No one but my mum wanted me to lose weight – but I was miserable and feared I’d die a virgin at 35, says Rebel Wilson

FIRST it was Prince Harry with Spare, then Britney Spears with The Woman In Me – now Rebel Wilson is jumping on the celebrity bombshell memoir bandwagon. In it the Australian actress, who shot to fame over a decade ago as the “fat funny character” in hit comedy Bridesmaids, takes aim at the Hollywood players who “pigeon-holed” her as the overweight character.Australian actress Rebel Wilson shot to fame over a decade ago as the ‘fat funny character’ in hit comedy BridesmaidsCredit: Jeff Lipsky / The Sunday Times / News LicensingThe star has undergone a dramatic glow-up, shedding five-and-a-half stoneCredit: GettyRebel, who has since undergone a dramatic glow-up, shedding five-and-a-half stone after embarking on a “year of health”, claims she was told not to lose weight for fear her career would nosedive. She also reveals how childhood physical abuse at the hands of her father led her to become a secret binge eater and left her feeling so “unlovable” she refused to date anyone, fearing she would die a virgin before she had sex for the first time aged 35.In a no-holds-barred interview ahead of the release of her book, Rebel Rising, out later this month, the actress said: “Basically no one apart from my mum wanted me to lose weight.“People thought I’d lose my pigeonhole in my career, playing the fat funny character, and they wanted me to continue in that.”READ MORE CELEB NEWSHer candour shows she is fast becoming the ultimate Hollywood rebel, with Brit star Sacha Baron Cohen already reportedly threatening legal action over claims in her book that she was disrespected on the set of their 2016 film Grimsby — allegations he strongly denies.‘Decision to look ugly’Yet the actress has never been a stereotypical star, having openly admitted she carved out her Hollywood career by looking “ugly”.Rebel, who grew up the eldest of four children in Balmain, a working-class suburb of Sydney, says: “When I was younger I deliberately made myself less attractive . . . I wanted to make something of myself, have a great career and make a lot of money.“I knew I wouldn’t be taken seriously like a Cate Blanchett or Nicole Kidman, but I quickly realised that the bigger you were, the more audiences laughed. Most read in Celebrity“So I’d have my gut hanging out and wear micro-shorts on stage, no make-up, stuff that horrified my mother.Rebel Wilson reveals she gained 30 pounds back and feels ‘bad’ about herself after major slimdown“It was a really conscious decision to look ugly.”Her unusual name came from her mum Sue Bownds, a breeder who showed dogs, but she claims her dad Victor Wilson, who owned a pet supplies company, never agreed with it, insisting on calling her Melanie instead.Rebel writes in her memoir: “Mum didn’t stand up to Dad that day, nor for almost 17 subsequent years.”It was her relationship with her dad that fostered her unhealthy relationship with food, she says. She recalls how he once hit her three times across the face as a child. On a separate occasion, after begging him for a slurpee — a frozen drink — she says he threatened: “I’m going to choke you and kill you if you say one more thing, Melanie.”In a candid interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, she admits: “In those moments when I was worried or scared, I turned to food.”In 2003 she had her first cameo roles, in the Australian comedy film Fat Pizza and the TV series of the same name. She played Toula, the overweight girlfriend of Habib, a pizza delivery driver and drug dealer. In her book she accuses the show of making her the target of jokes about her size and appearance, but while she “willingly” played the “big fat whale that got laughs”, she was determined to give her character more depth.“I was in a boys’ show, so I had to take their fatphobic jokes right on my double chin,” she writes.“All people cared about was that I was fat and funny. And I was doing both of those things very well.”Fat Pizza creator Paul Fenech has hit back. In an interview over the weekend he said: “Rebel was happy building a career playing the big girl in Hollywood, now she’s saying we did her wrong?“We gave her a start, took her around the world, gave her stage training and TV and feature film opportunities. How ungrateful.”Fuelled by self belief and a determination to “make it”, Rebel moved to Hollywood and landed her break in comedy movie Bridesmaids, stealing the show as Brynn, the oddball sister of Matt Lucas’s character.Wilson reveals how childhood physical abuse at the hands of her father led her to become a secret binge eaterCredit: InstagramThe pair became firm friends, with Rebel moving to the British comedian’s West Hollywood home, where she lived for two-and-a-half years.Matt previously said: “We’re not very rock ’n’ roll. Our drug is Weight Watchers’ ice cream in tubs.” At a dinner at Matt’s home she was introduced to Borat star Baron Cohen, who later cast her as his character Nobby’s plus-size wife Dawn in Grimsby.Rebel says: “It turned out to be the worst professional experience of my career.” She claims she felt “disrespected on set” but chose not to speak out over fears she would be branded “a troublemaker”.