What to know about Shane MacGowan
Singer and songwriter Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan was born on December 25, 1957.
He was the main vocalist and composer of the Celtic punk band the Pogues.
He was born in Kent, England, to Irish parents. Along with creating his own solo music and working with musicians including Kirsty MacColl, Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, Steve Earle, Johnny Depp, Sinéad O’Connor, and Ronnie Drew, he was also a member of the Nipple Erectors and Shane MacGowan and the Popes.
    President Higgins releases statement
Irish President, Michael D. Higgins, has released a statement following the death of Shane MacGowan.
He said: “Like so many across the world, it was with the greatest sadness that I learned this morning of the death of Shane MacGowan.
“Shane will be remembered as one of music’s greatest lyricists. So many of his songs would be perfectly crafted poems, if that would not have deprived us of the opportunity to hear him sing them.
“The genius of Shane’s contribution includes the fact that his songs capture within them, as Shane would put it, the measure of our dreams – of so many worlds, and particularly those of love, of the emigrant experience and of facing the challenges of that experience with authenticity and courage, and of living and seeing the sides of life that so many turn away from.
“His words have connected Irish people all over the globe to their culture and history, encompassing so many human emotions in the most poetic of ways.
“Shane’s talent was nurtured from a young age by his mother Therese, herself an award winning folk singer in her own right. Therese, who lost her life in such tragic circumstances on New Year’s Day 2017, inspired in Shane the love of Irish music and traditions which resulted in the wonderful music and lyrics which have been a source of such joy for so many people.
“Born on Christmas Day, there was perhaps some form of destiny which led Shane to writing ‘Fairytale of New York’, the timeless quality of which will surely mean that it will be listened to every Christmas for the next century or more. Likewise songs like ‘Rainy Night in Soho’, ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’, ‘If I Should Fall from Grace with God’ and so many others will live on far into the years and decades to come.
“I think too of ‘Haunted’, and the particular poignancy that both Shane and Sinéad O’Connor have left us in such quick succession.
“It was a great honour for me, as President of Ireland, to present Shane with a lifetime achievement award in the National Concert Hall in January 2018 as we marked his 60th birthday. A richly deserved honour.
“On behalf of Sabina and I, may I extend my deepest condolences to Shane’s wife Victoria, his sister Siobhán, his father Maurice, his bandmates in the Pogues and other projects, and to all his many friends and family.”
    Beyond The Pogues
In 1992, Macgowan formed the band Shane Macgowan and The Popes.
In addition to touring abroad, the trio released two studio albums, a live CD, three tracks for The Popes Outlaw Heaven (2010), a live DVD, and a live DVD.
MacGowan had an appearance on Lou Reed’s Perfect Day in 1997, which was recorded by several musicians to benefit Children in Need.
It spent three weeks—two distinct spells—at the top of the UK single charts.
With over a million copies sold, the song helped the charity raise the most money in six years.
Shane MacGowan and The Popes had a lengthy tour of the UK, Ireland, and Europe from December 2003 to May 2005.
    Fans share tributes
Tributes have flooded in for Shane MacGowan this morning following his tragic death.

A second said: “Jesus. I knew he wasn’t well but this is still a big shock! RIP Shane MacGowan, greatest ever Irish songwriter!”
Final pic of Pogues icon Shane MacGowan following death
The last ever picture of Shane MacGowan shows the Pogues legend in good spirits.
The Fairytale of New York singer tragically passed away today after an eight-year long health battle.

    Major comeback in 2019
On June 13, 2019, MacGowan returned to the stage as a guest of Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders at Dublin’s RDS Arena.
MacGowan was scheduled to appear on July 7th with a number of guests for the Feis Liverpool 2019 finale, following the success of Feis Liverpool 2018’s finale, which featured him alongside Imelda May, Paddy Moloney, Albert Hammond Jr., and many more.
However, the event was ultimately cancelled due to a lack of ticket sales and funding issues.
According to reports, MacGowan went back into the studio in 2020 to record a few new songs with the Irish indie band Cronin, which is headed by brothers Johnny and Mick Cronin.
    More about The Pogues
In 1987 Shane co-wrote Fairytale of New York which he performed with Kirsty MacCall.
The Christmas single reached number one in the Irish charts and number two in the UK charts.

Shane on vocals, Peter “Spider” Tracy on tin whistle, and Jem Finer on banjo were the original members.
James Fearnley, the accordion player for the Nips, Andrew Ranken on drums, and Cait O’Riordan on bass completed the lineup.

    Shane’s wife pays tribute
Shane’s wife Victoria paid a touching tribute to Shane, who was “the start and end of everything that I hold dear”.
She said: “I don’t know how to say this so I am just going to say it.
“Shane who will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life and the most beautiful soul and beautiful angel and the sun and the moon and the start and end of everything that I hold dear has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother Therese.”

Shakira court updates — Singer in SHOCK deal with court over £12.7m tax evasion as she avoids jail time

POP sensation Shakira has admitted to six counts of £12.7m tax fraud as she reached a settlement with prosecutors to avoid jail time.A lengthy trial was set to begin today, but the pop star struck a last-minute deal to end proceedings.
The singer said her children played a key role in her decision to settle.
Speaking this morning she said: “While I was determined to defend my innocence in a trial that my lawyers were confident would have ruled in my favour, I have made the decision to finally resolve this matter with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal wellbeing in this fight.”
She had been summoned to a Barcelona courthouse and faced spending eight years behind bars for allegedly defrauding Spanish tax officials between 2012 and 2014.
Following the deal, the Colombian singer will now face fines, rather than jail time, Reuters reports.

