Gyms, cinemas, leisure centres and more permitted to reopen in Dubai

Life in Dubai is slowly but surely returning to normal after directives were put in place for gyms, cinemas, leisure centres and more to reopen on Wednesday, May 27 2020.

During a meeting with Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management committee chaired by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, the plans for a gradual reopening of businesses between 6am and 11pm each day were unveiled. These were per the directives from HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

This includes cinemas, gyms, training and educational centres, entertainment centres like Dubai Ice Rink and more. However, strict social distancing and other precautionary measures are in place for public health and safety reasons amidst the COVID-19 outbreak.

Following the announcement, the Dubai Media Office outlined general key rules that must be followed by businesses in order to reopen:

  • Activities authorised to operate must abide by the timings of the national sterilisation programme.
  • Social distance of two metres must be maintained by all.
  • All those returning from abroad must adhere to a 14-day quarantine.
  • Masks are obligatory and must be worn at all times.
  • Sterilisation must continuously be carried out and only single-use utensils allowed.
  • violators of rules and guidelines will be fined, according to the type of violation.
  • Children under 12, elderly over 60 and those with chronic diseases and prone to infection, are not allowed to enter malls, cinemas, sports facilities and educational institutes.

This announcement came after it was confirmed restrictions in Dubai are set to be reduced from Wednesday May 27, 2020 – the curfew hours will change from 11pm to 6am, meaning people must stay home during these hours.

“We urge all concerned entities in Dubai to intensify awareness efforts and ensure that everyone, at organisational and individual levels, adheres to the precautionary measures and guidelines to protect the well-being of our society,” Sheikh Hamdan said.
