades of tan to give it a monochromatic feel, and topped it off with pops of white.
When searching for a good lace blouse, we’re partial to one with a high neck and detailing that gives it the ability to be paired with anything, from jeans to your work pants.

    pants / top / boots / bag

    4. A matching set, sherpa moto jacket, and white sneakers

We’re all trying to figure out ways to look chic while staying cozy this year, and nothing does that more than a monochrome matching set (that can double as going-out wear and loungewear) paired with a cool-girl jacket and sneakers. It’s effortless, relaxed, and gives the appearance that you spent way more thought on it than you did (let’s be real, you probably rolled out of bed in it—but no one would ever know).

matching set / sneakers / jacket / sunglasses

    5. A puffer, light-wash jeans, and white sneakers

Oversized puffers are one of the top outerwear trends of the season, and it isn’t hard to figure out why: they’re simple, practical, and exude coolness. Pair yours with your favorite sweater and jeans, and top it off with your favorite sneakers and sunglasses for an outfit you can take from errands to an outdoor happy hour with friends.

    jeans / puffer / sweater / sneakers / bag

    6. A black turtleneck, black leather pants, and white coat

If there’s one thing 2020 did right, it’s faux leather. Long gone are the days of squeaky, cheap pleather that you had to shimmy around your bedroom to get into. This year is full of soft, comfortable options that look like the real thing—without the cost to your wallet or the environment.
There’s just something about a long, white coat, and paired on top of an all-black look, it pops and serves as the winter white look of our dreams. If you want to go the extra mile, add a statement bag on top—then wear it all everywhere you go this winter.

    coat / pants / top / bag / boots

    7. A matching set and cozy sherpa jacket

This jacket is the sherpa of our dreams, and we’ve been wearing ours everywhere from late-night runs to get wine to on the couch all day while we’re working. The leather detailing on it brings it up a notch from your average sherpa jacket and makes it worthy of wear all season long.

How to Navigate Thanksgiving in a Pandemic

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and if you thought that we’d still be where we are (staying home, washing our hands, wearing masks, social distancing) all of these months after March, well, then I guess you’re vindicated. Thanksgiving is going to look a lot different this year for millions of people across the country. Some will travel early with enough time for quarantining, isolating, or a COVID-19 test (or some combination of that), others will forego their usual bustling holiday table for something more low-key, and still others are scrapping plans entirely, planning on a Thanksgiving dinner for just one or two. It’s hard, this navigating life events, milestones, and holidays during a global pandemic, and while we certainly all hope that next year is an altogether different kind of situation, you don’t just have to ignore the holidays entirely (unless, of course, you want to—this year, all bets are off). The precautions you ultimately decide to take will be dependent on many different factors, but there are some things that you should keep top of mind so that you can (hopefully) celebrate safely this year.

    Source: Adrian Cotiga | Stocksy

    If you’re traveling
Airports and interstates are notoriously busy during the week of Thanksgiving. But this year isn’t most years and many more people are likely staying closer to home than they would otherwise. The CDC advises that you stay close to home rather than travel because any travel can increase the risk that you’ll be exposed to or come down with COVID-19. If you’re still planning on traveling, the precautions you need to take vary based on how you’re traveling.
If you’re planning on a plane, train, or any other kind of group transportation, make sure you have masks with you (and wear them while traveling). According to Healthline, mask-wearing is required by all major airline carriers. Some airlines still have social distancing measures in place, while others are again approving filling flights to capacity, so if you feel strongly about trying your best to continue social distancing on the plane, you may need to do a little research. Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines are still blocking some seats, according to reporting from the Washington Post, but they’re not all doing so for the same length of time, so if you’re flying closer to the end of the year, your airline options may change.
Driving in your own car gives you more control over the precautions taken, but don’t forget to think through how you’re going to handle staying safe if or when you need to stop—for gas, for food, for the night, or to use the bathroom.
No matter how you’re traveling, make sure you pack plenty of wipes and sanitizer, wash your hands frequently, wear a mask, and stay conscious of if or how often you’re touching your face.