Why did Shakira and Gerard Pique split?
On June 6, 2022, Shakira and Gerard Pique announced they had split up.
The revelation came after reports that the footballer had strayed.
A statement released via Shakira’s publicist read: “We regret to confirm that we are parting ways.
“For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
‘This is in the best interest of my children’ – Shakira breaks silence
In a statement, Shakira told the PA news agency: “Throughout my career, I have always strived to do what’s right and set a positive example for others.
“That often means taking the extra step in business and personal financial decisions to procure the absolute best counsel, including seeking the advice of the world’s pre-eminent tax authorities PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited and Ernst & Young Global Limited, who have been my advisers during this whole process.
“Unfortunately, and despite these efforts, tax authorities in Spain pursued a case against me as they have against many professional athletes and other high-profile individuals, draining those people’s energy, time, and tranquillity for years at a time.
“While I was determined to defend my innocence in a trial that my lawyers were confident would have ruled in my favour, I have made the decision to finally resolve this matter with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal wellbeing in this fight.
“I need to move past the stress and emotional toll of the last several years and focus on the things I love – my kids and all the opportunities to come in my career, including my upcoming world tour and my new album, both of which I am extremely excited about.
“I admire tremendously those who have fought these injustices to the end, but for me, today, winning is getting my time back for my kids and my career.”
Who else has been in the line of (Spanish) fire?
Spanish authorities have pursued other famous people over tax evasion, including the footballers Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
Both settled and paid large fines.
    What happened at Shakira’s hearing?
Shakira told the presiding magistrate, Jos Manuel del Amo, that she accepted the agreement reached with prosecutors.
She answered yes to confirm her acknowledgement of six counts of failing to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros (about $15.8 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014, reports Reuters.
Under the deal, Shakira is to receive a suspended three-year sentence and a fine of 7 million euros ($7.6 million).
Shakira has her day in court (all eight minutes of it …)
Superstar Shakira sparked a media frenzy when she arrived at court in Barcelona.
During her appearance, which lasted just eight minutes, the Colombian singer and her legal team announced they had reached a deal with prosecutors.
Wearing a pink suit, Shakira, 46, had arrived at court shortly before 10am (09.00 GMT) accompanied by her lawyers, amid a scrum of journalists and photographers.

    What is Shakira’s net worth?
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Shakira has an estimated net worth of approximately $300million, as of July 2022.
She is one of the world’s best-selling Latin American artists and one of the best-selling artists of all time with 70million album sales globally.
Her English albums Oral Fixation Vol. 2 (2005), She Wolf (2009), and Shakira (2014) were all certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum in various countries worldwide.
Fans hail ‘generational s***housery’ as Sergio Ramos gives Shakira award for Gerard Pique ‘diss track’
Football and music fans came together to hail Shakira and Sergio Ramos’ “generational s***housery” this week.
The Colombian singer, 46, wowed on the red carpet in Spain as she scooped three prizes at the Latin Grammy Awards last night.
Several of Shakira’s most recent singles appear to be swipes aimed at her ex Pique, including The Boss.
And fans couldn’t believe it when Pique’s longtime rival Ramos presented Shakira with an award for the song.

Shakira previously turned down a settlement deal
Shakira turned down a deal offered to her by prosecutors to settle her case in July 2022.
At the time, she said, via her Spanish public relations firm Llorente y Cuenca, that she believed in her innocence and chose to leave the issue in the hands of the law.
The details of this proposed deal are not available to the public.
    More on Shakira’s settlement
Under today’s deal, Shakira is to receive a suspended three-year sentence and a multi-million euro fine, reports AP.
The trial, which would have included more than 100 witnesses over the following weeks, was instead called off after just eight minutes.
Shakira blew kisses to onlookers as she arrived at court this morning, donning a pink suit.
Do Shakira and Gerard Pique have any children?
After 12 years together, Shakira and Pique share two children together, Milan and Sasha.
Following her tax fraud deal, Shakira reaffirmed her commitment to her children.
She said: “While I was determined to defend my innocence in a trial that my lawyers were confident would have ruled in my favour, I have made the decision to finally resolve this matter with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal wellbeing in this fight.
“I need to move past the stress and emotional toll of the last several years and focus on the things I love – my kids and all the opportunities to come in my career, including my upcoming world tour and my new album, both of which I am extremely excited about.”

“For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
What has Shakira been accused of 2/2
In the written document they accuse the artist, real name Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, of living in Spain “on a regular basis” during the tax years 2012 to 2014.
First at former Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique’s Barcelona bachelor flat and then at a mansion she bought with her former partner in Esplugues de Llobregat near the Catalan capital through an investment firm.
They claim her absences from Spain for work and other reasons were “sporadic” apart from a period of 61 days she spent in the States in 2012 when she was a coach on the US version of the singing competition The Voice.
    What was Shakira accused of?
Shakira had been accused of £12.7m in tax fraud by Spanish authorities.
Spanish state prosecutors announced in a pre-trial indictment they were seeking an eight-year, two-month jail term for Shakira and a fine of nearly £21 million if judges found her guilty of six counts of tax fraud she allegedly committed in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
However, the star reached a settlement agreement before the trial could begin.
Kids played key role in decision to settle
Speaking after her settlement this morning, Shakira revealed her children played a key role in her decision to not fight for her innocence.
She said: “While I was determined to defend my innocence in a trial that my lawyers were confident would have ruled in my favour, I have made the decision to finally resolve this matter with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal wellbeing in this fight.
