So You Overindulged Over the Long Weekend? Here’s Why That’s OK, and How to Support Your Body Now

You just had a long weekend that was one for the books, with one caveat: You parked it poolside with bottomless drink in hand, worked your way through bags (yes, plural) of popcorn and pretzels alongside said drinks, and had the works at a BBQ—burger, hot dogs, chips, ice cream, you name it. Translation: You woke up the day after the 4th of July feeling hungover, drained, and bloated, not to mention guilty for overindulging (whether or not we care to admit it, we’ve all been there). Your first instinct may be to beeline to the store to stock up on a juice cleanse, swear off anything “bad,” and sign up for a HIIT class pronto, but PSA: You don’t need to detox, no matter how much you think you “overindulged.” Ahead, why it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing when it comes to your eating and drinking habits and tried-and-true ways to give your body some extra TLC after a weekend of excess. Spoiler: There’s no dieting in sight.

If you feel guilty about “overindulging,” here’s why you shouldn’t:

    Your body naturally detoxifies itself
It bears repeating: No matter what or how much you’ve noshed on or knocked back, a whole-body cleanse to eliminate “toxins” is not necessary. Why? The body has its own natural detox system and process and can repair itself from the occasional overindulgence. It processes and digests all of it—the countless helpings of BBQ fare you consumed, the one too many cocktails you imbibed, the number of s’mores or ice cream cones you lost count devouring.
Your digestive tract, liver, kidneys, and skin all work together to make the body well-equipped to “detox” every day. Everything from the saliva in the mouth to the enzymes in the stomach is meant to break down toxins, digest food, get the nourishment it needs from that food, and then get rid of excess through your urine, stool, and sweat. A healthy body is built to identify, process, and eliminate substances that are either unnecessary or harmful all on its own (no extreme diet or cleanse required).

A healthy, well-balanced diet also includes foods you love
Eating “healthy” is confusing AF. Thanks to the conflicting food and nutrition information at our fingertips, there’s a lot of debate about what a “healthy diet” really means. That’s because a healthy diet is never one-size-fits-all; it looks different to every single person. But it boils down to this: following your body’s hunger cues and listening to cravings (that goes for your favorite foods too!) and making intuitive choices with whatever is available. In other words, if your body needs a burger with all the trimmings, honor it. And when you do, it doesn’t mean you’ve “fallen off the wagon” or “cheated.” A healthy diet includes foods that bring you joy and celebrate special occasions without judgment (that in itself is cause for celebration!). There’s room for all foods–including indulgences–in a healthy diet.

Restrictions can lead to unhealthy behaviors
Post-indulgence remorse can be a b*tch and leave you feeling like you have to punish yourself for your “bad” decisions—whether it be a sweat-drenching workout or limiting yourself to what you can and can’t eat. But depriving yourself of certain foods or food groups can backfire and result in disordered eating, like binge-eating, skipping meals, or fasting—all of which can do a number on not only your mental health, but also your physical well-being (looking at you, metabolism and hormones). Food is not the enemy, but rather a source of nutrients and energy to fuel our bodies to do the things we love to do. Instead of restricting foods and suppressing cravings, listen to your body’s hunger and satiety signals, eat nourishing foods whenever you’re hungry, and savor the less nutrient-dense provisions (read: the chips, ice cream, booze) shame and guilt-free.

    Joy is a key nutrient
Nutrition is more than just fueling your body with what’s on your plate. While food is at the forefront of nurturing our bodies, the people we spend our time with, the activities we engage in, and the content we take in (think: social media, the news, shows) also feed us. Just like we need protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, and minerals to function optimally, we need joy for our overall health and wellness. We often put so much time, thought, and energy into what we eat (or shouldn’t), but we’re missing a key piece of the puzzle. That joy nutrient is just as important as protein and fiber. And sometimes, joy looks like an ice cream cone on a summer day, a burger at a family barbecue, or spicy margaritas by the pool with your besties. You’re still nourishing yourself, even if it’s not nutritionally.

Instead of dieting, here’s how to support your body RN:

    Engage in gentle movement
Despite what diet culture tells you, a grueling workout is not going to cancel out or make up for what you ate last night or over the course of a long weekend, nor does it need to. Resist the urge to try to “erase” or burn off the calories you’ve ingested by overdoing it in the exercise department. If you’re feeling up for it, ease into a light workout like walking, a restorative yoga flow, or a “lazy girl workout” to get the heart pumping and support your digestive tract. A low-intensity sesh can be just as effective as its high-intensity counterpart with perks such as improving cardiovascular fitness, lessening fatigue and pain, elevating mood, enhancing sleep quality, and bettering mobility and balance.

    Stay hydrated with water
ICYMI, your reusable water bottle is the “it” wellness accessory to have on you at all times. After all, staying hydrated is essential for our skin, digestion, hormone balance, sleep quality, and mood. If you’ve been sipping on aperitifs and munching on sodium-laden snacks all weekend, you’re especially going to want to listen up. Aside from keeping your water tumbler on hand, reach for water-rich foods (think: cucumber, lettuce, celery, tomatoes, zucchini, and strawberries), add electrolytes to your H2O to replenish essential minerals, and counteract the dehydrating effects of alcohol intake by increasing your water consumption. And while you’re at it, give your hydration goals (and digestive system) a leg up by swapping your morning cup of joe with a tall glass of warm lemon water.

