Zendaya takes over Coachella as a surprise performer

    Life

    by Ruman Baig

Zendaya is not a jack of all trades, she is pretty much a master of everything she does. Case in point: The Euphoria star joined artist Labrinth on stage as they performed popoular tracks from the show at the Coachella music festival.
The Emmy-winning actor, who is also a singer, hasn’t performed live for almost six years. This was until she broke the internet over the weekend, by singing not just one but two tracks (All For Us andI’m Tired) from the crowd-favourite HBO show.

“Thank you all for welcoming me back on that stage with open arms. It’s been a very long time, so I appreciate it. I have never heard screaming like that in my entire life. As soon as I turned the corner, I couldn’t hear anything.” The Dune star acknowledged her fans and their heartfelt response to her performance in a series of Instagram stories. She also thanked Labrinth for making this iconic moment happen in the eleventh hour. “Thank you to Lab for inviting me and making all this happen so last minute.”
Fun fact: Zendaya isn’t just the soul of Euphoria as Rue, but she also plays a poignant part in making the music for this infamous series. Apart from originally singing All For Us, she has also co-written Still Don’t Know My Name, alongside Labrinth and Muzhda Zemar-McKenzie.
Taking a 360° pivot from her style on the show, Zendaya wore a flirty pink mini dress on a white tank top and clubbed it with a pair of thigh-high boots.

    Millie Bobby Brown is engaged!

    Lifestyle

    by Ruman Baig

The Stranger Things actor announced this happy new via Instagram. Of course, with Taylor Swift lyrics in the caption. Millie is all set to tie the knot with her long-time beau Jake Bongiovi, who she has been dating for almost two and a half years.
The lines in her caption from the song ‘Lover‘ also confirmed the timeline of her relationship. “I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want ’em all,”
The 19-years-old actor has been very public about her romance with legendary singer Jon Bon Jovi’s son. Engagement speculations first sparked when Millie posted a picture of the back of her head in a car — showing only part of her hand, enough for fans to spot a rock on her finger.

Jake also made this new public on his social media, but in a more subtle way. With his arms around Millie and their backs facing the camera, the 20-years-old actor-producer captioned his adroable post with ‘forever’.

While the details of the nuptials are yet to come, Millie did share her shimmering, oval-shaped  diamond ring with her excited fans. Like a true Gen-Z couple, they met on Instagram, became friends and the rest as they say is history.
Here’s wishing the happy couple congratulations!

How Lexie is making waves in the music industry with her soulful tracks

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

When it comes to the music industry, there’s always up-and-coming talent and Lexie is most certainly one of them.
With influences ranging from Dua Lipa to Karen Carpenter, Lexie’s passion is her original music, and her recently released track “You Don’t Fit Me’ made it to Spotify’s ‘New Music Friday’ in its very first week.
By making her name in the Middle East, she is all set to perform today at the award-winning speakeasy Hudson Tavern at Hyde Hotel, for an evening of music to flow through your soul with exceptional rhythms and beats from 8pm until late.
To understand more about her career, Emirates Woman speaks to see how she overcame the challenges imposed in the industry.
    Talk us through your career.
I’ve been in music for over 13 years, but I feel like I’m at the beginning of my journey. It’s like everything I’ve done until now has been a series of lessons preparing me for what’s about to come! I’ve tried so many different musical genres, I’ve signed noteworthy deals, and I’ve signed bad ones that cost me a fortune in litigation. But I can honestly say that I’m now so comfortable and sure of myself as an artist, I write music I love, and I’m proud of, and the only voice of reason I listen to now is my own. I know myself best.

What inspired you to enter the music industry?
To be honest, it was a bit of an accident, I was training to go into musical theatre, and then I ended up getting into a Girl Band signed with Warner, and that’s how I started out in the recording industry. You’d laugh if you saw me back then, we did quirky electro-pop, and we were young in the industry and just did what we were told.
Could you tell us more about your upcoming release ‘Made Me Love You’, on what was the creative process behind this song?
Honestly, There were a lot of tears, I probably kept Kleenex in business that month. Writing ‘Made Me Love You’ was the epitome of free therapy, I was so crushed after finding out the ‘guy I was seeing’ was in fact… ‘Married’, and when I found out I was still attached to him. Anyway I knew I had to swiftly let go of the whole situation, and writing this song was a huge part of my healing process, I’m so grateful that I can express myself with my songs it feels like the pain leaves my body and turns into art. I was crashing at my friends apartment at the time, because I had no work due to COVID, and he had this beautiful white grand piano next to a large window, I would just sit for hours, trying to find the words to explain how I felt, the song came together gradually, I would add a few lines each day, until I felt my story had been told.
You’ve teamed up with Hudson Tavern at Hyde Hotel for an evening of music and performances. How does it feel and what can the audience expect?
I love to get people to sing along with me! The Hudson Tavern has such an intimate feel, it’s perfect because I care a lot about the story and the lyrical content of my songs, playing a venue like this really gives people the chance to take it in and connect with me.
You’re a pop singer-songwriter. Tell us more about this music genre.
Well I’d say it’s pop, with a pinch of soul, and a touch of country. I write most of my pieces alone on guitar, and then I build the productions around that. I like my songs to have real instrumentation, and raw vocals, mixed with more modern sounds.
How do you empower the women you’re surrounded with?
I am Happy! That’s the key, it allows me to share my resources, my positivity and my blind faith that everything will work out, with other women around me. I’m very good at recognising people’s potential, and I’m definitely that friend that will really push to get it out of you. I actually have my own entertainment agency, and I hire and work with a lot of amazingly talented women, every day.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
Your number one goal in life should be happiness. When you prioritise it, it forces you to keep the right people around, to engage in activities that genuinely bring you joy, and to have healthy relationships. It teaches you to be grateful for what you do have, and it reminds you there’s no point in having huge career dreams if you don’t enjoy the journey to the top. If your hating life everyday you may as well move to Bali! Embrace that what makes you happy throughout life does change, some times it means letting go of things that are comfortable, and making space for something new.