“It’s one thing for someone who is fat to exploit their size for comedy, but it’s another for somebody else to humiliate you,” she says.Rebel claims her costumes were chosen so you could “see all the cellulite on my thighs”, and that she was asked to “stick her finger up [Sacha’s] butt” during a sex scene, which she says she refused to do.Several never-before-seen clips from the movie have since been leaked, showing the pair trying out the scene, with her appearing to be on board with it.But Rebel insists the video has been “edited” and shared out of context. She said in a statement: “It is an asshole move to release footage of one part of that disgusting episode while leaving out everything that preceded it including my horrified refusal to stick my finger up SBC’s butt . . . Releasing unauthorised and misleading behind-the-scenes video without my approval is SBC’s latest way of bullying and gaslighting me.”Grimsby was a rare flop for Rebel. In 2019 she teamed up with Anne Hathaway in The Hustle, and the same year she played the leading lady in the comedy musical Isn’t It Romantic. In the Pitch Perfect trilogy, which ran from 2012 to 2017, Rebel played Patricia “Fat Amy” Hobart.Last year she claimed there was a clause in her contract preventing her from slimming, saying: “I couldn’t lose a massive amount of weight because it was in the contracts for that movie.“You can’t lose — I think it’s not more than ten pounds or gain more than ten pounds.”Rebel added: “I was stereotyped in playing that fat, funny friend, which is so hard because I love those roles.‘A lot of pushback’“But then I did want to do more things, but I felt like being the bigger girl, you’re just more pigeonholed.”A UK size 20-22, she had become the poster girl for the body positive movement, “applauded” for being plus size. But behind closed doors she struggled with binge eating, admitting: “I was just sitting in my apartment, watching TV and eating pints of ice cream.”In 2019, having started the process to freeze her eggs, a fertility doctor told her she stood a better chance at IVF if she lost weight. She had been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can affect your ability to conceive. But she claims her management team was resistant to her losing weight. In the Pitch Perfect trilogy, which ran from 2012 to 2017, Rebel played Patricia ‘Fat Amy’ HobartCredit: ReutersShe told BBC Breakfast in 2021: “I got a lot of pushback from my own team actually, here in Hollywood, when I said, ‘OK, I’m going to do this year of health, I feel like I’m really going to physically transform and change my life’.“And they were like, ‘Why? Why would you want to do that?’ Because I was earning millions of dollars being the funny fat girl.”Rebel worked with a doctor to help her to overcome her emotional eating and the weight “just kinda dropped off”.After her dad died aged 62 from a heart attack in 2013, Rebel says it “opened her heart up to love”.Rebel bought self-help books including Get The Guy, by Matthew Hussey, before a co-star from Pitch Perfect set her up on a date with a man called Mickey in 2015, with whom she lost her virginity. But it was an on-screen kiss with actress Charlotte Gainsbourg in the 2022 indie film The Almond And The Seahorse that proved life-changing.It set her on a path of discovery that her sexuality was “fluid” and that being with a woman “wasn’t a big deal”.In 2021 she was set up by a friend with her now fiancée, fashion designer Ramona Agruma, 40.The actress decided to go public with their relationship, her first with a woman, in 2022 after a journalist from the Sydney Morning Herald contacted her publicist saying they were planning to run a story “outing” her.She opted to gazump the story, posting a picture of them on Instagram with the caption: “I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince . . . but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess.”Rebel says: “I don’t really hold grudges. But I just thought that outing of celebrities was not a thing any more. You shouldn’t have to come out anyway — you just are whatever you are.”READ MORE SUN STORIESThe couple got engaged last February and have a 16-month-old daughter, Royce, born by surrogate. Steve Wright ‘had secret heart surgery’ and was ‘more ill than he’d been letting on’ before death