    Load up on veggies
Rather than harping on what not to eat, focus on what you can add to your plate and eating habits. Vegetables like dark leafy greens provide high-fiber content that gives your gut a healthy boost. They’re also rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals to aid your body in reducing inflammation. On the other hand, the sugary and fatty munchies you’ve been snacking on the past few days lack the fiber and protein that keep your blood sugar levels stabilized and your hunger at bay. The good news? You can get your fill of veggies by incorporating them into each meal. Get creative by sneaking them into omelets, veggie sauces, and baked goods, blending ’em into smoothies, making a rice or pizza crust out of them, or transforming them into noodles. The world is your zucchini/cauliflower/sweet potato!

    Get plenty of rest
If there’s ever a good excuse to take a catnap, it’s after a long weekend of indulgences when you’ve likely skimped on sleep. Insufficient sleep can influence your taste buds and increase cravings for unhealthy foods. But when you get solid shut-eye, your body gets to work to reset itself. “So many different processes happen while we sleep that keep us healthy (rest, recovery, repair, rejuvenation),” explained Dr. Whitney Roban, PhD, a sleep specialist and founder of Solve Our Sleep. “Your brain and body release toxins which lead to stronger brain health and overall physical health, your body restores energy, and the muscles and cells in your body repair and grow.” If your body is nudging you to get some Zzzs, do yourself a favor and have an afternoon siesta and aim for a solid 7-9 hours of sleep at night.

    Be kind to yourself
There’s no good in berating yourself for the food coma you’re experiencing. Stress and guilt after eating do more harm to your body than the hot dog and slice of pie could ever do, so show yourself compassion if you’re feeling the regret creep in. Try to let any negativity around your food choices go and do what works for you to reframe your mindset and move forward. Maybe that looks like resuming your routine of meal prepping and scheduling your workouts for the week, DIY-ing a lymphatic drainage massage, or practicing affirmations. At the end of the day, our thoughts, which affect our feelings, behaviors, and choices, are the only thing that needs a helping hand in detoxing.

Paris Haute Couture Week Fall/Winter 2023 commenced on July 3, 2023. Celebrities from across the globe ascended in the fashion capital to grace the front-row of brands they champion.
On one hand, Paris is dealing with a humanitarian crisis caused by the untimely death of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk, who was shot by the French Police — on the other, it’s business as usual for Paris Haute Couture Week. The streets of the city of love are roiled with riots, demanding justice for the young boy.
Fashion and its vitality almost seem unimportant at the moment, but it also happens to be a brutal business chained with millions of livelihoods. A fashion week involves months of planning, investments and vigour from brands across the world, who put in their all to be a part of this prestigious calendar.
Supporting the spirit of the fashion fraternity, A-listers from Hollywood, Bollywood and other entertainment industries marked the significant fashion week with their presence. From Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and House Ambassador Natalie Portman at Dior to Cardi B stopping the traffic at Schiaparelli — the ladies turned up in style.
As couture week continues to dominate our timelines, here are some of the best front-row fashion moments so far.

8 inspiring things I learned as a third culture kid in Dubai

“Our homes are not defined by geography or one particular location, but by memories, events, people and places that span the globe”, says author Marilyn Gardner.
As an exciting land of opportunities for a plethora of adults, Dubai quickly became home to my parents who arrived 30 years ago with no plan of settling down or raising a family here.
So immediately when people ask “Where are you from?” and immediately my brain starts to do the math. Wait, do I say where I’m born and raised? Or where my parents were born? But hold on, I grew up in Dubai my whole life, so this for me is home.

Hard Rock Café, Image courtesy of Linda Hollier
All the early residents have seen the city grow since the early ‘00s, where the emirate as known by many ended at the old Hard Rock café in an area what is today known as Media City today. The comfort, safety and warmth to different cultures has left it as a cushion for many like my parents to settle down and make this inviting haven their home.
While I often grew up with a sense of being unique in a negative sense, I’ve now realised how being different actually makes you stand out, thereby coming to the conclusion about how the pros outweigh the cons.
What is the definition of a Third-culture kid?
As per google, it’s a person who grows up in a culture different from the one in which his or her parents grew up in. The terms refers to the mixed identity that a child assumed, influenced both by their parents’ culture and the one they’re raised in.
The term was first coined by American sociologist Ruth Useem, who focused on studding the lives of expatriates living in India.
While a lot of us tend to focus on the negative aspects that come from moving abroad, we usually avoid shedding light on the myriad of positive elements and memories that we can cherish for a lifetime from this experience.
Now as you go on to read and might be on the same journey as me and what I’ve learned and observed might come with a hint of nostalgia, you might relate to the below as your embark on your own path in this city.
    My friends became my family
Having been raised in the same school for 12 years, my peers became my family and 16 years later, we to this date still speak on the phone almost every single day. Be it the first piece of advice I need, the first good news I wish to share or the first person to vent to after an unending series of unfortunate events, my friends are now family, and we don’t think twice before showing up and being there for each other on a daily basis.
I’ve bonded with peers over my differences
No one person in the emirate fits a mould. We’re all different and unique and come with our own set of experiences to the table. While it was challenging start to absorb facts from different backgrounds, before developing my own identity, I eventually realised that these differences are what gave me my own individual identity. With a sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness instilled in the other children I surrounded myself with while growing up, we quickly started learning from each other and found a comfort in the discomfort.
I’ve also bonded over nostalgic memories…