Dubai-based singer Lisa Scott-Lee on her journey to success

    Lifestyle

    by Sarah Joseph

The British dance-pop group, Steps were formed in May 1997 and Lisa Scott-Lee was a key member of the band.
Seeing many ups and downs together, the five-member band experienced an unexpected split in 2001, which led each member to pursue their solo careers later on.
When the pop group reunited after 10 years for a concert they were seen rise up in five separate glass tubes to portray them being awoken after the split, showcasing that their bond in truly unbreakable.
A few years after the band came back together, Scott-Lee moved to Dubai in 2014 along with her husband and launched the Dubai Performing Arts Academy while balancing parenthood.
“We decided to give something back to the community, and pass on our wealth of performing experience to budding young performers in the region,” she tells Emirates Woman when asked about her reason for launching the academy.
Despite years of being in the industry, the band was asked to reunite on stage once again for a prestigious event in the UK and the release of their latest album, ‘The Platinum Collection’.
To celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary they came together on one of the most important occasions in history for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert “in front of an audience of 10K,” she mentioned.
For this significant event, the Welsh singer said, “It was wonderful to be a part of the celebrations and see the country come together.”
As she continues to make a mark in the region and grow her loyal fanbase year after year, Emirates Woman speaks to her about her career and how Dubai has played a vital role in making her dream come true.
You’ve had an incredible career to date across many facets. Can you walk us through these and how they connect to each other?
I feel blessed that Steps are celebrating 25 years in the music industry. We are thrilled to have recently received two prestigious awards, an ‘Icon’ award and a Lifetime Achievement award, and we were honoured to perform for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert in the UK. The celebrations continue this summer and a UK Tour and the release of our Greatest Hits album, the ‘Platinum Collection.’ Here in Dubai, we are proud to be the first school to launch BTEC in Performing Arts Diplomas in the Middle East, in affiliation with Pearson and Taaleem. We are thrilled to have received outstanding results for our first BTEC in Performing Arts graduates, our students have all received a 100 per cent distinction and it is proving to be a wonderful and successful year.

What inspired you to launch the Dubai Performing Arts Academy in 2014?
With me being in the International pop group Steps, and my husband, Johnny being from London’s West End, we decided to give something back to the community, and pass on our wealth of performing experience to budding young performers in the region, and hence, DPA was born.
What have been the biggest challenges to date and how did you overcome them?
I think the biggest challenge is trying to balance my work in two countries, along with motherhood. I am lucky to have a wonderfully supportive husband and our beautiful children Jaden and Star-Lily. We are fortunate that our children are following in our performing footsteps, and love coming to DPA, which means we can spend a lot of time together. Our son Jaden is currently playing Billy Elliot in the UK musical, which is dream come true for him, after having trained with us at DPA from an early age. We are also lucky to have found a lovely network of friends, who have become our ‘Dubai Family’, and enable us to enjoy so many incredible experiences both in the UK and here.
What brought you to Dubai and how has your journey evolved to date?
We originally moved to Dubai as we wanted to buy property on The Palm, I was blown away by the engineering and unique design, and The Palm continues to dazzle me until today. We moved to Dubai in 2011 with two babies, two suitcases, and a two-year plan. We fell in love with Dubai and decided to raise our children in this beautiful, cosmopolitan safe city, which it is very much my home years on. After having been awarded the prestigious Golden Visa in 2021 for our services to Performing Arts, we are here to stay.

We love the fact that new careers can emerge or reemerge at any age. Do you feel people are having more than one career in their lives these days?
I think a lot of it comes down to pure hard work and determination. I also think Dubai and the UAE is the land of opportunity, and the rulers and government are very supportive of new setups, which helps incredibly.
How has the industry changed since you started out and how has the evolvement been throughout?
The industry has changed massively over my 25-year career span. When Steps launched in 1997, neither the internet nor social media had been invented and so this has brought the biggest change for artists, in terms of streaming and having instant feedback from fans. As we know, there are pros and cons to Social media, but for music artists, it’s a great tool for sharing music and news from around the world.
You’ve just played at the Queen’s Jubilee in the UK. How did this honour come to fruition?
Steps were honoured to be asked to close the Queen’s Jubilee Concert filmed in Manchester Arena, in front of an audience of 10K, in the mark of her 70 years of service. London and the UK were decorated with flags and bunting, and it was wonderful to be a part of the celebrations and see the country come together.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
Listen to your elders. I think with time, you realise how important it is to listen to the advice of those who have experienced life before you, and also to treasure this and loved ones.