If you’re staying closer to home
Staying home doesn’t mean that you don’t have any difficult decisions to make. If your Thanksgiving normally looks like tons of family and friends gathered in one place (indoors), it may need to look a little different this year.
Michael Osterholm from the Center for Infectious Diseases Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota told STAT News that no one should gather with anyone who lives outside of their household this year because the risk is just too great. The CDC, however, lists a few other suggestions for people who are concerned by the idea of essentially canceling Thanksgiving altogether:

Make traditional recipes for people who can’t gather with you and do a no-contact drop-off.
    Take your Thanksgiving virtual.
Skip Black Friday shopping and shop from the comfort of home (or in person later on).
Skip in-person sporting events, parades, and more and watch from home or participate virtually.

If skipping a dinner just isn’t something you’re willing to do this year, taking as many precautions as possible can help keep the risk lower. One basic thing you can do is to just continue to make sure you’re following expert guidance to wear a mask, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, stay apart, and get together outside, Stephen Morse, an epidemiologist at Columbia University, told The Atlantic. The CDC’s guidance for hosting or attending a gathering can also help you lower some of your risk. Restricting attendance to your “pandemic pod” (as long as everyone is doing their part) might feel safer to you this year. Keeping an eye on what conditions are like where you are and using that to help decide if you’re going to pare back this year (or even make the transition to FaceTime) may also be a good idea.
If you live somewhere that outdoor celebrations are possible, consider moving dinner outside this year, a 2020 move if we’ve ever seen one. Experts say that being outdoors is safer than being indoors, so that’s one more way you can try to mitigate some of the risk.

If you’re celebrating solo (or with very few others)
Celebrating solo might not be your usual Thanksgiving plan, but it very well could be this year, particularly if you live far from family. It might not be the most cheerful Thanksgiving you’ll ever have (or maybe it will—no family feuds to combat or politics to talk over dinner), but it doesn’t have to be the worst either. Consider scrapping your traditional menu and making whatever you think sounds good. Conversely, maybe this year, of all years, is when you feel especially attached to your family’s traditional menu—call your relatives and gather some recipes so that you’ll feel at least some things are still the same. Try upping your holiday decor game with new Thanksgiving duds or just scrap that and put up the decor for a holiday you love. Maybe that means a Christmas tree, maybe that means leaving Halloween decor up far longer than usual, or maybe it’s something else entirely. You’re the one there, so you’re the one who gets to make those rules.
If you’re celebrating alone or with just a few additional people and you don’t want to put in the work for a full dinner, consider ordering a restaurant-quality Thanksgiving dinner or opting for your favorite local fare. There’s no rule that you have to eat a certain meal on Thanksgiving, so do what feels best to you and what will make your holiday special. Prop up a computer or phone for holiday FaceTiming or embrace the minimal interactions and plan a self-care day all your own.
The best part of celebrating alone is that it truly gets to be whatever you want it to, so don’t overthink things too much. Plan a day that you’ll enjoy and consider going back to your usual traditions (whatever they may be) next year or the year after.

Whether you’re staying at home or traveling across the country, if you’re getting together with family members or friends, don’t be afraid to ask them what sorts of precautions they’re taking in their everyday life (or, at least, within a few weeks of Thanksgiving), especially if you or someone else there is at greater risk. After all, when it comes to an infectious virus, what you do doesn’t just affect you, it also affects anyone with whom you’re spending time. If you’re planning to spend time with people who are higher risk or older in age, consider taking even more precautions or canceling the event entirely. Determine if the precautions your fellow family members and friends are taking are things you’re comfortable with or not, and don’t be afraid to tell them what you need so that you do feel comfortable. They may or may not agree to those kinds of guidelines, but at least then you’ll be able to feel more confident in your decision to either gather or skip it this year. Hopefully next year, the COVID situation will be different.
There are going to be some really hard choices to make this year. No one wants to have to completely overhaul times often spent with family and friends, particularly if it means that you might end up spending that time alone (no matter how festive that time might be). Ultimately, the best you can do is do your research, have honest conversations with friends and family about what you think is best and what you’re comfortable with, and try to make the choice that feels best and safe for you and those around you.
