Waad Al-Kateab has made history for her documentary that received a staggering four BAFTA nods, making it the most nominated feature documentary in history.
Despite the difficult ordeal that it portrays, the film feels like a heartfelt story Al-Kateab wanted to share with her daughter Sama, and now it is in the running for Film Not in English Language, Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut, and Best Documentary awards.
Syrian filmmaker tells her harrowing story as she navigates the war in Aleppo. She started documenting her experience on the phone, covering everything from moments of joy, to suffering. The documentary, directed by her and Edward Watts, covers a five-year period, all the way from her wedding, the birth of her daughter Sama to when she had to make a decision whether to flee Aleppo for her family’s safety.
“We hope For Sama gives audiences some sense of the brutal repression and humanitarian crisis in Syria which continues to this day,” she told Arab News.
After escaping Aleppo, Al-Kateab arrived in the UK as a refugee where she now lives.