You can spot a Third Culture Kid in Dubai from a mile away. With a somewhat similar upbringing in the emirate, we instantly bond of similar elements of our childhood being, Oman chips, TGIF, street-side shawarmas or even long-standing locations such as the Clock Tower, we all instantly bond with each other, perhaps without even knowing each other’s name.
I try to comprehend situations with an open-mind
If there’s one element that stands out in the UAE, it’s respectful tolerance. To see how different cultures bond seamlessly, continues to amaze me on a daily basis. Be it our work environment or a pilates class, the exposure is not limited. With British, Australian, European and various other cultures, being under one roof, we aren’t tied to one culture and tend to appreciate different elements of different cultures from around the world. We don’t immediately rebuff an abstract concept, as we’ve been exposed to various upbringings over the years. Overall, being a third-culture kid is not always easy. You need to understand your cultures and lifestyles to be able to embrace how being different is a good thing. This however, makes you more approachable because you can understand others better.
    I always value my roots

Every trip taken to the motherland, comes with a deep appreciation. To see my roots, brings a sense of newness with each visit. For me Dubai is home and I could never replace it with any other city, including my hometown. Although, it’s only when you’re taken away from what you have that you tend to appreciate what’s back home. Every trip that I take back to my roots, to spend quality time with my grandparents or cousins, I realise their value and appreciate what it feels like to be back to where my parents are from.
Convenience is not taken for granted

In which part of the world can you press a button and have your groceries delivered in 15 minutes at any given part of the day? From my favourite gourmet burgers to a green juice, the seamless system ensures, convenience through every aspect of living here. Be it a short-haul trip or a long vacation to different parts of the world, I quickly realise the privileges and quality of life of living in this emirate. With a myriad of services offered right to our doorstep, a sense of appreciation seeps in after every trip taken abroad.
    Every day is an adventure

No one day is same here. As a community of learning and growing together, people come to this part of the world with a blank canvas to paint their own story. With new activities and discussions offered, there’s a lot left to the imagination as we’re constantly discovering what the city and its people have to offer. Being born and raised here only taught me more than I could imagine and I’m only excited to see what’s next in line as I continue to live here. As a melting pot of cultures this place has so much to offer and its city full of opportunity to both the working class and entrepreneurs.
I have a soft spot for beaches
The undeniable love for sand, picnics, azure waters and the beach is a big part of me. No matter where I am, there’s nothing like a calming walk by the beach or a few hours in the sun on a weekend. Because we are blessed with tropical views and eternal summer here, and I’m never going to let anyone take that away. While my love increases double fold during the Winters, I still enjoy a peaceful stroll during the warm season.

Dealing with post-holiday Monday blues? Mark the remaining long weekends in UAE for 2023

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

POV: You’re back from a six-day-long holiday to the office and the reality of a mundane week has just sunk in.
Last week, residents of the UAE celebrated a long weekend owing to the festivities of Eid Al-Adha. Some travelled while others stayed in, regardless, it was the perfect summer pause.
Coming back to work today also means getting back to the old routine, which after a relaxing break is slightly harder. But fret not, as you reminisce in gloom about the holidays that just passed, we’re about to replace it with excitement for the ones that are coming up.
While the majority of big breaks for 2023 are over, there are still a few prominent holidays remaining on the calendar for this year – take a look

    July 21 to July 23
The Hijri New Year falls in the month of July, opening the opportunity for another weekend. As per Ibrahim Al Jarwan, president of the Emirates Astronomy Society (ESA), the new Hijri year (Muharram 1) is supposed to be on Wednesday, July 19. Although, according to the official list of holidays unveiled by the UAE government, the same holiday will be celebrated on Friday, July 21, making it a three-day long weekend.
    September 29 to October 1
According to the official list of UAE holidays, the birthday of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) will be celebrated on September 29th this year, giving the residents another opportunity to enjoy a long relaxing weekend.
    December 1 to December 3
The first week of December marks two important days in UAE. On December 1, the nation observes Commemoration Day (previously known as Martyrs’ Day) and the following day is celebrated as UAE National Day. This will be the second last long weekend of the year.
    December 23 to December 25
A month of making merry, Christmas this year falls on a Monday. What’s better than a holiday on a Friday? A holiday on Monday. Marking the continuation of the previous weekend will give the 9-to-5 job workers another reason to rejoice.