STEVE Wright had “secret heart surgery” shortly after his BBC show was axed and was “more ill than he’d been letting on, a friend has claimed.The 69-year-old radio icon died suddenly on Monday, leaving fans and loved ones heartbroken.

Wright’s close friend Mark Wells revealed the information in the Behind The Scenes with Colin Edmonds podcast.
In the wide-ranging tribute, Wells opened up on Steve’s health battles, including his heart bypass surgery.
Wells said: “He had a bypass operation which had gone well but I think he had been more ill than he had been letting on to that point.
“The recovery from that had gone pretty well.

“Obviously the events of the last couple of days would suggest that’s what in the end came for him.”
TV executive Wells had been pals with the legendary DJ since the Nineties.
He added: “He never ate properly. Every meal I had with him was an unhealthy one. He didn’t drink much but he certainly used to smoke cigars.
“And we would often walk around the block smoking cigars back in the day. I think in time that took its toll.

“Steve told me he had a heart operation about 14 or 15 months ago.”
In September 2022 bosses handed the afternoon slot to Scott Mills, leaving Steve with just his Sunday Love Songs programme.
Radio 2 listeners in tears as Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs returns to the air just days after legend’s sudden death
He personally thanked Wells, who was former head of programming at ITV, during his final broadcast.
Wells also alleged station bosses begged Wright to return to his afternoon slot full-time, however, the BBC has denied this is the case.
Wells revealed: “This is absolutely the truth, and the BBC will deny this.
“But this is what Steve said to me last Friday (9/2 in this instance)
“He said you’ll never guess what happened this week. He said ‘I got a call from Radio 2, and they very quietly asked me how I would feel about going back to do afternoons.’
“I said ‘Oh my God, what do you think of that?’
“Well, he thought he was funny as well. And he said, ‘I don’t know whether you should ever go back in life though, do you?’
“And then we talked about something else and moved on.”
From bullied schoolboy to BBC legendBy Jane Matthews
STEVE Wright went from being a bullied schoolboy cruelly dubbed ‘Big Nose’ to a BBC radio legend.
Wright was born in Greenwich, London and attended Eastwood High School in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.
It was there that he was cruelly nicknamed Big Nose and Concorde.
His first job after leaving school was in marine insurance but after three years he realised it wasn’t for him.
It was then that Wright left to become a local newspaper reporter.
This led him to BBC, as a record librarian, which then went on to his own shows – and the rest was history.
But in 2022 he announced he was stepping back from his Afternoon show after more than two decades.
He said at the time: “Before we start the show proper, if I may, I’d just like to say thank you ever so much for all the messages that have come in, over the weekend after I announced on Friday on the afternoon that we are leaving the afternoon show.”
The axing saw him take another step towards his Sunday Love Songs show – which he last appeared on just days ago.

