From Scarlett Johansson’s standalone to Disney’s live-action , it is set to be an action packed year women in cinema. So, here is your guide to 2020’s must-see women lead movies.

Banat Sanawy

This up-coming Egyptian film follows five teenage girls as they try to discover themselves, while getting into many troubles and difficulties during high school.

Like a Boss

The perfect comedy flick for a girls night out. Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne play two friends with very different ideals, who start a beauty company together. One is more practical while the other wants to earn her fortune and live a lavish lifestyle.

The Grudge

This is set to be the 12th instalment in the series, and according to producers will be more of a departure from the originals. This film, starring John Cho and star Betty Gilpin shows a house which is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death.

Promising Young Woman

This upcoming drama thriller follows Cassie played by Carey Mulligan, who everyone thought was a promising young woman, until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past.

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Next year, we are set to get a superhero movie like no other – an all female team up. This movie led by Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, follows the anti-hero’s antics after splitting with the Joker. She joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

Mulan

Disney has been remaking its iconic animated movies into live action and Mulan is the latest to get the big-screen treatment. However, unlike other live-action adaptations, this version is not a shot-for-shot remake. The film will not be a musical, cutting the songs and comedic relief Mushu the dragon to return to the traditional Chinese legend of Hua Mulan.

A Quite Place 2

Emily Blunt is set to star in the sequel to her husband’s smash-hit horror movie. Spoiler alert – John Krasinski’s character dies in the first film, so what we know about the plot is that his wife Evelyn is hell-bent on avenging his death.

Black Widow

Even though we bid goodbye to Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in last year, we are still going to see the actress in character soon. For her first stand-alone movie, Scarlett is staring in a prequel to the existing Avengers movies. The movie will focus on Black Widow’s life as Natasha, a Russian sleeper agent in the US, before she switched sides and joined the good guys. Directed by a female director and with an impeccable supporting cast including Rachel Weisz and Florence Pugh, this female superhero movie is worth celebrating.

Legally Blonde 3

As if this list wasn’t exciting enough, Reese Witherspoon is set to reprise her groundbreaking role as Elle Woods for 2020. While all details are kept under wraps, all we know is that everyone’s favourite pink-loving lawyer-turned-politician is back and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for us!

Barbie

Who would have thought that we would be getting a live-action Barbie movie in 2020! Margot Robbie will be taking on the title role as the doll expelled from ‘Barbieland’ for not being perfect enough and who decides to explore the ‘real world’. Not only that, but award-winning director Greta Gerwig will be directing this flick, with her husband Noah Baumbach penning the script.

Wonder Woman 1984

After three years, the record breaking Wonder Woman is returning with a highly-anticipated sequel. Barely anything is known about the plot other than the fact that it is set in 1984. But who needs more information than that?

Can’t wait to watch them all!
