Fritz Wepper dead – Cabaret star who appeared alongside Liza Minnelli in Oscar-winning movie dies aged 82

CABARET actor Fritz Wepper has died at the age of 82.

The German star was best known for appearing alongside Liza Minnelli in the 1972 Oscar-winning movie.

Wepper also starred as Inspector Harry Klein in more than 280 episodes of the cult long-running German crime series Derrick, between 1974 and 1998.

His death was announced by his wife, Susanne Kellermann, in a statement to German newspaper Bild.

She revealed Wepper died on Monday morning in a Munich hospice, where he had been treated for around a month before succumbing to a long illness.

In the five weeks leading up to his death, Wepper had been receiving palliative care.

Wepper was born in Munich in 1995 and began his acting career at the age of 11 in a production of Peter Pan.

His breakthrough role was as a young soldier in Bernhard Wicki’s anti-war film Die Brücke (1959), which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The actor also starred in The Bridge (1959), before playing the role of Fritz Wendel in the Oscar-winning film version of Cabaret.

Wepper was married twice and had two daughters – one with each wife.

His first wife was Angela von Morgen, who he married in 1979 and appeared alongside in the crime series Mord in bester Gesellschaft between 2007 and 2017.

In 2009, however, he left Von Morgen for his current wife, Susanne, before later returning to his first wife.

After Von Morgen died in 2019, Wepper married Kellermann a year later.

His eldest, Sophie, 42, is also an actress and played alongside her father in Mord in bester Gesellschaft.