However, a spokesman for the BBC explained that further shows on Radio 2 were never proposed.
They told us: “This isn’t right. We spoke to Steve alongside other presenters about our plans for the new Radio 2 DAB+ extension, which we announced last week, including simulcasting his Sunday Love Songs on the station and agreed to discuss further content ideas in due course. There was no mention of afternoons or Radio 2.”
Discussing the impact of his cull, Wells said: “Steve was extremely surprised that it happened.
“It came as a bolt from the blue and that’s why he couldn’t understand it.
“He felt that the show was still extremely popular and there was no drop in the number of listeners he was reaching.
“He felt creatively and editorially, and from a production point of view, the show was still hot.”
He added: “I think Steve was just shocked in the way it was handled, which I think was brutal, but he was determined publicly to appear very stoical about it, which is why he said what he said at the time, ‘Sometimes they want you, sometimes they don’t’.
“Steve loved and hated the BBC and equal measure is the truth of it.
“He loved the organisation and what it stood for.
“He hated the bureaucracy and nonsense he had to put up with – the interfering.”
    SON’S HEARTBREAK
Steve’s son Tom told The Sun on Sunday he flew from Los Angeles to London to care for his dad, due to receive an MBE awarded in the New Year’s Honours list.
The ex-club promoter said he got to know his father “in a way he never had” during the DJ’s final months.
In an emotional post on Instagram, Tom added: “God rest your soul Dad, and thank you for all your for all the kind words from all the lives that he touched and people that loved him.
“It’s gonna be an intense few days, so catching up and hearing from old friends and new would mean more than anything else right now too…
“Rough as it may be, I thank the Gods I’m sober, as this would have straight up killed me even a couple of years ago after losing Mum over the pandemic in the same way without getting to see him before he passed after flying back to take care of the old blighter.
“Still, I will cherish every memory we made, and it’s not like I don’t have a few shows to be working through whenever I miss his voice, though tears me up too much now to consider…

“My Son officially has a broken heart. LIFE IS SO SHORT. PLEASE LOVE YOUR PEOPLE.”
He started dating the reality star in 2000, sparking almost a decade-long relationship between the two.
In 2007, they had a son King Javien Conde, when Mena was 19 at the time.
In 2010, things took a dark turn after Mena was caught on video attacking Conde.

Mena would later claim that Conde had been physically abusive to her during the relationship, at a 2013 rally to raise awareness for domestic abuse.
The following year, the two would resolve their differences, with Mena posing with a sweet family photo at a Miami Heat game, with the caption, “The war is over.”
The rapper was based in Miami at the time of his death and was an ordained minister.
He is best known for his time in the Terror Squad, including his hand in directing the major hit, Lean Back.

Outside of his musical pursuits, he also played a major part in the tequila brand that was pushed by Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Scott Disick.
Conde, 52, died on Tuesday, after suffering from a heart attack.
    ‘MY DAY 1′
Fat Joe, who was part of the Terror Squad with the rapper, also shared his love for the star, as well as condolences after hearing the news.
“My Day 1 how can a man love another man more than your own biological family. You are 1 of 1 the most loyal EVER. We did it since kids we did everything we dreamed of i love you with every fiber in my body,” Joe wrote.
The Lean Back rapper posted multiple pictures of him and his longtime friend.
“I thought we’d get old together and look back at the times we had and laugh. No one understood me like you, you were God sent my brother I wish I could get one last talk with you.”
“My Condolences to the CONDE FAMILY ty for letting us have RAUL for all these years I can tell you not a moment in my life I won’t love and cherish every minute every second I’ve had with RAUL,” the rapper added.
Conde joined the rap group in 1998, sparking the two rappers’ long friendship.
In 1998, the All The Way Up rapper credited Conde with saving his life after the Terror Squad had been approached by a local man after their concert in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
“When I go to walk [out], I open the door, this dude is standing in the trunk of a car — this is no exaggeration — pulling out the silver gun, All of a sudden, I see Raul TS. Now, Raul got a .22 Derringer, probably the same s**t he had at Morris High School,” Joe said during an Instagram Live session.
The pair’s friend Joey Crack, who was also there during the scary encounter, chimed in.
“So he tells me to stand behind him and all eight of us are in line with Raul’s .22. We wound up car-jacking two dudes, grabbed them out, boom, jumped in the whip … We get the f**k outta there,” Crack said.
DJ Khaled, who was also close with Conde, posted a kind message to his friend.
“Love you my brother @raul.ts you are very rare you the definition of a true brother friend . U always wanted to see everyone win. RAUL I LOVE YOU, BROTHER! GOD BLESS. WE GOING MISS U, @raul.ts the legendary RAUL! Love forever!,” the social media star wrote on Instagram.

5 Heart Disease Risk Factors Every Woman Needs To Know About

September is Heart Awareness Month. Heart disease and strokes are the second highest cause of death in South Africa (only HIV can beat this killer!), so this is definitely something we can’t brush off. A healthy heart literally is a matter of life and death. While we’re all aware that to have a healthy heart, we need to eat well, exercise and avoid a few things, things can get a bit more complicated than that. Here, the heart disease risk factors you need to be aware of and what you should be doing to prevent it…

Meet The Expert: Dr Annarie van Rensburg is a Specialist Cardiologist at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital in Sunningdale, Blouberg

Heart health remains a priority for healthcare providers and an epidemic in South Africa. According to the SA Heart and Stroke Foundation, 30% of the population has some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD). And while we often think of heart disease as something that affects only the elderly, that’s no longer the case. Per the SA Heart and Stroke Foundation, more than half of deaths among people under the age of 65 are attributed to heart disease. A third of people are hypertensive, too.

“The heart disease risk factors for women are similar to those of men,” Van Rensburg begins. But when it comes to prevention, she can’t underline enough the importance of looking after your body and your health. Here’s what you need to know…

    Risk Factor 1: Smoking

Smoking is a BIG risk factor when it comes to heart health. We already know this, but here’s a reminder that you are jeopardising your own life every time you light up. “Women who smoke 20 cigarettes a day have six times increased risk of having a heart attack, while with men the risk is three times higher.” So it’s even riskier for us girls. Our advice: quit now, while you’re ahead.

The why: every time you light up, the chemicals inside cigarettes clog the blood and arteries inside your heart. Think vaping is A-OK? Think again. A 2020 review found that vaping stiffens the arteries and creates higher blood pressure, which puts undue stress on the heart. Toss that vape.

    Risk Factor 2: Diabetes

If you suffer from diabetes, there’s a chance that your heart may be at risk. If it’s your lifestyle choices that have led to diabetes, such as a sedentary lifestyle, then here’s the wake-up call: it’s time to get active! “Having diabetes is also associated with a greater risk of developing heart disease in women than in men,” says Van Rensburg.

The why? Per the Centers for Disease Control, “high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart.” Scary stuff.

    Risk Factor 3: High Cholesterol

High cholesterol can be genetic, but it’s typically associated with obesity. Again, a sedentary lifestyle can be your biggest enemy. A healthy diet and keeping active are not only necessary for you to look your best, they’re also the doctor’s recommended remedy for preventing heart disease.

The why? When there’s too much cholesterol in the blood, they form plaque deposits on the artery walls of your heart. This could cause an artery to become blocked or the plaque could even rupture.

    Risk Factor 4: Hypertension

High blood pressure is known as a silent killer because there are often no symptoms. Regular blood pressure check-ups are advisable and, again, a healthy diet is key. Read: fresh fruit and veg, and cut back on processed food high in salt, sugar and oil.

The why? Having hypertension causes your heart to work harder to fulfil its tasks, pumping blood throughout your body to keep you going. And leaving your high blood pressure unchecked means you’re creating a situation where your heart could cop out, leading to heart disease.

    Risk Factor 5: Advancing Age

“The risk of developing heart disease increases dramatically once a woman is post-menopausal,” says Rensburg. “If there is a family history of premature coronary artery disease in family members below the age of 55 (men) or (65) women, or a family history of high cholesterol, the risk is also significantly increased.”

The why? Over time, our hearts become stiffer with age, leading to high blood pressure, which puts stress on the heart.

While we can’t reverse the ageing process, we can take steps to age healthily, which includes every doctor’s order: eating well and exercising regularly.

What Should All Women Do To Lower The Risk Of Heart Disease?

“Lead a healthy lifestyle,” Van Rensburg stresses again. This includes getting in a sweat session at least five times a week. “Maintain a healthy body weight,” she continues, “a BMI between 19 and 25.” Smoking is a big no-no. Just don’t do it – it’s not worth risking your heart. “Have your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar checked regularly,” Van Rensburg concludes. The intervals at which this should be checked increase as you age, but it is necessary for everyone. “Everyone should have it checked, then discuss with their doctor what the recommended treatment is or when the next visit should be scheduled.” More
